Imagine you are having a few friends over for dinner. Time comes to move to the living room for more some after dinner conversation. However, you notice your guests looking around & casually observing the layout of your living room- what carpet you’ve chosen, what pictures you have framed, & what furniture you have in the room. You notice a few awkward looks being exchanged & you take note to inspect the room later after everyone has left for the night.After the crowd leaves, you step back and start asking honest questions: “Is this the best I can do? Would this be a place that I’d like to come back to if I didn’t live here?” The answers may startle you a little bit...but the good news is that after you take an honest assessment of what needs to be fixed, you are well on your way to upgrading your house’s layout for good...So, if you have a living room & want to upgrade to a better setup, there are many things you can do to make it look better. Here are a few of them.1) Invest in high quality picture frames. This is something that a lot of people seem to overlook when designing their living room layouts. Picture frames can range anywhere from the mega cheap that you can pick up for $5 at the local big box store, to hundreds of dollars from specialty frame shops. Investing in quality picture frames with good looking glossy wood can make a simple picture look like a million bucks. Quality frames are a very easy way to make a living room really come alive. Take a quick trip to your local specialty frame shop to see what can be done for your pictures, degrees, & awards.2) A quality living room entertainment center can really add to the layout of your living room. In case you don’t know, an entertainment center (or ‘media center’) is the big piece of furniture that holds your stereo, TV, radio & more. In most houses, it’s located

pushed against the far wall, far away from the en-trance to the room & it’s usually made out of wood or metal. Take the time to shop around for a high quality entertainment center that matches your other furniture & your room’s overall layout. But, before doing so, write out all the things you want the entertainment center to hold & their dimensions. There are THOUSANDS of different types of entertainment centers & no matter what you have, one exists to fit all your stuff. Once you know what you need, shop around.3) Finally, closely examine the entire layout of the room as a whole & get an honest 3rd party to critique it. Consider hiring an interior decorator to just come in & critique the living room when it’s close to finished for a couple hundred bucks. This can be tricky to do because you want an honest opinion but you also don’t want someone who’s going to make up all sorts of extras that you allegedly need & soon you find yourself shelling out thousands in extra upgrades that really aren’t necessary. Getting a 3rd party’s opinion can be priceless if you can find someone who’ll tell you the truth.Follow these tips to enhance your living room’s layout & you’re guests will admire your ‘taste’ in decorating...just don’t tell them you had help!

Have you ever thought of re-inventing bathroom decor using dark/chocolate bathroom styles? Really how tempting would chocolate colored walls look in your bathroom! Imagine walking into dark wood bathrooms with specialty or dim lighting and subtly decorated wall tiling. The entire aura magnified by the presence of dark/chocolate bathroom cabinets.

This is the modern era and hence, to keep in-style with the essence of modernism, you can re-decorate your bathroom in such a way that it feels like a part of the entire home and also transforms into what we call the “classic dark bathrooms”. It doesn’t take much of an effort to convert your existing bathroom into something that is no less than a slice of paradise! You will have to start with the walls or the tiles and then go up all the way to the top or the ceiling.

But the true mood of the bathroom decor can only be set if you add some dark colored steam showers, cabinets, and dark/chocolate bathroom vanities. If you use color contrasts like dark/chocolate bathroom layouts with light and misty colored floor tiles then your bathroom will transform into a place where you can get maximum relaxation. Bathrooms have, for a long time, served multiple purposes from being a place you can take a shower in to being a retreat for a tired mind and body. A beautifully decorated and color coordinated bathroom is an ideal island of peace and tranquility.

And a dark or chocolate colored bathroom can be soothing and prove to be a paradigm in terms of décor. Studies have shown that dark/chocolate bathroom styles can uplift your spirit and make you feel much more at peace. Of course, if you do plan to carry out the changes in décor, it is not necessary that you have to have classic dark bathrooms where everything from vanities to the wood, tiles and even shower tubs have a dark tint on them. Look at it more from the point of view of it being a place of fun. Experiment with different colors but set the basic tones with dark/chocolate bathroom layouts.

You can use everything from the dark and mysterious wooden tone to the revealing dark chocolate tones. In between, you can spray the walls or the doors with hues of chocolate such as cream or caramel. Using contrast well is the key; for example: if you are planning to use dark/chocolate bathroom cabinets then give the bathroom walls a misty, cloudy, light chocolate look so that everything just blends in. If you are planning to use wood bathrooms then a few small plants, a book rack, a white sand colored bathtub, and dark/chocolate bathroom vanities would give it just the right feel.

On the other hand, you can install dark colored steam showers and paint your imagination on the wall tiles using hues and mix of dark and light colors to bring out the true essence of having something extraordinary! There are many choices available in products and finishes that will allow you to be ultra creative and come up with a bathroom design that will truly astonish you.

