National Dog Day August 26

After 9/11, it was realized that of all the rescue ef-forts that were recognized, one was overlooked—that was the important part that dogs played in the tireless searching for sur-vivors amid the rubble. National Dog Day was started to celebrate dogs—as friends and companions and all the work they do in rescue, therapy, service, herding and sledding and all the ways in which they are so important in our lives. So on Sunday, Celebrate

Dogs! Give your pooches an extra hug, a special treat, and let them know how much they are valued for the joy they bring to your life. What would we do without them?

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion. - Unknown

Are you ready to be a Hero? When an animal shelter becomes overcrowded, or an animal is ill or injured and needs special care, or a new litter of kittens or puppies needs to be nurtured away from the noise and chaos of the shelter environment, one of a group of very special people provides a temporary home until the animal is ready for adoption. These very gifted people are called “fosters”. Every shelter has fosters as a necessary component of its adoption program. Our shelter is now full to brimming, and is in need of additional homes to care for some of the animals. The alternative is unspeakable. Here’s what the PETCO Foundation wrote about fostering in their Winter 2011 edi-tion of their newsletter, Foundation Tails:

Fosters act as the bridge between what was and what can be. They are the pathway to a new life. You will know them by sight, because they are made of mush. Their hearts melt when they see the animals, matted and sore, limping, de-pressed, lonely, unwanted, and afraid to love. For a little time these orphans are theirs. The orphans are fed with the fos-ter’s own hands. They are loved with a whole heart and the orphans in turn are made whole themselves. But then the foster must be made of steel. The time comes when the orphan is well and sleek. When their eyes shine and their tails wag with joy. Now comes the hard part. They must let them go—not without a tear, but without a regret. For they are safe forever, and a new animal needs the fos-ter now.

Kansas requires that a foster home be licensed, but it is a relatively simple process. If interested, please call Andi and she will be happy to explain how to make it hap-pen. You can make a significant contribution. By offering a dog or a cat a tempo-rary home, one-on-one human interaction, and general socialization skills, their ad-optability increases many times over.

The sun was nowhere visible from the yardarm when volunteers began to gather to prepare for the garage sale last Saturday—it was quite a chore just to get the tables moved out of the building. And much preparation before that day. Thanks to Julie Payne who organized the event, and the other volunteers on Saturday, including Julie’s sister Jan, Fran Clay, Janice Porter, Robyn Porter, Judy Laver, Hazel Jones, Sandy Thompson, and Jeanne Cloud. Others were in-volved in preparing for the sale, including some of Julie and Jan’s co-workers at Herff-Jones. A preliminary count on Saturday showed a profit of almost $1,500 for the shelter’s benefit.

Thanks to all who worked!

Thanks to all who shopped!

Monastery

Thanks for sharing this newsletter with others!

Monastery. He’s a happy boy with a serious name! Monastery is a sweet, friendly, playful, regal little guy. At only five months old, he is already pretty calm and actually sat still for quite a while to have his photo taken. Monastery likes every human being on the planet, gets along fabulously with other cats, and is just politely curious about dogs. Purring? He is a purring machine. Monastery would make a wonderful family pet, or an amazing companion for an individual.

To all the fur-beings who are lost,

Or homeless,

Or living as strays,

may they find a good meal to eat.

May they have shelter to keep them

warm.

May they have comfort.

May they be shown kindness by strangers.

And may they return home, or find good

homes.

May they rest in a place in which they can

thrive.

Filled with love, with warmth, with tender

caring,

with good food, with true companions

for all of their days.
