Submitted by Michelle Holman Greetings from the Board of Your Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery! We hope that 2020 is good to you and your loved ones. The start of a new year is a good time for a fresh look forward and backward... The latest projects at DPC are taking shape:

In 2019 we installed a garden featuring a wide, curving gravel path with sitting rocks overlooking the river and mountain, with 3 small flower beds on the south side of the driveway with shade-tolerant plants that should bloom and

add beauty for most of the warm seasons. We even have hellebores blooming now, and a sweetbox bush that will provide a sweet, honeysuckle-like scent in the January/ February cold!

Soon we will erect the new Veterans Memorial, which we hope to unveil at Memorial Day ... more on that to come! We also have more landscaping and plants to install for the Ash Scattering Garden and will provide photos as that progresses.

Our efforts to update our website, mapping and bylaws continue as our new Secretary & Webmaster, Andi Shattuck, has taken the reins. The website offers links to upcoming and past events, burials information, history and research resources, and more.

To donate, you may email us, call or use our new, secure "Donate" button on our website and use Paypal, a credit or debit card. You may wish to add a note to specify what your gift will support, such as the Veterans Memorial, landscaping or specific plants, or cleaning headstones.

Thank you for your support and contributions, helping us to honor our heritage and preserve the past! Warmly, The DPC Board of Trustees Toll-Free: 877-964-3345

Somewhere things went wrong, lost without a paddle, social media devil always searching for a battle. What happened to spoken word, taking time for reflection, being unique from the herd, living life for connection. From Mesozoic to Cenozoic, reptilians to mammals,

technology the teeth and humans the enamel. All that we see is in the past, simple light refractions, love and compassion take work, start with inner action. Slowly fading into a world that we have created, fake food fake people, a world fully automated. Creatures with so much potential locked behind screens, choosing the easy option, not following their dreams. Holocene ending after 12,000 years, falling to a hallow scene of shallow memes ringing ear to ear. Once the steps have been taken they cannot be undone, the actions of many always outweigh the one. The epoch of man solidified by a single distinction, destruction for money and things, welcome to the Sixth Extinction Submitted by Jake

New Curmudgeon i hope 2020 is the year we see things clearly. AI has evolved to a point where robotics with a program that enables them to learn from their interaction with the environment, with software that writes itself, writes its own updates and develops its own way of thinking has become autonomous. once that happens, you can't take it apart and figure out what it's done. they "think" and process 1000x faster than us. no one understands how the algorithms work now. they've been improved beyond our understanding. the next logical assumption= they won't need us anymore and they'll produce algorithms that suit them not us. this is not sci-fi. it's an us and them. their decisions are not hampered by moral or ethical guidelines. over thirty countries have signed on to ban autonomous weaponry needless to say, the us china and russia are not among them. there is a a phenomenon called bimorphic resonance that extends beyond, but includes, life forms as we

know them. it has been known as the 100th monkey phenomenon. an animal learning a new trick in,say, deadwood will enable said animals the world over to learn that trick easier than before. in an experiment involving the production of an artificial crystal, subsequent crystals were produced at an increased rate.. beyond the normal range of randomness. everything depends on evolving habits, not fixed laws. i expect this to be the case with AI as well. unhampered by rational or convention this process proceeds exponentially. the big failing in quantum mechanics is in not accounting for the replication of past forms or the notion of temporal process..does not explain the influence of the past on the present..does not have any concept of movement or process or continuity in time. but on a physical level the fact that the lamp looks the same from one moment to the next is because part of the preceding moment is dragged into the next moment and so on. by the same token,

Page 6: Deadwood Ditto February 2020 - Deadwood Trading Post · DEADWOOD DITTO FEBRUARY 2020 Food Coop Order Due by 5:00pm Feb. 9th Sunday Mapleton Food Share 10am-2pm Feb 13th Thursday,

part of the succeeding moment falls (is injected in technical terms) back into the preceding moment...and so on. since the implicate whole in this case is, perhaps, a well known lamp, this image is perpetuated smoothly..like watching a film at 1000 frames a second. an interesting analogy is to compare each moment (for lack of a better term) to the waves in an ocean each wave rises(projection) and falls back (injection) into the whole. the next wave rises and is similar but not the same as the preceding one, having been influenced by the ocean. the wave influences the ocean, the ocean influences the wave. the brain sends the message that the lamp hasn't changed, but it has. that's just part of the illusion that is our reality. Deadwood Food Coop The Deadwood Co-op is a food buying club comprised of Deadwood area members. Established in the 1970’s and run by volunteers, we bring natural, whole, organic, and local foods

to Deadwood. We order six times yearly: January, March, May, July, September, and November. Ordering information can be found in the Deadwood Trading Post under Food Coop tab. If you are a new member you will need the passwords to the catalogues. Contact Cathy Barr (541-964-5371) for those.

I, Neila Crocker, plus my animals (chickens, goats, 2 horses & my dog) are seeking land, preferably with a house, barn and shop space. I really want to stay in the Deadwood community. I have been here for over 15 years. I want to continue being an organic farmer, doing dairy and supporting the farmers

markets. I am an artisan and a musician. I need to find a for-sale-by-owner/rent-to-own, or a sub-divide rent-to-own situation. My current living situation expires in April. I would love to hear from anyone who has a lead or possibility. Also looking for a temporary place to house my horses and goats. Thank you for your consideration.
