Issue #49- Dec. 10/09HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

You don’t have to spend extravagantly on Christmas decorations. By making your own, you will be putting your personality in your Christmas decorating.

People have all different kinds of ideas about decorating their home for Christmas. Inside your home, Christmas decorations help to give your home that Christmas spirit that people crave during the holiday season. It is an important part of your celebration and can help your home feel more inviting during the holidays. There are many different ways to decorate your home, but making your own Christmas decorations with your family can help make the time together more special and can give a great sense of pride and ownership. There are many different ideas that you can use to help with your interior Christmas decorating desires.

You can make your home into a Christmas masterpiece with some simple interior Christmas decorations.

• One cute idea is to make a display of festive seasonal dolls or bears. You can add a small Christmas tree with little presents. This is a great way to get your children involved. It is important to let them choose the items so that you don’t choose one of their security objects, because you don’t want to have to take apart your display to rescue one of their favorites.

• Another idea to help give your home that Christmas spirit is to use Christmas ribbon to tie bows all over your home. You can put them

anywhere you can tie them, from your stair rails to your curtains.

• Hanging stockings throughout your home is a wonderful way to add that festive feel in your home.

• If you are looking for an activity to do with your children, then you may want to consider taking a white table cloth and painting it with fabric paint. This is a great way to add your children’s personality to your room. Just be sure that you explain that painting on the tablecloth is a one time thing.

• Decorate your houseplants with small ornaments to help make them more Christmasy. If you are out of Christmas ornaments, use your Christmas cookie cutters with a little ribbon. You can’t go wrong. If it appeals to you, then you can use it.

• Setting Christmas books out on your table is a great decoration and you can gain knowledge. You can even create a game around the trivia that you find inside of the books.

You don’t have to spend lots of money on Christmas decorations. You can create your own with just a little effort and a few ideas much like these.

Personally, I find the winter holidays to be the most special time of the year. My mother always made this holiday a wonderful one as she used to decorate the house in all things Christmas. I especially liked her Christmas decorating ideas. Everything was made with such loving care. There is a fine line between festive and flashy and through the years I have always tried to give my best not to cross it.

Stylish and smart Christmas decorating ideas don’t have to be expensive or a difficult endeavour; you can use simple things to make your Christmas unforgettable. For instance, what do all of the large department store window displays have in common? They are all decorated using careful color coordination. Take a cue from the professional

set designers that have created these breathtaking holiday displays and use color coordination to create a color coordinated holiday home décor scheme that is fit to impress every guest that walks through the door.

Using a few simple tips and tricks will help you to attractively decorate your home for the holidays. By all indications, blue will be a hot color for Christmas 2009. We’ve seen blues the past couple of years for the holiday season. Colors such as navy, aqua, silver blue and baby blue will remain popular choices this year as well. Consider using blue and silver Christmas tree decorations instead of placing random Christmas ornaments on the tree. Don’t limit yourself to typical ornaments – place colorful jesters or beautiful large festive florals in your tree for even more impact. Whatever your color scheme is, incorporate it into the rest of the holiday décor by choosing throw pillows, area rugs, candles and figurines in those colors. Simplifying the overall holiday color scheme will create a chic and glamorous Christmas décor scheme.

When it comes to fireplaces – there are so many options to experiment with decorating. Wreaths, candlesticks, stockings are typical Christmas features. Accent lighting in greenery is always a great way to really warm up the area and make is inviting for your guests. For those of you do not have a fireplace, don’t be discouraged from hanging traditional Christmas décor like stockings and mantle decorating. While it will require a bit of ingenuity and informality, these Christmas decorating traditions can be carried out. Consider hanging Christmas stockings from built-in bookshelves or a built-in buffet. Having a mantle in your living room isn’t necessary in order to inject some Christmas spirit – you may choose to decorate your entertainment center by using Christmas ornament garland. While these ideas won’t replace a traditional fireplace, they make festive stand-ins to bring Christmas spirit into the room.

Some of my favorite festive items to decorate with include using fresh wreaths and boughs both inside and out. The scent carries throughout the home, reminding me of the upcoming season. To add color and interest to other areas

of your room, place ornamental Christmas balls on tables in clear glass containers, or on mantles. And don’t forget pine cones! Yes, the simplest and least expensive decoration! They are great when mixed with greenery on a mantle or for a centerpiece on your dining room table. They also look great placed in a basket along with some vintage Christmas books. Very small pine cones tied with a ribbon can be used to attach gift cards to presents for a personalized touch.

Don’t forget about creating ambience with lighting! Many department stores sell battery-operated candles especially for this holiday season and look radiant in and around your home – a much safer alternative than real candles.