(NC)—House fires and similar domestic disasters are all-too-common during the holidays. The causes vary, and they can range from indoor hazards to outdoor accidents. For example, a tree decorated with worn or damaged holiday lights can be a serious shock or fire risk.

CSA International wants to help Canadians keep the festive season safe by reminding them of the following lighting tips this season:

• Out with the old: Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections.

• Size them up: Unplug light strings before replacing bulbs and check to ensure replacement bulbs match the voltage and wattage of the original. Make certain that bulb reflectors are the correct size for the light string.

• Out when about: Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house unattended or as quiet as a mouse. At the office, ensure that decorative lights are turned off after business hours. Use an outdoor timer certified by CSA International or another recognized organization to switch lights on and off automatically. Keep lights off until after 7 p.m. to avoid peak electric-ity times.

• Look for the label: When purchasing light strings, extension cords and electrical decorations, look for the CSA International certification mark, which provides assurance that the products comply with applicable standards for safety and performance. Also, ensure that outdoor light strings, cords, spotlights and flood-

lights are certified by CSA International and marked for outdoor use.

• Don’t be tacky: Never hang decorations from fire sprinklers, or allow them to obstruct exit corridors or exit signs, fire extinguishers and hose cabinets. Never tack or staple lighting strings or extension cords to a wall or cubicle. When hanging lights outdoors, keep electrical connectors above ground, out of puddles and snow, and away from metal eavestroughs. Use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks to hold light strings in place.

• That’s a wrap: After the holidays, wrap and store lights and decorations in the original packaging, as it likely contains a manufacturer’s instructions on replacement bulbs and details for proper product use. Remove outdoor lights promptly after the holiday sea-son to avoid damage caused by extended exposure to harsh weather conditions.

• Candle concerns: Do not use open flames or candles on or near flammable materials such as wreaths, trees or paper decorations.

• Don’t get juiced: Before working with outdoor wiring, turn off the electricity to the supply outlet and unplug the connection.

• Pardon the interruption: Whenever possible, connect all outdoor lighting into receptacles protected by weatherproof ground fault circuit interrupters. These can provide protection from electric shock by sensing ground leakage and cutting electrical power.

How to Determine the Right Height of Barstools at HomeHeight is a key factor in working out the right height of your barstools so that you and your guests are at a comfortable level and posture when seated at your home bar or kitchen table

For example, taking into account the fact that any typical bar stool is about 29” to 31” tall from floor to its seat, you may have situations where you’d need tall barstools at home. Before shopping, you should know what your requirements in terms of barstool height are. What this also means is that a bar stool of standard size would go well with a 41” to 43” tall table. On other hand, for shorter tables, a chair or counter stool may be a better fit. Measure the height of your table so that you buy the barstools of the right height. However, there may be specific places or situations where you would need tall barstools at home because standard size barstools prove to be inadequate.

In fact, tall bar stools are gaining popularity, and the need for taller seats is being felt more and more for accessing higher counters and tables in new homes. There are several instances when you may require extra tall barstools.

Situations that Require Tall Bar Stools at Home1. Traditionally, you should allow around 8 to 12” of space from the seat top to underside of the table to let room for individuals of all heights and sizes to be seated comfortably. However, if your tables are higher than standard size then it becomes hard to reach food & beverages. That’s exactly where tall barstools will help!

2. Many people now work on their laptops while seated at their counters.

For this, they need to get a taller armless barstool that lets them to hang your arms slightly lower. This allows them to get a bit further away from the keyboard and ease tension in forearms.

3. One needs to pay attention to the needs of taller people as well. For a person 6 foot 3” or taller, the

standard height stools (30”) can be uncomfortable for their posture. Here too, the tall barstools come in handy, as they will let the taller people be seated comfortably; their feet well placed on the foot rail.

Before you purchase your fireplace mantel shelf you will want to measure the area where you would like your mantel to go. Ideally, your shelf should be at least as long as your fireplace. Most shelves range between 50 and 90 inches. It is usually better to buy a longer shelf than a shorter one as it can also very attractive to have a fireplace mantel that extends beyond the edges of your fireplace, as opposed to vice versa. Most fireplace mantel shelves are installed 5 feet off the floor, but the most important consideration is whether your shelf is installed at a safe distance from any flames. You can also install a fireplace mantel as a conventional shelf along any wall to add a flourish to any décor. Wherever you plan to install your fireplace mantel, be sure that it can be secured to wood studs or a brick surface. Most mantel shelves are fairly simple to install and come with installation instructions. However, if you do not feel completely comfortable or do not have the proper tools, you may want to consider hiring a contractor.

(NC)—As the cooler weather arrives, there’s nothing more relaxing then cozying up to the warmth of your fireplace. However, each year accidents involving fireplaces are a major cause of home fires. The good news is that these fires can be prevented, with a few safety precautions.

Before you light that first fire of the season, keep your family and home safe by following these simple safety tips:

• Control your fire: Use a screen on your fireplace and leave glass doors open to avoid creosote build up that could lead to a chimney fire.

