Pak Army chief confirms death sentence of 15 ‘hardcore terrorists’
ISLAMABAD, Dec 16: Pakistan Army chief Gen
Qamar Javed Bajwa today con-firmed the death sentence of 15"hardcore terrorists", who wereinvolved in killing civilians andabetting the 2016 ChristianColony suicide attacks inPeshawar.
Gen Bajwa "confirmed thedeath sentence awarded to 15hardcore terrorists, who wereinvolved in heinous offencesrelated to terrorism," said astatement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations(ISPR), the media wing of thearmy.
The terrorists were convict-ed for attacking the armedforces/law enforcement agen-cies, abetting suicide bombersin an attack on Christian Colonynear Peshawar, destruction ofeducational institutions andkilling of innocent civilians, itsaid.
In September 2016, four sui-cide bombers attacked theChristian Colony in Peshawar.Security forces promptlyresponded and killed all the
attackers. The Christian colonyis situated outside the militarycantonment.
The Jamaat-ur Ahrar, aTaliban faction, claimed respon-sibility for the attack.
Ibrar, a member of a bannedorganisation, "abetted suicidalbombers in attacking ChristianColony near Peshawar by plan-ning the said attack and provid-ing weapons/suicidaljackets/transportation to suicidebombers," the statement said.
The convict confessed hisoffences and he was awardeddeath sentence.
The convicts were tried byspecial military courts and con-fessed to their crimes before thejudicial magistrate during theirrespective trials, ISPR said.
It said the terror activities bythe convicts had resulted intothe death of 34 people, includ-ing from the armed forces.
Arms and explosives werealso recovered from their pos-session, the statement said.
Apart from the death sen-tence, 20 convicts were awardedimprisonment. (PTI)
Unemployment India's biggest problem: Tharoor
NEW DELHI, Dec 16:
India's biggest crisis isunemployment and the countryneeds to invest more in thetourism sector which hiresnearly 10 times as many peopleas any manufacturing industry,Congress leader ShashiTharoor has said.
He said the future of Indiadepended very much on itsability to escape from the poli-tics of identity and theGovernment's ability to pro-vide answers to the real needsof the people.
"The biggest crisis facingthis country is unemployment.I am strongly in favour ofmeasures that will soak uplabour problem by offeringpeople realistic and viablealternatives. ChannellingGovernment investment intoemployment-generating busi-nesses," the Congress leadersaid.
"We have been so laggardin investing in thetourism...The wonderful ruinsaround our country haveremained ruins rather thanbecoming tourist sites.Tourism hires and employs 8-10 times as many people as anymanufacturing industry can,that too skilled and unskilledpeople," he said.
He said the "polarisationpolitics" of the rulingBharatiya Janata Party wasanchored in the sense ofbelonging that comes out ofhatred.
Commenting on theCongress' recent electoral vic-tories in the assembly polls inMadhya Pradesh, Rajasthanand Chhattisgarh, the 62-year-
old MP fromThiruvananthapuram, Keralasaid his party won by having topoint out to the "horrors" likeagrarian distress, mountingfarmer suicides, besides otherstrong economic and local fac-tors that weighed in heavily.
"The Congress took anapproach that was necessary totake in the face of a rather openattempt by the BJP to polarisethe electorate on religiousidentity by defanging thatnotion," he said.
Tharoor said the temple-hopping of Congress presidentRahul Gandhi during his pollcampaigning was necessary toneutralise the attempt by theBJP to make it a "polarisedelection".
The BJP last monthslammed the Congress forallegedly spreading "hatred"against the RSS and the"Hindus", and describedGandhi's temple visits as"fancy dress Hindutva".
"If the Congress succeededin defanging the possibility ofpolarisation, it is a sensibleachievement and not some-thing to be despaired orsneered at," Tharoor said at abook launch event hereThursday.
