DDI Products and Services

Every IP network manager, whether an enterprise network engineer or a

service provider operations technician, must track IP addresses and assign

them in accordance with a diligent inventory and assignment process. This

IP address inventory drives the configuration of deployed DHCP and DNS

servers running throughout the network, which automate address

assignment and resolve domain names for clients. Managing these critical

and tightly integrated DDI (DHCP/DNS/IPAM) functions requires a powerful

and flexible solution. Enterprise network managers who use spreadsheets

or server-by-server configuration methods run the risk of mistyping

Sapphire Virtual Appliances

IPControl™ Sapphire from the BT Diamond IPproduct suite simplifies deployment andconsolidates monitoring and patchmanagement for distributed DNS/DHCPservices. All Sapphire platforms are purpose-built, secure appliances and areperformance-engineered for a variety ofdeployment options. The Sapphire virtualappliance is a self-contained virtual machinewith the proprietary Sapphire operatingsystem which is built from the ground up by BTDiamond IP. IPControl Sapphire virtualappliances and can be installed on VMWareESX 4.x servers and managed using thecentralized IPControl IPAM solution.

Sapphire Virtual Appliance Benefits

Sapphire virtual appliances provide a similarfeature set as Sapphire hardware platforms,with the added benefit of installing as a virtualmachine. Virtual appliances enableorganizations to realize the benefits ofvirtualization, including:

Virtual Installations withCentralized Control

Sapphire virtual appliances are simple to deployas DHCP/DNS servers and do not requiremanual application of OS patches or installationof DNS/DHCP services. The virtual appliancesare shipped with IPControl DHCP/DNS servicessoftware pre-installed on a hardenedproprietary (not a modified distribution) Linuxoperating system. Each Sapphire virtualappliance can be centrally monitored via acentralized IPControl software installation or aSapphire EX appliance, either of which providescentralized monitoring, services control, andpatch management of distributed Sapphirevirtual appliances. Patch upgrades encompassDNS/DHCP services upgrades as well as those tothe appliance OS and kernel.

IPControl centralized management provides aholistic, consistent user interface to manageall of your IP address space, subnets, addresspools, DNS domains and resource records.DHCP and DNS configuration information iscreated and deployed to relevant DHCP/DNSservers, hardware appliances or virtualappliances accordingly.

Maximum IPAM Flexibility

The Sapphire virtual appliance is anotherdeployment and IP management option forcustomers desiring to maximize the return onIPAM investments. The IPControl architecturedepicted above features a centralized,redundant IPControl Executive, available assoftware or as a Sapphire EX appliance. Thecentralized system is used to configure, monitorand manage a variety of deployed DHCP andDNS implementations, including Sapphirehardware appliances, Sapphire virtualappliances, stock ISC/BIND DHCP and DNSservers, and stock Microsoft DHCP/DNS servers.BT Diamond IP also offers a variety of supportprograms as well as managed services in variousflavors to assist customers in maintaining theirIPAM infrastructure and to perform moves,adds and changes on behalf of customers.

Streamlined IPAM and DHCP/DNS Management Services

BT Diamond IP’s award-winning IPControlSapphire product line streamlines customers’ IPaddress management (IPAM) functions as wellas DHCP and DNS server administration.Acclaimed as “amazingly intuitive” by NetworkTesting Labs, IPControl simplifies IP addressplanning and DHCP and DNS serverconfigurations. But as with all appliance- orserver-based services deployments, theadministration of each server introduces addedtechnical and political complexity.

Customers manage not only the IPAMconfigurations of deployed DHCP and DNSservices in their respective networks, but alsoperform system administration tasks such asmonitoring, upgrades and configuration of theservers running these services. Often thissystem administration function is performed bya separate organization or team, which furtherincreases complexity in the coordination ofupgrades and troubleshooting.

Sapphire InfrastructureManagement (SIM) Service

The foundation of BT Diamond IP’s ManagedIPAM Service is the Sapphire InfrastructureManagement (SIM) Service, which providesmanagement of backups, upgrades, monitoringand administration of deployed IPControlSapphire appliances. The SIM service providesfor the system administration of deployedSapphire appliances, including 24 x 7 x 365monitoring of Sapphire appliances, proactivetrouble reporting and resolution and upgradingof Sapphire operating system, kernel, as well asDHCP and DNS services for security fixes or newfeature sets. These requisite administrationfunctions are performed by BT Diamond IPexperts within the BT Diamond IP ManagedServices Center, offering unsurpassed expertiseand responsiveness.

Managed IPAM Service

The Managed IPAM Service encompasses andembellishes the SIM Service to providesupport for IPAM moves, adds and changes.The IPAM Managed Service offers a completeIPAM outsource option, providing all of thesystem administration, monitoring andupgrades for deployed Sapphire DHCP/DNSappliances plus the day-to-day updates to IPaddress blocks, subnets, IP addressassignments, address pools, DNS domains andresource records. Customers may establishregular changes and log requests through asimple BT Diamond IP Managed Service portal.These IPAM functions are performed by BTDiamond IP experts within the BT Diamond IPManaged Service Center to provide rapid andaccurate IPAM services.

The IPAM Services Stack

Any IPAM deployment requires administration notonly of IPAM application layer changes such assubnet, address, resource record or address poolmoves, adds and changes, but additionallyadministration of the underlying server and/orappliance infrastructure. Depicted to the right as afour layer stack, the IPAM functions comprise thetop layer and include block management, subnetallocations and static and reserved IP addressassignments. This layer also includes DHCP poolplanning in conjunction with the address plan andDNS domain planning. These functions in turnsupport the DHCP/DNS layer where pools, domainand resource records are configured on respectiveDHCP and DNS appliances.

Managed IPAM Services

Traditional IPAM systems stop at this point,leaving the customer to monitor deployedservices, performing upgrades of DHCP/DNSservices as well as operating systems, applyingsecurity patches, and backup and restore.These tasks are often cumbersome yet criticalto keeping DHCP and DNS services up andrunning. BT Diamond IP Managed IPAMService can help you address these lowerlayers or the entire IPAM stack.

BT Diamond IP Managed Services

BT Diamond IP’s hallmark is flexibility; theIPControl Sapphire product line is the most flexibleon the market. But now BT Diamond IP offers anadditional dimension of flexibility, encompassingall or part of the IPAM services stack.

The SIM Service, highlighted in green in thisIPAM services stack, enables you to retain allIPAM move/add/change (M/A/C) functionalitywhile outsourcing monitoring andadministration of deployed SapphireDHCP/DNS appliances.
