What originally started out as a smallscale Jazz evening for the Senior SchoolJazz Band has grown into an eventmuch larger than anticipated. I say thiswith great delight because I am thrilledthat we have so much Jazz & Bluestalent on our own doorstep, allowingus to house such an ambitious event. It is important to encourage andsupport our young musicians and whatbetter way to do so than in this relaxedand fun atmosphere, where they canbe immersed in some great music andbe inspired by some great musicians. It’s fantastic that the whole Dean CloseCommunity can come together forsuch an event and that all threeschools can enjoy this breadth oftalent.

A big thank you to Dave Thompsonand our technical crew who never fail

to rise to the challenge, no matterwhat I throw at them – although theymight now run in the oppositedirection when they see me comingnext! Thanks must also go to KarenCoward for co-ordinating the stalls, themarketing team, especially TraceyColbert-Smith for her great foresightand support throughout this event, and our Estates department for theirhelp in setting up this event. I alsowant to thank all our musicians andtheir very patient teachers - the manyhours of practise will be worth it!.

Enjoy the music, the stalls, soak up theatmosphere and have a great time andremember, as George Gershwin said “Life is a lot like Jazz..... it’s betterwhen you improvise”.

1.45-2.00 Combo MagicBasie’s BarCome and listen to the Boys ‘conjour up’ some great saxsounds. This quartet of Sixth Form saxophonists know howto capture the laid back feel of the Blues and will feel right athome playing in Basie’s Bar.

1.45-2.15 DCPS Swing BandDuke’s DinerDCPS Swing Band is not a conventional swing band! Withflutes and clarinets, alongside trumpets and saxes, they workon music especially arranged for them – Glenn Miller,Pachelbel’s Canon and a tune from CBeebies! Nowhere elsein the world will you find a swing set like it!

2.00-2.30 It Takes 2Basie’s BarHusband and wife duo, Justin & Renny Slade, take us on a‘Blues Cruise’ featuring many great Blues numbers from SkipJames and Woodie Guthrie to the Rolling Stones.

2.15-3.05 SwungDuke’s Diner‘Swung’ is a six-piece band made up of teachers from DCPS.They have great energy and enthusiasm (as their namesuggests) and enjoy performing some great Jazz Standardssuch as ‘Fly me to the Moon’ and ‘Summertime’ but are alsoequally at home experimenting with more current coverssuch as Emeli Sande.

2.30-3.15 The Piano HourDizzy’s DenThis slot features some of DCS’s top Jazz pianists tinkling theivories. Be dazzled by the virtuosic treatment of George

Gershwin’s ‘I’ve got Rhythm’, or hypnotised by the hauntingsounds of ‘Autumn Leaves’.

2.45-3.15 Close HarmonyBasie’s Bar‘Close Harmony’ is a pupil led mixed vocal group comprisingstudents from the Fourth Form right through to the UpperSixth. It was instigated by Oscar Osicki who wanted anopportunity for top singers to stretch themselves with theclose harmonies and challenging rhythms that Jazz oftenprovides. They have a wide repertoire of songs ranging frommusical numbers such as ‘Under the Sea’ to the ever faithfulJazz standards such as ‘Blue Moon’.

3.15-4.00 Micro-JazzersDizzy’s DenThey may be young for their years, but their enthusiasm ishuge. ‘Micro-Jazzers’ showcases DCPS’s growing Jazz talent. From trumpet and sax solos to vocal numbers, the variety ishuge and an entertaining afternoon is guaranteed.

3.15-3.45 Boozey BluesBasie’s BarWhat better place to listen to some classic blues guitar thanin Basie’s Bar? Join Sixth Former students from DCS as theycapture the laid back feel of the Deep South with numberssuch as ‘George’s Best’ and ‘Small Talk’.

3.15-3.35 DCS ComboDuke’s DinerThis young combo of Year 9 and 10 pupils have no fearwhen it comes to improvising. Although a fledgling group, their ‘have a go’ attitude produces some exciting andchallenging solos and, best of all, no two performances willever be the same! From the latin grooves of ‘WatermelonMan’ to the rock riffs of ‘Linus and Lucy’, variety is theirforte.

