Bark in the Park to beheld Aug. 25
A local group is planning ahowling good time at its secondannual event.
Bark in the Park will be held Satur-day, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverside Park inMantorville.
The event, organized by the Mantorville Dog Park com-mittee, will help raise money to build an off-leash dog parkin Mantorville. Admission is free, but donations will beaccepted.
Mantorville Dog Park committee members are excitedabout new additions to this year's event.
"This year's event will be bigger and better," said MegBryngelson, one of the committee's members.
New this year: a silent auction, a dog parade and a dogpageant that will award canines in best-dressed, best trick, smallest dog and largest dog categories. New exhibitorsinclude pet photographers and dog washers.
Event attractions from last year's event, including agilityand disc dog demonstrations and root beer floats, will also befeatured. A bounce house will be set up for children, andfood and will be available for purchase.
Land for the dog park has been set aside underneath theMantorville water tower on the northwest side of the city, near the intersection of Stagecoach Road and JeffersonStreet. Funds raised from this event will go toward fencingand other expenses needed to help open the park. If enoughmoney is raised, the group hopes to see the dog park opennext spring.
"Anybody who has a dog and even those who don't will want to come to Bark in the Park this year," said Man-torville Dog Park committee member Kay Gunderson."There will be games and food, and we're working on somecelebrity guests. This event is a great chance to support theMantorville Dog Park and socialize with fellow dog lovers."

Alec Fischer, a recent 2012 graduate from Edina HighSchool has created a documentary on bullying and suicide inMinnesota Public Schools entitled Minnesota Nice?. Thefilm addresses the recent surge in teen suicides related to bul-lying, and focuses on real stories of current Minnesota stu-dents who are being bullied in school. Although the mediahas been covering the recent surge in suicides from GLBTstudents who have been bullied in school, Alecs film alsocovers students who are bullied due to their race, religion, appearance, culture, and disability.
The film was given a pre-screening at Edina High School, viewed by more than 1,000 students and faculty. It also pre-miered at the Edina Cinema at the end of June. The 45-minutedocumentary concluded with standing ovations and teary-eyed students. Below are quotes from a few students whoposted their thoughts about the film via Facebook:
There are times when you know you just witnessed some-thing that was going to have a huge impact on people.Watching "Minnesota Nice?" today was one of those times.Today I watched Alec Fischer's documentary about bullyingin Minnesota and was overwhelmedWhen it was fin-ished, I saw on the faces of everyone there that it had movedthem just as much as it had moved me. I know that everyonewho watches this film will be inclined to be a kinder and morecompassionate person. I believe that Alec has created some-thing that will change the way people in Minnesota treat eachother and that will help us to become a safer state. KH
Minnesota Nice almost put me in tears Alec Fischer youdid an awesome job! MH
Alec, your documentary was amazing! Thank you for
spreading the word about bullying! I learned a lot from it andit really made a difference in the way I view everything. Goodjob and congrats!! :) LB

Kasson Library sponsored a freeevent: Zumbro Zoe
The Kasson Library sponsored a free event on Tuesday, August7 in North Park pavilion to over 84 children and parents. Theylearned information about the Zumbro Watershed and the animalsthat call the Zumbro River home.
Education Coordinator Kevin Strauss, his daughter Sarah andanother staff member Katie, helped educate the children on keepingrivers clean for the animals and themselves.
Strauss, dressed as Zumbro Zoe, Katie and Sarah used a slideshow to talk about the different animals and fish that live in theZumbro River. They told stories of Zoe's river animal friends andsimple tricks to keep the area rivers safe, clean and healthy. Zoetold jokes, funny stories, and even had an Ecology Game Show forthe children.
Everyone got to metZumbro Zoe, the six foot Clean RiverOtter, the newest staff member of the Zumbro Watershed Partner-ship. Since Zoe grew up in the Zumbro River, she has decided thatshe's the best creature to represent our river community in citiesacross the Zumbro Watershed.
This free program was sponsored by the Zumbro WatershedPartnership.

Back Pack programThe back to school back pack program is underway and
many volunteers are already hard at work organizing and col-lecting school supplies. For those of you who are unfamiliarwith this program it is a group of volunteers who generouslygive their time to help provide a backpack of necessaryschool supplies for children of low income families through-out Dodge County. Last year close to 300 children in thearea were given a backpack of school supplies that matchedtheir supply list for the grade and school they attend. Withthe economy still struggling even more children are in needthis year.
It is hoped that the wonderful citizens of Dodge Countywill donate school supplies to help the children of the com-munity. Many churches in the area are already collectingsupplies and there are drop boxes at several locationsthroughout the area. You can help by purchasing school sup-plies and bringing them to these drop boxes. Many of thelocal businesses have considerately placed drop boxes attheir locations.
