There’s something to be said for following your instincts. Ann had a vision and I admire her for following her instincts. Her daring decision led to a remarkable kitchen renovation. If I’ve learned anything from Ann, it’s to not be afraid to follow my instincts and push the envelope. Sometimes, it’s these decisions that lead to a rewarding end result.

John and Kim Pawelski also took a chance on their Waynesville home. With nine children, space was their major concern. The transformation of their old country kitchen and dining room is astounding.

This issue is all about highlighting the places we gather and the places we retreat to when we need a breather from the everyday stresses of life. In addition to these two kitchens, we’re highlighting a master bathroom remodel and nearly one dozen exquisite powder rooms.

We hope these stories inspire you to follow your instincts. For more design inspiration, be sure to check out our website, Housetrends.com. You can also share your thoughts on our Dayton Facebook page.

Our next issue is all about the holi-days, which are right around the corner! You’ll see it arrive in your mailbox in November.

Sincerely,

Evelyn Yaus and the Housetrends staff

Sunday family dinners are obviously about spending time with one another, but if you’ve got nine children and a small kitchen, it’s virtually impossible.

Kim and John Pawelski have lived in their Waynesville house—formerly a two-family—for more than six years. Kim says the previous owners left little major overhauling for them to do. They loved the old farmhouse feel of the home, and it matched Kim’s love of primitive décor.

“Kim set her house up sympathetically to its original design,” says Clive Morgan, of Knapke Cabinets. Head designer of the company’s Centerville showroom, Morgan was hired to help with the renovation. But he agreed the kitchen had to go.

“They needed a live-in kitchen popu-lar with today’s Midwest living style,” explains Morgan, who describes the for-mer kitchen as essentially U-shaped. A dining room was situated adjacent to the kitchen but, with just a framed opening, the two rooms lacked flow.

“Everyone wanted to congregate with mom in the kitchen and when it was time to eat, we’d be stuffed into the dining room,” says Kim.

Keeping integrity intactSo after an initial meeting, Morgan felt sure about one thing: “We had to open it up.”

First, the wall separating the formal din-ing room and kitchen was knocked down to create one large, open space. The couple’s old formal living room was turned into the new formal dining space, an idea Kim loved because that room features a fireplace.

Morgan loves any design job he gets, but this one was especially exciting for him for two reasons: first, his European background gave him an affinity for older homes; and secondly, while the space required major work, it possessed inher-ent features that gave him certain design advantages.

“I had a strong desire to keep the integ-rity of a family farmhouse kitchen. I was a bit anal about that,” he laughs.

The former kitchen’s high ceilings allowed Morgan to retain height typical of the time period, and he says the propor-tions and thicknesses of the walls made his job easier.

One of the first orders of business was the foundational cabinetry. Morgan suggested Wellborn Forest’s distressed

Mediterranean collection—Venetian Blonde for the room’s main color and Black Oak for both islands. Knapke tends to stick to the same vendor lines unless a kitchen requires a butcher block that they design and build in-house, said Morgan.

Morgan especially likes this line’s dis-tressed glaze finishes for their rubbed-through look, which offered “aged integ-rity.”

Kim knew she didn’t want a traditional cream pigment, and she wasn’t afraid to mix two colors since she trusted Morgan’s ability to understand and “sense” what she desired. However, she admits she won-dered a bit after the cabinets were ordered, but the second they were delivered, “I knew right away they were perfect.”

But prior to the cabinet installation, walls were eliminated, and both soffits and ceiling crown molding were created. Morgan says the flooring in the original dining room offered a great pre-deter-mined palette for the renovation. Since the house was built as a duplex and a kitchen expansion was completed later, Morgan knew a support beam would solve any structural dilemmas.

A commanding presenceOne of the reasons Kim chose Knapke was the islands she saw in the company’s showroom. She wanted the island to be her new kitchen’s main feature—and she wanted it to be big.

016-022 tKIT FamilyBonding.indd 20 9/13/11 10:14:16 AM

kitchen trends Knapke gave Kim what she asked for. “I wanted that to be the gathering place. I have another island that serves as a workspace.”