3.45-4.15 Jazzy Jules Basie’s BarFlautist, singer, saxophonist - are there any limits to thislady’s talents? Join Julie Kent as she thrills her audience with

PROGRAMME OF EVENTSlilting Bossas and edgy rock grooves. Once there, you maynever leave!

3.45-4.20 Soul / R&B HourDuke’s DinerIt’s the return of ‘The Commitments’. Recreating the classicSoul/R&B sounds of Ottis Redding and Aretha Franklin, theseDean Close students will take you on a trip down memorylane with classic numbers such as ‘Mustang Sally’, ‘Try aLittle Tenderness’ plus many more.

4.00-4.15 DCPS Chamber ChoirDizzy’s DenDCPS Chamber Choir consists of some of the finest femalesingers in the Prep School, who have been especially selectedto perform in this prestigious group. The choir enjoy theirclose harmony singing, occasional dance moves and arebecoming real experts at ‘Doo-Wah’s’!

& DCS Girls’ Vocal EnsembleThis ensemble was instigated in September to cater for girlsfrom the Senior School who want to sing songs of a lighterrepertoire in two and three parts. It is made up of some verymusical students, mostly from the Fourth Form (with oneexception!) who have very strong views about the sorts ofsongs they like! They do like a challenge, however, and hopeto entertain you with arrangements of some jazz songs theyhave been preparing especially for the festival.

4.30-5.00 Open MicDizzy’s DenAudience participation time. Provide a lead sheet and theband will provide the accompaniment. Don’t miss thisopportunity to play with a top rhythm section. So shake thedust off that sax, test the vocal cords and come along andjoin the fun.

4.30-4.40 DCS BarbershopBasie’s BarThis unlikely group of DCS male teachers have beenassembled especially for the Festival. Having receivedspecialist training from vocal coach, Ben Sawyer, don’t miss

their unique performances of ‘George Jones’ and ‘Stand by me’.

4.30-4.40 Dixieland ParadeThe QuadNo Jazz Festival is complete without a taste of the authenticstuff. Dixieland, or Trad Jazz as it’s known, originated in NewOrleans and is one of the earliest styles of Jazz music. Thestyle combines earlier brass band marches, Ragtime andBlues within a polyphonic, improvised texture, but quitesimply – it’s just great toe-tapping stuff.

4.45-5.30 DCS Jazz BandDuke's DinnerThis vibrant 20 piece band never fails to entertain. Withtheir eclectic mix of Jazz standards, Blues and even a LatinTango this band will definitely get audiences grooving.Watch out for their 'hot off the press' vocal arrangement of'Skyfall'.

5.30-6.30 Ashok Gupta and Jonny Faull DuoDuke’s DinerWhat better way to conclude the Festival than to invite backODs Ashok and Jonny. Having graduated from Leeds Collegeof Music in 2011, Jonny is currently performing and teachingas a freelance saxophonist based in Leeds. As well as beingheavily involved with the exciting jazz/funk scene in Leeds,Jonny is also regularly touring with the UK Rat Pack VegasSpectacular Show in theatres nationally and abroad. Ashokhas worked as an organist at Westminster Abbey, TheChapel Royal and St Paul’s Cathedral; as a repetiteur forGlyndebourne Opera, English National Opera and DeNederlandse Opera; and as a continuo player with the BBCPhilharmonic, the Manchester Camerata and the SalzburgMozarteum Orchestra. As well as having several BBC Radio 3broadcasts in the bag, Ashok loves experimenting with Jazzand is thrilled to return to Dean Close for this Festival and toexplore Jazz with fellow enthusiasts. They will be joined byAndy Rushton (Bass) and Jon Green (Drums) and willperform a selection of their favourite Jazz standards, inspiredby legendary saxophonists such as Cannonball Adderley andSonny Stitt.