• Build it right: Place logs at the rear of the fireplace on a supporting grate and do not overload your fireplace.

• Fuel the fire safely: Never use gas or any other flammable liquids to rekindle or light a fire; they can easily cause accidents.

• Hazardous materials: Do not burn any kind of trash, wrapping paper or greenery.

• Ashes: Make sure ashes have cooled down before you throw them out.

• Inspections: Have your fireplace

inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney specialist.

“It is easy to say ‘My home and contents are covered’, but many people don’t realize the emotional toll that losing all of their possessions, heirlooms, pictures and personal documents can take. A few easy steps can help prevent a personal catastrophe and a great amount of stress,” states Wayne Ross insurance and claims expert for Aviva Canada.

It’s also good practice to keep a fire extinguisher close at hand and ensure that your home is equipped with working smoke alarms. With the winter season being an active time for fireplaces, these easy steps will ensure you can safely enjoy fireplace warmth with your family.

(NC)—The first Christmas card was created in 1843 by Englishman Henry Cole. Since he was too busy to write a personal holiday greeting, Cole hired well-known London artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card he could send to all his acquaintances. The cards made use of the religious symbolism of the day with panels depicting the virtues of feeding and clothing the poor.

“Since the mid-19th century, the Christmas card has evolved to reflect the traditions and trends of society,” says Dara Greene, spokesperson for Hallmark Canada. “Advances in technology have also made their mark on Christmas cards including four-colour printing in the 1940s, embossing techniques in the 1960s and digital developments in the 2000s, like the new family album card that comes with a DVD with templates for creating a photo album to send to friends.”

In the 1920s, early Hallmark Christmas cards featured commissioned paintings from Canadian artists, including the Group of Seven. Movies were becoming a major form of entertainment in the 1930s and some of the new animated stars, such as Mickey Mouse, began appearing on Christmas cards.

The custom of exchanging Christmas cards with faraway friends was boosted during the war years of the 1940s. A Hallmark card from the 1950s showed Santa with Cold War jitters and a message that read “Peace on Earth.”

Psychedelic colours that were so popular in the 1960s spawned many Christmas cards with decidedly untraditional designs. Cards of the early 1970s celebrated achievements in space. As the public slimmed down during the health craze, so did Santa. The jolly old St. Nick portrayed on cards of this decade is visibly thinner. The “me decade” of the 1980s gave way to the “we decade” of the 1990s, bringing a renewed interest in family and home life. Christmas cards reflected this “new traditionalism” with old-fashioned trees, wreaths and other traditional design elements.

“Today, Christmas cards have metamorphosed once again,” Greene concludes. “Technology has spawned a new breed of cards, such as the DVD family album card, that truly speaks to today’s generation.”

The simple ingredients used are ketchup, warm honey, lemon’s juice, butter, Louisiana sauce, white vinegar, chopped tomato, garlic and onion and dry cayenne peppers. Buffalo hot wing sauce has become an institution to reckon with, based on these readily available items-unbelievable, is it not? Well, age-old experience and a one-track dedication towards maintaining a unique health conscious formula has made Buffalo hot wing sauce a legend in the hot wing barbecue sauce industry.

Most barbecue sauces mix a sour, sweet and spicy taste. Much in demand, hot wing sauces are tomato based with vinegar and sugar as the key components. However, Buffalo hot wing sauce is preservative free with no MSG, cholesterol or sugars. Buffalo Wing Time sauces were developed specially for health freaks who would go for a wing and the treadmill afterwards, with equal zest.

A sauce or a wing sauce, Buffalo is always the one, on which you can rely blindfolded. The production procedure of Buffalo wing sauce is a marvel in itself. Every production batch of Buffalo sauce is kept purposefully small, so that production value remains at its optimum best. Each buffalo container is individually handled so that quality and consistency is not compromised under any circumstance.

Each Buffalo hot wing sauce container comes with a helpful and easy to comprehend cooking manual. A Buffalo’s novelty does not lie in being original; its success lies in packaging age-old wisdom in a novel way. It

encourages barbecues and broiling. Research has it, that the traditional deep fat frying methods of preparing wings is nutrient destroying, to say nothing of the accumulated fat. Buffalo is what a wing sauce should be; very few people have been able to stop after using it once.

The Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing Sauce has the original recipe of Frank & Teresa. Way back in 1964, they had hit off the recipe that went on to become a success. The Wing Time Garlic Buffalo Wine Sauce is a garlic tinged lip smacker.

Buffalo Wings Recipe

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup butter• 1/4 cup Louisiana hot sauce • 1 dash ground pepper• 1 dash garlic powder• 1/2 cup flour• 1/4 teaspoon paprika• 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper• 1/4 teaspoon salt• 10 chicken pieces• Vegetable oil for frying

Directions

Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375 degrees. You want just enough oil to cover the wings entirely, an inch or so deep at least. Combine the butter, hot sauce, ground pepper, and garlic powder in a small saucepan over low heat. Heat until the butter is melted and the ingredients are well blended.

