From its founding, the Diaconate has been focused on a ministry of charity and service. Deacons were ordained to help the bishop in his role as shepherd and caregiver. Through the centuries deacons have assisted their bishops and enabled the church to serve those most in need. I welcome the Deacons of the Diocese of Oakland to collaborate with me in the holy work of representing Jesus for those who come seeking the Good Shepherd.

I am both honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve the Deacon Community of the Diocese of Oakland as Deacon Board President at the time this directory is published. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a few words of reflection on our community. As a Deacon Community we are a marvelous and mysterious work of the Holy Spirit. When the Permanent Diaconate in the Latin Church was restored through the workings of the Second Vatican Council and formalized by Pope Paul VI, no one could have imagined the synergism that would result from the sacraments of ordination and marriage lived in a deacon couple--a deacon and his wife, ministering among the people of God. Nor did anyone anticipate that married deacons and their wives, unmarried deacons, widows of deacons, widowed deacons, and those who have completed their service in this world would form a community as loving and supporting as ours. Click on the deacon newsletter tab and read the latest edition or an archival edition of our newsletter. Deacon Wives Community

Office of the Diaconate, Diocese of Oakland

The restoration of the permanent diaconate in the Diocese of Oakland originated with the Priests Senate in 1973. Bishop Begin approved the program in 1974. The first deacon class of twenty-nine men was ordained on February 17, 1978. Since then, eight additional classes have been ordained and the ninth class is in formation. Currently, over 100 deacons are serving their parishes and secular communities as joyful witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are leaders, teachers, preachers, counselors and administrators. But most of all these deacons are foot washing servants marked by the towel-like stoles they wear. At their ordination, the Bishop presented each Deacon with the Book of the Gospels, and charged them to ‘Believe what you read. Teach what you believe. Practice what you teach.’
