RCOH Inspectors Celebrate 2,013 Accident Free DaysMore than 30 Non-Nuclear Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) Inspectors in Department X67 were recognized on Nov. 20 for going 2,013 days without a recordable accident. The crew was treated to a barbecue luncheon for their accomplishment.

“Our crew works very closely together and always looks out for one another,” said Jay Harvey, structural inspector. “Teamwork is what has allowed us to go this long without an accident. We never leave the office or job site without the whole crew and if we see something wrong, we alert management and don’t begin working until the area has been fixed.”

Test Inspection Supervisor Michael Mugler is proud of the crew. “This milestone has been accomplished by the whole team,” said Mugler. “And, what better time to celebrate 2,013 accident free days than the year 2013? Being told to be safe doesn’t mean anything, until you decide that you want to be safe.”

On Dec. 9, the PCU Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Ship’s Store will kick off its first sale of CVN 78 emblematic merchandise on Pier 3. The sale will be held from 2-5 p.m. for all Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) employees.

All transactions will be CASH ONLY. NNS employees are advised that they should visit the tent sale on their personal time, and not while on the clock. Sale times are scheduled to allow employees time to visit the tent either before or after their shift.

This year is no different, you’re right on track to exceeding last year’s numbers. I want to thank you for your hard work, team work and for exceeding expectations.”

Richard Bailey (O53) believes the team’s communications skills have been a large contributing factor to the team’s overall successes. “We communicate really well,” said Bailey. “Each of us have radios that are always turned on so that we can keep each other informed of our location, job status and of any potential safety hazards that we might run into.”

Workers’ Compensation Office to Relocate in JanuaryThe Workers’ Compensation Office is relocating to 2600 Washington Avenue, which is located on the corner of 26th Street and Washington Avenue in Newport News. The office will be housed on the 7th floor, the same floor as the Leave of Absence and Benefits Departments. The close proximity of the three Newport News Shipbuilding departments will provide better coordination of services for employees. Short-term parking for visitors will be available on Washington Ave. in front of the building.

“The synergy obtained from having these three services together will make us more efficient and streamline our processes to provide better service,” said Cindi Wolfe, manager of Workers’ Compensation. “This move solidifies our mission, which is to ensure injured employees are provided appropriate and timely medical care and benefits.”

The move will take place Jan. 2-7. Employees requiring assistance during this period can contact their case manager by phone or call the Workers’ Compensation Office’s main number at 380-2647, however, the office will be closed to walk-in customers.

Propeller Club Presents Check to the Food BankOn Nov. 21, Propeller Club representatives presented a $4,000 check to the Food Bank of the Virginia Peninsula. The check was from net proceeds from the club’s annual golf tournament that was held in August.

ASSA Supports Local Veterans On Nov. 10, The Apprentice School Students Association (ASSA) held their second annual Veterans Day Golf Classic at Cypress Creek Golf Club. Thirty-six teams, each with four players, participated in this year’s tournament. ASSA’s goal was to raise $3,000 for the VA Hospital in Hampton. ASSA exceeded the goal and was able to present a check for $5,000 to the hospital.

“Veterans looked out for so many and now it’s time to give back to them,” said Kevin Doyle, ASSA president. “ASSA hopes to continue the tradition of this tournament and give back to veterans for many years to come.”

ASSA members present a $5,000 check to a VA Hospital representative on Nov. 10. Funds were raised during the organization’s annual Veterans Day Golf Classic.

Career Pathways Hosts Students and TeachersCareer Pathways hosted 41 high school students and five teachers from Heritage High School’s Governor’s STEM Academy, as a part of their STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) program. The students and teachers spent 15 hours over three days exploring different STEM careers at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS).

Mentors from Modeling and Simulation, Computer Systems Technology and Engineering Departments, escorted students through their departments and other areas of the shipyard to give them a hands-on experience of what it is like to work at NNS.