Combine the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt in a small bowl. If the wings are frozen, be sure to defrost and dry them. Put the wings into a large bowl and sprinkle the flour mixture over them, coating each wing evenly. Put the wings in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 minutes. (This will help the breading to stick to the wings when fried.)

Put all the wings into the hot oil and fry them for 10 to 15 minutes or until some parts of the wings begin to turn dark brown. Remove the wings from the oil to a paper towel to drain. But don’t let them sit too long, because you want to serve the wings hot. Quickly put the wings into a large bowl. Add the hot sauce and stir, coating all the wings evenly. You could also use a large plastic container with a lid for this. Put all the wings inside the container, add the sauce, put on the lid, and then shake. Serve with Bleu cheese, Ranch, or other salad dressing and celery sticks on the side.

Yields: 2 to 4 servings.

• 200g sweetened, flaked coconut (dessicated will do, but it won’t be quite as moist)• 200g sweetened condensed milk• 2 pieces stem ginger, chopped• 1/2 tsp vanilla extract• good pinch of salt• 1 large egg white• dark chocolate or milk chocolate to decorate (optional)

Preheat the oven to 170°C (150°C if using fan-forced oven.) Line a large baking sheet with a Teflon sheet or baking parchment.

Mix the coconut, condensed milk, ginger, vanilla and salt together until well combined. Set aside. Whisk the egg white in a very clean bowl until it holds stiff peaks. Carefully fold egg white into the coconut mixture.

Drop large spoonfuls of the mixture onto the prepared sheet, making sure to make each mound quite tall. Space well as they will spread. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and firm on top. Cool on the tray. Once cool, you can decorate the macaroons with melted chocolate if you want to.

For many years I have been looking for alternatives to Christmas shopping. I find the crowds annoying, the pushing and shoving unnecessary and parking a nightmare. Having to buy all those presents in a few days shopping after working all day or on a Saturday when everyone and his cousin is doing the same thing takes away from the joy of really appreciating the true meaning of Christmas. I made a plan to do things differently.

The idea came to me when I was out looking for a special present. On every aisle they had gift box ideas. I thought why not take a box and personalize it. I had a friend who loved to read. I bought her a book by her favorite author, put a mug inside with a gourmet hot chocolate tucked in the cup and an aromatic candle. All told the Christmas basket cost me eleven dollars and I knew she would be thrilled with the thoughtfulness of my choices.

For many of my family members I make Christmas baskets full of goodies. For those of you who are familiar with making jellies or canning there are hundreds of recipes that are very easy to fix, require little time and are so much more fun than the traditional tie or sweater. Some choices are zucchini pineapple preserves, jalapeno jelly, lavendar sugar, chocolate coffee, or spiced tea. Make your own gourmet instant soups. All of these are incredibly easy to make and take very little time and can be made months in advance of December. Wonderful Christmas baskets!

If you have a backyard garden try making your own spaghetti sauce, enchilada sauce, pickles or relishes. All vegetables can be dried as well as herbs. Why not try dehydrated tomatoes, bell peppers, squash or onions. Following the directions of your dehydrator chop herbs finely or thinly slice fruits, dry and put into zip lock bags. Keep in

the freezer until time to pack into your Christmas baskets and deliver.

Every cook loves fresh herbs. Plant seeds a couple of months ahead of time in very small pots and put under growing lights. Chives, parsley, rosemary, or different mints are favorites. Including these in your Chistmas baskets will make you a favorite of any cook. These are beautiful gifts to give and receive.

For your favorite gardener put a variety of flower or vegetable seeds, bulbs, a favorite tool, gloves or a unique garden ornament into your Christmas basket.

The last ten years I have been making goody baskets for my siblings and immediate family. They have been a huge hit. I bought several 12inch x12inch x 8inch baskets at my local hobby store. In each basket I put a jar of homemade spa-ghetti sauce, relish or pickle, packages of dried herbs and a jar or two of jelly, homemade pint bag of 12 bean soup, hot cocoa or chocolate coffee.

The exact list that goes into the Christ-mas basket changes from year to year depending on how much gardening I have an opportunity to do; new ideas or recipes I have found. The wonderful thing is my Christmas baskets are ready to be packed in August or September at the end of the gardening season and I didn’t have to beat the rush or the crowds. I hope this has inspired you to try something new this gift-giving season. Try Christmas baskets!