Christmas decorations are one inseparable part of the Christmas holidays, without which Christmas would lose all its color, spirit, warmth and charm. And it’s also great to get together the entire family or the whole gang of friends for a Christmas decorating party and watch the magic of Christmas unfold before you.

The merriest time of the year is on its way - deck the halls with wonderful Christmas decorations and share the warmth and joy of the season with all far and near. Enjoy everything this wonderful season has to offer!

(NC)—Today’s bath has been redefined as home spa, the one place in a home where you can retreat to for a reviving pick-me-up. So, when it comes time to give this room a pampering of its own, consider paint and the power of colour. It’s a quick, easy and economical way to invigorate the space.

“A splash of paint can be the perfect tonic for toning up a tired bathroom,” suggested Benjamin Moore colour expert Sharon Grech. “Whether it’s just a fresh coat of existing colours or a whole new palette, budget-conscious consumers will appreciate the affordability.”

In today’s volatile housing market, a bath makeover remains a home renovation that still is a wise investment, increasing a home’s value. Often, just a simple paint job can be so transformational that it also can achieve comparable payoffs whether your plans are to stay put or re-sell.

When it comes to bathroom paint, conventional wisdom has always dictated that only a high-gloss finish will do, to avoid telltale water spots and streaks from showing. Now, according to Grech, Benjamin Moore has developed Aura Bath & Spa a matte

finish paint that locks out moisture. “It is exceptionally eco-friendly, low-VOC premium performance paint that retains the colour integrity regardless the steamiest conditions and offers a terrific option for consumers.” The new formulation is available in 1,800-plus colours.

With a choice of colours that extensive, deciding which ones to use can be the biggest challenge. “The cool palette of blues, greens and watery hues is, of course, a popular choice for creating a calming and serene setting,” she advised. “Think about using the warmer end of the spectrum—yellows, oranges and pinks—if you want a room that wakes up the senses and is more stimulating and lively.”

Now that it’s the holiday season everyone is busy thinking about his or her Christmas Trees. There are tricks and tips to help you create a unique look that fits in your home and adds sparkle to your holiday celebrations. Whether real or artificial, a little imagination can take that blank canvas and turn it into something really magical that will brighten your whole holiday season.

You can start by looking for ideas on the trees you see in public places like malls or hotel lobbies. These are great places to get ideas that you can easily bring to your own tree.

Here are some great tips for creating a beautiful tree

1.Your tree will stand in you room till the holiday season ends so it should have a visual impact. The space in your room will determine the size of the tree you can have. This is important to consider especially if you want to enhance your ornaments.

2. Decide on the overall look you like. The more branch tips your tree has, the more ornaments and decorations are needed.

If you want your tree to have an informal look, select a tree that has long needles and upswept branches. If you want something more formal, select a tree that has down swept branches and with short needles.

3. Pay attention to lighting. There is a general rule in deciding the number of lights for a tree — a one foot tree should have about 40-50 lights. The simplest thing to do is buy a pre-lit tree, no mess and easy storage. But if you do the lights yourself, hang them inside the tree, for a twinkling effect. Stringing the lights on the outer edges, over the tips of the branches won’t look right. Remember to keep the amount of light uniform, without and unfilled spaces.

4. Add garland. Whether you choose traditional garland or beaded garland, you can get a great look. If you want traditional, swag your garland from the top to the bottom, and also around the back of the tree. The swag of your garland will depend on the width of your tree. Twist the garland at the tip and it should be smaller as it reaches the top of the tree. Another style is to double swag your garland and form it into a spiral garland. Some prefer using ribbon that falls from the top of the tree down along to the bottom.

5. Use fillers. You must use fillers in order to give the tree an enchanting look. Some people don’t do this but it is a great way to give your tree a new look.

6. Choose a color scheme. Use a single color or two complimentary ones to give your tree a coordinated, decorator look. Try traditional choices such as red and gold, or something different like pink and white. Use ornaments of

these colors and keep the garland in the same color family as well.

7.Dare to be different. Decorate according to what you like, even if it isn’t the “traditional” way. Use your favorite hobby, ornaments collected on vacations, or old style bulbs to create a look that’s truly your own. This will create a unique, personal holiday expression that is sure to be a conversation starter.

8. Don’t forget the handmade ornaments. No matter what style you are trying to achieve, the hand made ornaments of your own childhood, or those of family members can be wonderful additions to any tree, and compliment any style.

9. Cover the base of your tree with a colorful tree skirt so that the gifts underneath will rest on a pretty background. This makes the packages look even more festive, and looks good after the presents are unwrapped too.

