Dean’s Corner Greetings Berkeleyites,

I know it went by quickly but I hope your cart is full and you are satis-fied with your shopping items as we near the course enrollment dead-lines. While it may have been difficult to commit when you have so many incredible options, now you can get excited about fully immers-ing yourself into your classes – getting to know your professors, form-ing study groups, and digging deeply into the course material. Remem-ber there is always next semester and for many of you - many semesters to come.

For my BK first years, Damaris will be eagerly anticipating your arrival TODAY with your course schedule signed and in hand well before the 5pm deadline. I suggest turning your schedule in sooner rather than later, avoiding the pitfalls that are inevitable when we wait until the last minute.

I would be remiss if I didn’t congratulate the BK Class of 2020 on their epic Capture the Flag game win (AGAIN) last Monday. You all were awesome and it was super fun to watch! It is Jackson, Caiden, and Ma-son’s favorite activity of the school year, they can’t stop talking about it! Thanks for letting them play!

I am so excited for all of you as you embark on what I hope is a great semester for all of us!

COURSE SCHEDULES DUE THIS WEEK

Course schedules must be sealed online, printed, and signed by appropriate advisers before being submitted to the Berkeley Dean’s Office. Secure necessary appointments with advisers early on!

The deadline on each of the dates listed below is 5:00pm sharp. Schedules submitted at 5:01pm are late. Students submitting a late schedule are fined $50 and lose the privi-lege to elect courses Cr/D/F.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Oncology Undergraduate Student Research Project

Dr. Lajos Pusztai, the Director of Breast Cancer Translational Research at the Yale Cancer Center, is interested in getting undergraduate students more involved in the Breast Center and clinical research. We hope to pair student researchers with a Breast Oncology Faculty mentor. Students would work with their mentor on a research project over the course of the semester or school year. Students would not only have the opportunity to learn more about clinical research and breast cancer but also forge meaningful relationships with their physician mentors. We ask that students commit to at least 5 hours per week of research. This is an un-paid position, but we believe that it is great opportunity for students to gain valua-ble research experience and connect with a physician mentor.

If interested please send a resume/CV, a brief paragraph explaining any previous research experience and your interest in the project, and a list of your other com-mitments for the semester to Amelia Trant, Student Research Project Coordinator at amelia.trant@yale.edu.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity in Gynecology We are looking for an undergraduate research assistant to help with a project looking at low-income women’s access to menstrual products. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain clinical research experience. The research assistant’s primary role would be recruiting patients in the clinic for the study. However, the research assistant could be involved will other aspects of the project as well, including data analysis and writing up findings if they wish. We ask that the research assistant commit to at least 5 hours per week of research time. It is an unpaid position, but we believe that this project would be a great opportunity for a student to grow as a researcher and learn more about women’s health. SUPPORT FOR FRESHMEN IN STEM FIELDS THROUGH STARS

The STARS I Program at Yale supports underrepresented freshmen in STEM fields. Through STARS, a small group of freshmen are matched to an upper-classman mentor with similar interests. The mentor provides guidance and support throughout the school year. STARS also organized academic, social, and career-oriented events for STARS freshman. Half-Tuition Scholarships

Yale Summer Session in New Haven offers half tuition scholarships to Yale College students on financial aid. These scholarships may be used for a maximum of two courses (with a 2-credit maximum) in New Haven, online, or for a faculty led program abroad.

International Summer Award (ISA)

The ISA is available for students who receive financial aid during the aca-demic year for one summer study abroad experience. Students who have already used an ISA in a previous summer and would like to attend a YSS program abroad will receive a half tuition scholarship for up to a total of 2 credits.
