Seasonal Greetings friends and neighboursAt this time of year I always find myself thinking, ‘blinking heck Barbara there’s a lot to pigging do!’
As you know I don’t drive - I am ergonomically correct - which means a lot of carrying of heavily laden *bags for life to and from the High Street.
Struggling home after one particularly hardcore trip back from the shops (involving a big tin of Quality Street, a ton of sprouts, five turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree) I had a moment of clarity - one of those road to Damascus moments when the blinkers drop suddenly off your eyes and you can see clearly - like the moment you realise that you are a Lark Rise girl and you will never get to Candleford!
This particular moment of revelation - of the penny dropping - came as I put the key in the front door - and it opened to reveal Ken sat on the settee watching a John Wayne cowboy film. As I struggled past with him with all the bags, doves, pear tree and partridge this song came to me.
If you know the tune join in.
£450 is her average spend You can see her in the post office Weighing presents to send The female of the species doesMore at Christmas than the male.Shop Shop Wrapping Wrapping
Shop Shop Wrapping She shouts herself hoarse He’s watching ‘pointless’ of courseThe female of the species Does more at Christmas than the male.
That’s how it is with Ken anyway...
Enjoy the chance to see friends and family and being sociable. Keep it local kids xxx
Happy New 2015!!!!!
keep laughing Your Pal, Barbara Nice x*I’ve got about 16 bags for life - which means I should live until I’m about 1,120 - this could be a problem as I’ve got no proper pension!
You can see Barbara Nice in all her glory this Christmas at mac Birmingham: An Evening of Comedy, 9 December Barbara Nice’s Christmas Cracker, 2 & 13 December www.macarts.co.uk

Interpreting LandscapePop down to Harborne art gallery and have a peek at this exhibition which explores British landscapes and seeks to interpret the emotion within them.
The fluidity of shape and form, along with the subtle colours and textures of the British landscape are the inspiration for this solo exhibition by the young British ceramicist Emily-Kriste Wilcox at the Harborne Art Gallery until 31 January 2015.
Interpreting Landscape reveals the emotional and technical intimacy between observation and expression, in paint and ceramics; an intimacy that finds its highest expression in the description of her work as 'painting in clay.’
Emily-Kriste is best known as a passionate ceramicist with a 'fresh and creative approach to the art of making pots' (Freda Wade, co-founder of Pot Easel). Her distinctive ceramic vessels - each individually handcrafted and unique in decorative finish - explore the dynamics of space, surface decoration, colour and texture, increasingly referencing the interplay of form, texture, colour and light of the landscape, sea and sky.
Emily-Kriste is a professional ceramicist. She graduated from Bath Spa (first class) in
2005 and has exhibited widely in galleries and exhibitions in the UK. Her work is held in personal collections in the UK, Europe and the US. She held her first solo show in 2012, in which year she was also awarded the Craft & Design Silver Award (Ceramics). Her work has appeared in many impressive publications, including most recently Australian online magazine, Zoneone Arts in April 2014… watch this space!

How healthy would your business look if all your customers paid on time?Do you shudder at the thought of expenses like wages and VAT?Do you want to get customers to pay more promptly without upsetting them? What if we were to tell you all this can be achieved without costing the earth or making a long term financial commitment?
The ladies at UK Central Credit Management offer a service that not only brings in what’s owed to you more quickly, but also helps you evaluate your processes to avoid scary financial situations in the future.
Small businesses are the worst for giving credit but not chasing their own money. They are too busy doing a great job for their customers and often embarrassed to chase up payments. But the sad truth is, waiting in vain for these payments to come through is bankrupting businesses.
These charming ladies are no stuffed suits, and have an astonishing success rate, which we at Swan Publishing have seen first hand (within one week!). They will manage invoices, statements going out, cash coming in and resolve queries quickly to get the results you need. And their friendly manner makes you proud to call them a part of your team. They operate as an extension of your business providing a back
office function to make sure the money you have worked hard for finds its way to you. Fast.
It can feel uncomfortable when money is owed to you and you can become emotionally involved. You may even avoid certain people or places because you feel the relationship with some customers has turned sour. But with this service those valuable connections are protected.
Did you know? According to research by Sage and BACS the average amount owed to UK SMEs at any one time has increased from £11,000 in 2013 to an eye watering £36,000 this year.
Don't be a statistic!
As the saying goes, talk costs nothing - so what have you got to lose by giving UK Central Credit Management a call? And you can thank us later!

