History

George Bernard Shaw once wrote, “There is no love sincerer than the love of

food.” It was this love that guided Giorgio DeLuca, a school teacher turned

cheese merchant, and Joel Dean, a business manager at a publisher, to create

a place that would offer customers a sumptuous celebration of food and a

venue to experience all of the pleasures that cooking and eating can bring. The

original DEAN & DELUCA opened for business in September 1977 in SoHo,

then an edgy artist and warehouse district in lower Manhattan, at the corner

of Prince and Greene streets. The original store was designed to evoke a turn

of the century food department, replete with ceiling fans spinning over a vast

array of products that lined the soaring white walls of this enchanted emporium.

“We were the first to bring in radicchio,” recalls Giorgio DeLuca, “the first to

sell balsamic vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes and dried mushrooms. In those early

days I went out of my way to establish extra virgin olive oil ... everyone who

came into the store got a taste.”

DEAN & DELUCA quickly became a “not to be missed” destination for food

loving New Yorkers and tourists alike. And it was soon obvious more space than

the overcrowded 2,600 square feet would be needed.

In 1986, a small manufacturing company and an army/navy store agreed to

vacate 10,000 square feet of street level space at the corner of Broadway and

Prince Street. It was the perfect size and the ideal location. Jack Ceglic, an

artist and one of DEAN & DELUCA’s founding partners, was responsible for

redesigning the location around the concept of an outdoor marketplace.

There was a neo-classical, minimalist look to it all - massive, exposed columns,

Carrarra marble floors, white tile walls, stainless steel shelving and display

cases. Classical music still resonates throughout the store as customers shop

for everything from thyme to truffles. The new DEAN & DELUCA opened

October 6, 1988 to rave reviews.

Today

Over its history, DEAN & DELUCA has earned a reputation as an icon of New York

City culture and lifestyle. Revered as a hub for the discovery of new culinary trends

and little known culinary traditions, DEAN & DELUCA is the only brand that has the

cultural status and global brand awareness to be the defining brand in gourmet food

retail around the world.

Since our initial store opening, DEAN & DELUCA has expanded its locations in New

York City; Washington D.C.; Charlotte, North Carolina; Leawood, Kansas and Napa

Valley, California. In addition, several international locations have opened in Japan,

Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, The Middle East and most recently, Singapore.

Located at Orchard Central, in the heart of Singapore, the store offers the

cosmopolitan New York lifestyle through the indulgence of handcrafted gourmet

fare served at the café as well as the international array of artisanal products which

include cheese and charcuterie.

i talian cheese plateOur Italian Cheese Plate will open your eyes to

a whole new world of wonderful flavor. Trugole,

an Asiago-style cow’s-milk cheese from the Alto-

Adige region, has a creamy texture and a fresh,

fruity and grassy flavor. Taleggio, with its salt-

crystal-studded crust, has a strong aroma with a

comparatively mild flavor and fruity tang. Brigante

is a mild, semi-firm sheep’s-milk cheese that is

perfect for melting into or over pasta dishes.

Reggiano has a tremendous flavor that

makes it a superb table cheese. Try it

with a hunk of crusty bread, where its

combination of nutty, salty and sweet

Esti Pitted Kalamata OlivesRich and fruity Kalamata olives from Greece are

allowed to ripen naturally before being handpicked

in November and December, and cured in brine

and red wine vinegar.

We scoured France looking for a distinctive gift. About 40 miles east of Paris, we discovered a

Coulommiers—a Brie-type cheese that has the color of freshly churned butter and a soft

mushroom-y flavor with hints of sweet almond in the winter and chives in the spring. In

the Basque region, we found a semi-dry Petit Ardi Gasna Lait Cru—a sheep’s-milk

cheese with a slightly sweet, nutty flavor, somewhat like Manchego. And in

Aquitane, we came across a Picandine Pico Affine—a Camembert-style

goat’s-milk cheese that is insanely creamy and perfectly aged.

Plum is a sweet accompaniment to strong, soft

cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Fig spread is

best with mild, delicate cheeses like goat’s or