“It’s essentially a farmhouse table,” says Morgan, “but has functionality a table can’t give you.”

The island not only serves as a central component for entertaining, it offers a way to manage day-to-day tasks. Kim says she often supervises homework time while she cooks weekday dinners.

While the outside looks like an island/table combination, Morgan found a way to offer modern amenities without detracting from the farmhouse appearance by hiding laptop cables underneath and out of sight.

Kim is especially pleased by the extra touches she initially didn’t expect such as how Morgan extended the crown mold-ing down to the counter, and on the floor around the cabinets. “And before it appeared like the cabinets just sat on the floor. Now they look like pieces of furniture.”

Some visual tricks Morgan and the

Knapke crew utilized included the cre-ation of soffits and crown molding, as well as notched cabinets, to solve the problem that the ceilings in the original two rooms differed in height, and the fact that the sidewalls didn’t butt up.

The Pawelskis have tested the kitchen and it has held up to their expectations. Kim can now cook while she visits with her husband and nine kids, and portions of the family don’t have to retreat to another room. Morgan attributes design success at the Pawelskis to creating an environment where a fusion of minds can take place. “I don’t go in to measure but to learn how people live their lives. It’s know-ing the right questions to ask.”

Q: What’s the secret of your success?

A: I’m one of those fortunate people who love what they do and I’m sure clients sense that. Designing fulfills me on so many different levels. I love the creative side, the technical side and the people side. When clients see their finished project they can’t believe it’s the same space, so it’s very satisfying to know that I have played some part in giving them pleasure by improving their quality of life and adding value to their home.

Q; Describe your typical client.

A: Well, there isn’t one. No two clients are the same and no two projects are the same. I work with singles in condos, couples with young families, empty nest-ers, you name it. Projects range from wet bars and media rooms to libraries and, or course, kitchens and baths. Anything to do with cabinetry and remodeling really. Some people come in with very definite ideas about what they want and others want me to make all the decisions for them. If there is a common denomi-nator it’s that most clients start out feel-ing a bit overwhelmed by all the deci-sions and details associated with their project but when they are taken through the process step by step they find the decisions become more manageable. Before long, everything becomes excit-ing and they start having fun! And that’s exactly the way it should be.

Q: Let’s talk about the creative side. Is it tough not to push your personal style onto your clients?

A: Not at all. Every new project is excit-ing in its own right and I’m a great believer in the old adage “form follows function”. My primary focus is always on the client, their preferences and lifestyle. My job, as their designer, is to work

within that framework to come up with a creative solution that meets the brief by functioning smoothly, looking beauti-ful and staying on budget.

Q: What about the technical side?

A: I’m a very visual person, but don’t ask me to carry a tune! I’ve always had the ability to walk into any space and imagine it differently. After the client and I have discussed the fundamentals of layout, I like nothing better than to immerse myself in the drawings and renderings that will make up the initial presentation. Technical details make all the difference. They give a project that professional, custom designed look that separates it from being a cookie cutter. I think you Americans call it the “wow” factor. Once the overall configuration of the project has taken shape, decisions regarding selection of wood species, door style, stain, glaze or paint finishes

are simply the icing on the cake. I like to remind clients that even gold plated cabinetry would look bad in a poorly designed space!

Q: Finally, can you tell us about a project you’ve completed in your own home?

A: Last year we completely gutted our master bath. I love Travertine in a bath-room – it’s so functional yet beautiful. We used the same tile for the floor and the shower walls and then put a stone mosaic on the shower floor and repeated it as a listello border higher up. To add warmth, we finished the cabinetry and our existing doors and trim in a cherry chocolate glaze. We chose a transitional door style for the cabinetry and accented it with chrome hardware, small recessed low voltage spots and two very simple chrome framed wall mirrors mounted with pivoting hardware.

We converted the single lavatory into a double bowl matte cultured marble top and opted for chrome faucets and show-er fixtures to complete the stylish look. The overall affect is very comfortable and functional with clean lines but with-out feeling cold or too contemporary for the style of the house.

Ed. Sounds great! When can you start?