10. Top it off. Use a star, an angel or a large bow — what-ever suits your individual taste.

Hidden home-

energy wasters

(NC)—As fall comes to a close and the temperature drops, many homeowners realize how energy inefficient their house actually is. There are a few tell-tale signs: frigid air seeping in around the window frame; the cool touch of the outside walls; or, worst of all, the energy bill that spikes suddenly. In a year when many people are watching their wallets, what can homeowners do to save energy to save money?

According to The Home Depot Canadian Green Home Index, a bi-annual survey tracking consumers’ attitudes and behaviours toward greening their homes, the majority of Canadians want to be more environmentally responsible at home, but most aren’t overly confident in their abilities. But getting your home on the green path doesn’t have to be costly or difficult; in fact it’s easier than many people think.

“You don’t need to undertake a massive renovation to make your home greener and more energy efficient,” says Moss Brookfield, an associate at The Home Depot. “I regularly help customers find easy, affordable, D-I-Y green solutions – you don’t have to spend a fortune to get your energy costs down.”

Brookfield says that taking simple steps to tackle hidden home energy wasters can save you money overall. In other words, there’s coin to be had for being green. Here are three key areas where many people waste money and don’t even know it.

Don’t draft awayIt should come as no surprise to many that windows are the number one culprit of unnecessary heat and energy loss. But being energy efficient doesn’t mean having to purchase brand new windows for the entire house. While this is certainly ideal, it’s not the only option.

For less than $20, homeowners can purchase a weather-stripping kit at The Home Depot that will cover four large windows. Apply the double sided tape inside the window frame, stick the clear plastic film to the tape, and use a hot air blow drier to seal the windows. It’s that easy. And by sealing and insulating your home you can reduce home heating bills by seven to 20 per cent.

Get time on your sideWhen the heat’s on and no one’s home, you’re spending money on nothing. Save your heat, and spend your dollars when someone’s there to enjoy it.

The Home Depot sells programmable thermostats for less than $100. Once installed, set the thermostat to turn the heat off during the times of the day when the house is empty. For additional savings, program the thermostat to drop the temperature slightly during the night when everyone is asleep and cuddled under the blankets. Doing this will save you roughly $180 a year in energy costs – $80 more than you spent on the thermostat in the first place.

Cozy upAnother hidden home energy waster is the water heater. It constantly turns on to ensure the water in the tank is hot and ready for use. But as the hot water sits unused it cools, causing the heater to kick on to reheat it. This cycle happens over and over again, wasting energy every time.

By purchasing a hot water heater blanket – for less than $50 at The Home Depot – you can minimize the amount of heat lost through the tank’s walls, causing the heater to turn on less often. In fact, by covering your heater with a blanket, you can save up to 9 per cent on water heating costs.

For more information on energy efficient products and to learn more about energy efficient home projects you can visit The Home Depot nearest you or check out www.homedepot.ca.

Looking for a way to upgrade your home?Consider installing faux wood blinds. These blinds are classy, attractive and practical. Faux wood blinds are a great alternative to aluminum or natural wood blinds, and these blinds won’t dent like some aluminum blinds do. Faux wood is just as beautiful as natural wood, but less expensive and more durable.

What are faux wood blinds? Faux wood blinds, also called ‘faux woods,’ are made from high-quality PVC (a synthetic material) or from a composite of man-made materials and wood particles. Faux wood is more durable than natural wood, and giving it many benefits.

Benefits of Faux Wood Blinds:

- Easy to clean soap and water

- Moisture resistant

- Heat and warp resistant

- Stain resistant

With faux wood blinds, you do not have to worry about warping, cracking or splitting. If you live in a climate with high humidity, faux wood blinds are a great alternative to wood blinds. Faux wood blinds are well suited for bathrooms, kitchens, garages and areas with high moisture. Faux wood blinds are also less likely to break or scratch than wood blinds and they offer better insulation.

What should you look for in faux wood blinds? Below are a few things to con-sider when shopping in the market for faux wood blinds.

What to look for in Faux Wood Blinds:

- Style: Faux woods are available with three different kinds of surface finish--smooth, sandblasted and embossed.

- Fire-retardant: Make sure your blinds are fire-retardant. Most blinds are coated with a fire-retardant. However, some manufacturers offer blinds with a flame-retardant built right into the material without any coatings or coverings. Blinds with an inherent flame-retardant are the best option.

- Ease of installation: Some companies will install the blinds. If you choose to install them yourself, make sure the installation instructions are easy to read and follow.

- Warranty: Faux woods are known for their durability and ability to last many years. Look for a warranty in the faux wood blinds you select. A 25-year war-ranty is ideal.

- UV treated: Look for blinds that have been U.V. treated to protect the finish on the wood. This ensures that the original color of the blinds does not fade.