Do you have any employees? If you do then you know it is a big responsibility and there are a whole host of rules and regulations you need to be aware of or you can get into serious trouble.
Getting their pay right is probably at the very top of their list of priorities and that is where help from someone like Maggie Willetts from MHA Bloomer Heaven can be a godsend.
“One of the most satisfying things about anyone’s employment is to receive a salary payment that is correctly calculated and paid promptly. Most employees never think twice about how the tax, National Insurance, Pensions and so on have been calculated but they do know how much money they expect to take home, so it’s particularly frustrating for them when things go wrong,” she said.
“It is often difficult for employers to explain things and this can cause bad feelings between staff and employers”
“Many employers rely on their accounts staff to calculate and understand the payroll operation and they, in turn, on a computer program. The problem is that as payroll gets more and more complicated with the changes in legislation, mistakes happen that may go unnoticed because of lack of experience and knowledge”.
“Ever-changing, complex legislation surrounding payroll makes it more and more
challenging and keeping staff up to date with all the changes can be costly as can mistakes”.
“I am a firm believer that if you have a water leak you should engage the services of a plumber, therefore, if you have employees you should not trust the payroll to anyone except a professional payroll clerk,” said Maggie.
Only the very large companies can employ dedicated payroll staff but there is a solution for companies of all sizes and that is to outsource, so if this has made you think about your payroll operation please call Maggie at MHA Bloomer Heaven on 0121 236 0465 for a free no obligation chat or quote for peace of mind payroll.

An independent school for girls aged 2½-18 years
The Edgbaston High School Ethos: Educate, Enrich, EngageFollowing outstanding examination results this summer, Edgbaston High School‘s leavers are now studying a broad range of competitive degree courses at some of the country’s most sought after universities, amongst them Birmingham, King’s College, London and Manchester. These achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils but also to the success of the EHS Ethos. Pastoral care as an integral part of every aspect of school life, working hand-in-hand with academic success, has long been considered a trademark of the School.
Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress, says: “EHS offers an enriched educational experience: pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work and benefit from a strong and distinctive system of pastoral care where emphasis is placed on nurturing each girl’s strengths and raising self-esteem.
“We wholeheartedly encourage our girls to be independent, to face new challenges and to acquire new skills. This can provide character-building opportunities for all, which in turn instils confidence and a sense of achievement.
”Combined with excellent teaching this unique approach offers our pupils a truly holistic education.”

How do I manage now I'm on my own? This is a question wills and probate solicitor Clare Martin from Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston is often asked when she is handling the affairs of someone who has just lost their spouse.
“Aside from the obvious emotional trauma of losing a life partner, there are also more practical issues that become of great concern to the surviving partner,” she says.
“You often find that the practical day to day paperwork of home management falls to one or other partner, rarely is it equally shared. And if the first to go is the one who takes care of all things financial then the surviving partner has to learn a whole new skill set.
“As their solicitor I am there to handle the administration of the will, but my role has grown to be much more supportive, particularly when the executor of the will is also the sole beneficiary. Together with the client I help them to build a team of professionals to support them going forwards.
“I see my role as empowering them to let them know that they can manage, to help them to
rebuild their life and gain confidence through a difficult time. We help take away the stress and burden of paperwork so that the grieving person can focus on their emotional healing,” she says.
One of the things Clare can help with on the legal side is variations to the will. Clients generally take advantage of deeds of variation to redirect inheritance for family or tax reasons but these must be signed within two years of death to achieve favourable tax consequences.
Clare adds: “As well as helping in a practical capacity we also take active steps to remember the person who has died. Every year we hold a tree of light service here at Woodbourne to remember lost loved ones, and we have a snowdrop memorial garden that people can visit any time.”
For any queries regarding wills, probate, trusts or lasting powers of attorney please contact Clare Martin on 0121 693 2222.