Since arriving from England in 2004, Clive has been transforming kitchens and baths throughout the Miami Valley one remodel project at a time. His work has been featured extensively in local publications.

enjoy life and aren’t afraid to take risks.

Instant connectionOver the years, Ann hasn’t been afraid to mix things up in her Kettering home. “I’ve redecorated the house several times,” she says. “It’s fun to redo different rooms and try new colors and designs.”

After nearly 25 years in the house, the Allens were ready to make a change in the kitchen. Other than a few minor upgrades, the kitchen consisted of the original light maple cabinets and beige flooring. “It worked for us for so many years, but it just didn’t fit with the rest of the house,” Ann says.

Initially, Ann was considering a black and brown color palette, but all that changed when she walked into the Cabinet Creations showroom. “I saw these red cabinets and instantly knew I had to have them,” she explains.

Ann met with Cabinet Creations owner Vicki Waker to work out the rest of the design plans. Mehaffie General Contracting was brought in to handle the renovation. “This kitchen fits her per-sonality to a ‘T.’ She’s vivacious and full of energy, and that shows through in the overall design,” Waker says.

Sleek and sassyThe frameless maple cabinets feature a Shaker-style door and a brick red stain. Unlike the red acrylic cabinets popular in Europe, these wood cabinets feature a muted, softer red hue. “Red is a tough color,” Waker says. “It’s important to remember that if you are using a dominating color like this, then pair it up with lighter hues. Natural light will also help keep the color from taking over.”

OPENING SPREAD: The back-splash is comprised of stainless

steel tile and helps establish the focal point in the kitchen. ABOVE: The maple cabinetry

boasts a brick red stain and Shaker-style frameless doors.

OPPOSITE TOP: A round stain-less steel base allows this end

of the island to appear to float. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: The

double ovens are recessed and angled on one side of the

kitchen to provide the optimum amount of space.

Page 39: Dayton Housetrends

Waker recessed the double ovens and refrigerator at an angle to add interest to the room. “We didn’t change the foot-print, but we provided so much more storage thanks to pullout and roller draw-ers, spice racks and appliance garages,” she points out.

Much of that storage resides in the angled center island. Home to a large stainless steel sink, the island, as well as the perimeter cabinetry, is topped with Espresso Caesarstone quartz counters. A floating glass countertop is angled around the island, providing the perfect spot for Ann to serve hors d’oeuvres during par-ties. “The glass countertop really finishes off the look of the island,” Waker says. “It also ties in all of the glass windows at the back of the house.”

Porcelain plank tiles, created to resemble wood, line the floor and bring out the dark brown hue of the countertops. Ann liked the look of wood, but didn’t want to have to worry about maintenance. This floor-ing gives her the warm, wood-look she wanted, but with the durability of tile.

Visual elementsThe focal point of the kitchen is the range. “This is where we tied the whole space together,” Waker says. “I wanted guests to walk into the kitchen and experience that wow factor.”

A backsplash comprised of stainless steel tile helps establish the focal point. Ann says she was very interested in incor-porating a stainless backsplash into the kitchen from the very beginning. “I was glad Vicki suggested the tile,” she adds. “I didn’t want a solid piece of stainless steel for the backsplash, I wanted something with a design.”

Glass-front wall cabinets with interior lights flank both sides of the stainless range hood, completing the overall look.

A polished kitchenWaker added other hints of stainless steel throughout the kitchen, from the appli-ances to the chrome cabinet hardware. Even the island has a hidden touch of stainless, thanks to a circular base. “This is a great element,” Ann says. “It appears as if the island is floating. We love the effect.”

Ann also made sure to tie the breakfast area in to the overall design. Mehaffie General Contracting created the small glass and metal breakfast table to comple-ment chairs Ann already owned. They also refaced a wood buffet cabinet with chrome panels. A canvas painting depict-ing an apple, which Ann purchased in Florida, adds an extra touch of red.

Waker commends Ann for not being afraid to create an edgy, one-of-a-kind design. “It was fun to create this space for her.”

“I love the kitchen,” Ann adds. “We had fun putting it all together and we now have fun cooking in it.”

that were all the rage 20 years ago are giving way to sleeker

styles and more functional form. Generously sized showers

are replacing bulky bathtubs and toilets and sinks, traditionally

positioned at lower levels, are getting upgrades to more real-

istic sizes that make their use more practical.

