I started by photographing the swimming pool. I indeed spent a lot of time photographing people in and around the pool, but it is in the basement, where there are portholes that allow you to observe unsuspecting swimmers under the surface of the water, that my work really took shape, as well as during night shots wich provided me with a welcome counterpoint to the chaos and tension I felt during the day. Among the many facets of the site, I quickly felt that my work would be built on three themes: night, water and girls.

As often, I have tried to produce rather abstract images that express a certain timelessness. In Genesis, darkness dominated before the advent of light, and water existed before the earth. Water is an essential condition for the emergence of life, it relates to birth and childhood. One can see this work as an evocation of origins. Moreover, I am very interested in the number three, it is a fundamental number in most cultures, it expressses totality, completion. From the ancient concept of the ages of life to the Freudian definition of the different stages in the evolution of the self or the Fates, the Roman deities who rule the destiny of mankind from birth to death, the number three constantly apperas, like the triads in my photographs. Thus the different states of water, whether liquid, vaporous or solid or the three colors that dominate my images of Montchoisi, black, white and blue. My working method has not changed; I always try to bring up the uncanny, or even disturbing nature of a subjet. The night has long been central to my work. It is notably due to my interest in dark romanticism and psychoanalysis. However, the theme of water is new in my work: its close links with imagination evoke another subject that is dear to me – the forest. www.idpure.ch/flip/montchoisi/

Montchoisi.
