DEADWOOD MEETING PLANNER
outDoor aDventure
The Black Hills are an unsurpassed travel destination because the region’s outdoor activities are as diverse as the people who visit here. Name your passion, and you’ll likely find avid fans who share your interests in the Black Hills. No matter what you do, Deadwood is close to the action.
SummerBicyclists enjoy the 109-mile Mickelson Trail that snakes through the most scenic sections of the Black Hills. Hikers, backpackers and horseback riders ply the 100-mile Centennial Trail which runs from Bear Butte State Park to Wind Cave National Park. In fact, the Black Hills National Forest has some 450 miles of hiking trails that offer a wide range of challenges. Rock climbing? People come from all over the world to scale the Needles or Devil’s Tower.
Off-highway vehicle riders have 550 miles of designated in the Black Hills National Forest. Many are connected by nearly 500 miles of all-vehicle-access roads, which together provide abundant opportunities for OHV outings. Road bikers, some 500,000 of them, come to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally each August.
How about golf? The Black Hills are home to 16 public and private golf courses, including the new Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club eight miles from Deadwood. In addition, there are geo caching opportunities, ghost towns to explore and historic cemeteries that tell the story of the Black Hills past.
If your idea of the great outdoors is more sedate, there are half a dozen wineries and tasting rooms in the Black Hills. Sit back, sip
a cool glass and enjoy the scenery. Deadwood has two wineries, and nearby Hill City has four.
WinterAs the weather turns cold and snow starts falling, the outdoor fun actually heats up. Skiers, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts come to the Northern Black Hills seeking deep powder and exciting slopes. Mystic Miner and Terry Peak ski areas are half an hour from Deadwood.
Terry Peak Ski Area has 450 acres of ski terrain and 1,000 feet of vertical drop, making it the biggest ski area in the heartland. Five chairlifts, including three high-speed quads, serve the facility with 20 miles of trails. Mystic Miner Ski Resort at Deer Mountain offers a diverse ski terrain that includes groomed trails, powder runs, glade runs and uncrowded, wide-open slopes. Its Zero Gravity tube park is a popular family attraction.
More than 350 miles of snowmobile trails are marked, mapped and groomed every winter by the state of South Dakota. Some of those trails actually pass right through Deadwood. Area resorts offer snowmobile rentals. You can also rent cross-country skis, and the Mickelson Trail office has snowshoes that people can check out free of charge.

DEADWOOD CONVENTION HOTELS & VENUES
Located in the beautiful railroad area of the historic Deadwood district, the Martin & Mason Hotel and the adjoining Iron Horse Inn have long been a haven for weary travelers. Directly across the street from the Adams Museum and the historic railroad depot, the Martin & Mason’s 1898 ballroom and meeting rooms are within walking distance to everything the historic area has to offer.
Constructed in 1893, the hotel began a thirteen year renovation in 1995. It’s chiseled stone façade makes it one of Deadwood’s most distinctive historic buildings. Victorian antiques and lighting offer guests a chance to truly feel America’s turn of the century era. Each of the eight hotel rooms are decorated individually, some with striking views of Mount Moriah, the historic Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad and the Adams Museum. Weddings, meetings, receptions and conferences can be catered in house. The nineteen economical hotel rooms of the adjoining Iron Horse Inn offer a reasonable alternative to larger groups, making a total of twenty-seven rooms available. Other downtown hotels are steps away.
The Lee Street Station Diner on the first floor consistently provides Deadwood guests with the most popular meals in the historic downtown area. Open 24 hours, the Wooden Nickel Casino offers over 80 liberal slots for guests and is a popular local establishment.

DEADWOOD HOTELS
HIstorIc Bullock Hotel
Step back in time and walk through the very same corridors, rooms and hallways that Deadwood’s first Sheriff, Seth Bullock, walked more than 100 years ago. Bullock and his business partner, Sol Star, built the stone-facade hotel in 1894-96 from a converted warehouse. Bullock was also a major builder and booster for Deadwood as it grew from a mining camp to prosperous city.
Treat yourself to 19th century history and elegance combined with 21st century amenities. Bully’s, the hotel’s bar and restaurant, is named for Bullock’s friend, Teddy Roosevelt. This intimate restaurant features a beautiful large fireplace that is typical of the 1895 period and decorated with “potter’s tiles” and carved woodwork. Emerald green walls play host to several period artwork pieces. The well-appointed first-floor casino features slot machines ranging from penny slots to $5 machines.
The Bullock has been fully restored from top to bottom, appointed with the same Victorian touches that greeted well-heeled visitors in Bullock’s day. Lodging accommodations include the Luxury Jacuzzi Suites with king beds overlooking Deadwood’s Main Street, as well as classic
king, queen or full rooms and two-queen rooms. Although Seth Bullock has been dead since 1919, you might get a chance to say hello. A number of well-documented sightings have been reported of Bullock’s ghost walking the halls of the hotel. But not to worry – he’s very friendly.

THINGS TO DO
DeaDwooD alIve/GunslInGers/trIal of Jack mccall
Main Street, DeadwoodStreet theater mixes with history all summer long in Deadwood. The Deadwood Alive Gunslingers – gun-toting actors – recreate the events of Deadwood’s most famous time in 1876 when Wild Bill Hickok was murdered, and his killer Jack McCall was captured on the street and put on trial. The capture occurs at 7:30 p.m. on Main Street in front of the Saloon 10, and the trial starts at 8 p.m. in the Masonic Building down the street, next to the Silverado Gaming Establishment. But the actors stay busy all afternoon. The shooting of Wild Bill is inside the Saloon 10 four times a day. The Gunslinger shootouts are three times a day at various locations on Deadwood Main Steet.

DevIls tower natIonal monument
77 miles west of Deadwood, via Interstate 90 and, U.S. Highway 14 and Wyo. Highway 24
This natural wonder was created millions of years ago when a spike of molten rock pushed through a weak spot in the Earth’s crust, then cooled. When the surrounding countryside eroded away, it left this 1,200-foot monolith standing above the Belle Fourche River Valley. The site is sacred to Native American tribes, and it was the United State’s first national monument. It was popularized in the 1977 film, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

olD style saloon no. 10657 Main Street, Deadwood
The Old Style Saloon No. 10 is a living museum – maybe the only one in the world with a full bar – where you can view historical Western and mining camp artifacts spanning more than 100 years. Kids are welcome until 8:30 p.m. After dark they turn on the fun for adults with live music, cold drinks, casino games and an atmosphere that recalls Deadwood’s early days. For a quieter respite, head upstairs to the Deadwood Social Club restaurant and its rooftop patio. By the way, this is the bar – but not the location – where Wild Bill Hickok was murdered in 1876. Originally named Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon 10, the bar was down the street. You can still see Wild Bill’s “death chair” above the front door.
