  • Introduction You are now reading the Official DCX Manual!! Weve worked hard to give you our vision of how the Desert Combat mod (http://www.desertcombat.com) should be played, by Extending it. With this document, we will describe the various weapons, vehicles and tools that make up DCX. Some people have been amazed at the amount of content weve included in the mod. Should you find any omissions or errors in this document, or you wish to give us some general feedback about the mod, please feel free to drop by our official forums (http://www.dcxtended.com/forums) and let us know. We are a community mod and we welcome feedback from our fan base. Not all fan suggestions are put in to the mod, but we do give consideration to those that we feel are worthy. We like to listen. Take some time to look at our Sponsor page at the end of the document. Without them, developing DCX would certainly be a lot more difficult. We hope you continue to enjoy playing DCX now and in the future. Please check out the official website (http://www.dcxtended.com) often for up-to-date information. With the release of BF2, we will be developing our own mod from the ground up called Rising Conflicts (http://www.risingconflicts.com). Check it out!! See you on the Battlefield!!!

  • Message from Droid

    ~~~~~~~~~~ First off, I would like to thank all the of the DCX community. I hope you enjoy DCX 0.9. The staff at Salty Dogs Productions has worked hard to get this out to you. DCX 0.9 will be our last official release for Battlefield 1942. Updates, patches and map packs may still be released from time to time. I would like to thank all of the people who have worked on DCX over the last two years. Over seventy people at various times have helped produce DCX, from coders to testers. What started out as a small one-man mod, evolved into a large thirty plus team of developers, working many hours to give the community a fun game to play. DCX has had lots of help throughout the two years of its development. With sponsors like ServerXtreme (http://www.serverxtreme.com) behind us since day one and others like UltraEdit (http://www.ultraedit.com) for just over a year. Titanium servers, until recently, have helped us with our web hosting. The Salty Dogs developers will be focusing their energy on a new BF2 mod, Rising Conflicts (http://www.risingconflicts.com). We hope to see the DCX community evolve into a DCX, RC community giving you good quality fun mods to play. With our recent merger with the BF2020 mod we have added to our mod development team and have also aligned our selves with Crime Syndicate, a BFV mod. Once again, thanks for all of your support.
  • FAQs
    So what is DCX exactly? DCX is also known as DC Extended. It is a modification of the Desert Combat modification (http://www.desertcombat.com) for Electronic Art's (EA) Battlefield 1942 game (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/1942/us). Battlefield 1942 (BF1942) is a World War 2 (WW2) game that involves all aspects of warfare, from infantry to tanks to ships to airplanes. Desert Combat (DC) uses BF1942 as a base and upgrades the combat environment to modern times. It changes the old WW2 equipment into modern late 20th century and 21st century equipment. It adds such things as the AK-47 assault rifle, M-16 assault rifle, T-72 tank, Humvee, Mig-29 fighter, AC-130 gunship and many more. Visit DC's website (above) for more details.
    What do I need to play it? Install the following, in this order, to prevent game play issues:
    Battlefield 1942 - Purchase from your local retailer Battlefield 1942 1.6 patch - http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/1942/usBattlefield 1942 1.61 patch - http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/1942/usDesert Combat 0.7 - http://www.desertcombat.comDCX 0.9 - http://www.dcxtended.com
    We recommend that you do not use a CD crack with your legitimate copy of Battlefield 1942 as this may prevent you from playing the mod.
    - 7 -
  • Do I need to download DC Final? No. DC Final is another mini-mod that uses Desert Combat as its base, just like DCX. You do not need to have it installed in order to play DCX.
    What are your plans for DCX in the future? DCX .9 will be the last major release of DCX, as mentioned in the Introduction. With the release of Battlefield 2, the DCX team will dedicate their time to the development of the Rising Conflicts mod. For up-to-date information on Rising Conflicts, visit the website at http://www.risingconflicts.com.
    Will there be any new patches after DCX .9 comes out? We do expect to release small maintenance patches as the need arises. It all depends on feedback from the fans.
