Iwouldliketothankforthecon idenceyoudemonstratedtomewithmy appointment as President of the ISEM. This is forme a greathonorandpleasure.The irstofmymainaims is thatofcontinuingthegreatjobdonefrommypredecessorswhoreallycontributedforthead-vancementandactivityofourSociety. ThelastISEMCongresswasheldinthebeautifulcityofDebrecen,organized by our Past-President and friend Norbert Nemeth. It was averysuccessfulCongressbothfromthescienti icandorganizingpointofview. The Opening Ceremony started with a touching tribute to theMemory of our beloved Professor Sun Lee by Prof. Istvan Furka who,notwithstandinghewasnotinperfecthealthconditions,preparedavid-eowhichwashighlyappreciated. It is just lookingatthehistorythatwecanbuildthefuture!Then,OurPresidentMihaiIonactookusina20-year

journeyofexperienceintheMicrosurgicalTrainingPrograminTimisoara.Afterwards,amasterlylec-tureinoncologicresearchwasheldbyProf.RobertM.Hoffman,anotherpioneerinexperimentalmi-crosurgery, who reported very important translational aspects and their clinical implications. TheOpening Ceremony endedwith a fantasticMediChoir composed by physicians, researchers and stu-dents. TheWelcome Receptionwas characterized by a real surprise: we could hear the sound of abrandnewandoriginaltypeofpiano,theBoganyiPiano.WehadtheopportunitytowitnessanotherexampleofhowMusicisabridgebetweenArtandScience!(tobecontinued,page4)

InearlyOctober2018,theDepartmentofMedical,SurgicalSciencesandAdvancedTechnologies"G.F.Ingrassia"oftheSchoolofMedicineattheUniversityofCatania(Italy)organizedafourthcourseof

ExperimentalMicrosurgery.At a irst read, thisplainphrase may sound as any trivial course announce-ment,yetithadaprofoundsigni icancefortheorgan-izers and the participating faculty. The main reasonforthiswasbecauseitwas32yearsagosincethepre-viouscourse,whichwascoordinatedbyProfessorSunLee himself. The local faculty was represented byProf.AntonioDiCataldo(chairmanoftheISEMEduca-tional Committee), Prof. StefanoPuleo, Prof. GaetanoDelaGrecaandDr.AntonioPesce,togetherwithstafffromthenewlyinauguratedstateoftheartCenterforAdvancedPreclinical in vivoResearch (CAPiR), coor-dinatedbyProf.RosalbaParenti.Thetraininglabora-tory had four working stations itted with cameras

andscreenstogetherwithbrandnewsetsofhighqualitymicrosurgical instruments.Dr.MihaiOlteanandDr.MatsHellstromfromGothenburg,SwedencontributedasinvitedlecturersandinstructorsanddeepenedthealreadyestablishedcollaborationbetweenthetwocountriesintheNorthandSouthEu-rope.Lecturesweredeliveredonawiderangeoftopicsfromrodentsurgicalanatomytoasepticsurgicaltechniques,alongwithfocusedtalksonnovelimagingtechnologiesinlivingsmallanimals,liver ibrosisandthebene itsofmicrosurgicaltrainingandpracticeforsurgeonsintraining.Thelectureswereat-tendedbyalargegroupofsurgeons,biologistsandmedicalstudentswithanagespanrangingfromtheearlytwentiestothemid-eighties.Thecourseincludedthreelongdayswhereallsixparticipantsatthepracticalsessionsexperiencedtheentirerangeoffeelings,includingdeepfrustrationandabsolutesatis-faction - as it is customarywith thiskindof events. At the endof the course,mostparticipantswit-nessedthemiracleoftheir irstpulsatingfemoralanastomosis.Inouropinion,thesixmembersofISEMattendingthiseventasfacultyorinstructorsembodiedthededication,friendshipandcollaborationthatmake ISEM the thriving family it represents. TheScienti icProgramincludedkeynoteLectures,PapersandPostersonresearchabouttrans-plantationmodels and immunology, ischemia-reperfusion procedures, translational research,micro-surgical techniques frombench tobedside, including lymphaticmicrosurgeryandentireeducationalmicrosurgicalsession.Theprogramproperlyre lectedthegoalsofourSocietythatistogiveyoungre-searchersthepossibilitytopresenttheirstudies,discusswithseniorexpertsandreceivesuggestionsandideastodevelopintheirownresearch,promotingtheirparticipationswithvariousYoungInvesti-gators Awards. Furthermore, young researchers had the opportunity to gain some experience with

high idelity simulators and to assist to opera-tions with the very last technology such as the4K/3D VideoMicrosurgery.