Greatness in our midstCarters of Moseley has been named the Good Food Guide ‘Readers’ Restaurant of the Year.’
It’s a national accolade which will undoubtedly bring more diners to St Mary’s Row, but for co-founder Holly Jackson it’s about so much more than bolstering business.
“It’s particularly special because this award is voted for by our customers, and we were told that it wasn’t only the quantity, but the quality of the comments that were submitted. It’s amazing that people went out of their way to write in and say such nice things about us.”
Their loyal customer base is testament to the restaurant’s strong local roots. Chefs Brad (Holly’s fiance) and Peter (Holly’s brother) both trained at the College of Food (since renamed University College Birmingham). Holly first fell in love with the area when she got to know it through her dad, who worked as a painter and decorator around Mosley and Kings Heath.
“I love the music scene, the vibrancy, the independent shops. I also love the mix of people - we get all sorts in the restaurant, from lawyers and judges to students and hippies.”
They also make a point of using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. Their bread flour comes from Sarehole Mill, their honey from hives in Mosley Park and Brad regularly goes foraging locally for wild ingredients. Brad and Holly even live above the restaurant and still work every shift that they’ve been open. “It makes it much easier to monitor the quality of what we do, when you see every dish that goes out and speak to every customer.”
The awards now proudly on display in the restaurant are proof that this personal touch is definitely paying off.

development programme which supports the progression of talented young jazz musicians from first access through to early career level.
This project has been made possible thanks to a legacy donation by the late jazz photographer Russ Escritt to support the development of young Birmingham-based jazz musicians.
The scheme will support three young musicians a year for the next three years providing them with a tailored musical development programme. It will run alongside the THSH Fellowship scheme which is funded by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and supports musicians in the early to mid-career stage, aged between 21 and 35.
In the not-too-distant future THSH hope to present much more city-grown talent at venues like the Hare & Hounds.
Find out more about our work at www.thsh.co.uk/jazzlines
Did you know Town Hall & Symphony Hall (THSH) presents regular gigs at the Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath?
Jazzlines, THSH’s dynamic programme of contemporary jazz and talent development work, presents around 100 concerts a year; it features commissions by British jazz musicians alongside established international artists, a free entry programme at Symphony Hall Café Bar, Bramall Music Building foyer and the Jam House, a concert series at the CBSO Centre and a club series… at the Hare & Hounds.
The York Road venue offers an ideal setting in which to present diverse and cutting edge jazz programming. Recent artists who have performed there include Takuya Kuroda, Partisans and Polar Bear.
Running parallel to this series, back in the city centre THSH delivers a programme of pioneering, creative music composed by exciting British jazz talent; supporting emerging and established talent is a core part of the programme.
This includes Future Fellows, a new scheme for young people who are in school years 7-12. It is a new part of a growing talent

Putting On The RitzOn 26th March 2013 fire ripped through Cash Converters on York Road in Kings Heath, destroying a building that, in its heyday as the Ritz Ballroom, played host to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, the Who, and many other world famous bands.
For over eighteen months the burnt out shell has stood neglected, nothing but charred and twisted remains, now partially hidden by colourful murals telling the history of the building. But out of the ashes a phoenix is finally beginning to rise. Plans are underway to turn the historical site into a community arts centre, celebrating and commemorating Kings Heath’s illustrious music history, as well as providing a venue to nurture the stars of the future.
Bob Prew is one of the chief figures in pushing the project forward. “Everybody who became anything in the 1960s played here, on this little back street in Kings Heath,” he says. “It would be great to be able to mark its significance. But it’s also important to look to the future. As well as a museum of pop history, we also want to include a performance space for music, comedy and theatre. A place to show films. Perhaps even
rehearsal and recording facilities. It will take a lot of money and hard work, but I genuinely believe this project has the potential to draw people to the area in the same way that the Cavern Club draws people to Liverpool.”
The development is still very much in the initial stages. A project committee has been set up and is appealing to the community for support, particularly from people with a background in fund raising, marketing and the arts. Over five hundred local residents have already agreed to pledge £10 a year to support the scheme.