  • VEHICLES
    Coalition Forces United States
    DPV: Desert Patrol Vehicle
    The DPV is a very fast mode of transportation across the battlefield. The modified DCX version has a nitrous booster, which gives the DPV extra power to move it rapidly across flat areas, climb very steep terrain and pull off some very impressive jumps. The vehicle is virtually indestructible; however the driver and passengers are exposed to small arms fire. The driver is capable of activating nitrous boosters to
    increase the vehicles speed. The right passenger position can operate a forward firing M2 machine gun, while the rear passenger position operates a forward firing Mk19 40mm grenade launcher. Two additional passengers can be transported while hanging on to the cage of the vehicle.
    HUMVEE:
    The lightly armored Humvee can transport three to six soldiers (depending on the model) with a reasonable amount of speed. There are a variety of different models both armed and unarmed. These include: M997A2 Maxi-Ambulance: Carries a driver, passenger and four wounded soldiers. It can heal soldiers as well as rearm them.
    M998 Avenger: Carries a driver, passenger and an operator of the Avenger air
    defense system, which includes Stinger missiles and a 12.7mm M3P machine gun.
    - 19 -
  • M998 Troop Carrier: Carries a driver and five passengers in an open cab. M1038 Troop Carrier: Carries a driver and five passengers in a closed cab. M1043 Armament Carrier: Carries a driver, three passengers and a gunner, who
    controls a M2 machine gun or Mk19 40mm grenade launcher.
    M1045 Armament Carrier: Carries a driver, three passengers and a gunner, who
    controls the TOW missile launcher.
    M-113 Gavin:
    There are a variety of lightly armored M-113s available. They can transport soldiers across the battlefield, while being protected from small arms fire. The gunner can use a M2 machine gun or a TOW missile launcher, depending upon the configuration. In addition to the driver and a gunner, the M-113 can transport up to four additional passengers. The vehicle also has amphibious capability when a wetter, alternative route is needed.
    M-163 VADS:
    The M-163, like the M-113, has light armor and is amphibious. The primary difference between them is that there is only one vehicle position for the driver. The driver controls the 20mm Vulcan cannon for taking down air targets and is equipped with air search radar. The downside to the vehicle is that the driver is exposed to small arms fire and is a prime candidate for snipers.
    M-109:
    The M-109 is a self-propelled howitzer that carries a total of three crewmembers. When someone is in the gunner position, the driver position is locked. This prevents someone from driving away with the vehicle
    - 20 -
  • while the gunner is attempting to range a target. The gunner can either fire the 155-mm howitzer at direct line of sight targets or at spotted targets. Position three is available with a forward firing M2 machine gun.
    M-270 MLRS:
    ire
    Similar in operation as the M-109, the MRLS is a self-propelled artillery weapon. The drivers compartment will be locked when someone is operating the weapon system, similar to that of the M-109. The MRLS can fa barrage of rockets at targets in direct line of sight or atspotted targets. One unique feature of the MRLS is that the driver can launch a remote controlled UAV. The UAV can fly to its target and spot for artillery. Make sure you leave enough room to spawn the UAV
    and ample space for it to take off. See the UAV vehicle description for more details.
    M1A1 / A2 Abrams MBT:
    The Abrams can be a formable weapon on the battlefield. It is the main battle tank for the U.S. army. The driver can fire the main cannon and operate a 7.62mm M240 coaxial machine gun. On the M1A1, the gunners position controls a 360-degree, counter-rotating M2 machine gun. The tank commander can use a 360-degree firing 7.62mm M240 machine gun as well as discharge twelve smoke canisters in to a wide
    arc in the direction that the turret is facing. Only a few things separate the capability of the M1A2 from the M1A1. The primary difference between the two is the mine plow located on the front of the M1A2 and there is only one turret mounted, counter-rotating M2 machine gun. The tank commander remotely controls this machine gun from within the confines of the turret.