Dear Reena,I very much enjoy your column in our local newspaper and have benefitted by the great tips you give. I had Silestone counter tops installed in my new house 4 years ago and made the big mistake, at great expense, of having them honed because I like a matt effect. Unfortunately, they show every mark and although the marks can be wiped off, the result is uneven and unsatisfactory. I have tried granite cleaner but the surface is still patchy. Is there something I can apply to provide a more overall finish? Outside of removing them I am stuck with countertops which irritate me every time I look at them! Many thanks, Sylvia

Dear Sylvia,I wouldn’t call honed Silestone a mistake however it is true that matte finish isn’t quite as carefree as the polished version. Silestone recommends the use of a conditioner: “The use of a conditioner is purely temporary and will require either repeat applications to maintain a consistent luster on the surface or thorough cleaning to remove it.” Daily cleaner for honed Silestone should be a pH balanced general-purpose household cleaner such as dish soap, and water.

Hi Reena,I hope you can help me with the cork floor in my kitchen. We have had cork flooring for quite some time but lately chips have come off on some places. How can I fix this? I hope you can help me.Sincerely, Ineke

Hello Ineke,Cork comes from the bark of the Cork Oak (Quercus Suber). The bark is harvested approximately every 9 years without causing any harm to the tree. As a result, cork is a truly sustainable flooring product but even the best things in life have its ups and downs. To repair the damaged floor; begin by confirming that your floors are solid cork and not veneer. Veneer cork cannot be repaired or sanded and must be replaced. To replace veneered cork, remove molding and pry up the damaged plank, replace with a new cork plank (you may want to call a professional to help with this). Solid cork floors can be sanded using an electric floor sander or coarse grade sandpaper wrapped around a block. Next use fine grade sandpaper to smooth the area. Clean the floor as normal. Check manufacturer’s finish to determine if the floor has oil or polyurethane finish. Finish by applying two coats of the correct finish (allow first coat to dry thoroughly before applying the second coat).

Dear Reena,I have found your solutions so helpful. I would like to know how you can get rid of silverfish in my apartment. Lois

Hi Lois,A mixture of 2 tbsp. powdered (icing) sugar and 1 cup borax spread in a few places along baseboards should do the trick to get rid of silverfish. Take caution around children and

pets, borax is poisonous if ingested. It is also important to note that in order to zap silverfish permanently you will want to get rid of all excess moisture in the basement by purchasing a good quality dehumidifier. If infestation continues please contact a fumigation service.

Fabulous Tips and Feedback from Readers:

To flatten a milk jug; pour about a cup of boiling water into it. Put the lid back on tightly. Shake very gently until it is all swollen and hot. Carefully take the lid off, pour out water and place on the floor, handle side down. Step carefully in the middle just to push it down enough to make the ends start to collapse then move your feet one at a time to flatten each end. Keep standing, moving around a bit, until it is cool. Voila! Flat as a pancake and it stays that way so that ever-so-many can be packed side by side in a box. Joy

With regards to broken light bulbs stuck inside the socket, I like to put a bit of “Never-seize” on the threads of the base. Also, if you rotate the pliers clockwise, as you suggested, you will only screw the base in tighter. I find it works best to use a pair of needle nose pliers and insert between the base and socket, turn counter clockwise, this splits the base and collapses it and makes it easier to remove. Keep up the good suggestions. Gerry

Hi Reena, I wish I had seen your solution to the fruit fly problem a few weeks ago, as we had an infestation in our house. May I suggest using a vacuum to suck the little buggers up instead of using hairspray? Once the flies are gone, dispose of the vacuum bag. Trish

Hello Reena,A few months ago a reader wrote in regarding mold on her bathroom tiles and her lack of success in removing it. I had the same problem - I removed it successfully using Fantastic with bleach. It took two applications and saved us from ripping out the tiles and replacing them. Anonymous

Dear Friends ;

For close to 100 years, residents of Melville and area have known that a lot of sport enthusiasts have come through our minor system or even played amateur or professional sports at different locations.

Now we are going to recognize them in our “Tourism Track of Success”. When the City of Melville built a new tourism centre in the north side of town, the management of the Tourism group decided to turn the dusty Kragel into an attractive green area, with grass, trees and shrubs. Once established, this area appeared to be an ideal spot for picnic lunches and an extension of the City’s Silhouette Program.

Current, or former residents who probably hit the bit times on the National or International stage, could apply to have a silhouette honouring them on Melville’s “Track of Success”!

The first person honoured was Melville’s namesake “Charles Melville Hays”. While he was the head of the Grand Truck Railway, he chose Melville as a main crew turnaround point. Prior to completing the rail link across Canada, Hays went to England to raise money for his venture. Unfortunately, on his trip back across the ocean, he perished on the maiden voyage of the ill-fated Titanic.

The second silhouette belongs to a decorated First World War vet who studied Pharmacy and came to Melville to open up its first Drug Store. Our local Legion is named after Robert G. Comlie VC and they proudly display his silhouette on the “Track of Success”.

The silhouette pictured above is in recognition of Tim Cheveldae. Tim or “Chevy” as his friends refer to him, grew up and played his minor hockey in Melville, as well as one year of junior hockey with the Melville Millionaires. After a stint

with the Western Junior Hockey League, he had a distinguished career playing goalie in the NHL. Tim has continued to support Melville in most of their major fund raisers, never forgetting his roots.

