Linekin Bay ResortBoothbay Harbor, Maine
GLA is proud to be a part of the planning effort to redevelop a nineteen acre summer vacation destination at the Linekin Bay Resort. Thirty-four cottages were sited to maximize views to the rugged Maine coastline. GLA produced meticulous grading studies to ensure that critical stands of trees would remain and developed planting plans that provide privacy barriers between the homes and preserve native plant species. As part of the design team GLA approached the development plan with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and green building practices, using energy-efficient construction materials and techniques.

Maine Street StationBrunswick, Maine
The Town of Brunswick, Maine initiated the Maine Street Station Redevelopment Master plan in an effort to return an underutilized brownfield site to active use as a multi-modal hub with train, bus, taxi and pedestrian friendly access, along with multi-use spaces ranging from offices, service centers, retail, restaurants, theatre and residential space. In the early planning stages of this project, Gates, Leighton & Associates’ ability to integrate massive infrastructure with the small scale of a New England town and sensitive approach to communication with the community resulted in a broadly advocated for and understood vision of a vibrant downtown center.
Tri-fold Flyer
PROJECT OVERVIEWThis tri-fold marke ng fl yer was created for a Landscape Architectural conference that was focusing on public planning and adap ve re-use.
Poster
PROJECT OVERVIEWThis poster was created to represent projects in New England that have u lized historic sites and buildings to create new urban environments. The colors of the poster represent brick, stone and plants. The fi lm strip type display allowed for mul ple projects to be represented.
Town-wide Signage
PROJECT OVERVIEW The design theme of the signs and kiosks was developed to combine the history of the town with modern touches. This project was a collabora on between a private bank and the town of Gardiner, Maine. The objec ve was to “re-think” the major entrances into the city owned Waterfront Park. The signs were designed to transform un-welcoming city streetscape into a pedestrian friendly gateway to the waterfront. Expanded wayfi nding signage system throughout the downtown waterfront district was coordinated with a series of interpre ve panels of Gardiner’s rich heritage.
Banner Style Signage
PROJECT OVERVIEWThese streetscape banners were designed as part of a vision plan project with the city of Fall River Massachuse s. All of the elements incorporated in the re-design of the Main Street Vision Plan work toward providing a Complete Streets experience that, once constructed, will enhance the walkability and experience shared by residents and tourists alike.
Ipad Application
PROJECT OVERVIEWThe primary objec ve of the app is to educate students and others about what hides below the waters of RI. Designed as an iPad app that will explore the many shipwrecks that have happened over the past 200 years around the state. The app is comprised of several diff erent int
Currency Re-design
PROJECT OVERVIEWAs part of a class project we were asked to redesign US currency. My design theme concept was to incorporate bridges across the United States. I chose this theme because bridges are icons of strength, innova on, and the linking of communi es bringing all ci zens closer together. I have also decided to use diff erent colors for each diff erent bill.

Magazine
PROJECT OVERVIEWTo document and highlight the history of the Portuguese Discovery Monument in Newport, Rhode Island I created this informa ve magazine. The magazine describes how the architect took his inspira on from the original monument park in Sagres, Portugal. Other features of the magazine explain the meaning behind the diff erent sculpture features and the overall layout of the monument.
Branding & Logo
PROJECT OVERVIEWPrior to the dedica on ceremony of the newly built Portuguese Discovery Monument the city of Newport expressed interest in developing a logo that represented the monument. The design was developed using the original sketch book design. The fi nal logo showed the monument with a blue sky meets green grass background. T-shirts and coff ee cups were produced for the dedica on ceremony and passed out to members of the commi ee.
Website
PROJECT OVERVIEW I developed this website as a way to provide informa on and images regarding the history and development of the Portuguese Discovery Monument at Brenton Point State Park in Newport, Rhode Island.
Chronology of the Chain Bridge
Feb. 1792 Essex-Merrimack Bridge Corporation organized and engages
Timothy Palmer, an early American bridge designer, to design
bridges at Deer Island.
Nov. 1792 Toll bridges at Deer Island open for business and are the fi rst
wooden truss bridges built in the United States.
1810 Chain suspension bridge replaces wooden bridge from Newburyport
to Deer Island, still known as the Chain Bridge.
1827 Chain Bridge collapses. A man driving heavy wagon pulled by a
team of four oxen and a horse and rider fall into the river. The men
and horse survive.
1827 Newburyport - Amesbury horse tram starts service over the bridges.
Mid 1800s Essex-Merrimack Bridge from Deer Island to Salisbury Point (now
Amesbury) is covered for protection from weather.
1868 Bridges become public.
1882 Essex-Merrimack Bridge replaced with an iron bridge.
1890 Electric trolley tries fi rst Newburyport to Amesbury run. The trolley
fails and is towed back to Newburyport by horses.
1891 Electric trolley service replaces horses on the Newburyport -
Amesbury line.
1910 Chain Bridge replaced by a concrete tower wire cable suspension
bridge, the only suspension highway bridge in Massachusetts.
1930 Last trolley runs between Newburyport and Amesbury.
2006 Essex-Merrimack Bridge renamed the Lieutenant Derek S. Hines
Memorial Bridge after a Newburyport resident killed in Afghanistan.
2012 New Hines Bridge completed.

Built in 1792 for the toll-gatherers who collected fees on the bridge crossing Deer Island,
this house was also run as a tavern for the accommodation of travelers. In 1870, prominent
author Harriet Prescott Spoff ord (1835-1921) and her husband Richard purchased the home
and moved the house which was close to the highway several yards back from the road.

