Gaudete Sunday

Gaudete is Latin for “rejoice.” So why do we need a
reminder to rejoice on the third Sunday of Advent?
Why do we light a pink candle and have the priest
wear rosecolored vestments at Mass?
Because we need to be reminded that the happiness
that comes from fun and friends and a full belly is
not the same as Christian joy. In talking about the
difference between happiness and joy, Pope Francis
said, “To be happy is good, yet joy is something
more. It’s another thing; something that does not
depend on external motivations or on passing issues.
It is a gift.” If joy is a gift from the Lord, then the Lord
himself is our -irst and greatest gift, and the only one
that will never tarnish or fade. Gaudete Sunday
reminds us that the gift has not yet arrived,
but it’s very near.
(FromCatholicVote.org)
From the loneliness of his prison cell John the Baptist asks
of Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we
look for another?” The weeks before Christmas offer
much to be joyous about, celebrating with family and
friends, the glitter of seasonal decorations, the excitement
of gift giving and receiving. But in our midst there are the
lonely and neglected, the poor, the hospitalized, the
wayward, the shut-ins. There are those who feel that they
have no hope. To whom should they look? Discipleship in
the Lord includes being good stewards of others. Are
there those in our family, our neighborhood, our
community to whom we can reach out to show them a
sign of Christ’s presence in their midst?

Help your children celebrate the
reason for the season and focus on
preparing for the birth of Jesus!
Encourage your children to do good
deeds, write them down on a piece of
paper, and place the good deed papers
in the manger when they attend Mass.
Help make a soft place for baby Jesus
to lay his head. Our Good Deed
Manger may be found by the tree near
the baptismal font.
ACTS Missions SJA/AOL will be conducting a silent
auction for 2 individual hand-made crafts on December 14th
and 15th after all masses. One of the items is a beautifully
framed needlepoint of our Lord's face during His Passion. It
was generously donated by parishioner Arlene Entremont.
The second item is a beautiful carving of our Lord carrying
His cross, generously donated by parishioner Jim
Schexnayder. The ACTS Mission leaders would like to
thank these two parishioners for their support in raising
money for ACTS in St Joan of Arc Parish.

Men’s Road to Emmaus Retreat
January 2426, 2020
Open to All Men from All Areas
This retreat is held at Rosaryville Spirit Life Center and
retreat house in beautiful, peaceful Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
The retreat is based on the scripture passage, “As two disciples
talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came
up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing
him. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave
thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were
opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their
sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within
us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to
us?”(Luke 24:15-16, 30-32) It is an uplifting experience that has
a profound effect on men’s lives. The retreat begins at
5:00 PM Friday and ends after the 5:30 PM mass on Sunday.
For those on the South Shore round trip transportation is
provided from St. Dominic Church. Please don’t ignore this
opportunity but pray on it instead. Register at https://