Award Winning ConvenienceHardev Singh Ruprai was just thirteen when he started working in his parents’ shop. He learnt every aspect of the business from the ground up and it’s why winning the title of ‘Convenience Retailer of the Year’ means so much to him and his family.
“Over the last thirty six years there have been good days and bad days, we’ve been open through sun and snow and everything in between. I’m so proud that what my parents started and what we’ve achieved has been officially recognised. No one can ever take that away.”
After being nominated for the award by one of their suppliers, three judges from the English Asian Business Awards spent over an hour in the shop, talking to staff and customers, before awarding the title. What helped Ruprai Food and Wine stand out from the crowd was their wide range of alcohol, their charity work and their contribution to the local area.
“Our aim is to be a place where people can do a quick shop for the essentials. All our staff live locally, and we want to give people what they need, to be here for the community. This award
tells us we must be doing something right.”
But while Ruprai is very much a traditional family business, Hardev is determined to continually improve and develop the shop. Four years ago they undertook a massive refit, adding more chillers and upgrading the technology. It was a big risk, but their loyal customers stuck with them through the disruption.
“There are people who’ve been coming here since the shop first opened. We’ve seen generation after generation coming through, people who first came in as kids are now coming in with their own children. I just want to say a massive thank you to all our customers and all our staff, past and present. This award is for them.”

New Year New YouEvery year, on 1st January, millions of us pledge to put the festive indulgences behind us and change our lives for the better. Yet every year nearly 80 per cent of us fail to stick to our New Year’s resolutions. Why?
Most people aim too high, pledging to eat healthier, get more exercise, stop smoking. But these laudable goals are long term commitments that require fundamental lifestyle changes that are hard to maintain once the New Year hangover has dissipated.
Perhaps the answer is to choose something that requires a one-off burst of energy. For example, book all those appointments you’ve been putting off - visit your GP for a check up; have the nurse take your weight, height and blood pressure; research how to properly self-examine your breasts or testicles; go to the optician sight and hearing tests. And while you’re there, make a follow-up appointment. Get all that done in January and you can sit back smugly for the rest of the year, mission accomplished.
Another approach is to make a New Year’s resolution to try something new every month. With the huge range of places to eat out in Moseley and Kings Heath, it’s easy to regularly sample a different cuisine or exotic dish. Perhaps you could explore your creative side at one of the craft workshops run by People in Kings Heath, Guthrie & Ghani in Moseley or the Victorian Tea Rooms in Kings Heath Park. Maybe it’s time to try out the crazy golf course in Cannon Hill Park, or sample a yoga class at the Buddhist Centre in Moseley, or simply go for a stroll along the canal.
This January don’t set yourself up to fail - make a New Year’s resolution that you can definitely achieve. Then maybe all those ongoing diet and lifestyle changes will also be a little easier to maintain.

New Kids on the BlockIt’s been a little while since My Moseley and Kings Heath took a look at what’s new in our neigh-bourhood, and there are a number of independent businesses that are definitely worth a visit.
One shop hoping to be a perfect fit is children’s shoe shop Cooshoo, on York Road in Kings Heath. Husband and wife team Anna and Michael Swift were so frustrated by the sparsity of good quality, well-fitted kids’ shoes that were also cool and different, that they decided to open their own shop. They’ve proved they were right about the gap in the market with customers coming from all across the West Midlands to pick up funky European brands, as well as a variety of locally made crafts and accessories.
Once you’ve got your kids’ feet sorted, then it’s a short walk over the High Street to Nikkidees Ge-lato on Institute Road for a tasty treat. There’s a dizzying array of colourful delights, all made fresh on the premises every day. From deeply decadent ice creams such as Butter Caramel or Cheese Cake, to fat-free, dairy free fruity sorbets for a more healthy option. Owners Darren Davy and Ni-coya Richards can also whip up a quick crepe or waffle, and maybe tempt you with a macaroon or cupcake. And if that wasn’t enough, they’re open until 11pm at the weekend.
If you’re looking for more mature down time then leave the kids at home and head to Moseley Vil-lage, where popular pub The Cross has transformed into The Dark Horse. New owner Keith Mars-den knows Moseley well, having run the Prince of Wales for the last seven and a half years. He felt there was a shortage of casual dining venues for the after-work crowd, and aims to attract a ma-ture and discerning clientele with a combination of relaxed bar, low key dining and quality live mu-sic. Sounds like the perfect antidote to Christmas shopping to me!