- Color: Faux wood blinds are available in a variety of shades, such as white, eggshell, cherry, oak and dark walnut. Look for a manufacturer who offers blinds in many colors. You should be able to find a shade that matches your home perfectly.

- Size: Many faux wood blinds are 2” or 2.5”. However, some manufacturers offer blinds that are up to 4.5 inches. If you have large windows, don’t feel like you need to settle for a size that you are not satisfied with.

You may also want to think about whether you would like to have traditional horizontal blinds or vertical blinds. You can also consider having tilt or locking pull rods.

Faux wood blinds can make the difference between a nice home and a gorgeous home. With the natural look of wood, faux woods effectively block sunlight from entering into a room and create a natural look. Best of all, they are less expensive than wood blinds and more durable. Faux woods are quickly replacing plastic and wood blinds for their aesthetic qualities and their practicality.

Where to Buy:

Interested in the look that faux wood can add to your home? You can start to research faux wood blinds online, or at a local window treatment retailer. If you don’t know of any local retailers, you can easily locate a window blind and shutter dealer online.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

When it comes to celebrating, food plays a critical and cross-cultural role. While it may consist of different cuisine depending on where you go, the meal around which families and friends gather unites the world on common ground. Different food comes to mean different things – a holiday meal, a weekly favorite, or a family recipe. But when it comes to celebrating sweetly – nothing beats a chocolate cake.

For chocolate cake connoisseurs the preferences are as unique as the people themselves – chocolate cake frosted with vanilla icing, chocolate icing, whip cream, you name it. Each family may have a special recipe handed down from generation to generation or a favorite bakery where the chocolate cake can’t be missed. Today’s ever-increasing popularity of chocolate cake would surely have been a surprise to those who first attempted its creation.

The making of cakes in a general nature began shortly after flour was discovered. The recipe then was much less sweet than it is today – displaying more of a bread-like quality. Initially, added to the flour, were milk and yeast; honey or dried fruit were added to sweeten the mixture. Today, eggs are most often used in place of yeast, and, of course, sugar has become our sweetener of choice. Making cake prior to the Industrial Revolution was a complicated and pricey process. But with the advent of mass produced ingredients, cake making became afford-able and easy for all levels of bakers.

Chocolate cake was first seen in the United States, the recipe for which was submitted to a Dallas, Texas newspaper in 1957. This particular recipe called for Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate which is how the chocolate cake received its name. The response to the printed recipe was immediate and astounding.

Today, the variations to this original recipe number into the thousands, with families adding their own special additions throughout the years. The advent of the boxed chocolate cake has given hope to elemen-tary bakers everywhere whose only responsibility is to add egg and oil and bake. Even still, the most delicious of chocolate cake is that which originates in the homes of our families.

And regardless of whether the recipe calls for icing, nuts, or a variety of other ingredients, the truth remains that chocolate cake is just as popular as ever, starring in birthday parties and celebrations throughout the world.

It may just be something you get out of the cappuccino machine in the office to kick-start your day, but there is a lot more to the origins and legends of coffee than you probably imagine. For a simple drink, the number of different beliefs relating to the benefits and origins of coffee are astonishing.

Many historians have now reached agreement that the coffee plant initially came from Ethiopia and was first encountered some two and a half thousand years ago. When the invigorating effects of the plant were realized, it began to be exported by voyagers to Arabia, where it was first given its modern name.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, times of world trade and discovery, the popularity of coffee spread rapidly. By the end of this period coffee could be found in across Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. The drink was very different to that which we find in modern cappuccino makers, being drunk strong and black, but it was widely accepted by every class of society.

The health benefits of coffee cited throughout this period, varied greatly. At various times it was believed to cure almost every known ill, often without much foundation in medical fact. However, various more recent studies have shown some benefits to the drink. It has been suggested that mammalian sperm can move quicker, and for longer periods in fluids containing coffee, supposedly fuelled by the caffeine. Another research project undertaken at Harvard indicated that diabetes can be eased by sensible coffee use. Further studies link coffee with diminution of liver cirrhosis and cutting down the effects of asthma.

The negative side of coffee in terms of health is that as a diuretic, coffee can increase urination and cause dehydration. The caffeine can also cause nerve deterioration if used over a long period of time. People can become dependent on the caffeine, and with-drawal symptoms can be severe.

Whether you choose to see coffee as a positive or negative beverage, its commercial value should not be underestimated. With an excess of four hundred billion cups of coffee being drunk each year, annual sales of coffee itself reach almost nine billion US dollars. This does not include the huge retail revenue to be gained in coffee grinders, espresso jugs, cappuccino makers and various other accessories. Coffee is big business, with new specialist outlets opening on worldwide high streets every day.