    M2A3 Bradley:
    The Bradley Fighting Vehicle System is capable of carrying four passengers in to battle, in addition to the driver. It has medium armor suitable for protecting it from direct hits by heavy weapons. It is armed with a 25mm Bushmaster chain gun and a TOW missile system. The driver controls both of these weapons.
    - 21 -
  • The Bradley also provides a mobile health and ammo cache, for troops sitting in the passenger compartment.
    UAV:
    This specialized vehicle is used by the MRLS to self-spot targets. Once launched by the MRLS driver, it can be remotely flown to its target and call in an artillery request. The pilots view can be changed 90 degrees, downward. This allows the pilot to over-fly the target and spot the artillery rather than flying directly at the target to make the spot. This vehicle is susceptible to damage, so watch out for that ground fire.
    AH-6 / OH-6 / MH-6 Little Bird
    The Little Bird, as it is known, is a very maneuverable helicopter. It can be configured with a variety of weapon systems. These include: AH-6: Pilot uses dual mini-guns and can fire rockets. Co-pilot can drop white smoke grenades.
    OH-6: Pilot can fire dual mini-guns. The Co-pilot can drop white smoke grenades. MH-6: Pilot and co-pilot can drop white smoke grenades. The chopper can transport
    up to four additional passengers.
    MH-53j Pave Low III
    The Pave Low is the designed for the transportation of equipment and personnel during the assault phase of an amphibious operation. The pilot is able to call in artillery support and drop defensive flares. The co-pilot can also call in artillery. The tail gunner uses a minigun and can deploy a life raft. The door gunner uses and M2 machine gun and can also call in artillery. There are two remaining positions for passengers and also acts as a mobile spawn point.
    - 22 -
  • AH-1W Cobra:
    The AH-1W is a tandem-seat, twin-engine helicopter capable of land or sea-based operations. The USMC uses the AH-1W to provide fire support and fire support coordination to the landing force during amphibious assaults and subsequent operations ashore. There are currently two models used in game.
    Close Support: Pilot can fire Hydra rockets and Hellfire missiles, while the Gunner uses the 20mm turreted cannon and can launch defensive flares.
    Assault: Pilot can use twin firing GPU-2 gun pods and Hydra rockets, while the
    Gunner uses the 20mm turreted cannon and can launch defensive flares.
    AH-64D Apache Longbow:
    The Apache is the U.S. Armys primary attack helicopter and can perform during the day, at night, over an obscured battlefield and in adverse weather conditions. It is designed to take out high-value targets using a variety of weapons configurations. These include:
    Precision Strike: Pilot can fire Hellfire missiles and Stinger missiles, while the
    Gunner uses the 30mm M230 automatic gun. Close Support: Pilot can fire Hydra rockets and Hellfire missiles, while the Gunner
    uses the 30mm M230 automatic gun and fires Stinger missiles. Reconnaissance: Pilot can fire Hydra rockets and Stinger missiles, while the
    Gunner uses the 30mm M230 automatic gun.
    UH-60 / -60I / -60Q Blackhawk // SH-60 Seahawk:
    The UH-60 primary use is for the deployment of troops to hard to reach areas. The UH-60 variants include: UH-60: Two door gunners use mini-guns and there is room for three passengers in addition to the pilot.
    - 23 -
  • UH-60I: The pilot has 16 Hellfire missiles at his disposal. The co-pilot can place the crosshairs over a target using the mouse and then call in an artillery barrage. There are three additional passenger positions in the rear compartment.
    SH-60: The SeaHawk is the USN version of the UH-60. The primary difference between the two is that the pilot can drop flares, the co-pilot can drop and control torpedoes and the door gunners in position two and three use M2 machine guns.
    C-130 Hercules:
    he
    The Herc is the air transport workhorse of Coalition Forces in DCX. The C-130 is cable of carrying three small vehicles in its cargo hold and transporting them to remote locations on the battlefield. The Loadmaster controls the rear exit ramp and can paradrop a DPV or supplies.
