Funeral arrangements were not ascertained. October 8, 1948 Twenty Year Ago Claude Hazelwood a, Hillview resident, aged 45 years is being held pending an official investigation into the death of his housekeeper, Ollie Alfred, aged 30 years, found shot to death in the Hazelwood home Sunday night.

    Mrs. Lewis Andrews, who formerly was a resident of this vicinity, died at the home of her son, Levi S. Andrews. October 12, 1948 Forty Year Ago 1917 GREENE COUNTY Recent deaths of interest in Carrollton are those of Alexander H. Aulabaugh, age 76, a Mason for 55 years, dying in Granite City. Mrs. Carrie Boring-Bacon, wife of Charles D. Bacon, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. R. O. Young, in the Rubicon vicinity. She was aged 57 years, 6 months and 7 days. March 19, 1948 Twenty Year Ago November 5, 1948 Forty Year Ago John Baker died at his home in this city after a lingering illness with lung trouble. He was aged 48 years and was survived by his widow and one son. November 19, 1948 Forty Year Ago Mrs. Harold T. Barton died at the home of her mother in Parsons, Kan. She was a victim of tuberculosis and was aged 29 years. Her maiden name was Jessie May Davis, she being born near White Hall. 21 Nov 1837 – Backwoodsman, Grafton, Illinois Died at Camden, mouth of the Illinois River, Drucilla, only daughter of Robert C. Baugh. Aged 3 years and 10 months. John Beard, aged 67 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Stults, in the Barr vicinity. Forty Year Ago March 19, 1948 Gazette 30 August 1884 Berdan (Carrollton Twp.) Judge Berdan died this week, lived in Jacksonville, our town named after him. November 26, 1948 Twenty Years Ago Hugh R. Brown, of Carrollton, who was well known throughout this section as a peddler of maps and other articles, died at the county farm on Wednesday of this week. 1915 FROM GREENE COUNTY Mrs. Pauline M. Buie of Carrollton, relict of the late Donald Buie, died last week at the ripe age of 82 years. Funeral services were held last Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton. Two children of their first marriage to August Fetty survive her. September 17, 1948 Forty Years Ago Mrs. Margaret E. (Black) Burns died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Cameron, where she had made her home during the past few years since the death of her husband. She was a native of Pennsylvania and was aged 76 years.

    CALLS OF THE GRIM REAPER Editor J. M. Page has received a telegram informing him of the death of his sister-in-law, Mrs. E. W. Page of Rosenburg, Oregon. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pointer died Tuesday at 10 p.m. The remains were taken to Nokomis, Ill., burial services being held on New Year. Charles Boyd was killed Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock by a pile of boxes falling upon him at the Illinois Glass Co. plant at Alton. The man was 34 years old. Mrs. Bessie Schimpff, wife of editor August W. Schimpff of Collinsville, Sunday at 3:30 p.m. suddenly succumbed to heart failure at an age of 45 years. Our sympathies in these sad hours of bereavement. Miss Myrtle Warren of Alton, 12 years old, died Tuesday morning. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon, Rev. M. W. Twing officiating. She is survived by her mother Mrs. Thomas Dabbs, her stepfather and one stepbrother. August 27, 1948 Forty Years Ago Logan Canatsey, aged 70 years, died at his home west of Athensville. He had been ill two years with heart trouble. DEATHS Former Jerseyan Dies In Chicago Word was received here Tuesday of the death of Henrietta Carr, widow of the late Attorney J. S. Carr which occurred early that morning at her home in Chicago. The deceased resided in Jerseyville for many years. Funeral arrangements were not learned. May 24, 1932 GREENE COUNTY DEATHS Reaper death the past week held the following harvest in White Hall: John Cherry, a former resident of White Hall, died at Roodhouse, 81 years old; THE JERSEYVILLE REPUBLICAN – 1915 September 24, 1948 John F. Cook, aged 68 years, died at his home near Wrights Tuesday, September 18, at 7:45 a.m. after an illness of several weeks. November 19, 1948 Twenty Year Ago Dorothy Bay Crum, aged 4 years, died on Wednesday afternoon at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Crum, who live a few miles southwest of Rockbridge, from swallowing a grain of corn which entered her windpipe and lodged in her lungs causing pneumonia. JOE) died Nov 2, 1920, 58 yrs old, cancer former resident of Rockbridge Athensville Mrs. S.A.D, King 58, passed away (sic) June 29, 1916 from blood poison in a foot. Gazette-Patriot Wrights May 18, 1916 JOHN DOYLE 82, who made his way home with his son J.F. Doyle, passed away unexpectedly by the road side as he was returning home on his pony from the pasture on Sunday, May 20. He was a native of Greene Co. and a resident of the town of Wrights. Rev. C. Nash Dead (1910) Last October Rev. and Mrs. Calloway Nash, at the earnest solicitation of their sons Raymond and Albert, went to Los Angeles, Cal., to spend the winter. It would be a pleasant visit for them, and they would avoid the cold Illinois winter. They reached their destination safely, and were happy with their sons and other relatives in the balmy climate on the Pacific coast. Last week Mr. Nash became ill, the old trouble returning in acute form. The physicians decided an operation necessary. Raymond telegraphed the news to his sister, Miss Clara, who is a teacher in the public schools here. Saturday a second wire reached here, with the information that the operation was performed Friday. She was asked to come prepared to stay two months. Miss Nash got leave of absence, and expected to start Monday. Saturday night she received word to come at once. She departed Sunday morning. Monday Frank D. Heller received a dispatch from Raymond containing the sad news that Rev. Nash died that day, that the funeral would take place on Clara’s arrival, and that the body would be cremated. Mrs. Nash is also reported very sick from nervous collapse. Sweeney which occurred at her home in Houston, Texas, Saturday evening, March 29th. The deceased is the widow of the late John Sweeney a former resident of Jerseyville. Mr. and Mrs. Sweeney left this city several years ago to reside in Houston where they became very prominent in business. Mrs. Sweeney is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edith Giles and six grandchildren. Burial was in Houston. E. O. Tandy E. O. Tandy met his death suddenly at a hotel in Raleigh, N. C. Mr. Tandy had been a traveling salesman for a school book publishing house and had made numerous trips to Jerseyville. Mr. Tandy resided in Jacksonville. GAZETTE – PATRIOT, April 21, 1988 – 75 years ago, April 17, 1913 – Mary Kirk, 65 died at the family home south of Carrollton. She was born March 6, 1848, on the island of Madeira off the northwest coast of Africa, and married John Kirk Sept. 5, 1862. The couple had resided in Greene County since that time. She was survived by her husband, 12 children, 27 grandchildren and two sisters. Newspaper unknown – 1915 – Hugh McFarland, who for 40 years conducted a blacksmith shop in White Hall, Ill., died at Houston, Texas, 70 years old. Newspaper unknown – 1915 – Charles Hillig, a well-known barber of Carrollton, was claimed by relentless death at an age of 33 years, 8 months and 26 days. 1915 – Remains of James Baker Pegram, who lived six miles west of Carrollton and died at an age of 64 years, found their last resting place at the Carrollton Mausoleum Thursday.

