Swanson Florists hosted an open house, the United Methodist Church Bazaar supplied goodies and coffee, the Women’s Club spon- sored the tour of homes and Macke Gowrie hosted an open house. Leading up to the draw- ings Macke Gowrie supplied refreshments, hosted a fundraiser for Southeast Valley with many visitors taking vehicles for test drives, and attendees enjoyed listening to students from Southeast Valley sing Christmas carols. Shortly after 1:00 pm the winners were drawn for each of the wreaths on display for the wreath raffle. The Raffle was sponsored by Xi Eta Sigma Sorority and the Gowrie De- velopment Commission and located at Macke Gowrie. It featured forty four unique wreaths. All Webster County 4-H’ers/FFA mem- bers planning to exhibit market beef at county, state or interstate shows during 2015 must weigh and ear tag their animals during the county wide weigh-in scheduled for Sunday, December 14, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Gowrie Livestock Auction in Gowrie. This will be the only scheduled weigh in for beef. For those 4-H’ers thinking about taking their animals to the Iowa State Fair or AKSAR- BEN, verification will also be done at this time which means retinal eye imaging. Southeast Valley’s Chili Cook Off, Appetizer Contest First ever contest Nov. 26. . .

OnNovember26theSoutheastValleyHighSchoolhostedtheirfirsteverChiliCookOffandAppetizerContest. Staff made chili or appetizers andbroughtthefoodtoschool.Studentsandstaffpurchasedticketsfor$3.Duringthelasthourofschoolthetastetestingbegan.Wehadover15staffmembersparticipatethisyear. The money raised will be donated tothelocalfoodpantries.SoutheastValleyHighSchoolwasabletoraise$400forthefoodpan-tries. ThewinneroftheChiliCookOffwasDevanWalker,ScienceTeacher.AimeeJack-sonwontheAppetizerContestwithherDev-iledEggs. We would like to recognize all whoparticipatedinthisevent.Thiswillbecontin-uedinthefutureaswell.

As I write this I am sitting in cozywarmthandtheworldoutsideisgoingaroundwithoutme. Iwasgetting ready togoup tochurchwherewearepreparingforthefirstSun-dayofAdvent,gettingthebulletinsprintedandfoldedandgettingthingsreadyforpeopletocomeinadecorateonSaturday.Ihadplannedtofinishaprojectofmyown,the“theme”treeIhadbeenputtingupduringAdventforquiteafewyears.Thisyearitisloadedwithcolor-fulsoft,fuzzyteddybearswearingbrightandvariouscoloredhandcrochetedscarves.Thethemeis“HaveaBearyMerryChristmas”. Allyearlongwegetinvolvedinmanydifferentmissions to help others in our com-munityand in theworldaroundus.Ourmis-sionscontinueatChristmastime,especiallybyhelpingalocalcommunitycenterfillthemanyChristmasboxes theygiveout andcollectingcoats, mittens, hats and scarves. But, I alsofeelthechurchneedsa“present”too.Eachofthebearshasa tagon itwithan itemneededby thechurch, things suchasdifferentclean-ingsupplies,varioussizegarbagebags,papergoods, Styrofoam cups, plates, bowls, carryoutcontainers(weeatalotaroundourchurch–mustbea“holdover”fromourNorwegianheritage.)Wealsogiveanopportunitytopur-chasepostagestamps,givevariousofficesup-pliesandmanyofthethings“consumed”byabusiness. When we get the inclement weatherandcan’tgetthere,justlikeinanybusiness,wehave toworkharderand longerwhenwedo.Wearefortunateinthatourworkcanusuallybe“juggled”anddoneduringstrangehours.Itisn’tlikethewintersIrememberonthefarm.Even if therewasablizzardwithhighwindsand very cold temperatures, the cows werehungry andwanted to bemilked. The hogs,chickens, cattle andhorsesdesired their foodon time too. Those animals couldn’t be ne-glecteduntilthestormwasoverandthefarmerdecidedhecouldgooutsideinamorecomfort-ablesetting. Ilookbacknowandthinkwhatanam-by-pambyIamtoday.Oh,Ididn’thavetogooutsidelikemyDaddidbutsomeofthosedaysschoolwasn’tcalledoffsoIwasupattheusualtime,shiveringasIwashedupanddonnedmyschoolclothes.FortunatelyIcouldwatchoutthewindowtothenorthandseethebusturn-ingthecorneraboutaquarterofamileaway.Ihadmybootsonsoitdidn’ttakelongtogetthecoat,hat,glovesandscarfon,grabmylunchandbooksandheadout. Therehadnotbeentimetoscoopapathfromthehouseouttothefrontgate(animalscamefirst)andIdidwhattheotherkidsdid,wadedthroughit.Ican’tre-memberthinkingitwas“toocold”.That’sjusthow itwas in thewinter innorthwestBooneCounty. Today I shiver around my apartmentwhen it isprobablyat least65degrees in themorning.Igrewupinafarmhouse,sleepingin anunheatedupstairs bedroom. Oh, it hadoneofthose“floor”registersdirectlyabovetheheatingstove in thedining roombut thatfirehadbeen“banked” for thenight formorningrevivaland thekitchen rangefirewas started“fromscratch”eachmorning, so I amsure itwasfarfrom65degreesinmyroomandnotalotbetterdownstairsatgettinguptimeforme.Icanevenremembergoingintothekitchentogetadrinkofwaterfromthewaterbucketthatsetonastandandfindingthedipperstuckintheice.ApparentlyMomhadfilledthecoffeepotbeforegoingtobedandifitfrozetherewastimetogetitthawedandcoffeeperkedbefore

