EditorialDear Friends,Bonjour, Namaste, Kem Chho?

You are reading these few lines swinging in a jhula, in your living room or seated near the Sabarmati (Narmada?) river front or at the Café le Rendez-Vous sipping a warm cappuccino or hot chocolate (Winter is coming!... at least in France), alone or with your friends or with your AF teacher, in any case, be comfortable and welcome to the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad and to its Branch in Baroda.

It is already the last 2013 issue of this newsletter but don’t panic; you will always continue to hear from us, check the following pages! Our new website is now fully operational (or will be very soon depending on when you are reading these lines) and very user friendly; it is your main source of information regarding our various French classes and activities. Log on to ahmedabad.afindia.org.

We say that time flies and in our case it cannot be more true. Did somebody see the year 2013 passing? Because we definitely didn’t! This (almost past) year was most probably the most important one since the creation of our institution in Ahmedabad, with first of all the opening of our new premises. If you don’t have already visited us, you have missed something. The festival Bonjour India during February and March, with for the first time in Gujarat, we will never say it too much, the performance of a Symphonic Orchestra. I am of course talking about ANANTA, Opus 195, the original artistic creation between Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, his 2 sons and the Avignon Orchestra, France. And when you also have the privilege in the same year to welcome and work with artists like Eryck Abecassis, Amruta Patil, Mallika Sarabhai, OZMA, Aditi Gupta, Tuhin Paul, Rishi Singhal, Sabine Peters, NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati, Esther David, Subrato Bhowmick, Erroll Pires, Niranjan Bhagat, Chinu Modi, the French School for Asian Studies, Sekhar Mukherjee, Georges Lacroix, Annick Teninge, Sara Keller, Christine Chareyron, Prof. Vasavada, Xavier Wrona, Paco Weiser, Revanta Sarabhai, and many others, you could be satisfied!

Nothing would have been possible without the active support of our Executive Members, please meet them on the next page, and without all the employees of the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad and its partners. Our students and members are the real strength of our Institute. Thank you all for your involvement, trust and support.I promise you that 2014 will be as active and dynamic as this past beautiful year!

Aditi Gupta, founder of Menstrupedia, is offering us a beautiful gift to complete this year, her illustrations on the cover and in the next page! Thank you Aditi and also to her partner Tuhin Paul, friends of the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. This is the AF family spirit, a group of dedicated people who are supporting our initiatives… Join them!

In the meantime, I wish you all Happy Diwali, Muharram, Happy Guru Nanak Jayanti, Happy Christmas, whatever you celebrate… and a Happy New Year! With all my best wishes, to share with your families and friends,

Warmly,Philippe MartinDirector

On September 4, 2013, we had the great pleasure to host our Annual General Meeting and the election of our new Executive Committee members. It was the occasion to do a presentation and a report on the activities of the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad organised during 2012-2013. As in every other association, a member is a person who shows his interest and supports the organisation by taking a subscirption. Being a member of the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad does not necessarily mean giving your time or being overwhelmingly invested but it gives you the right to vote during the General Assembly. It means that you express yourself upon the future of our Institute. So do not wait to make your voice heard and come closer from now on to the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. An association is always more dynamic when it gathers more members!

Tax benefits – 80G certificate | Please note that all contributions to Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad are tax-deductible. Tax incentives give companies a tax break; Partners are involved beyond this benefit, for the development of the cross-cultural dialogue between Europe and India. “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder” (Molière)

A personalised Membership Card is issued to all members of the Alliance Française (students, individuals, couples, families). With it, you can borrow documents from our multimedia library and enjoy on complementary basis all the events and activities organised by our institute, and on top of that, discounts at the Café Le Rendez-Vous!

It is possible to become member anytime during the year - Half-Yearly and Quarterly Memberships are offered.

Join us today - Become an Alliance Française member!

Every once in a while, you need an eatery that makes you feel like you’re anywhere but well, here. That for that hour or two, there exists the tantalizing and entirely implausible possibility that you’ll walk out of the Le Rendez-Vous café and think that you are in a totally different environment. Some establishments here accomplish that via the food or the decor, and it’s often those that manage to do both, that tend to become

regular haunts. Add to that list now, Café Le Rendez-Vous is an eatery that’s popped up in the heart of the city just minutes from Prahladnagar. The café achieves its escapist fantasy through its simplicity, and being part of the beautiful Alliance Française, the offer of an all-day dining spot, and an affordable menu that spans from breakfast to post-work munchies with a non-judgmental charm.(breakfast is offered all day).