Since our “Track of Success” has only just begun, we hope for many more heroes to be recognized in the coming years.

Not only is Melville known for its hockey heroes, but also baseball greats, Olympians, and other day-to-day people who excelled in their professions. While Melville moves forward with its new multi-million dollar communiplex, other things like a potash mill, new hotel, new businesses expand other businesses.

Don’t forget Melville on January 9, 2010 for the Olympic Torch Run.

Sincerely yours,

Micheal G. W. HalykManager, Tourism Melville, City of Melville Economic Development

TOURISM TRACK OF SUCCESS!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! FROM MELVILLE BUSINESSES

Issue #48- Dec. 3/09 Page 33MERRY CHRISTMAS!! FROM MELVILLE BUSINESSES

While former Melville resident Tim Cheveldae certainly has had his share of accolades, Sunday was a day he won’t soon forget. Cheveldae was in the city Sunday to attend the unveiling of a new silhouette that will grace Melville’s Track of Success as a reminder to the folks of the city that he hasn’t forgotten his roots--and that we haven’t forgotten him. A number of people braved the cold and wet weather to see the silhouette of the former NHL all-star and afterwards, most of the attendees convened to the Royal Canadian Legion hall for a good, old-fashioned hot stove session hosted by former Fox FM personality Mike Stackhouse. Mayor Walter Streelasky was thrilled to add Cheveldae’s likeness to those of Melville Hayes and R.C. Combe near the Melville Tourism center. “Tim has always been wonderful to the city of Melville,” Streelasky says. “We’re a city of silhouettes and I’m proud to add Tim’s silhouette to the others on our Track of Success.” “Any time we’ve wanted or needed something for the city, Tim has always been one of the first people to get on board with a donation of some kind,” says Melville’s economic development officer Micheal Halyk.

“This was very humbling,” says Cheveldae, best known as a goaltender for a trio of National Hockey League clubs, most notably the Detroit Red Wings and the now defunct Winnipeg Jets. “When you’re a kid growing up in Melville you’re always thinking that you’re too far away from the kind of success you can have as an athlete or a person, but I hope today this can give some kids hope and inspiration to follow their dreams.”

‘Chevy’, as he was known during his career played from 1988 to 1997, established himself as a workhorse of a goaltender. “That’s one of the things I’m proudest of,” says the soft-spoken firefighter, who now resides in Saskatoon, where he played three seasons for the Western Hockey League Blades. “To be able to play 72 games in a season is really hard because you have to have a certain amount of mental toughness.”

After a few seasons in the minors with the Adirondack Red Wings, Cheveldae hit the big-time to stay as the starting goaltenders for one of

hockey’s more storied franchises, the Detroit Red Wings in the ‘90-’91 season. The one-time NHL all-star retired from hockey after the ‘97-’98 season and landed as a coach with the Saskatoon Blades.

Cheveldae has many great memories of Melville, with one constant running through most of them. “Honestly, I remember playing at Kinsmen Park. In winter we played hockey and in summer we played ‘tennis-ball baseball’ and football...when I drive past there now I can’t help but think of all the fun we had there.”

In Cheveldae’s young life as an athlete, he was taken under the wing of coach Al Walls, who had a tremendous impact on him, as a player of sports and as a person. “I can remember Al calling time to send a player out to apologize to an umpire for slamming his batting helmet down,” chuckles Cheveldae. “He taught me all about being ‘professional’ as a kid and he also taught me to respect the game.”

Cheveldae is still involved with hockey as a coach for the Saskatoon Blazers AAA Midget Club and, while playing in the NHL might be the dream of most Canadian youngsters, Chevy still has one wish he’d like to fulfill. “I’d love to buy a motorhome and drive to every single major league ballpark,” Cheveldae admits. “My wife Mary says as long as there’s a mall close to each of them, we can go.”

The Bailey name has long been associated with funeral services in Melville, every since W. T. (Bill) Bailey was the community’s funeral director during the first half of the twentieth century, starting in 1914.

He was later assisted by his son Ray Bailey. It was here that W. Allan Bailey, the founder and president of Bailey’s Funeral Home, was first introduced to the profession, assisting his grandfather and father.

In 1983, Allan Bailey opened a Chapel in Melville, bringing the family name back to the community after an absence of about three decades.

The Melville Chapel is located at 101 Fifth Avenue West.

To ensure that a funeral ceremony is truly a reflection of the life lived, we appreciate the opportunity to explain the options available to you, and the services we provide.

We want to ensure that you understand your choices, and have the information you need to make a decision when you are ready.

(NC)—We’ve all been overtaken by speed demons trying to make it through the next light without stopping. They pick up the pace, put the pedal to the metal and screech out in front hoping to gain that minute or two advantage. Sometimes, for all their speeding, those same drivers arrive at the light at the same time as we do. Have you ever wondered how much fuel they burn and how much time they really save?