The good old days?thechoresweredoneandbreakfastwasready. Iwas also fortunateout thereon thatfarm. Wehadnobathroom(nota lotof thefarmhousesdidback then)butIhadagreatDadwhospoiledmeandMomandtransport-ed the“thundermug”backandforthon thatpath just to thenorthof thehouse. He alsohauledinthedrinking/cookingwaterfromthewellwhichwasa jaunt from thehouse. Wedid have a cistern pump for water for dishwashingandwashingourselves.Thatcisternwasalsohandyfor thewashout inthewashhouse.Waterhad tobepumped in thehouseandtransportedtotheboileronthe“old”cookstoveouttherebutthatwasquiteabitcloserthangoingtothewell.Also“soft”watercre-ates more suds and rinses the clothes betterthanthe“hard”wellwater.Inthesummertheclotheswerehungontheoutsidelineswhichwerequiteafewstepsfromthewashhouse.In thewinter theywere toted into thehouse,throughthekitchen,intothediningroomandup the stairs to the spare room where linesweresetupforwinteruse.Someladieslikedtohangthesheets,pillowcasesand“unmen-tionables” on the outside lines even in thewinter.Theywerejustsurethat thecoldandfreezing process which was bound to occurkept themwhiter,especiallyonasunnyday.Doesanyoneelserememberseeinglongjohnsontheclotheslineallfrozenstifflookingasifthey could stand alone?Nowwe sometimesgripe becausewe let the clothes pile up andwegripemorebecauseittakesabitlongertogetourlaundrydoneintheautomaticwashersanddriers.Alsowhenoneofthoseappliancesbreaksdownyou’dthinktheworldhadcometoanend,especiallyifatriptotheLaundro-mathadtobemadebeforethedisabledappli-ancecouldberepairedorreplaced.Wearecertainlyspoiledtoday.Yep,IbelieveIhavebecomeanamby-pamby.SomedaysIdon’tliketogo“outinthecold”eventhough I can go tomywindow, hold a little“box”inmyhand,aimitatmygaragedoorafewstepsaway,pressthebuttonandupgoesthedoor.ThenItakeanotherlittledevice,aimitandthecarstarts.In10or15minutesIcanbundleuplikeIamattheNorthPole,trudgethosefewstepsandtakeoffinatoasty,com-fortablevehicle.Don’ttellmethosefarmdaysofmychildhoodwerethe“goodolddays”!

By Cassidy Riley In 1929 the world was averydifferentplace.TheAcademyAwardswereheldforthefirsttime.RussiawasstilltheSovietUnion.And the roaringdecadecollapsedandallthatcouldbeheardwasthemoansofthosesufferingfromtheGreat Depression—the result ofthestockmarketcrash. In themidst of the eventsthathave left impressionsonpopcultureandhistorybooks,Elberta(Adkins)Licht,Gowrie,wasbornatherhouseinDeerCreekTown-ship. Living on a farm, Adkinssaidherfamilywasfairlyself-suf-ficient. “Wecannedpracticallyev-erythingthatwe’dhave,”shesaid.“Wedidn’tgo into townandbuyanything.” Her family’s property hadcherry and apple trees and hergrandfatherhadasmokehouseforbutcheredmeat. Adkins’s childhood coin-cided with the Great Depression.While she said her family didn’thave much, she cherished whatwasgiven to her.To this day the