With the variety of blends, roasts and blends now available, along with speciality types such as flavored and iced coffees, the popularity of the drink seems set to last for the foreseeable future.

Dear Reena,I made a gingerbread house with my children and iced it with homemade buttercream icing. As we were putting the last few pieces of candy on the roof, the entire building came crashing down. Any idea what I did wrong? Love your books, Candace.

Hi Candace,Switch from buttercream to royal icing (buttercream is too soft). Allow the icing to harden before decorating the house. Another helpful tip is to ice the walls and roof in place and tie the building together with string until the icing dries. Remove the string and decorate as desired.

Dear Reena,I am getting ready to pack for a wonderful vacation, and my luggage is just so dirty! It is red and soft sided and the outside is dusty, dirty, stained, etc. I have tried vacuuming it, using a can of upholstery shampoo, and a damp cloth, all to no avail. It almost seems a waste of time, as when it gets off the plane it will just be filthy again. Any ideas? I love your column and have recommended it to my sisters. Moira

Dear Moira,Not sure what the fabric content or finish of your luggage is, if you have a polypropylene/cotton/or vinyl suitcase, sponge with a weak solution of laundry detergent, then dab with clean water. For soft plastic/vinyl bags: Dilute glass cleaner with water and wipe over the bags. Remove stains with laundry detergent in warm water, then rinse and dry. Or mix 4 tbsp. of baking soda in a cup of water. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and scrub it on the spot, being careful not to get the canvas too wet. Rinse. The easiest way to avoid luggage becoming dirty during transit is to secure it inside of a large clear recycling bag. Safe travels!

Hi Reena,I overcooked some rice in the microwave and the microwave filled with smoke. I cleaned it out with bleach, but there is still a strong smoke smell when I use the microwave. What can I do to get rid of this smell? Thanks, Karen

Dear Karen,Here are a few tricks to tackle this quandary: You can either: heat lemon juice or vinegar in the microwave until it boils over and then wipe out the interior. Or combine into a bowl; vanilla and water and heat until it boils over or another option is to combine lemon slices, vinegar, vanilla, dish soap and water in a bowl and heat. Alternatively combine and heat baking soda and water. If the odor persists, store coffee grounds in a bowl in the microwave to absorb lingering smells.

Dear Reena,I used your suggestion of vinegar to make my glasses sparkle. It worked wonderfully. However, the next week I added more vinegar, but this time I included all my silverware. The result is foggy glasses and forks/knives that have a coating on them. Obviously some chemical reaction has occurred with the stainless steel. Do you have any suggestions on how I can make my silverware look shiny again? Thanks, Lori

Hello Lori,It sounds as though the glasses are etched; this may or may not be reversible depending on how deeply the etching has set in. Either soak the glasses in hot vinegar for 20 mins. polish. Or run citric acid through the dishwasher with the glasses inside. Both of these options are effective solutions on etched glass. If the etching remains, it is permanent. In terms of the cutlery, pour washing soda and water into a pan lined with crumpled up aluminum foil, leave for 5-10 mins. rinse and polish.

Fabulous Feedback from Reader:Dear Reena,Thanks for the tip about toothpaste. I tried it on a tiled surface with dirty grout that has to this day resisted every cleaning solution; and it worked. I just spread the toothpaste and left it overnight, then scrubbed it with a stiff brush and rinsed.

I also use chestnuts to repel spiders but find that one dish in the house is enough. No need to spread them around. Pets and kids pick them up if they are within reach. Flora

Christmas Tips of the Week: Real trees need lots of water. A 6-7 foottree will absorb between 1 to 2 quarts of water each day.

Defrost the freezer to make space forChristmas food. When choosing recipes, make double now whilst you have the time and put half in the freezer for ease of use over the holidays.

When you are getting ready to take down your outdoor Christmas lights, stop by the lawn and garden department of your local store. Pick up a manual hose reel. Take your lights off the house and reel up the lights. Next year when you begin to put your lights on the house they will pull right off without being a knotted mess. Don’t forget to clean the windows and the front door/doorstep and sweep the leaves away to make a good impression when your guests arrive.

Dear Friends ;

For close to 100 years, residents of Melville and area have known that a lot of sport enthusiasts have come through our minor system or even played amateur or professional sports at different locations.

Now we are going to recognize them in our “Tourism Track of Success”. When the City of Melville built a new tourism centre in the north side of town, the management of the Tourism group decided to turn the dusty knoll into an attractive green area, with grass, trees and shrubs. Once established, this area appeared to be an ideal spot for picnic lunches and an extension of the City’s Silhouette Program.

Current, or former residents who probably hit the bit times on the National or International stage, could apply to have a silhouette honouring them on Melville’s “Track of Success”!

