Page 25: Debbie Resume 9

My Artwork is my voice in visual format, expressing feelings, thoughts and emotions that I am unable to articulate verbally. Part of my work addresses social issues such as child abuse, elder care and alcoholism. Some of my work is completed to simply make an emotional impact on the viewer and intended to elicit a raw emotional response. All of my work is meant to inner act with the viewer on an emotional level no matter what that response might be: love, loathing, shock, appalled, tranquil, thought provoking.

At times I draw inspiration for my work from events in my life that have had a profound impact on me. Other times my work is an eruption of emotion that captures a moment in time, a glance, or an atmosphere. And still there are times when my work is more narrative in nature, telling a story as painting did during the time of the Renaissance. There are yet other occasions when I incorporate self composed poetry and verse into the work.

I work in a variety of media including but not limited to oils, mixed media, pastels, and collage. This permits me the freedom to select the medium that will emphasize and intensify the concept that I am attempting to communicate. Incorporating contrast, texture, dramatic lighting, strong chromatic colors into dynamic compositions, I strive for technical excellence in any medium that I choose to work in.

Some could argue that there is no commonality in my body of works that it is not cohesive, that you cannot look at my work and immediately recognize it as my work. I would state that the thread that is woven through my work that is indeed binding is the expression of, exploration of, and the quality of emotional content. For it is an elusive, intangible quality that I strive to attain in my work and not easily recognizable and sometimes as subtle as a whisper while other times as shocking as a slap in the face, however my goal is to elicit an emotional connection between the work, the artist and the viewer.

My work is part of me and holds a part of me with in it and I want my work to touch people with emotion.