teasetsheplayedwithasagirlsitsin a case inher living room.ShesaidherShirleyTempledollisstillinitsbox. “We didn’t have every-thing like kids today,” she said.“We had bare minimum and wewerehappy.” She said sources of en-tertainment were different in herchildhood than they are now.Mostlyshewouldplaygameswithherfivesiblingsorputpuzzlesto-gether. However, she remembersherfamilygoingtothemoviesonoccasion.Sheparticularlyremem-bersgoingtoGonewiththeWind,whichshesaidwasagreatmovie. “ThereasonIrememberitiswewenttosofew,”shesaid. She said her educationalexperiences were also differ-ent when compared with today’sschools.Therewerenosportsforgirlsandveryfewotherextracur-ricularactivities. Herhighschoolyearswerealsoaverytryingtimeforherfam-ilybecauseheroldestbrotherEd-garwasintheUnitedStatesArmyduringWorldWarII.Shesaidshe

isunsureaboutwhereherbrotherwas stationed throughout thewarother than she distinctly remem-bers he was on a ship going toJapanwhenthewarwasdeclaredover and he was able to returnhome. Duringhisservicethefam-ily wrote letters back and forth.Adkins still has a silver braceletwithanengravingofhernameherbrother made for her during thewar. He sent one to each of hersistersaswell.Thebackismarked“Luzon P.I.,” which Adkins sus-pects means he was stationed inthePhilippines. “Iknowitreallyhurt[my]mom,” she said. “Itwas hard forfamiliestobesplit.” When the war ended herfathertookAdkinsandhersiblingstoFortDodgewherepeoplewere

celebratingtheendofthewar. “A lot of people gatheredin the street in Fort Dodge,” shesaid. “Peoplewerehappy.Every-body was happy to be there cel-ebratingit.” Adkins graduated fromhighschoolinthespringon1946,almostayearafterthewarended.By the fall of that sameyear shewastakingclassesatUniversityofNorthernIowatobecomeateach-erbutshewouldnevergetherde-gree. AftertwoquarterssheleftschoolbecauseshewasunabletogetintotheclassesshewantedandshetookajobdoingbookkeepingforahardwarestoreinFortDodge.HerlifeinFortDodgeeventuallyledhertoherfuturehusband,Wil-lisAdkins.

WillisAdkinsandElbertaLichtmetattheLara-marBallroominFortDodgewhereshewouldgodancingwithfriends.Theyweremarriedin1949.InthefirstfewyearsoftheirmarriagesheandWillisAdkins moved around to differentfarmhouses.Itwasn’tuntil1956whenthecou-plemovedintothehouseshecallshometoday. ElbertaAdkinsworked several jobs inGowrie while raising a family of three—twogirls and one boy—including 35 years as thebookkeeperforGowrieMunicipalUtilities. Duringher timeat theutilitiesplatEl-bertaAdkinsaccumulatedmanymemories.Shesaid one year she especially remembers was1991whenanicestormtookdownapowerlinenortheastoftown.Shesaidpeoplewerewithoutpowerforaweek. Shesaidsheremembertwocarsthathitthebuildingbecausetheownersleftthemrun-ningwhile theywereinsidepayingbills—oneevendamagedthebricksonthebuilding.How-ever,shesaidherfunniestmemorywassome-thingsheheardaboutratherthanwitnessedher-

Whileworkingattheutilitiesplantshewasalsoinvolvedinthecommunity.ShewasamemberoftheWomen’sAuxiliaryforVeteransofForeignWarsuntiltheydisbandedanddonat-edthebuildingtothecitytobecomethecom-munitycenter.Shewascityclerkfrom1971to1989 and shewas a foundingmember of theGowrie ambulance service, which she serveduntilshewas62. “OneofthebestthingsaboutmyjobisIwasrightclose tohome,”shesaid.“Ididn’thavetodriveoutoftowntogotowork.” ElbertaAdkins said her family has al-waysbeenthemostimportantthinginherlifeand she always strived to be involved in herchildren’s livesbygoingtosportsevents—in-

County to continue to make up to five (5) consecutive annual payments of Economic Development Grants to Developer consisting of a declining percentage (provided, however, that the percentage has been increased by 10% in each of the final three years) of the Tax Increments pursuant to the Iowa Code Section 403.19 and generated by the construction of the Minimum Improvements, the cumulative total for all such payments not to exceed the lesser of $85,000 (previously $50,000), or the amount accrued under the formula outlined in the proposed Amended and Restated Agreement, under the terms and following satisfaction of the conditions set forth in the Amended and Restated Agreement.
