Square Chapel TrustGeneral Information for Candidates

Square Chapel is a Grade II* listed building in the centre of Halifax which has been saved and restored by Square Chapel Trust. The Trustees are a group of local people with the vision of developing the building as a Centre for the Arts. During the early part of the 1990’s, numerous trusts, foundations and public income sources ensured that Square Chapel, the last Square Church in Britain, was saved and kept open as an Arts Centre for the benefit of the public.

Since then we have raised almost 2 million pounds of capital funding, which has transformed Square Chapel into a functional and beautiful space, and with local commitment and enthusiasm for the project being so overwhelming, the organisation has not only survived, but positively thrived.

Square Chapel today is a fully fledged Arts Centre which programmes over 300 professional arts events per year, as well as running workshops, master classes and over 100 community events. With funding only for a small but growing staff team, the Trust works by running the whole organisation with the assistance of over 150 enthusiastic volunteers. This is a remarkable achievement, and an example of what can be done with low administration costs.

Our continued growth has meant that we are now literally growing out of our skin, so we have plans in place to build an extension to our current building. This will include another performance space, a bigger café/bar, and altogether better facilities for our customers, staff and volunteers. In 2010 we also reshaped Square Chapel’s organisational structure in preparation for the new building, and a copy of this is enclosed.

In 2011, Square Chapel applied to Arts Council England for £3.9 million of lottery funding towards the £5.9 million Cornerstone project.  Cornerstone will transform the current building and create a new extension which will facilitate a second smaller auditorium, cinema and live screening facilities, better access, a welcoming café bar and improved experience for audiences, visitors, artists and volunteers.

Following an announcement in January 2013, we are delighted to report that Arts Council England has approved the application and Square Chapel will receive £3.9 million.  We also have pledges from individuals and trusts and foundations totalling £1,115,000 meaning the campaign is over half way to its overall target.

Plans are underway for the launch of a public campaign in April to raise the remaining balance.  Take a look at our website for the full story and more about the Cornerstone project http://www.squarechapel.co.uk/en/newsdetail/a309
