FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Bishop Ward Families,

As we enter into the season of Advent, our hearts are filled with joy at the expectation of the birth of Our Lord. This is a special time in the Liturgical year, in which we prepare ourselves for our pilgrimage to the manger to celebrate Christ’s birth. The students at Bishop Ward prepare for this special time by helping those who may not otherwise be able to enjoy the fullness of the Christmas season. They are currently collecting gift cards to Wal-Mart and Price Chopper to help Wyandotte County families who need our assistance to experience the fullness of the joy of Christmas. Thank you for being role models of joyful giving for our students.

December also marks the start of the Winter Sports season as boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys wrestling begins. Please encourage your student to get involved by competing in or supporting our Winter Sports. The sports calendar is available on the Bishop Ward website. The joy of cheering on the Cyclones has been a tradition in Wyandotte County for generations.

We have offered a special program to help students prepare for the ACT, and a Career Day, to encourage them to discover careers they might like to explore, and search for colleges and majors they might be interest-ed in pursuing. Our students should be preparing for their future success beginning their freshmen year. It is never too early to begin investigating career interests and goals. Please keep in mind that some of our stu-dents might be experiencing a call from Christ to serve as ordained clergy or religious.

The students will have the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in December through their Theolo-gy classes. We will also celebrate together the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the patroness of the United States, on December 8, at 9:20 am. We also look to the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas, on December 12 with a Mass at 9:20a.m..

Please encourage those families you know who would like an excellent Catholic education for their student(s) to contact Ms. Karina Martinez, Admissions Director, for information on Admissions at (913) 371-1201.

Please know that you are in my prayers daily. I wish you blessings during the Advent season and the joy of celebrating the Birth of Christ once again this Christmas. I also wish you peace and blessings in the New Year.

In Christ,

Rev. Thomas Schrader, O. Carm.

President

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Thomas Schrader, O. Carm. Presidente

JUNIORS & SENIORS                                  NEED TO TAKE THE A.C.T. EXAM

ACADEMIC ADVISING OFFICE

Every higher education institution in the U.S. REQUIRES incoming students to take the ACT exam. This exam is used for placement into classes as well as scholarship eligibility. Many schools will not admit students or award scholarships without this exam.

Seniors are STRONGLY encouraged to take this test at least once, but preferably two or three times before they graduate. For college applications and scholarship applications, it is suggested that Seniors take the ACT in Sept. or Oct. because priority college applications are often due in December. Seniors should also take the ACT in Dec. or Feb. to try to strengthen scores.

Juniors are encouraged to take the ACT at least once during the year, to gain testing experience and to realize where more improvement may be needed in specific areas in preparation for Senior year testing. However, Juniors are strongly encouraged to take the ACT at least twice in their Junior year, such as the April and June test dates.

ACT registration must be done online by going to www.actstudent.org. A credit card must be used to pay for registration.

Bishop Ward's school code for the ACT registration is 171-555.

Please note, some colleges and universities (but not all schools) are now requiring the writing section of the ACT for admission. You will need to contact the Admissions Office at your school of interest to see what their specific requirements are.

Listed in the chart below are the dates for testing & the registration packet deadlines for the 2016-2017 school year. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Gregory or Mrs. Cramer in the Academic Advising Office.

Test Date Registration Deadline (Late Fee Required) Feb. 11, 2017 Jan. 13, 2017 Jan. 14-20, 2017 April 8, 2017 March 3, 2017 March 4-17, 2017 June 10, 2017 May 5, 2017 May 5-19, 2017

The cost to take the basic test without the writing exam is $42.50. The cost to take the test with the writing exam is $58.50. Late registration is $27.50 plus the registration fee. To take the test without registering until the day of the test, on a stand-by basis, add an additional $49.00 plus the registration fee. Test centers may not accept stand-by registrations. (Basic test on stand-by is $91.50. Test with writing exam on stand-by is $107.50.) Test date change fee is $24.00. Test center change fee (keeping the same date) is $25.00.

Photo I.D. is REQUIRED to register for the test AND on test day for all students.

Student athletes who are considering participation in athletics on a collegiate level, need to register with the eligibility center at the end of their junior year or beginning of senior year. Athletes will register with either the NAIA or the NCAA depending on what college they are planning to attend. Some athletes register with both the NAIA and the NCAA.

Students and Parents need to review all the rules and guidelines specific for their student athlete when they register. Please pay special atten-tion to course and GPA requirements specific to each level of athletic participation.

COLD & FLU SEASON IS ARRIVING Please take the following steps to reduce the spread of any communicable disease:

Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others.

Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues.

Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, getting adequate rest and exercise.

The symptoms of H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include:

Fever greater than 100 degrees

Body aches

Coughing

Sore throat

Respiratory congestion

In some cases, diarrhea and vomiting. Most important message about H1N1: treat H1N1 as you would any other communicable disease. If you run a fever of 100 or more stay at home and don’t return until you are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.

SPRING MUSICAL AUDITIONS WILL BE THE WEEK OF DEC. 5. It’s that time of year again! The Bishop Ward Theatre Department is gearing up for another musical season, this time with the hilarious script by Robert Gattie and Alan Haehnel (the playwright responsible for our Fall play, “Testing, Testing”) entitled “Homework Eats Dog: The Musical.” “For science teacher Douglas Kobekeanski, there's nothing more delicious than the "Hour of Desperation," that magical time before his immensely important, grade-devastating assignment is due. Each year, his students trot out a litany of outrageous excuses, including the greatest of them all: my homework ate my dog. All the delightful dark humor of the original short play is given hilarious new life in this musical version.” Auditions for this knee-slapper will take place the week of December 5th, 2016 and the cast list will be posted by Friday, December 9th. The show itself will take place March 9th, 10th, and 11th. This show is huge and will take a lot of outside effort from parent volunteers. If there is anyone that is willing to help us with the set-building process, costumes, or props, please email me at [email protected]. We will be in des-perate need of science-related props of all kinds as well as parent volunteers who are willing to sew costumes.

Thank you all so much for your continued support of the Bishop Ward Theater and we can’t wait to see you in the spring.

An Advent Reflection From: “Take Time to Be Aware” by Fr. Edward Hays, A Pilgrim’s Almanac, pg. 196

“Take time to be aware that in the very midst of our busy preparations for the celebration of Christ’s birth in ancient Bethlehem,

Christ is reborn in the Bethlehems of our homes and daily lives. Take time, slow down, be still, be awake to the Divine Mystery that looks

so common and so ordinary, yet is wondrously present.”

We hope you & your families have a wonderful, relaxing, safe, and blessed Advent and Christmas, and a happy & healthy New Year!