According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), speeding and aggressive driving burns excessive fuel, wastes money

and does not save a significant amount of time. If someone told you that you could save two minutes of time by burning up to 39 per cent more fuel would you do it? Would it be worth it? With gasoline prices skyrocketing in many Canadian cities, and with growing concerns for the environment, does it really make sense to speed and drive aggressively?

Save yourself some money and slow down. You can find more money-saving driving tips at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.

newscanadawww.newscanada.com

Does Speeding Really Save You Time?

(NC)—Tires are often the most neglected parts of a vehicle. And yet, they are among the most important and easily cared for. By adopting these few simple tire maintenance practices, you can increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, reduce harmful emissions, save money and make your vehicle safer:

• Measure your tire pressure monthly using a good quality tire gauge. A visual inspection is not sufficient to detect under or over-inflation problems;

• Have your tires aligned and balanced according to the schedule found in your owner’s manual;

• A general guideline for tire rotation is every 10,000 km, but check your owners manual for the recommended interval;

• Monitor tread wear and replace tires when your tire tread is worn out;

• Conduct a visual check for embedded stones, glass and other foreign objects that could work their way into the tire and cause a leak.

Head Into Winter With ConfidenceAttention!! Hyundai Owners

You don’t need us to tell you that Canadian winter weather brings special challenges with it. There’s no better way to deal with them than by ensuring your Hyundai is in top condition before the first snow falls. When you bring your vehicle to your Hyundai dealer, it will be serviced by specially trained professionals who spend each and every day working on Hyundai vehicles. They’re knowledgeable, experienced, and know your vehicle inside and out - spotting and solving small problems before they lead to potential repairs.

Call and book your Winter Maintenance Package today!Nitrofill Nitrogen maintains your tire pressure far better than regular air because the oxygen molecules in compressed air are much smaller and leak out 3 to 4 times faster. Air also contains oxygen and moisture that rots your tires and corrodes your wheels and valves.

BY FILLING YOUR TIRES WITH NITROGEN YOU’LL GET BETTER FUEL ECONOMY, LONGER TIRE LIFE, IMPROVED SAFETY...AND SO MUCH MORE.

** THE NITROFILLAUTO CLUB PROVIDES: Tire Repair and Replacement Coverage 24 Hour Emergency Road Service 24 Hour Emergency Battery Service 24 Hour Emergency Delivery Service Travel Benefits Trip Routing Service Theft/Hit and Run Protection Trip Interruption Coverage Lost key and lockout service AND SO MUCH MORE!

As a special bonus, purchase the Winter Maintenance Package and you’ll receive a set of Vivatar® binoculars, free. They’re regularly a $29.95 value.

These binoculars offer powerful 7x50 magnification, rubberized handgrips, fold-down eyecups and ruby-coated optics for glare-free viewing.

Hurry. Quantities are limited.

We’ll change your oil and filter and top up all your fluids. Conduct a visual mechanical inspection, check your brakes and provide you with a written Vehicle Inspection Report. (NC)—Whether we experience a mild winter or harsh storms this year, the cold season can cause unsafe driving conditions, property damage, and safety concerns. By preparing your car and home in advance, you can reduce winter’s impact on you and your family.

Ensure you car remains reliable and safe on the road by doing the following:

• Equip your car with climate appropriate tires, wiper blades and washer fluid.

• Have your anti-freeze, hoses, clamps, belts, steering, suspension and braking systems checked.

• Carry emergency equipment including jumper cables, flashlight, extra batteries, flares, a shovel, first aid kit, basic hand tools and blankets.

The winter weather can not only damage your home’s exterior, but inadequate insulation will put a strain on your heating system, which results in higher utility bills.

Protect your home and save on energy costs by doing the following:

• Conserve heat by installing storm windows and insulating your attic.

• Have chimneys cleaned; install a carbon monoxide detector and fresh batteries into smoke alarms.

• Caulk around windows to prevent cold air from seeping in.

• Have a power-outage kit stocked for your home, that includes a flashlight, lantern, matches, glow-in-the-dark stick lights, wind-up clock, portable radio, manual can opener and mylar blanket.

“Before the winter season hits us, take precautions with your vehicle and home, especially if you can save money down the road. It’s also a good time to review your homeowners’, auto and liability insurance policies, to see if they provide the protection you need,” states Wayne Ross, insurance and claims expert for Aviva Canada.

More information is available from your insurance broker, online at www.changeinsurance.ca or toll-free at 1-866-My Aviva (692-8482).