Josh Stachura (X15), a Heritage High School graduate who participated in the Job Shadowing program two years ago and is now an apprentice, spoke to the students on their first day. Mentor Matt Thomas (E86) said, “The job shadowing experience benefits the students by providing a chance to explore the

multiple career paths offered at NNS. This program also has been a great benefit for each of the NNS mentors by improving their social skills, networking, and leadership skills that can be used to enhance their own career at NNS.” Photo by John Whalen

Ford Christening Items Available in Bldg. 520The Communications Division has invitations, programs, souvenir tickets, and posters highlighting the Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Christening available for shipbuilders. Items can picked up outside of the Communications Office located on the first floor of Bldg. 520. All items will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Communications urges shipbuilders to be considerate and only take one of each per shipbuilder.

Changes to NNS Park-and-Ride Shuttle ServiceAfter hearing your feedback on the new shuttle services and reviewing parking space utilization data, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is making changes to the Park-and-Ride service. Effective Dec. 2, the following changes are being made to the internal and external shuttles for the North, South and Mid yards.

New Mid Yard Shuttle ServicesShipbuilders working in the Mid Yard will now be able to ride either the internal shuttle loading at the NY gate that stops at Dry Dock 11, MOF, Bldg. 86 and Pier 3 or ride the external Hidens shuttle that stops at 44th St. and 50th St.

NOTE: Travel time from the NY or Hidens parking lots varies and may take 25-30 minutes. All riders should allow for extra travel time to reach their job site. All shuttles operate Monday thru Friday (except NNS-observed holidays). The Holiday Shutdown schedule will be published the week of Dec. 16. Ridership on NNS shuttles will continue to be monitored and changes made as warranted.

North Hidens External Shuttle ChangesThe external Park-and-Ride Shuttle that picks up riders at North Hidens (63rd St.) will no longer provide transportation to the North Yard parking lot. The shuttle will continue to drop off riders at 50th St. A NEW stop between 43rd and 44th St. on Washington Avenue has been added to this shuttle. Shuttles servicing the North Hidens parking lot will operate from 5-8 a.m. and from 2-5 p.m.

Internal Shuttle Stops Now Include MOF and Bldg. 86From 5-8 a.m., in addition to the existing stops at Dry Dock 11 and Pier 3, the internal shuttle departing from the North Yard (NY) gate will stop at the southeast corner of the Modular Outfitting Building (MOF) and near The Huntington Memorial Rock (south of Bldg. 86) to accommodate employees who work in the Mid Yard. Three buses will be added to support the additional rider demand inside the Yard.

Buses will continue to run from Dry Dock 11 and Pier 3 to the NY beginning at 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., buses will be stationed at Pier 3, the MOF, Dry Dock 11 and Bldg. 86 to support 3:40 p.m. departures to the NY. After the initial departures, buses will stop at all four locations until 6:30 p.m.

How to Submit a Classified AdAds can be submitted online at nns.huntingtoningalls.com/currents or a hard copy can be mailed via Yardmail to ATTN: Classifieds, Dept. O29, Bldg. 520-1. The deadline to submit ads is Thursday at 4 p.m.

Classified Ad PolicyClassified ads are published free of charge for active employees of Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). Due to the high volume of Classified ads received each week, the Communications department would like to remind all shipbuilders of NNS’ Classified ad policy.

Ads will not be accepted by phone or email. Ads will not be accepted for third-parties or businesses. Ads containing .com website URLs, real estate MLS numbers, or for any types of weapons will not be accepted. To be published, the ad form must include the employee’s name, department number and a non-work phone number. All ads will expire seven days from the original posting date. Ads must be resubmitted by employee each week.

NNS Communications may limit the number of submissions per employee and reserves the right to edit or reject any submission. Employees who are found to have misrepresented themselves or any items advertised will be prohibited from publishing ads in the future. Employees submitting ads understand that the Classifieds are published for an external audience and may be seen by non-employees.