Here Comes the BrideNext February the Crescent Theatre will stage the world premiere of a brand new, very English opera, written by Kings Heath residents Alexandra Taylor and Michael Wolters.
The plot of ‘Ava’s Wedding - An English Tragedy’ revolves around that well known English inability to say what you really mean. Each of the characters is involved in a misunderstanding which, if everyone told the truth, could disappear. But because of politeness, shame or duty, nobody speaks up and the problems escalate, culminating in a mass of fights, breakdowns, suicides and murders.
Not only does it feature characters and situations that everyone can relate to, but it is also written in English, and the music takes inspiration from familiar English musical styles, from Renaissance to 1980s new wave and beyond.
“The orchestration is quite unusual,” explains composer Michael, who is also Deputy Head of Composition at the illustrious Birmingham Conservatoire. “It’s a traditional orchestra with a twist, including five flutes, a saxophone quartet and an electric guitar.”
While Michael took on the gargantuan task of writing two and a half hours of music for twenty five voices, a choir and a thirty-piece orchestra, freelance writer Alexandra, who put the words into the characters’ mouths, also had her work cut out.
“On one hand the structure was sitting there waiting,” she says. “The build up to a wedding always includes a proposal, dress fittings, hen and stag parties and a reception. But wrestling over twenty characters and ten interconnected stories into that structure involved a lot of creative thinking - and different coloured post it notes! I can’t wait to see all the drama brought to life on stage.”

Go green with Treecycling scheme
All I want for Christmas is a good night's sleep!
We all love the smell and appearance of a real Christmas tree but as the pine needles drop and our floor turns green, disposing of it can be a bit of a pain.
An astonishing statistic is that in around 65,000 divorces in Britain, snoring and associated sleep deprivation were cited as the cause.
But do not despair; Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has the solution with its exciting Treecycling scheme. On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th January an army of volunteers will be ready to collect discarded Christmas trees for recycling. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, so they are easily reused or
This saddens me because it can be so easily prevented with the intervention of a dentist. A specially designed appliance that you wear at night maintains an open, unobstructed airway, meaning snoring could become a distant memory.
Imagine a sport’s mouth guard, or orthodontic retainer, and you can perhaps start to picture how easy and comfortable it is to wear. It helps by repositioning the lower jaw, stabilising the tongue, and helping to keep the airway open to ensure an adequate air intake.
Snoring causes untold misery, and deep unhappiness (and it’s not even done on purpose!). So, if you agree with me that uninterrupted sleep is a priority, speak to your dentist today, and start
recycled - much better for the environment.
In return for a minimum suggested donation of £10, trees will be collected by the Hospice’s corporate volunteers and taken to Birmingham City Council’s household recycling centres, where they will be turned into compost. By signing up to the scheme people will be helping the Hospice care for people with terminal illnesses within their local communities.

Denture Care Top TipsTips to prolong the life of your dentures, from Clinical Dental Technician Robert James of Vital Ceramics.
1. Develop a care regime - Clean your dentures every evening. Once removed, massage gums with a soft toothbrush.
2. Soak dentures overnight - When you aren’t wearing your dentures, keep them moist. Use a denture cleaning solution or water to soak them overnight.
3. Have regular dental check-ups - At least once a year.
4. Be positive - New dentures, for most wearers, are not a negative experience. Quality dentures can significantly improve your smile, speech, facial appearance and self-confidence.
5. Don’t put up with ill-fitting dentures - Ideally replace dentures every 4-5 years. Consider a spare set.
