DEAR FRIENDS,

Welcome to Summermusik 2018!

I am thrilled to present our exciting programs for this summer. They will feature what you have come to expect: the known, the unknown and the unexpected – all performed by the first-class musicians of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.

As always, we present music in three different formats: our Mainstage series - concerts with full orchestra, the more intimate A Little Afternoon Musik events on Sunday afternoons, and the highly successful Chamber Crawl series. Each of the series has its own unique format and identity – and we hope to see you at all of them! Our Mainstage series features four experiences – each with its own distinct character. As a tribute to the Royal wedding of Prince Harry, our opening night will explore English music – from the 18th century Baroque composer (and Master of the King’s Music) William Boyce to the 20th century icon and England’s ultimate musical voice, Edward Elgar. Cincinnati native Coleman Itzkoff will be the soloist on Elgar’s emotionally charged cello concerto. We will also perform works by George Frideric Handel and one of my favorite composers, Franz Joseph Haydn, whose pieces were inspired by royal life and the city of London.

The Four Seasons: Reimagined will showcase music that was inspired by nature. Iceland has long been a hotbed for some of the most innovative composers of our time. Valgeir Sigurðsson’s music to the documentary “Dreamland” is an enchantingly beautiful and touching work. The popularity of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons motivated contemporary composer Max Richter to write a fascinating remix of this set of virtuosic violin concertos. We will perform interwoven movements from these two versions. It will feel like seeing a familiar musical landscape through new glasses. We are proud to present our phenomenal new concertmaster Celeste Golden Boyer as soloist.

Our third Mainstage concert follows the path of the famous Red Violin as fictionalized in the 1998 film “The Red Violin.” The movie – and our concert – follows the violin from 17th century Italy to 19th century Austria to 20th century China. The legendary 1720 Red “Mendelssohn” Stradivarius that inspired the story is owned by violin virtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn, our guest artist that evening.

Heroes can be found everywhere, and music – with its power to trigger strong emotions and to touch the soul – is a compelling means to honor heroism. For our closing night event, we are partnering with four members of Cincinnati’s Music Resource Center who have composed music inspired by the life experiences of both veterans and everyday heroes. This will be a powerful display of extraordinary young talent reflecting on another generation’s contribution to make their lives, and our world, a better place. The festival will close with Beethoven’s “Eroica” symphony, perhaps his ultimate heroic composition.

The more intimate A Little Afternoon Musik and Chamber Crawl series allow me to share curating responsibilities with our talented musicians. For these series, we present classical music in non-traditional settings around the city. Sometimes even paired with food and drink, these concerts provide a fun and memorable experience for our patrons and musicians alike.

I am looking forward to playing all this wonderful music with the fantastic musicians of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. See you soon!

British music has always held a special place in the hearts of the American people.

For our opening night concert we will travel across the pond to bring you music

written for and inspired by royal and aristocratic life. Sir Edward Elgar’s noble,

dignified and emotional music is a characteristically English voice. His masterwork of

the cello repertoire, the Cello Concerto in E Minor, will be performed by Cincinnati native Coleman Itzkoff who has been praised by The New Yorker for his “flawless technique and keen musicality.” The soaring soundtrack to the award-winning PBS

television drama Downton Abbey will set the stage for our grand finale, Haydn’s

“London” symphony, a fitting final statement from one of the most important – and

fun – symphonic composers. A special guest from the Taft Museum of Art will also share pieces of art from their exquisite collection.

For centuries, composers and artists have drawn inspiration from the beauty of nature.

Originally written for a documentary about vanishing landscapes in Iceland, the music

to Dreamland creates sound worlds that are enchanting, intriguing and beautiful. The

emotive photography of Cincinnati artist Michael Tittel will provide the perfect visual

accompaniment to this work. The second half of the program explores one of the most

recognizable compositions, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. In her first season with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra concertmaster Celeste Golden Boyer, whose playing

has been described as “passionate” and “innately musical,” will be featured on the CCO

premiere of Max Richter’s recomposed version of Vivaldi’s masterwork, intermixed with

the movements from the original. With its fascinating textures and sound, Richter’s

adaptation is a riveting update to this popular piece.

See – and hear – the famous Red Violin at our Summermusik 2018 film screening! This once-in-a-

lifetime evening will allow you to ask questions of the Red Violin’s owner, Elizabeth Pitcairn. Hear

commentary about the film from CCO music director Eckart Preu as you get a sneak peek of the

magnificent “Mendelssohn” Stradivarius that inspired the 1998 Academy Award-winning drama The

Red Violin. The film traces the story of the violin from its maker in 17th century Italy, to an auction room

in modern Montreal, and is the perfect prelude to a weekend of intrigue, enchantment and musical

delights as the famous instrument visits Cincinnati.

Please be aware: This film is rated R and not appropriate for little movie buffs.

SELECTION TO BE ANNOUNCEDMable Lecrone, violinwinner of the CCO and SCPA 2018 Concerto Competition

The legendary “Mendelssohn” Stradivarius that inspired the film The Red Violin is coming to Cincinnati. The fictionalized voyage of this violin through the centuries

creates a musical blueprint for this concert that will take us to contrasting musical worlds.

Our concert begins in China, one of the stops for the violin, with music by composers

who grew up during the Cultural Revolution when classical music was forbidden.

Elizabeth Pitcairn, who performs on the Red Violin, will be featured on Chen Yi’s

Chinese Folk Dance Suite which calls on the orchestra to vocalize percussive elements

as accompaniment. Elizabeth will then play John Corigliano’s suite of the powerful and

atmospheric Academy Award-winning soundtrack for the film. In the second half we will

feature violinist, Mable Lecrone, winner of the inaugural CCO and SCPA 2018 Concerto Competition. Cincinnati Art Museum’s associate director of interpretive programming Russell Ihrig will share artwork – both on display and from their archives – that traces

the violin’s fascinating journey.

“I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.” – Maya Angelou

Music, whether intimate or epic, has a unique ability to honor heroism. Our season finale concert will

pay tribute to heroes in an evening of impassioned stories and compositions. Opening the concert will

be Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, one of the most powerful and reflective pieces ever written.

Host of NPR’s popular From the Top program, pianist Christopher O’Riley, will join CCO principal

trumpeter Ashley Hall on Shostakovich’s first piano concerto. In a groundbreaking collaboration, the

CCO is proud to be partnering with both the Armed Forces Tickets Association and with four talented

young composers from the Music Resource Center on a world premiere work featuring stories of

struggle, strength and hope. Closing the season will be Beethoven’s favorite work – his “Eroica” or

“hero” symphony – titled to celebrate the memory of a great man as he struggled with hearing loss, but

overcame to create a symphony that marked a turning point in the history of classical music.