The cafe is one of the few in the city, which opens early as well as late. As in Europe, it is possible to have an excellent espresso on the way to work! As its name suggests, it is a meeting place and ideal to grab a great cup of coffee with friends, lunch with colleagues or a relaxed evening meal.

Le Rendez-Vous occupies the narrow garden next to the building’s entrance. Generous u-shaped benches provide a great space for large sociable gatherings and smaller tables sit under the covered space. There are trees and the beginning of what will be a beautiful garden. Its serene environment, beautiful furniture and colorful crockery add to its charm. In short, it’s the sort of happy place for those who want to make an afternoon or evening of it.

The menu, created by Ms. Shah (a hotel management graduate from Switzerland), is one of the better designed ones we’ve seen in the city, which not only has waffles on its menu but also a bit of French food such as quiches, crepes and lemon tart. Like most cafe fare, it’s a disparate mish-mash that draws from various countries. Its list of foods includes a watermelon salad with feta, vol au vent, Thai curry and some Mexican.

H.E. the Ambassador of France to India, François Richier, visited Gujarat on 14 and 15 October. His focus was on forward-looking cooperation projects in fields such as sustainable urban development, cultural exchanges and heritage conservation, and education and design. The French Consul General in Mumbai, Mr. Jean-Raphaël Peytregnet, accompanied him.

H.E. inaugurated the new “Heritage Section” of the Alliance Française, which is aimed at developing cooperation to study and preserve the historical buildings and artefacts of Gujarat. The “Heritage Section” has already hosted an exhibition of historical documents on the ports of Gujarat and it is planning one on the restoration of old city buildings of Ahmedabad. Among upcoming projects the digitisation of archives of the French Consulate in Surat (17th to 19th century) is under consideration. These archives tell of the longstanding relation between France and Gujarat and life in old Surat, as seen by French envoys. The “Heritage Section” could become the host of this collection, and make it available to scholars and general public.

younger age. Being multilingual will definitely widen the horizon of your children with more exposure to the

outside world.

Do you adore French as a language? However, do you find like some of other students that the grammar is a hindrance on your way to explore the vast French culture?

Voila, we are here to help you sort out this problem albeit with our happy twist. We will make it more interesting this time by bringing in class some of French songs, cinema, funny but useful videos, the literary texts and things alike.

We will run the class keeping in mind few of the tenses, the articles, the adjectives, the nouns, the pronouns, sentence formation, the modes like Imperative and Indicative and of course we always wish to keep it a la carte after all!

Join us in class then!

Even if you’re a fashion freak and you find it difficult while flicking through the pages of your magazine when you bump into some of French expressions, if you’re learning French, you’re most welcome!

In parallel to your French classes, borrow from the library and watch French films, read French comics, listen to the French songs (Cds) and watch the French channel TV 5. Attend our cultural activities and share in the class in French. Enroll for our workshops level wise. Continue with the conversation classes when you finish your Level A2.

Are you interested to discover the world and cultures of French speaking countries, discover new rhytms, music, sounds ? This is the right workshop to be in touch with French dance forms !!

About UnnicYcles Between October 2013 and February 2014, Dr. Unni Karunakara, the outgoing MSF International President, will start a bicycle tour across India – his home country. His personal aim is to fundraise and “give back to the organization” – an endeavour that will fulfil a personal wish.

The project will see Dr. Unni ride a bicycle from the mountainous terrain of Srinagar down to the coastal city of Thiruvananthapuram located on the Southern tip of the Indian peninsula. Throughout the route, Dr. Unni would like to establish a dialogue with students of medical colleges, village heads, representatives of civil society, NGOs, actors, journalists, writers, artists, entrepreneurs, sports persons, former MSF patients, MSF staff and the media about different topics related to medical humanitarian aid (for example access to medical healthcare, vaccines and the future relevance of MSF in India).

About the MSF film screeningsThe film screenings will take place and in collaboration with Alliance Française in various cities around India which correlate with the cities visited by Unni as part of his Unnicycle tour. A short question and answer session (15 minutes), led by Dr. Unni Karunakara will follow each film screening. The screenings will be open to the public and will provide an opportunity for them to learn about the work of MSF and some of the main challenges and issues related to medical humanitarian aid.

The Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad will receive the International Documentary Film Festival 2013 organised under the monthlong celebrations of “Documentary Films’ Month” in France. This festival, which will take place at nearly 1800 venues in France and abroad, aims at presenting creative documentaries to a wider audience. The event is coordinated by the French association ‘Images en bibliothèques’ and is organized in partnership with the ‘Institut Français’.

On the occasion of the release of the latest film by the director Nicolas Philibert’s ‘La maison de la radio’, the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad has decided to pay a tribute to a significant figure in French documentary films by presenting a series of four films that depict and raise questions about the different aspects of communication and language.

The well-known educational institutes of Ahmedabad and Baroda like Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University - School of Liberal Studies, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, H.L. Institute of Commerce (Ahmedabad University) and AES Institute of Computer Studies (Ahmedabad University) and M.S. Univervity, Baroda are proud participants in this film festival ‘The Month of Documentary Films 2013’ and will project the selected films at their respective premises in the month of November.

THE MONTH OF DOCUMENTARY FILMS

All the films with English Subtitles

In the land of the deaf (Le Pays des sourds) (1992)

Four films By Nicolas Philibert

To Be and To Have(Etre et Avoir) (2002)

Nénette (2009) La maisonde la radio (2012)

Standing in front of a sheet of music, four deaf persons gesture with their hands in chorus. This unusual musical approach to the world of silence leaves no doubt about the filmmaker’s intention: “set our usual view of the deaf on its head, to rehabilitate their culture”.

In this film, Nicolas Philibert does not confine himself to a single site, Instead his camera roves from a school for teaching children how to pronounce sounds and words to a class in sign language, then on to interviews with several adults on what it is like to be deaf, to stage performances by a deaf-mute actor and, finally, to a wedding...

How do we learn to live with others and their wishes? Director Nicolas Philibert poses this question in a village schoolhouse in Auvergne, where Georges Lopez teaches 13 children, their ages ranging from 4 to12.

Against a landscape of mountains and farmland, from driving snow to rain and sun, the children gather in Lopez’s warm and colorful classroom, to read, write dictation, cook, and sort things out. At home, the older ones do homework with parents after their chores. At the year’s end, they look ahead to the next, visiting the middle school and meeting the little ones coming in the fall. As they learn sums and adjectives, with Lopez’s help, they also learn to live side by side.

Nénette, an orangutan, is the star of the Parisian zoo where she has lived most of her long life. She is a mother of four and has survived three mates, and she bonds only with a few selected keepers. The camera rests throughout on Nénette and the other apes in everyday situations. The visitors are only seen as occasional reflections in the glass, but we hear their recorded comments and conversations alongside interviews with the zoo keepers.

Twenty-four hours in the life of Radio France, from one dawn to another. Along its corridors, inside its recording studios, with its producers, presenters, journalists and various guests. And outside on a motorbike in the wake of the Tour de France or in the company of a thunderstorm photographer.

“Est-ce ainsi” Architecture Firm, France

Tête-à-tête with Xavier Wrona and Meredith Black

Art TalkDate10 Dec. 20137:00 pm

Venue French GalleryOPEN TO ALL

ALL ARE WELCOME

Xavier Wrona is back! And this time not alone! He will be accompanied by his associate, Meredith Black, and both of them will tell us more about the philosophy of their firm, the projects that they have managed and more importantly, how they conceived each project. It will also be the occasion to discover their plans for the future in France as well as in India.

To present Xavier Wrona, Maria Louis, Editor - Architect & Interiors India, wrote in the magazine October 2011 issue: “Wrona is very unlike any architect one usually encounters. Candid about his vulnerability, he admits plainly that he became an architect because he is “a bit too fragile to be an artist”. Born in 1976, he graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-La Villette and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA; and created his firm Est-ce ainsi in 2006.

“My dream, which is nearly a reality, is to design architecture for everybody; including people who know nothing about it and cannot afford an architect” he discloses. Small projects with small budgets mean living frugally and working long hours, but that’s the way he likes

it. “Is it possible that architecture is a luxury? It seems to me that we should be able to design buildings with next to nothing” he muses.

For Wrona, being an architect needs dedication “to be able to devote your life to understanding the world we live in.”