A new eraKevin McCloskey, CKBR, president of Craftsmen Home Improvements, has watched as bathrooms have evolved over the decades. Now in his 30th year of creating new baths for residents throughout Southwest Ohio, he has embarked on yet another new era of design. His most recent charge from clients is to transform tightly arranged baths into luxurious spaces of relaxation.

More often than not, it means gutting an entire bath and creat-ing a clean slate. That’s what McCloskey did when he was called into Tony and Amy Licata’s home in Centerville. The couple had used McCloskey a few years before to redo their first floor bath and was so pleased with his work that they were ready to give him a bigger chal-lenge: their master bath.

It’s a space that the couple uses every day, but one that Amy had come to dislike with its cramped design and outdated décor. The low seven-foot ceilings, small counter space and walled off toilet area made it seem more like a closet than a master bathroom.

“Their home was built around the early 80s and at that time builders were making large areas for tubs, putting in small showers and compartmentalizing the space,” McCloskey says. “Everything in the bathroom was split up with walls and doors.”

An open spaceMcCloskey’s new design called for the bath—which is 14½ feet long and nine feet wide—to be opened up. The toilet that sat in its own small room was exposed when all the interior walls were taken down. The large Whirlpool tub was taken out, leaving the perfect space for an over-sized shower. Meanwhile, the old shower was taken out and replaced with a smaller soaking tub.

With the interior walls gone, light can now shine in from a small window that had been tucked away above the toilet. The room’s ceilings were also raised by one foot, giving more emphasis to the existing skylight, while extra recessed lighting was installed to create a brighter space.

The original bath had a make-up desk that was rarely used and only seemed to make the counter much more cramped. The desk was removed, which allowed a longer vanity and opened up more room between the two sinks. The new van-ity, which reaches as high as any kitchen counter, is topped with Absolute Black granite.

The larger counter provided a new area for more storage in between the sinks. The white custom cabinets, made by Bertch Custom Cabinetry, include mirrored doors

that help the large vanity mirror flow from one end to the other. The sharp con-trast in color is one of Amy’s favorite parts of the bathroom. “I like white and I have just always felt like bathrooms should be white,” she says. “I also love the contrast it has with the black granite.”

The vanity also provided the perfect showcase for the antique glass jars that Amy enjoys collecting, but has never had a place to display. The jars, many of which are adorned with their original owner’s initials, have been collected over the years

from various trips she has made to flea markets and antique shops. Now, resting on the black granite, they help make the bathroom seem like a beautiful escape from the outside world.

A grand showerThe design and color of the new vanity area may draw a lot of attention, but the new shower gives it good competition. The tile, imported from Italy, creates a soft balance to the black and white across the room with its Mitica beige

color. McCloskey chose larger tile to help make the room look bigger and used it in the shower and on the floor throughout the room. The tile is also accented with a Himalaya Noce mosaic design.

The shower is now 6½ x 4 feet, providing plenty of room to enjoy a comfortable shower. The power jets built into the sides make it the perfect bathing experience. The glass walls around it help make the room feel larger and allow the beautiful tile to remain exposed.

Amy didn’t really love her home when she and her husband first bought it. The property was something that took Tony back to his childhood and he promised Amy that if they moved in, she would be able to redo it to her liking. Slowly over the years, Amy has moved her way through the house, making each room feel a little more like home.

The master bath was perhaps one of the most important pieces of making the final transformation. Though the other rooms invite and entertain those from outside, it’s the master bedroom and bath that become that special retreat for those who live there from day to day.

Just because summer is winding down doesn’t mean your social life should

go out like the coals on your summer barbeque! You may have

gathered around the grill and perched on the patio a lot this summer

season, but we bet you still have a hankerin’ to keep the fun alive this

fall. Whether you want to host a big blowout or simply want to hang

with the gang, you’ll keep the fun alive with these party ideas.