Saturday, Nov. 20, 1869 – DIED – CAMP – On the 30th ult., at the residence of her sister Mrs. W. B. Thaxton, near Roodhouse Station, Mrs. Nancy Camp, 67 years old. The deceased was a native of Windsor, Vt. But had long been a resident of this vicinity. Her death leaves a void not easily filled, for she was a woman of rare energy and perseverance, always ready to lend a helping hand to needy and sick. Her death is mourned as a public loss. Saturday, Jan. 8, 1870 –DIED – JONES – Friday morning Jan. 7 at Wilmington, Greene Co., Josiah Jones, esq. Mr. Jones was well known in this vicinity, being one of the oldest inhabitants of this county and a resident of Wilmington 35 years. Another good man has gone. Saturday, Jan. 15, 1870 – DIED – LEE – On Monday morning, Jan 3, 1870, at Virden, Illinois, Thomas Lee, formerly a resident of White Hall and well know in this vicinity. Saturday, Feb. 1870 – OBITUARY – Addie Estelle, daughter of Henry and Rosetta Tunison, was born in Greene County, Illinois, Sept. 1, 1858, and died Feb. 3, 1870, aged 11 years, 5 months and 3 weeks. Newspaper unknown – Jan. 1917 – Greene County news Jacob Dohm, deceased, of Greenfield, left an estate valued at $36,000. Jacob Dohm receives 120 acres of land and must pay each of three sisters $2,100. The will of William P. Lowenstein of White Hall, made 13 years ago, disposes of 448 acres of land and personal property worth $6,500, the entire estate being worth $50,000. A brother and two sisters received $1 each. Mrs. Mary C. Davidson died of pneumonia at the home of her son, J. L. Davidson, of White Hall. Copied from the Carrollton Banner, Feb. 1, 1851 Newspaper unknown, March 1915 – I. N. Terry at Los Angeles, California, which was caused from an accident from a coal oil lamp. Interment took place on Sunday, Dec. 11, 1898. Mrs. Terry formerly resident here. Civil War Vets April 26, 1946 Lewis R. Tolbert, 99, believed to be last Civil War veteran in Jersey, Greene, Calhoun and Pike counties, died April 21 at the home of his son, Emil Tolbert, in Calhoun Co. Dorothy M. Tuey, 85, died at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. She was born Nov. 11, 1918, near Carrollton to Charles and Cora (Sturmon) Brooks. She married Vincent H. Tuey on July 3, 1939, in St. Louis. He died Jan. 15, 1991. Geo. Walker passed away at the county home at the age of 70 years. He was deaf and dumb and an inmate of the institute for the last 40 years. October 22, 1948 Forty Year Ago John Waltrip, aged 75 years, died at the home of his son, Eugene, at Wrights. DEATHS Jersey County News 1933 Dies While Visiting Here. Mrs. Sarah Ann Waters of White Hall, while visiting at the home of her son, Charles Waters, in Jerseyville, became ill last Thursday and died. The body was taken to White Hall for burial. Winfield S. Webb died on Monday, Dec. 24, at 10 a.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Chinowth, in this city. He was aged 82 years. December 31, 1948 Twenty Years Ago Lawrence H. Welker, a well known contractor and builder of White Hall, died May 10 at Buena Vista, Texas, where he went last fall to supervise the construction of some buildings on property he owned there. March 25, 1948 Twenty Year Ago Thos. C. Woodman died at his home in this city after a lingering illness with tuberculosis. He was aged 48 year and was survived by his wife and four children.