Do you love your car just the way it is, or are you looking to fix ‘er up the way you really want it to be? If you’re the creative type who wants to do things your way, why not take advantage of the great car body kits that are available from reputable parts dealers? You can stop in at the local neighborhood store to check out and select the parts that will bring your vehicle up to speed, so to speak. Or you can virtually browse online websites to find the parts you want to make your car everything you need.A well-stocked auto supply kit knows your car better than you do. The associates can give you a quick rundown on what you can do to make your car better, faster, and more efficient in no time flat. They can give you detailed instructions and precise parts for any make, model, and year of vehicle, truck, or SUV you have in mind. For example, check out the wing spoiler and ground spoiler kits for your Mercury Cougar. Easy to install with solid, durable materials, you will love the way your car cruises after adding features like these.Make sure you have the know-how to do the job right. If you don’t, look around for someone who can do it for you at a fair rate. While a dealership or auto garage can put in the labor to add your new options, they could charge steep rates, so you may want to look elsewhere for help. Follow instructions carefully, and contact the parts dealer if you come up short a bolt or two. While you may feel that the part is secure minus the extra hardware, it isn’t worth having it come loose and scrape the body finish or even detach because you don’t feel like tracking the extra parts.

Compare prices, as they can vary widely from one dealership to another. Become familiar with some of the construction techniques and materials used to create the parts you want to add to your car.

Sometimes you can find basically the same feature under a different name for a much lower cost. Do your homework and take some time to shop area stores as well as online websites. Remember, there’s one born every day, so don’t become a statistical scam victim by purchasing parts that won’t hold up or may even be “hot.”It may be a good idea to check out the latest product reviews on the various car product websites online. You can visit chat rooms or discussions boards, and also read the detailed reviews that are often found on the Web. Posted by those in the know, you can learn more in ten minutes of reading sometimes than you can from talking with a parts dealer associate.After installing your new body parts, keep them well maintained so that they last and help your vehicle become everything you want it to be.

(NC)—When it comes to purchasing a new vehicle, you might want to consider buying the most fuel-efficient one that meets your needs. Follow these tips to help you make an informed decision:

• Do some research before you leave home – The Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) website, www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca, lets you compare the fuel consumption of various makes and models of vehicles for a specific year;

• Check out the EnerGuide Label – Compare vehicles using the EnerGuide label that is found on all new cars. The label shows city and highway fuel consumption ratings and an estimated annual fuel cost for that particular vehicle. The values may not be perfect but they’re a start;

• Choose a vehicle that fits your everyday needs in terms of size and power – Put some serious thought into your space and cargo needs – do you really need a minivan when a compact would do? Passenger cars with smaller engines tend to deliver better fuel economy than those with larger engines. Keep in mind horsepower levels have doubled over the past two decades and the

power available in today’s subcompact cars exceeds that of many midsize sedans of the mid-1980s;

• Choose a manual instead of an automatic transmission – Look for the transmission option that minimizes fuel consumption. Generally speaking, manuals will use less fuel, saving up to 100 litres a year;

• Two-wheel drive vs. four-wheel drive – The added weight and drivetrain losses you get with four-wheel and ‘all-wheel’ drive systems increase fuel consumption. Although all-wheel drive can offer better traction when accelerating under slippery conditions, it doesn’t assist in turning or braking; there is no substitute for safe driving habits;

• Think about your extras – Accessories and power features can be a big drag on an engine, increasing fuel consumption. How much do you really need a sunroof or roof rack? Are they worth the increased fuel consumption and emissions?

Do your homework and watch your savings add up and your emissions go down.

(NC)—Canadians trying to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle might have a hard time without knowing how much fibre they’re consuming. According to a recent survey commissioned by Kellogg Canada, only 16 per cent of Canadians are consuming the Daily Recommended Intake of fibre. Here are some important facts about fibre:

Why we need itThe International Food Information Council explains that a high fibre diet can help weight managers feel fuller longer, improve digestive health and reduce the risks of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Where the confusion liesAccording to the Kellogg’s Fibre Survey, consumers don’t agree on what the best sources of fibre are, and mistakenly believe products that tout “whole grain” provide it. It’s important to check the Nutrition Facts on food packages for the grams of fibre per serving to ensure you are getting the maximum health benefits. Whole grain foods are good for us, but sources of whole grain and high fibre give us the health benefits of both.

Where we get itFibre comes from plant foods. As fibre travels through the digestive system, it can help promote health in many ways. Fibre is found in wheat bran and other types of bran, whole grain cereals and breads, legumes, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.Animal foods such as meat, poultry, fish and dairy products do not contain fibre.

How much we needThe Institute of Medicine (IOM) has established an Adequate Intake level for fibre as part of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for macronutrients. Since different age and gender groups eat a different amount of calories, the Adequate Intake for fibre varies among age and gender groups:

• Children aged 1-8 = 19-25 grams/day• Boys aged 9-18 = 31-38 grams/day• Girls aged 9-18 = 26 grams/day• Men aged 19-50 = 38 grams/day• Women aged 19-50 = 25 grams/day• Men aged 50+ = 30 grams/day• Women aged 50+ = 21 grams/day

More information on this topic is available online at www.kelloggsnutrition.ca.
