• Ledthedevelopment,execution,andrevisionofastrategicplancomprisingsixVisionBuilding Blocks. The strategic plan can be found under the “College” tab via thefollowinglink:www.engineering.und.edu.

• Led the fundraising of approximately $45 million to support the major initiatives oftheCollegeofEngineeringandMines.

• Secured the necessary resources, primarily from private donors, to construct a newengineering building, the Collaborative Energy Complex. Dedication was held onOctober14,2016.

• Established the “Big Ideas Gym (B.I.G.)” in the new building to promote creativity,

innovation,andinterdisciplinarycollaborationamongstudents.

• Secured funding for more than 40 renovation projects to improve the college’sphysicalenvironmentsandinfrastructure.

• Led the efforts to name the Harold Hamm School of Geology and GeologicalEngineeringwithintheCollegeofEngineeringandMines.

• Establishednewendowedprofessorshipstotalingmorethan $9.5millionandincreasedstudentscholarshipendowmentby83%.

• Established two new academic and research units: Department of PetroleumEngineering(2011)andtheInstituteforEnergyStudies(2012).

• The number of faculty positions has increased by about 50% and staff/engineerspositionshavegrownbymorethan60%between2008and2016.

• Annualresearchexpenditureincreasedbyapproximately100%between2008and2012.

• Distanceeducationenrollmenthasseenmorethan130%growthandtotal enrollmentin the college has increased by approximately 90%since2008.

• IncollaborationwithNorthDakotaStateUniversityandtheMedicalSchoolatUND,thefirstjointgraduateprograminBiomedicalEngineeringwasestablishedin2016.

• Created several partnershipswith industry and established an active Executive Boardthat comprises senior-level industry leaders who have the experience and vision toadvisetheDeanandhelpguidetheCollege’sstrategicdirections.

• Changed thedesignationof the “School of Engineering andMines” to the “College ofEngineering and Mines” to allow the creation of schools under the collegeumbrella,withadditionaloptionsofplacingfutureprogramswithinthoseschools.

• Established new service offices to support students and faculty including: SolbergFamilyStudentSuccessCenter,Financial&GrantServices,andITServices.

• Implemented several initiatives to enhance student experience and improve retentionand graduation rate. These initiatives include Living Learning Community, PeerMentorship, IndustryMentorship, Alumni Perspective Series, Student Success Center,andnumerousopportunitiesforstudentstomeetwiththeDean.

• Established the Diverse Leadership Development Program to serve as the training

groundforjuniorandmid-careerfacultymemberswhoaspiretoleadershippositionsinthe College and beyond. The program is also expected to enhance diversity in theCollegeLeadership.

• Established the Student Advisory Board and the Staff Advisory Board to ensure activeandopencommunicationbetweenthedeanandstudentsandstaff,respectively.

• LedtheCollegetobeamongthefirst30engineeringcollegesinthenationtoimplementthe Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) in cooperation with the NationalAcademyofEngineering.

• Supported several initiatives to enhance diversity among faculty, staff, and studentsincludingdiversitytrainingandawarenessactivities,outreachprogramstoattractNativeAmericanstudents,andgrantactivitiestoenhancediversityamongfaculty.

SELECTEDACCOMPLISHMENTSASCSECHAIRMANATSMU(2001–2008)

• The CSE Department was ranked by US News and World Report among the topcomputerengineeringgraduateprogramsinthenation(Top50).

• The CSE Department and SMU were designated as a National Center of AcademicExcellenceinInformationAssuranceEducationbyNSA.

• The CSE Department received ABET accreditation in both Computer Engineering andComputerScienceprograms.

• Creatednewundergraduateandgraduateprograms.At theundergraduate level, newtracks in: Bioinformatics, Game Development, General, Hardware, Networking,Research, Software Engineering, and Security were created. New MS program inSecurityEngineeringandDoctorofEngineeringprogram inSoftwareEngineeringwerecreatedin2005and2007,respectively.OnsiteExecutiveMaster’sprogramsinSoftwareEngineering and Security Engineering were successfully offered to industry includingLockheedMartin,Raytheon,andL3Communications.AcustomizedprograminSoftwareEngineering was launched for out-of-state industry using combination of distancelearning and executive-style lectures. Several graduate certificates in SoftwareEngineeringandSecurityandInformationAssurancewerealsodeveloped.

• Createdmanyopportunitiesforthedevelopmentandtrainingoffacultyandstaff.Thetraining areas included: grant writing, successful teaching, time management,communicationandlisteningskills,conflictresolution,andteamwork.

• All faculty and staff were involved in a strategic planning effort that was revisitedannually.Anewassessmentplanforthedepartmentwasintroducedin2002.

• Severalfulltimefacultymembers,researchassociates,visitingprofessors,postdoctors,andparttimefacultymemberswerehired.Amentorshipprogramforjuniorfacultywasalsoestablished.

• EstablishedtheIndustryAdvisoryBoard(IAB)in2001.TheIABevolvedintoaveryactivebodyof industry supporters thatwasorganized intoanexecutivecommitteeand fourother committees. The IAB provided help and support in the following four areas:branding andmarketing; research; student programs; and technology and curriculum.Among its many activities, the IAB provided funding opportunities for faculty andstudents, mentorship to students, internships, faculty training, and feedback on thecurriculumandotherdepartmentactivities.

• Developed several international programs, funded by theUSAgency for InternationalDevelopment,tocollaborategloballywithuniversitiesinMexicoandtheMiddleEast.

• Other accomplishments include: the publication of a departmental newsletter—CSExpress, the launch of distinguished lecture series and weekly colloquium; andrevivingcontactswithCSEalumni.

• Assumedseveralleadershiprolesatthecollegeanduniversitylevelsincluding:chairofthesearchcommitteeoftheGeorgeR.BrownendowedchairinMechanicalEngineering,chairofcollegepromotion&tenurecommittee,andvicechairoftheSMUAssociateVicePresidentofResearchsearchcommitteeandamemberoftheSMUProvostsearchcommittee.
