Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971)

The Rite of Spring; Concerto for Two Pianos; Circus Polka; Tango; Madrid

Marc-André Hamelin, Leif Ove Andsnes

Shortly before its notorious Paris ballet premiere in 1913, this was essentially how The Rite of Spring first saw the light of day: Leif Ove Andsnes and Marc-André Hamelin recapture the heady, visceral thrill which must have been in the air when Stravinsky sat down at the piano with Debussy to create this landmark of modernism.

Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918)

Songs, Volume 4

Lucy Crowe, Christopher Maltman, Malcolm Martineau, Jennifer France, Lucy Wakeford

A recital of songs spanning Debussy’s entire compositional career, from ‘Tragédie’ written in early 1881, to his very last song, ‘Noël des enfants qui n’ont plus de maisons’ from the end of 1915. We bid adieu to this series in company of Lucy Crowe and, of course, Malcolm Martineau.

Arcangelo, Johathan Cohen

No fewer than three Bach’s—father and two sons—and three wonderful versions of the Magnificat written over the course of the eighteenth century: one setting very familiar, the other two much less so. CDA68157

Missa Confitebor tibi Domine

Yale Schola Cantorum, Bruce Dickey, Liuwe Tamminga, David Hill

A journey from twenty-first-century Connecticut to late sixteenth-century Rome: Yale Schola Cantorum presents a programme of quasi-Baroque richness in which Palestrina’s a cappella Mass is imaginatively interspersed with instrumental interludes for cornett and organ.

Sir Arthur BLISS (1891-1975)

The Beatitudes; Introduction and Allegro; God Save the Queen

Emily Birsan, Ben Johnson, BBC Symphony Chorus, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis

Excelling in recordings of Delius, Elgar, and Holst, Sir Andrew Davis here presents a spirited programme of works by Sir Arthur Bliss. It follows a recording of Morning Heroes that made the top recommendations of 2015; likewise recorded in surround-sound, it conveys the energy of both the exceptional soloists and the impeccable BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. To complete the album are an arrangement of the national anthem having all the flair that made the tenure of Bliss as Master of the Queen’s Music distinctive and successful, as well as the virtuosic Introduction and Allegro, dedicated to Stokowski and inspired by the powerful sound of American orchestras post-World War I.

Dag WIRÉN (1905-1986)

Sinfonietta, Op. 7a; Serenade, Op. 11; Symphony No. 3, Op. 20; Divertimento, Op. 29

Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Rumon Gamba

Bright and lively music from the Swedish composer Dag Wirén is unveiled here in surround-sound by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Rumon Gamba, only a few years after the completion of their Grammy-nominated and highly acclaimed series devoted to the neglected orchestral treasures of Vincent d’Indy. Other, lesser-known works on the album similarly showcase a composer of fascinating range, who could write light and humorous pieces such as the Sinfonietta and the lively Symphony No. 3, as well as powerful, rhythmical, and serious works, of which the later Divertimento is an example.

Enrique GRANADOS (1867-1916)

Goyescas; Ochos valses poéticos; Allegro de concierto; Zapateado

Xiayin Wang

A pianist of keen musicality and sweeping virtuosity, Xiayin Wang returns to solo repertoire with this fascinating exploration of works by Enrique Granados, revealing a technically challenging and complex musical language, yet full of colour and emotional intensity. Across the repertoire featured here, this album reveals the genius of Granados, a composer of wide contrast whose music deserves to be heard more often.

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750)

The Contest between Phoebus and Pan – Secular Cantatas, Volume 9

Geschwinde, ihr wirbelnden Winde, BWV 201; Auf, schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten, BWV 207a

Joanne Lunn, Robin Blaze, Nicholas Phan, Katsuhiko Nakashima, Christian Immler, Dominik Wörner, Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

Unlike the majority of Johannes Sebastian Bach’s secular cantatas Geschwinde, ihr wirbelnden Winde, BWV 201 may well have been composed for Bach’s own sake, rather than some political or festive occasion: the message conveyed in the work can be interpreted as a defence of Bach’s own artistry and musical attitudes against the trend of the time towards easier fare. Subtitling the cantata ‘dramma per musica’, Bach sets an episode from Greek mythology in which Phoebus (Apollo) and Pan enter into a musical contest.

Alexander BORODIN (1833-1887): Quartet No. 2

Escher String Quartet

‘Full-blooded quartet playing in the grand, classic manner: extrovert and eloquent’ is how the Escher String Quartet’s recording of Mendelssohn’s first and fourth quartets were described in BBC Music Magazine. After completing the three-disc Mendelssohn cycle – and earning further accolades, including a nomination for the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2017 – the quartet now returns with a programme that leaves plenty of opportunity for their special brand of playing. The three quartets gathered on this disc form a catalogue of unforgettable tunes and of emotions ranging from nostalgia to the most infectious joy.

Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73; Haydn Variations; Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80; Hungarian Dances Nos 6, 7 & 5 (orch. by Thomas Dausgaard)

Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Thomas Dausgaard

On a number of previous recordings the 40-odd members of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard have shed a new light on the Romantic symphonic repertoire, with performances described as ‘tight’, ‘invigorating’, ‘transparent’ and ‘thrilling’. Complete cycles of the symphonies of Schumann and Schubert have appeared alongside individual discs with music by Dvořák, Bruckner and Tchaikovsky, as well as a recording of Johannes Brahms’s First Symphony, released in 2012. Five years later and the team’s recording of Symphony No. 2 is finally released. It’s followed by the Haydn Variations and the hugely popular set of Hungarian Dances for piano, here in orchestrations by Thomas Dausgaard.

Alfred SCHNITTKE (1934-1998): Psalms of Repentance

Arvo PÄRT (b.1935): Magnificat; Nunc dimittis

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Kaspars Putniņš

Schnittke’s large-scale Psalms of Repentance were composed in 1988 for the celebrations of the millennium of Christianity in Russia. The texts come from an anonymous collection of poems for Lent, written in the 16th century, and in his settings Schnittke engages with the traditions of chant-based Orthodox liturgical music. Schnittke’s Psalms are combined with two shorter works by Arvo Pärt: composed in a quasi-liturgical style, and with its serene atmosphere, his Nunc dimittis forms a natural counterpart to the Magnificat even though the two were written more than a decade apart.

Ottorino RESPIGHI (1879-1936)

Vetrate di chiesa; Il tramonto; Trittico botticelliano

Anna Caterina Antonacci, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, John Neschling

In their acclaimed series of Ottorino Respighi’s orchestral music, John Neschling and Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège have transported listeners. The present disc brings together three of Respighi’s more popular works. Scored for small orchestra, his Botticellian Triptych has all the freshness of the famous paintings of the Renaissance master. Subtitled ‘poemetto lirico’ Il tramonto was originally composed for voice and string quartet, but is often performed with a larger complement of strings, as here. Soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci breathes impassioned life into Shelley’s Romantic poem The Sunset (translated into Italian) in which love is brutally cut short by death. The disc closes with the four Church Windows.

The four-movement symphonic poem The Bells (‘Kolokola’), Op. 35, based on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, for solo voices, choir and orchestra, was composed by Rachmaninov in 1913, and the three Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 from 1940 was the last completed work by the composer, who died in 1943. These outstanding performances of significant compositions of early 20th century symphonic repertoire are conducted by the inimitable Mariss Jansons.

Continuing their acclaimed live series on Coro, the Handel and Haydn Society presents one of Haydn’s early Sturm und Drang ‘storm and stress’ symphonies – No. 26 in D minor. More commonly known as ‘Lamentatione’ because of its association with Easter week, Haydn incorporates an old plainsong chant of the Passion of Christ juxtaposing it against the furious opening theme. The later Paris Symphony No. 86, with its unusual off-tonic exposition, shows Haydn at his most inventive and expansive; richly scored it tests the performers’ skill and technique to the limit.

Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto has been consistently rated one of the best loved pieces of classical music. In 2015 it was named number one in Classic FM’s Ultimate Hall of Fame. Mozart’s Piano Concerto marked a shift in tone towards a new, more mature style for the composer. He helped to redefine the piano concerto as a sophisticated and expressive artform, rather than a form of polite public entertainment. These live recordings were conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin while he was Principal Guest Conductor (2008-14) and his close relationship with the Orchestra is apparent.

Gustav MAHLER (1860-1911)

Symphony No. 1Including bonus interview with Riccardo Chailly on Gustav Mahler‘s Symphony No. 1

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Riccardo Chailly

Gustav Mahler‘s Symphony No. 1 is an incomprehensible wonder of music history, rigorously peculiar, disturbingly new, and timelessly modern. From the connotation of militarily marches to folk songs, from dance and popular music to animal sounds: everything has its place in Mahler‘s symphonic world, as shown in the first symphony. Composed over the course of just a few months at the beginning of 1888 in Leipzig, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 is a true musical awakening. Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig bring Mahler’s sounds of nature to life in a riveting performance. Recorded at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig in January 2015.

Royal Ballet Principal Marianela Nuñez delights as Princess Aurora, with Vadim Muntagirov as her Prince Florimund, in this performance of a timeless classic. Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet’s repertory, with its vibrant sets and glittering costumes and featuring such iconic moments as the Rose Adage, the Vision pas de deux, the exuberant wedding celebration and the charming fairy-tale guests, all danced to Tchaikovsky’s richly layered music – one of the most beloved ballet scores of all time. This Sleeping Beauty captures all the magic and virtuosity that ballet has to offer.
