dear friends. From the Artistic DirectorDear Friends of The Choir School,

In 2014, as for the past two decades, we did one thing exceptionally well at The Choir School. We achieved excellence.

How did we do it? We began by focusing on the individual strengths and talents of over 100 choristers. We set high standards for each one and gave them the tools they needed to meet their goals. Then we taught them how to work together – how to contribute their excellence in a spirit of partnership and cooperation to achieve even more.

This spirit of cooperation went far beyond what we asked of our choristers. In 2014, partnership and collaboration took our entire organization to new levels of excellence, as Choir School volunteers, board, and staff joined with fellow arts organizations, community groups, area associations and churches, and corporate and individual patrons to create greater capacity and to bring the beauty of choral music to an ever-wider audience.

In 2014, we said goodbye to the Aaron Goen, a gifted musician and teacher who will always remain a great friend to The Choir School. We were extremely fortunate to welcome Elizabeth Lenti, who adds spectacular organ skills and a long resume of choral music accomplishments to our collective talents. Elizabeth’s warmth and incredible teaching abilities are already having an enormous impact on our program.

As we look forward to 2015, with our Residency at Salisbury Cathedral before us, I am grateful for the collective talent, commitment, support, and creative energy that has sustained our program for 22 seasons. Together, we have enriched the lives of hundreds of young people and thousands of audience members. The excellence we have worked together to achieve has enriched my life too, and my hope is that is will continue to enrich yours.

At The Choir School, the essential elements of art begin in our rehearsal rooms, where choristers meet each week to gain tools and practices that will lead to true musicianship. In 2014, over 120 young people came from all over the Charlotte region to study sight-singing, music theory, expression, language, and musical style. Along the way, they also developed confidence, problem solving skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Choir School choristers, from Town Choir members to MasterSingers, offered the gift of exceptional choral performance to thousands of audience members in 2014. Our season included a three-concert series in Uptown Charlotte, concerts at Davidson College and The Mint Museum, and performances for the British American Business Council, Charlotte’s Good Fellows Club, and tour audiences from Virginia to Connecticut. The choirs also led occasional worship services for our longstanding sustaining partner, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Travel is one of many Choir School experiences designed to nurture both musicianship and practical life skills. In 2014, 64 members of the Tour Choirs and the MasterSingers Ensemble traveled from Charlotte to New York City, gaining cultural experience, visiting iconic sites, and performing for new audiences each day of the 6-day journey. Among other venues, our 2014 tour took us to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania, where Choir School alumnus Derrick Goff serves as Choirmaster.

In 2014, we worked in close partnership with other members of the arts community, educators throughout the region, area corporations, and grant makers to help enrich our broad and diverse region with arts education and performance. Individual donors and audience members were also vital to our success – their energy and commitment to arts education has sustained our program for over twenty years.

Special thanks to the British American Business Council; Heather Lee, Elementary General Music Teacher at Hidden Valley Elementary School; James Meena, General Director and Principal Conductor, Opera Carolina; & Tom Gabbard, President, Blumenthal Performing Arts.

Our mission is to strengthen young lives through rigorous, excellent choral education and performance opportunities. Our method is to set high standards, provide superior instruction, open the door to new ideas and experiences, and challenge our choristers to become their very best selves. With music education as our tool, we prepare young people to take their place in the world, whatever path they choose.