The first person honoured was Melville’s namesake “Charles Melville Hays”. While he was the head of the Grand Truck Railway, he chose Melville as a main crew turnaround point. Prior to completing the rail link across Canada, Hays went to England to raise money for his venture. Unfortunately, on his trip back across the ocean, he perished on the maiden voyage of the ill-fated Titanic.

The second silhouette belongs to a decorated First World War vet who studied Pharmacy and came to Melville to open up its first Drug Store. Our local Legion is named after Robert G. Comlie VC and they proudly display his silhouette on the “Track of Success”.

The silhouette pictured above is in recognition of Tim Cheveldae. Tim or “Chevy” as his friends refer to him, grew up and played his minor hockey in Melville, as well as one year of junior hockey with the Melville Millionaires. After a stint

with the Western Junior Hockey League, he had a distinguished career playing goalie in the NHL. Tim has continued to support Melville in most of their major fund raisers, never forgetting his roots.

Since our “Track of Success” has only just begun, we hope for many more heroes to be recognized in the coming years.

Not only is Melville known for its hockey heroes, but also baseball greats, Olympians, and other day-to-day people who excelled in their professions. While Melville moves forward with its new multi-million dollar communiplex, other things like a potash mill, new hotel, new businesses expand other businesses.

Don’t forget Melville on January 9, 2010 for the Olympic Torch Run.

Sincerely yours,

Micheal G. W. HalykManager, Tourism Melville, City of Melville Economic Development

Everyone enjoys the hustle and bustle of Christ-mas shopping and decorating. Children love to write letters to Santa and get a reply with an envelope stamped “North Pole”. But even more fascinating is the origins of many of our beloved Christmas traditions.

Exchanging Gifts: In ancient times holiday meals were shared with family, friends, and the poor. It was believed that in order to have a prosperous year, one must not be selfish for to hoard what they already had would guarantee that they would never be blessed with more. This is why we exchange gifts today.

Tree decorating: In olden times trees represented life triumphant over death. The Romans trimmed trees with trinkets, candles, and toys. The Druids tied polished apples and other offerings on tree branches. In Munich, even trees in cemeteries were decked with holly and mistletoe. Therefore, the evergreen tree, which decorates our homes today, has come to signify the ever living Christ.

Yule Logs: The ancient Druids and other cultures believed that the sparks from a burning log carried their wishes for a prosperous New Year to the gods. Today, fireplaces with burning logs recapture this ancient custom

with the belief that the firelight is symbolic of the light that came from Heaven when Christ was born.

Candles: In England, large candles were burned in conjunction with the yule log. In America today, the candles represent the Star of Bethlehem.

Holly: The Druids believed that holly was favored by the sun because it was always green. Today holly represents the ever living Christ. The white flowers, purity; the red berries, his blood; the leaves, his crown of thorns, and the bitter bark, his sorrow.

Mistletoe: Comes from a Norse legend. Freyja, a goddess, had arranged for her son to be protected from all earthly dangers. When he was shot with an arrow made from mistletoe, Freyja made mistletoe promise never to harm anyone ever again. So today, mistletoe is a symbol of peace and love. It’s winter blossoms bring promise of bounty for the coming spring.

Caroling: In Scandinavian custom, every Christmas, a party was given to the god Thor, represented by a goat. After much singing and dancing the goat would pretend to die and return to life. Today, carolers go from door to door singing and this represents the life of Christ.

Santa Claus: Santa actually started out as a version of Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. Sailors feared him because he could bring terrible storms or grant them safe journeys. Because he could save them from angry waters, he became known as “giver of all good things”. Due to the rise of Christianity, the old custom was changed to honor Nicholas of Myra, an Asian bishop. Nicholas wore red clothing, rode a white horse who could fly, and delivered gifts anonymously. Today, he is Santa with his flying reindeer!

Believe it or not, your car has affects from the cold too. Follow these tips to help you have a safer winter driving season.

First, and this goes for any time of year, change your oil at the manufacturers specified time, generally 3,000 miles. When you have an oil change most technicians also give your car a once over checking tires and belts and fluids. Remember, the oil is the life blood of your car.

Keep your gas tank full. This helps prevent possible moisture build up and also adds a bit of weight to your car which might help you in the snow. Don’t let your tank fall below one half.

Replace your wiper blades. There’s nothing worse than having no visibility, especially when you’re getting the spray of salt up on your windshield. Make sure you have plenty of washer fluid. Carry an extra

gallon with you. You go through it much faster in the winter weather due to salt spray.

Check the tire pressure on a regular basis. Make sure that

if you don’t have actual snow tires on different rims that the radials you have on your car have a good tread. Again, like the oil, keep an eye on the condition of your tires. A good rule is to have them rotated when you have your oil changed this will help prevent uneven wear. Make sure that you have a usable spare tire and you spare hasn’t dry rotted.

