The emora Museums have a strong need for training in cataloguing and preservation. They also expressed interest in training programs / exchange for staff and volunteers.

Next steps

MAAS to do conservation assessment of VH-AMB and determine minimum facility requirements for loan of the object.Communicate requirements to Bill so they can investigate any necessary upgrades. MAAS can potentially partner to apply for grants to do this.Institutions to keep in touch about timelines as they develop. Indicated possible MAAS timeline of object being available for loan in 2021-2022 but details are unknown. If the loan proceeds it would likely be a 2-3 year loan period with the possibility of extension.

PURPOSETo inform the Director of the history of requests from Goulburn to have the Maudslay Beam Engine(B558) 'returned'.

BACKGROUNDThe museum has recently received a request by The General Manager of Goulburn Mulwaree Council to borrow the Maudslay Beam Engine currently on display and operating in Steam Revolution. The letter uses the imminent move of MAAS to Parramatta as a pretext for having the engine 'returned' to Goulburn.

During the 1990s a number of local enthusiasts, at the behest of a group who had redeveloped the Goulburn Brewery as a heritage experience, endeavoured to have the engine 'repatriated 'to brewery where the Engine was originally installed in 1837. They asked the director, but also wrote to The Premier and the Minister for the Arts seeking their support.

Then Director, Terence Measham, advised the Government that the engine belonged to the Museum (donated in 1929), that it was an important part of our display and that it had the best long term preservation prospects with MAAS.

The GM Council may be seeking loan but the use of the term 'returned' suggests that there is a belief that the Engine in some way belongs to Goulburn. The site being proposed now is not the Engine original site.

Much is made about the importance of the context to the significance of the object — being from Goulburn — but the engineer is very significant in its own right.

Henry Maudslay is recognised as the founder of precision engineering. To our knowledge it is the only engine of its type in the world. The time ball (H10401) on top of the Sydney Observatory is made by the Maudslay, Sons and Field Company. The Barton lathe (2009/1) was made by Maudslay himself.

The Museum has spent a lot of money on its restoration, operation and on-going conservation.

It would cost a lot of money to install the engine at Goulburn. It would not be done for a short loan.

It is possible that the Council will pursue the matter further and that we may have to respond to questions from the State Government.

RECOMMENDATIONThat the attached letter pointing out that the engine is still on display and we have no intention toentertain loan request at this stage.

I confirmed the measurements for all the rolling stock currently on display and I will check the figures in Emu and amend as necessary (I did note that Emu states the tender for No 1 loco as being only 59 mm long!). I also rang Craig Parkinson who is our preferred train mover and discussed the movement of the rolling stock with him in regards to heights and special permits. None of our trains pose a problem as he has height clearance permits to 5 m and all our rolling stock will fit onto his range of floats and be below that height. We also talked about the Catalina movement and he has a float that is only 550 mm off the ground so it will suit for that transport as well. Pathways from the Museum to Castle Hill, Parramatta and Thirlmere are all OK for transport via road without the necessity to put them on the light rail track or even the heavy rail track.

I will arrange a time in the next couple of weeks for Craig and his partner to come into the Museum so that we can confirm our options for the potential removal of the rolling stock, Catalina and some of the other VLO's.

Craig is constantly moving all sorts of rail vehicles all over Australia and his partner is primarily involved with movement of houses and other wide and high loads. They don't foresee that any of our objects would fall into an over problematic loads but will confirm after they come in to see the objects.

Temora Aviatio Museum is a flying museum, with the 14 historic ex-military aircraft in its collection all operated on egular flying days. It is a non-profit Museum, set up by the private donations of David Lowy AM. Introductory static displays about the history of the site and military aviation include an exten ive oral history project of interviews with aviation veterans.

The Museum ha one large air-conditioned hanger for display of the aircraft, with dramatic lighting, large graphic dis lays, movable showcases and video interpretation. The aircraft are regularly moved in and out form. intenance checks and flying days.

A second hangar for maintenance work has a public viewing area with further interpretation and a model of the R • F No 10 Elementary Flying Training School that existed on the site during WWII.

In a recent agre ment, all the aircraft in the collection have been donated back to RAAF, who pays for their mainte ance. The Museum is not actively collecting, with the exception of possible future aircraft decomm ssioned by RAAF.

The Museum ha' an active events program with regular spring and autumn flying days attracting 1000 visitors. Th bi-annual Warbirds Down Under attracts 20000 people over a weekend. Operation of the aircraft is rganised by the Temora Historic Flight Club, all the pilots are RAAF reserve accredited.

Discussions with eter about the MAAS collection indicated that HARS (Albion Park) own and operate a Catalin and may be a useful starting contact for discussions about the MAAS Catalina.

I visited the site on Tuesday with Ralph and met a number of their key personnel. We had a look at the roundhouse where the bulk of their collection is stored and then went and inspected the smaller lock up shed wher they propose to store the tram and the hearse. The whole site has a high security fence similar to the one at the front of the Harwood car park that separates us from the pedestrian walkway except theirs has spikes on top. They also have a number of CCTV cameras at strategic locations And beam alarms across the front of the roundhouse. Most buildings are on an alarm system but the intended storage shed isn't. They are currently undergoing an upgrade of the alarm system of converting from analog to digital and it is intended to add the shed during theupgrade (not certai move the tram fror

iof the time frame for this). If the tram was to be loaned to them, they

wouldbetter display expo ure. Ralph is developing a checklist of what would need to be done in terms ofchecking and oiling prior to movement. I don't have any issues with this movement as they are fully accredited by the r. it regulator for train operations.

I just wanted to update you on discussions with Steam Tram and Railway Preservation Society / Valley Heights St am Tramway Museum, who last year requested the loan of the tramway hearse and Motor 1A for History Week events in 2018 and the 140th anniversary of the introduction of steam trams to S dney, this September.

We were able to facilitate a short loan of the tramway hearse for the history week events last September, for w ich they were very appreciative.

Their 140th anniversary celebrations have been scaled back to an open day on Sunday 29th c September and tti ey no longer wish to pursue the loan of the tram hearse or Motor 1A, but have extended the atta hed invitation for any of our staff to attend the event. Please let me know if you or any of your teams would like to go, and I can let Peter Stock know who to expect.

They are also ve keen to be considered in our regional program to house large objects following closure / during tlpe relocation phase, and will submit an EOI so this request can be formally acknowledged. Lo, ping Angelique in FYI.

The Powerhouse Museum will begin a staged closure from July 2020, closing to the public in July 2021, providing an opportunity to extend our connections in regional New South Wales.

Commencing in 2021, the four year Regional Partnerships Program will include multiple strands aimed at:

While we arle moving to Parramatta, we do not have a clear timetable for

that move and for now the engine remains an integral part of Steam Revolution, our perman I nt steam technology display and steaming program. It is likely to be part of o r program in our new location.

While we reICognise the significance of the engine to the Goulburn area it is also a very significant engine

in and of itself and is enjoyed by many visitors to the Powerhouse.

We would h li ppy to take you up on your offer to visit the Goulburn Waterworks but at this s age we are not ready to consider lending the Maudslay Beam Engine.