History of the Whittier Bridge
Like the current Whittier Bridge, the original Whittier Memorial Bridge was designed to be a
monumental gateway arch structure at the northern border of Massachusetts. Th e original bridge
was a double-barreled, three-span continuous steel arch through truss designed as a smaller
version of the 1930s-era Bourne and Sagamore Bridges over the Cape Cod Canal. Th e original
Whittier Memorial Bridge was demolished in 2014 to make way for the current bridge, which was
completed in 2016. Th is bridge was the fi rst Interstate Highway bridge in the Commonwealth to
incorporate a shared-use bicycle/pedestrian path into its design.

Th e original John Greenleaf Whittier Memorial Bridge, named aft er the revered 19th century
poet and abolitionist, was constructed on this crossing in 1951-1954 as part of the planned
relocation of US Route 1 away from downtown Newburyport. Th at bridge was
absorbed into the interstate highway system in 1956 when this section
of Route 1 became Interstate 95.

From ceiled rooms, from silent books,
From crowded car and town,
Dear Mother Earth, upon thy lap,
We lay our tired heads down.
Cool, summer wind, our heated brows;
Blue river through the green
Of clustering pines, refresh the eyes
Which all too much have seen.

Wayfinding & Branding
PROJECT OVERVIEWFor the town of Putnam I created a master plan for signage and wayfi nding. The Downtown Signage and Wayfi nding plan serves to create a public signage program that establishes a consistent design style for Putnam’s informa onal and wayfi nding signage in the downtown and throughout the town including selected ‘gateways’. A unifi ed signage program will provide a more easily recognizable wayfi nding system and a way of direc ng and informing visitors to key des na ons, and is also a “branding” or image tool that is benefi cial to marke ng the town and its resources. The signage plan outlines a program to comprehensively e together various types of town signage, and provide
guidance on the design of any future town signage.
Gateway & Entrance Signs
PROJECT OVERVIEWGateway and Entrance signs are designed to welcome visitors to a specifi c area. They are planned to evoke the sense that you have arrived at a specifi c des na on. Those des na ons range from businesses, educa onal facili es, parks, and town center. Size, shape, color choice, and fonts all help to create the message.
Marketing Flyer
PROJECT OVERVIEWThis double sided 9”x6” marke ng piece was created for a northeast planning trade-show. The background was black to highlight the images and coordinate with the glasses which were part of the piece. Holes were punched in the sheet to accommodate the glasses. I also used a graphic of sunglasses behind the word “see” to highlight the message.
Fat Boy Drive In 111 Bath Rd., Brunswick, MEFor years the Spring ritual in Maine is to make a pilgrimage to Fat Boy’s in Brunswick. Not only is it one of the last true drive-ins left in this area but the food is excellent. The value and the old style drive in at-mosphere makes Fat Boy’s a great experience!
Moody’s Dine 1885 At-lantic Highway, Waldoboro, MEFor over eighty years later, we are very pleased to have served over a million people in our motel and diner. We have evolved from three cabins our fi rst year, with no diner, to our present 18 cabins and rooms and a 104 seat diner that has become a national icon, featured in magazines and on television shows around the world.

Web & Print
PROJECT OVERVIEWTo document a 7 day bike ride my son and father-in-law took I created a web blog using blogger.com. The look of the blog was inten onally dark to represent the northeast. Images of a bicycle res ng against dark foliage was the background. The font colors were light for contrast. The site was updated daily with images and details about the days travels. In addi on to daily updates the site had a contact me page, links to other bicycle trips and a helpful ps sec on.
A er the trip was completed I created a poster documen ng the route that they followed and highlighted some of the memorable diners along the way.
Print - Booklet
PROJECT OVERVIEWTypography Book: I conceptualized and designed this Typography book using a combina on of Photoshop and InDesign. The images used for this book were photographs I took on a family trip to Europe. I felt that using these images, some of buildings from the 1700’s, added to the composi on of the book and highlighted the provided text. This book was also hand bound.
Web site
PROJECT OVERVIEWTo document a bicycle ride from Rhode Island to Key West, Florida I created this web/blog page. The background was selected to represent the beachy look of Key West. The colors were complementary to that beach look with shades of tans and blue-greens. Daily posts documented the distance, weather, road condi ons and any signifi cant or interes ng facts. The site also had links to other bicycle sites.
Print - Posters
PROJECT OVERVIEWThese 2 posters were both created using a combina on of Photoshop and Illustrator so ware. Both posters were limited to 3 colors to keep the graphic strong and simple.
Print - Marketing
PROJECT OVERVIEWYear Up Providence is part of a na onal non-profi t educa onal facility. For this project I created 8 double sided marke ng and outreach pages. I also created a company folder and a postcard. Year Up had restric ons with colors and fonts that I had to be mindful of. I was able to modify the logo by adding the gold color to the word Providence.

6 Word Memoir
This project required me to defi ne myself using a design of your crea on with a 3 color limit and only six autobiographical words.
Fabulous Foster Family; My “F” Tree; My poster was developed to represent who I am. I have been a mom for just over 20 years to 2 great boys and have been a foster parent for over 12 years. We have had many children become part of our extended family during the past 12 years and are very lucky to have expanded upon our biological family tree. Our family is very diverse, very loving, and at mes a bit crazy. I glad we have had this experience.
Subscription Box Concept
PROJECT OVERVIEWThis project consisted of conceptualizing, branding, and prototyping a subscrip on box. I created the 40 Fabulous WELLNESS Box. A 40 Fabulous Box contains a minimum of 5 healthy lifestyle products, with a mix of vitamins, fi tness, beauty, spa products, aromatherapy and edible treats, the majority of which are either organic, all-natural, and from small businesses. Boxes are hand-packed by owner Deb Howard. $40 a month & $5 shipping in the U.S.