There are a few things that you should keep in your car for winter driving, an ice scraper and deicer (it’s a good thing to keep these things in the house too in case your car is covered with ice when you need to get into it), boots, gloves, a small shovel, sand and a flash light. Always have your cell phone fully charged and with you just in case.

Hopefully these tips will help you have a carefree winter driving experience.

Maintaining your car is important, no matter what time of year it is. Many people do not realize how much stress that the cold winter weather can put on your car’s drivetrain. There are three main areas cold weather affects your vehicle. Your lubrication system, battery, and cooling system are the areas most affected. In order to prepare for the cold winter, be sure and check these areas and make sure you aren’t going to be stranded in a snowstorm on the side of the road.

BatteryYes, your battery. Your battery operates at its best right above room temperature. As winter creeps in, the performance of your battery decreases, up to 90% in the worst weather. You want to test your battery and make sure it still has most of its rated cranking power. The older a battery gets, the less capacity it has to build up and sustain a charge, and the cold weather does not help.

Motor OilChecking your motor oil should be part of your gas fill-up. You should also regularly change your oil. Oil’s only purpose in your engine is to lubricate and cool moving parts, minimizing wear and tear. In cold weather, oil can get thick, so thick that it doesn’t circulate properly. This poor circulation can lead to added stress and damage for the internal parts of your engine, a reduction in power, and reduced gas mileage. Consider those factors when choosing which motor oil is best for you.

In extremely cold weather, the performance needed from your lubricant is only offered with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil offers protection from the dangers of the cold because it retains its ability to flow at temperatures as low as -70 degrees. The benefits are seen in the summertime as well, since it retains its viscosity in higher temperatures. In cold weather, your battery is already performing below capacity. Your thick oil working against the weak battery is an invitation for disaster.

Cooling SystemEvery driver should know what an important role their vehicle’s cooling system plays. Comprised of the radiator, thermostat, pump, the car’s heater, and a bunch of hoses, it keeps your car running at normal operating temperatures. Most people think that the cooling system’s only job is to keep the car from overheating. Not true. The cooling system also has the responsibility of getting the engine to normal operating temperatures as quickly as possible.

The cooling system is comprised of mostly water; and in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, water freezes. When water freezes, it expands, causing cracked hoses, damaged pumps, even cracking the engine block is possible. It isn’t hard to check how your antifreeze is performing. The tester doesn’t cost very much, and they are easy to use and read. If your cooling system’s freezing point isn’t lower than the expected temperatures for your area, it is recommended that you add quality antifreeze to your system. Quality is important, because antifreeze is also the lubricant of your cooling system. Low-quality antifreeze may protect against freezing, but it may not lube your cooling system’s parts, causing premature corrosion and failure.

Traditional antifreeze is an ethylene-glycol-based product. EG antifreeze has been growing less and less favorable, due to its potential environmental hazards, as well as it being deadly when pets or children drink the sweet liquid. Yes, ethylene glycol antifreeze has a sweet taste, not much different than your favorite powdered beverage, only adding to its dangers.

As a result, an antifreeze has been developed that uses propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is considered safe to the environment, as well as to animals and children in case of accidental ingestion. Propylene glycol also tastes foul, almost eliminating the chances of accidental ingestion. AMSOIL has a new propylene-glycol-based antifreeze that is compatible with both propylene and ethylene glycol, so a system flush is not required to use this safe product in your car, no matter what your current cooling system contains.

Preparing For Winter ConditionsEven if you have checked all of the above systems and made sure they are in the best possible shape with the highest quality of fluids and parts, situations still happen. It is always smart to be prepared for a winter emergency. Carry extra items that you might need to survive in case you get stranded in extreme weather. A blanket, extra food, and water can be a lifesaver if you get caught broke down in a storm. Even a shovel and sand can be useful if you need to dig yourself out of the snow or throw sand down to get traction on ice. Jumper cables might help you get a jump a lot faster if your temperature-beaten battery needs a boost. You also want to make sure you carry chains or use snow tires. By being properly prepared and following all of the above-mentioned guidelines, this winter season should be your safest and most enjoyable so far.