The “Pig Easy”If you want to go whole hog with your fall party, then you prob-ably want to consider a pig roast. Some might say a pig roast is the perfect “man party,” but most would also agree it’s a wondrous event. There’s something about gathering around the fire while the beast slowly rotates on the spit that gets your mouth waterin’ and tummy grumblin’!

For those who relish the idea of roasting the pig themselves, Spitjack.com bills itself as a website for “men who cook.” The company is the creation of a former chef-restaurateur from Worchester, MA and specializes in rotisseries, fire pits, meat injectors and just about any paraphernalia you could want for seriously good outdoor cooking. The only thing you can’t get from Spitjack.com is the hog itself, so you will need to locate a source for a whole fresh hog. Talk to a local butcher, or contact a Latin or Asian market to see about availability. Find out if the hog will arrive fresh or frozen and if it will be prepped (hair and internal organs removed) so you can allow sufficient time to defrost and marinate.

If roasting the pig yourself will only happen “when pigs fly” then hire a local company to cater your party with side dishes and all, so you can sit back and wallow in the fun!

Tailgate parties for home and away

Fall may be tailgate party season, but don’t think tailgating is only for those who have tickets to the game! Take the offensive approach and run with a tailgate party in your own driveway that is just as much fun as being “away” at the game as it is at “home” with friends and neighbors. For tailgate novices we offer a few additional ways to score the extra point at your own tailgate party.

Basic necessities for any tailgate include coolers, grills, chairs, radios/TVs, tables, plates, cups, utensils and napkins. If you want to go pro then visit Nationaltailgate.com or Americantailgater.com and find the ultimate in tailgating gear. These aficionados under-stand the passion of tailgating and offer relevant products for the most hardcore tailgater. Also check out Snackpalette.com for a disposable/recyclable plate that gives you a free hand for chant-ing and cheering while holding your plate, cup, fork and napkin in the other hand.

Now that we have plates, how about serving up grilled pizzas for a change? Simply replace your burgers and condiments with pizza toppings and ready-made pizza crusts and you can still easily serve a crowd. Ready-made pizza crusts should be grilled 2-4 minutes per side on an indirect flame, then add toppings and grill another 8-10 minutes. When choosing your toppings, be sure to offer a good selection of veggies and meats that will please everyone.

If you prefer to stick with grilled burgers and hot dogs, then why not treat your guests to a selection of gourmet toppings? There is a plethora of topping ideas available at Foodnetwork.com. For fun, create a menu board with topping combinations and name your sandwiches after the teams, their players or your friends at the party.

What’s all the fuss about? If your method of entertaining tends toward small and simple then the following fall entertaining options will suit your style just fine!

We’re fond of fondueNothing says “fall” better than bountiful amounts of food served on platters and ready for dipping into delectable cheese, choco-late and meat sauces. A traditional fondue party includes three fondue courses: a cheese fondue with bread and vegetables (don’t forget to include crisp, tart fall apples), followed by a course of meat and sauces and finishes with a chocolate dessert fondue with cake and fruits. Have fun with your guests by displaying a set of fondue rules like (1) no double dipping and (2) the person who drops food in the pot has to kiss the person next to him and so on. Accompany each course with a fall beverage such as apple cider, a full bodied ale or dark roast coffee. If you’d rather, you can simplify your fondue party by limiting it to one course of either a cheese fondue or dessert fondue and accompany it with the appro-priate appetizer wine or dessert wine. Learn everything you need to know about fondue, including how to choose a fondue set and accessories, recipes and fondue etiquette at Fonduebits.com.

Would you like to see the dessert menu?

Skip the main course and go right for the amazing desserts of the season with a “desserts only” party. Just think of the possibilities: pumpkin cheesecakes, praline chewy bars, applesauce spice cup-cakes, cranberry nut bread, just to name a few! With so many deli-cious options, now you just need to email your guests and ask each to make and bring one amazing fall dessert to share at the party. To insure you get a variety of desserts, ask each person to let you know what they will be bringing when they RSVP. End the party by giving each guest a bakery box or disposable take-home container so everyone can take home samples of the leftovers. Yum!

With so many great reasons to get together with friends and family, it’s no wonder fall is the season of plenty! Be sure to harvest the good times with friends and family in bountiful and tasty ways!
