Dear COSMOS Students,
Can you believe it? Our time is up. It seems like just yesterday your parents were here helping you unpack your bags, you were getting covered in whale spit, you saw a great white shark, you were struggling over a riddle, you built a robot, you learned everything there is to know about chocolate, or you pondered over the cosmos at COSMOS. I hope this experience has been everything you’ve hoped it would be. If you were looking for a fun learning experience that went from dawn to dusk, then I’m glad you came.
Even though you are here for just a few weeks, the COSMOS staff puts in so much effort before you arrive on campus to make sure you have an enjoyable, informative, and perhaps unforgettable sum-mer experience. We tell everyone that our students are the cream of the crop and this year, there’s no exception. It’s one thing to read your application; it’s another to meet this intelligent and gifted young mind who plays an instrument, juggles, and has a mean kung-fu kick. I hope for all of you this summer has been a blast; it has been for me and the rest of my staff. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t hear from an instructor, a teacher fellow, a residential advisor, or a guest speaker how impressed they were with your talents and abilities.
I hope you’ve come to not only appreciate the subject matter you’ve studied in the past few weeks, but you’ve also come to enjoy other areas like computer science, molecular biology, astrophysics, organic chemistry, and linear algebra. I hope many of you not only have seen how capable you are of succeeding in college, but you’ve considered what you’d like to focus on in college. If you decide to major in math or science, wonderful! If you don’t, then please continue your interest in math and science in other ways. Please remember how your interest and background in math and science will always fair you well.
Finally, as you leave, remember the friends you’ve made – young and old. You should cherish the relationships you’ve made with your classmates, residential advisors, instructors, teacher fellow, and staff members. You never know where life will take you and it never hurts to have a friend along the way. COSMOS is not only about math and science; it’s an enriching and empowering summer experi-ence that makes you feel comfortable about the choices you make and the person you are. Here at COSMOS, we embrace our differ-ences and encourage your love for math and science. Of all the things I hope for, my greatest hope is that you will leave this program feel-ing more confident, more knowledgeable, and more able to face the challenges ahead of you. I believe in all of you. I hope you believe in yourselves too.
Best wishes to you, Dr. Nafeesa OwensCOSMOS DirectorUC Santa Cruz