    AC-130 Spectre:
    When used to its fullest capability, the AC-130 is a devastating weapons platform, in the hands of its pilot and crew. It literally rains fire down upon its target, using a variety of player-controlled weapons. If an enemy spots one of these flying overhead, run for cover!! The pilot can drop temporary spawn point and launch
    defensive flares. Two gunners can fire 20mm Vulcan cannons. A third gunner uses a 40mm Bofors cannon, while the fourth gunner uses a very powerful 105mm howitzer. The Loadmaster operates the rear-loading ramp and can drop a very powerful bomb, called the M.O.A.B.
    A-10 Thunderbolt II:
    The A-10 is one of the widely recognized ground support aircraft in the world. It is also known as the Warthog. Although it has been in service for over 30 years, it is still used in active theatres of operation. The pilot can use a 30mm Gatling gun and either drop Mk82 Snake Eye bombs or cluster bombs, depending on t
  • load out. It may be slow, but it can take a lot of punishment as compared to most otheaircraft.
    r
    AV-8A / -8B / -8C / -8H / -8M / -8S Harrier:
    The Harrier is the only V/STOL (Vertical / Short Take-off and Landing) aircraft in the current U.S. arsenal. A skilled pilot can be very dangerous through the use of the aircrafts directional nozzles, to shake an enemy of their tail and come around for the kill.     Avro Arrow Mk. 1 / Mk. 2:
    One of the finest achievements in Canadian aviation history, the delta wing Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was never allowed to fulfill its mission. The Mark 2 production version of the arrow, powered with two Avro Canada Iroquois turbo jet engines, would have been capable of achieving Mach 2 with full military load. Originally designed in the 1950s the Avro Arrow was a technological marvel, even by todays standards. It provided a lot of firsts in aircraft design including, but not limited to: Use of a long internal weapons bay to allow carriage of specialized, long-
    range standoff and cruise missiles. First aircraft to fly with fly-by-wire and artificial feedback. First high wing jet fighter that made the entire upper surface a lifting body. Engines positioned at the rear to allow both a lighter structure and
    significant payload at the centre of gravity.
    The Avro Arrow is a favorite with the DCX staff, especially with the Canadian members. It is intended to add to the fun of playing DCX and should not be viewed as a reflection of any real world scenarios. It is one fast bird and can easily outrun most of the other aircraft available. One mistake a pilot should never make is to attempt to dogfight in this aircraft. It was designed to be an interceptor. Dart in and then dart out of the combat area and you will be successful in your attacks. Engage in a dogfight and youll soon be a smoking hole in the ground.
    The Arrow can be seen with two different paint schemes; however they both have the same weapons load out. There are two positions in each aircraft in the form of a pilot and a navigator. The pilot can fire short-range missiles or faster, medium-range missiles. The navigator can call in artillery support or launch defensive flares.
    GracefulBFL The GracefulBFL application is designed to accommodate the use of Battlefield
    1942. It allows players to connect to LAN or Online servers using either an IP address or domain name. What GracefulBFL is not, is a replacement for the in game browser or any other such browser applications. The added benefit to using GracefulBFL is for mod testers to easily run the game in a window and make use of the debugger application, which was made available for the mod community. When you launch GracefulBFL you will see the main screen appear as seen below. From here you can connect to the official DCX server by clicking Join Server or key in the IP address or domain name of the server that you want to connect too. If the server is password protected you may also enter the password in to the appropriate field provided.
  • If you click on the Windowed? check box and connect to a server, the game will run in a window rather than in a full screen. Once this checkbox is enabled, you will also have the option of checking on the Debugger? checkbox, only if you have the debugger installed on your computer. Please note, that you cannot connect to an online server and run the debugger. You can only run the debugger while connecting to a LAN server. This is a limitation of the debugger application. If you have an IP address or domain name keyed in to the Server field, you can click on the Query button and it will provide you with information about the particular server, as can be seen the image below.
    For support for this application, please visit the DCX forums at http://www.dcxtended.com/forums and post your query.