Issue #49- Dec. 10/09Page 66 HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

So, you have a receiver hitch. Have you ever used it? Do you know how handy your trailer hitch can be, even if you don’t have a trailer to haul? What do you need to get the most out of your trailer hitch?First. let’s talk about the receiver. It’s a square hole located below your bumper. it’s called a receiver because it “receives” the stuff you stick into it. Makes sense, right?Your receiver is either 1.25 or 2 inches square. The smaller receivers are either class I or class II hitches depending on how much weight they can handle. The 2 inch receivers are class III, or IV; as the class number increases so do the weight limits. For example, a class I hitch can tow up to 2000 lbs. and handle up to 200 lbs. downward pressure on the actual hitch (that’s called tongue weight), while a class IV hitch can tow up to 10,000 lbs. and handle 1,000 to 1,200 lbs. tongue weight.Equally important to the trailer hitch’s weight specifications are the towing specs for your vehicle. You can find these in your owner’s manual and they should always be respected. Overloading your trailer hitch will not only risk damage to your vehicle, but it will also make steering and braking

more difficult, making you a danger on the road. So, what can you do with your receiver hitch? Obviously, you can tow a trailer. If it falls under the weight specs for your hitch and vehicle, you’ll just need a ball mount and a hitch ball. The ball mount is the square metal shaft

that slides into the receiver. The hitch ball mounts onto the ball mount and sticks out behind your vehicle when properly installed. You can tow cargo trailers, camping trailers, utility trailers, just about anything that you want.Beyond towing, you can use your receiver hitch for cargo carriers, bike racks, boat carriers, ATV ramps, ski racks, hitch mounted grills, hitch steps, and to display your personality with a custom hitch cover. The bike racks, cargo carriers, and ski racks are all generally mounted to a shaft that slides into your receiver. These racks offer great convenience as they allow you to safely carry bulky and/or dirty items outside your car. Many of them fold for easier access to the rear of your vehicle and

to require less storage space. Sports racks and cargo carriers are a great use for your receiver hitch. You can also get bed extenders and hitch mounted boat racks that allow you to put one end of a ladder or canoe on top of your pickup cab and support the other end with a rack that mounts to your hitch. Similarly, hitch mounted ramp supports are available to allow you to attach ramps to the back of your pickup so you can drive what ever you need to right into the bed without fear of damaging the tailgate.A hitch mounted step is a great way to access the rear of your vehicle; they are simple to install and fold to be out of the way when you’re not using them. They often double as hitch covers which keep your receiver clean. If you’re a tailgater, you will love a hitch mounted grill. Forget hauling the mess of a charcoal grill or dealing with the small rack on a portable grill; with a hitch mounted grill you can bring the comforts of your back patio with you--it’s easy and awesome. Even if you don’t go with a hitch grill, you’ll want a tailgater hitch cover. It displays the logo of your favorite team and has a built in bottle opener for your convenience.Whatever trailer accessories you choose, make sure you get a hitch lock to keep your stuff safe. This handy little lock replaces the tow pin you use to keep the ball mount in your receiver hitch and will give you peace of mind as you make the most of your trailer hitch.

Use an ice auger or spud (an ice chisel on a pole) to make the hole and to test the ice as you are walking out. Be certain to secure it to your hand with a strap because if it slips out of your hand it will be lost forever.

The hole should be no more than 12 inches or 30.5 cm, to keep the ice near where you stand or sit as solid and stable as possible. This also helps prevent a person falling all the way through in an accident.

Other useful items include a bucket with minnows, a small mesh net to pull minnows out of the bucket and keep your hands out of the water. It is nice to bring a chair to sit on. A gaff hook to haul in fish. A hook

disgorger will help get the hook out of the fish’s mouth without removing your gloves.

Be certain to wear lots of layers, with wool in the outer layers. Wool is a wonderful insulator and retains that ability even when wet.

Most importantly, use your head at all times. If you use proper gear and follow a few common sense safety guidelines, ice fishing is safe, easy and fun.

(NC)—There’s good news and bad news for Canadians who suffer from arthritis pain in the winter.

Let’s start with the bad news: although it’s tempting to stay indoors and hibernate in front of the TV, inactivity during the winter months can actually cause the pain from arthritis to worsen.

The good news is you don’t have to go down a double black diamond ski slope to ward off your winter aches and pains. Maintain your health this winter without freezing your nose or wetting your toes by following some simple guidelines.

• Exercise – Explore new activities such as yoga, tai chi, or a brisk walk indoors at your local community centre or shopping mall. If you’re feeling more energetic, and don’t mind braving the cold, try low-impact activities like snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.

• Preventive care – Arthritis pain can hit at any time. Be sure to follow your doctor’s orders and take your medication as prescribed. By taking your medication

consistently, it can help to not only manage the pain, but also prevent it from getting worse. Over-the-counter pain relievers containing acetaminophen, such as Tylenol Arthritis Pain, are often recommended as the first line of defense against the pain of arthritis.

• Stay hydrated – More water on the ground shouldn’t mean less water in your glass. Continue to drink water throughout the day to keep your joints lubricated and allow for maximum movement and flexibility. - News Canada
