What is DDT?
• In 1948 Paul Mueller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine
• DDT is a pesticide
• Persistent Organic Pollutant
![Page 4: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Structure of DDT
• Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane
![Page 5: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Rachel Carson
• Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring

DDT
• DDD– 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis[p-chlorophenyl] ethane
• DDE – Dichlorodiphenyldichlolorethylene
– a degradation of DDT
– also dangerous to environment
![Page 8: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Dangers of DDT
• Bioaccumulation
• POP
• Birds are major target species
![Page 9: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
MOA in Birds
• Inhibits Ca-dependent ATPases
• Egg shell thinning
• Increased risk of damage to eggs
![Page 10: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Birds affected by DDT• Osprey• Brown Pelican • Raptor
![Page 11: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
How DDT “helped”
• Boomerang Paradigm
• Increased awareness of ecotoxicity
![Page 12: DDT](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/55657806d8b42a7b518b53bf/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Conclusions
• In conclusion, DDT is an insecticide that was used heavily from the late 1930’s to the early 1970’s
• Throughout this time there were several populations of birds that declined rapidly
• DDT has been one of the most widely influential pesticides to help gain the attention of the impact we have on the environment.