This Art Talk promises you to discover Architecture through a different perspective and Xavier already proved it during his previous interactions in Gujarat:

• September 2011, lectures, presentations and workshop “Wearable Architecture” at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, on the occasion of the “Architecture Rendez-Vous” event;

• December 2012, Lecture “There is a problem with architecture”, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Interactions and workshops in Baroda in collaboration with Navrachna University, Vadodara Design Academy and M. S. University.

“The reason behind these architectural experimentations is multiple. It starts from the understanding that if architects have throughout history been of service to the “common good” they no longer are. As Rem Koolhaas recently stated in his book “Project Japan”, architects used to work for public entities. Now that the architect’s main client has become the private sector, not only architects aren’t part of the construction of a common interest, they often happen to be working against these interests. What are architects doing nowadays? What is the task to which their knowledge is being applied?”

You are all invited to think about it and to interact with Xavier and Meredith on these questions. A discussion not to be missed!

“L’Oiseau” by Yves Caumon

Date : 8 November 2013Time : 7:00 pm

Director Yves Caumon’s elegant character study focuses on reclusive Anne, who lives alone in a tiny flat in Bordeaux, seemingly cut off from the rest of the world.

Withdrawn, aloof with her co-workers and estranged from her friends, Anne spends her evenings at the cinema or in her flat, apparently resigned to a solitary life. But with the arrival of an uninvited avian houseguest, Anne is forced to question her introverted existence and confront a profound grief that hangs over her.

Driven by Kiberlain’s astonishingly committees, nuanced performance and a subtle filmmaking style that is at one exquisitely minimal and rich in emotion and ambiguity, “The Bird” moves towards a quietly devastating conclusion that is at deeply moving and resolutely optimistic.

Musical evening: A musical journey on the roads of France Wednesday, December 04 7 PM- 8PM

After a musical evening dedicated to Paris, we had to pay tribute to rest of the France! France is a multi facetted country which has a wide variety of landscapes and cultures. Throughout history, artists sang songs about the cities and the regions close to their hearts. We, at the library, invite you on a musical journey along the roads of France! From east to west and north to south discovering a varied range of songs (in French and some regional languages) of yesterday and today.

A night in the Museum: The Humanist Photography Thursday, December 19 7 PM- 8PM

Humanist photography is a stream in photography which appeared in the 30s and peaked at the end of the Second World War and in the 60s. It is named so as the human-being, being at the core of its identity. Paris is the privileged center of this movement. By observing the daily lives of Parisians, their work as well as their leisure, photographers have given us a valuable asset of that period. This event and the people in general, will allow you to discover this branch of photography and its most famous representatives: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Brassai or Boubat.

Do you know

The Alliance Team?

Six months after the inauguration of the new premises of Alliance Française d’Ahmebabad, let’s focus on one of the most important changes that happened during this big shift: ‘The Library’.

The library of Alliance Française is managed by Sujit Nair and Simon Gardan. Sujit has learnt French at AFA and, after working in the market research and data analysis domain for long time, joined the AF team as the librarian in 2009. Simon has joined AFA recently. He is an experienced librarian and has worked in municipal libraries in various cities of France and also at the Alliance Française of Dominican Republic and of Paraguay. With the help of Simon’s professional experience, they have worked a lot on organising different spaces in the library and classifying the entire collection.

The idea is to make this new multimedia library a fully functioning community center, a place not only for reading, but also a place to exchange, discover and share knowledge. A librarian’s work is to establish the link between resources and the users, with an easy access to the collection and make the library more attractive!

This link gets strengthened by the new services that the multimedia library has to offer to its users. For example, the library users can enjoy the ‘video corner’ equipped with two screens (one for watching movies that you can pick from our video collection, and the other for TV5 Monde, a French Television channel), they also provide the

users with an internet access with two computers and a WIFI network.

Since the last two months, Simon and Sujit have been conducting various cultural activities at the library to let the users discover the Francophone cultures. The activities are free and open to all, and they talk about the Francophone culture through music, art and of course literature.

Motivated to turn the library into a community center, the two librarians have a lot of projects for future. One of such projects is ‘the launch of ‘Culturetheque’ an online library with a fine collection of books, movies and music in digital format and free and exclusive to all library members, previewed to be launched at the end of this year across the Alliance Française network in India.

To conclude, we would like to say that the new multimedia library of the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad is becoming a modern 21st century library with lots of resources (in French, English and a few in Hindi as well as Gujarati) available in different formats. You are most welcome to come and discover this rich space. Our librarians are pleased to welcome you all 7 days a week!
