ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enables utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact.
The ABB Group of companies operates in approximately 100 countries and employs around 145,000 people.
ABB innovations for changing demands
A complete range of high voltage circuit breakersABB offers the widest range of high voltage circuit breakers on the market. Our portfolio of dead tank circuit breakers ranges from 72.5 kV to 800 kV.
ABB has a long history of developing innovative technologies to address the changing demands of power systems. As these systems continue to evolve, switching solutions must be designed to meet present-day applications as well as anticipate the future state of the grid.

Engineered to reduce switching transients
ABB is proud to offer the type 362PMR-B SF6 power circuit breaker, based on the well-established 362PMI-B platform, for applications requiring closing resistors.
StandardsThe 362PMR-B Dead Tank Circuit Breaker is tested for high transient recovery voltage (TRV) performance, ultimate mechanical endurance and is certified for class C2 capacitive switching.
– ANSI/IEEE C37.09– ANSI/IEEE C37.04– ANSI/IEEE C37.06– ANSI/IEEE C37.06.1
Certifications– ISO 9001– ISO 14001– OHSAS 18001
ApplicationsThe 362PMR-B was designed for:– overhead transmission lines, especially long transmission applications, with a potential for transient overoltage – transformer applications with a potential for inrush current– capacitive switching applications
Type PM circuit breaker familyWith just under 50,000 breakers delivered to date, spanning voltages up to 800 kV, the ABB type PM dead tank circuit breakers remain the most purchased brand in the industry. This is due to their low cost of ownership and strong performance, backed by industry-leading service and support.
Benefits of ABB’s advanced technology
Endurance to reduce extreme transientsThe 362PMR-B circuit breaker is designed with integrated pre-insertion resistors providing overvoltage protection for capacitor bank, transmission line and transformer switching.
Pre-insertion resistors (closing resistors) are used to limit over-voltages in the network during switching operations. The pre-insertion resistors are only used during closing and consist of resistor blocks that are connected in parallel with the breaking chamber. The resistor blocks will close the circuit approximately 8-12 ms before the arcing contacts. Pre-insertion resistors are mainly used at higher system voltages (≥362 kV).
Simple and reliable HMB mechanismEach fully integrated hydraulic mechanism is self lubricating, hermetically sealed from the atmosphere and weather protected, affording excellent reliability and long term stability.
– Longer lifetime and ease of service due to reduced lead content, more interchangeability of parts– Higher reliability due to fewer pump starts – Robust, compact design with non anodized sealing surfaces and a minimum number of moving parts– Simple adaptation to breakers
ABB backs the HMB mechanism with an industry-best 10 year warranty.
Easy installation and retrofit, saving time and money Installation time of approximately 16 hours as the breaker is shipped in only 4 sections (3 pressurized poles with bushing and mechanism attached, and frame with associated control housing).
No external capacitors needed except for short line faultFor short-line fault, the type 362PMR-B does not require any external capacitors up to the maximum rated fault current of 63kA, saving cost, installation time, and further substation space. For special fast-rate-of-rise applications per ANSI/IEEE C37.06.1, the circuit breaker requires no capacitance for the 7% short circuit rating and 2 nF capacitors for the 30% short-circuit current rating.
Enhanced safetyABB supplies shatter-proof composite bushings and ASME pressure vessel code certified tanks. Overpressure relief devices, designed to rupture in case of internal pressure build up, are also included as an enhanced safety feature.

Single-break interrupter with pre-insertion resistorOur single piece high performance puffer interrupter utilizes state-of-the-art technology with dual-motion contacts, allowing for greater reliability. For questions on pre-insertion resistor options, contact the factory.
TanksSingle-piece tanks are ultrasonically cleaned, then leak tested in a vacuum sealed chamber using highly accurate helium mass spectrometer leak detection. Each tank is ASME pressure vessel tested and certified.
Control cubicleABB prides itself on offering generously sized control cubicles at workable heights to vastly improve access to the equipment over its lifetime.
Insulating mediumThe type PMR-B uses SF6 as the insulating medium. ABB has invested in monitoring technology, manufacturing techniques, and innovative designs to reduce SF6 gas leaks.
Features
BushingsABB offers a variety of bushing options, including silicone and porcelain insulators, to meet customer application needs and environmental conditions. ABB utilizes tapered designs where feasible to reduce the SF6 volume and therefore installed inventory in our customer’s fleet.
Bushing current transformersABB utilizes slipover bushing current transformer (BCT) designs for our dead tank product line which allow for cost effective, efficientand safe removal or exchange without removing the bushings.
HMB 4.1 mechanismThe moving contacts of each separate pole unit are driven by a type HMB-4 spring hydraulic mechanism that is mounted at one end of each interrupter tank. Mechanical energy is stored in a column of compression disk springs and is translated hydraulically to the pole’s operating shaft. Spring charge is automatically maintained by the operation of a universal motor and hydraulic pump.

Installation and commissioningThe compact design is ideal for new or existing substation layouts for voltages up to 362 kV. The breaker fits within most existing footprints and can be used to quickly address the need for greater protection for minimal cost.
Those familiar with the PM line of breakers can typically install and commission the breaker within 2 days given a prepared foundation. The pole assemblies are shipped complete with positive SF6 pressure, and are installed on frames with control cabinet on site.
ABB offers supervision, installation, commissioning, and maintenance service on all ABB breakers.
The type 362PMR-B is shipped with completely assembled pole units filled with positive SF6 pressure. For domestic deliveries, all components are transported to the customer on a double-drop, air ride trailer. For non-domestic deliveries, the bushings are removed and packaged for shipping. Weight of gas at shipping pressure is provided with test report.
