Our serene and sensual region is surprisingly close to Melbourne.

You’ll reach the Macedon Ranges in 45 minutes on the Calder Freeway. On the Western Highway, you’ll make Bacchus Marsh in the same time. Either way, Daylesford is 90 minutes from Melbourne.

You know you deserve a break. You know it takes time to really relax and recharge. When you finish this guide,

you’ll know that this area’s abundant attractions can’t be fully appreciated in one day.

So… is there somewhere to stay?

We’re glad you asked. Our region offers a huge range of accommodation in villages, towns, countryside and bushland, for every taste and budget.

Choose retro cool, rustic country style or a chic boudoir. Rest in an architect-designed villa, a family-friendly holiday-house, or a boutique hotel. Stay in a grand old pub, a quaint miner’s cottage, or a resort with a pool, gym and tennis courts.

Perhaps the view matters to you? Look over a lake, a bush gully, or the main street. Watch the kangaroos gather in the paddocks at sundown, or gaze at a formal garden. Study the rows of a vineyard or the curves of a championship golf course.

A local, expert booking agent, can find the ideal base for your getaway. Then you can step onto the balcony or into a claw-footed bath; sit in the shaded courtyard or by the fire; and enjoy the exquisite furnishings and welcoming ambience.

FIND YOUR NICHE

› Couples relish self-contained privacy at Armley Park in Glenlyon; or in the villas of Hepburn at Hepburn.

› Families and groups relax at the Towerhouse in Hepburn Springs, Beckwith House at Clunes, or Mingela Homestead at Glenlyon.

› Luxury seekers gravitate to the gracious Bellinzona, or the stunning Saltus.

› Heritage lovers appreciate Campaspe House at Woodend, while wine enthusiasts savour The Grange at Lancefield.

Shizuka Ryokan Time out in a cafe

The ancient Romans understood the importance of relaxation and achieved it with style. So slip

off your toga and find a willing slave to run your bath and massage you with scented oils. You’ll emerge feeling much more civilised.

Since 1895, the Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa has soothed weary travellers. Try communal bathing in warm pools, fed from the underground mineral springs; take a private bath with your choice of aromatic additives; or experience the spa couches, steam room and salt therapy pool.

The day spas of Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges invite you to indulge in pampering packages. Enjoy a body wrap in chocolate, milk and honey, or mud. Sparkle after a skin scrub or facial, and treat your hands and feet to a makeover too.

Don’t want it to end? Stay over! Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat is a deluxe sanctuary in a 1930s guesthouse. Award-winning Shizuka Ryokan is an indulgent retreat in traditional Japanese style. Both have in-house spas offering holistic wellness treatments.

Mellow candlelight, warm water, plush towels, calming music, sensual perfumes, and the firm hands of a skilled masseur. When in Rome…

OTHER PATHS ALSO LEAD TO PEACE

› Remove tension through yoga at Rocklyn Ashram near Daylesford, or Illuminate Yoga Studio in Kyneton.

› Follow your nose to serenity: try aromatherapy.

› Meditate at The Spirit Within Centre in Kyneton; or dance to still your mind in a Moving Essence class at Woodend.

› If all else fails, contemplate nature - we have plenty around here.

Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop. (Ovid; 43BC-17AD)

Bacchus Marsh

From our fertile river valleys and rich volcanic soils, with the natural patience of country

people and knowledge acquired over generations, our skilled farmers cultivate a bountiful harvest.

As you travel across our region, you’ll pass contented cattle, laden vineyards, orchards and olive groves, and fields of flourishing crops, vegetables and herbs. Be sure to pause at farm gate stalls or cellar door tastings.

Well-bred, well-fed animals and sensational fresh produce attract chefs, restaurateurs, bakers and charcutiers of national status. Brewers, cider makers and vintners also excel.

The exceptional quality of our cuisine has been recognised with Chef ’s Hats from the Australian Good Food and Travel Guides; various national industry awards; ABC delicious. Produce Awards; appearances on Masterchef; and rave reviews in Australian and international media.

Regional foodie legends include Annie Smithers of Trentham’s Du Fermier and Alla Wolf-Tasker of the Lake House, Daylesford. Other hard-working local heroes are largely unsung: organic farmers and market gardeners; beekeepers; chook fanciers; makers of jams and preserves; pie, pudding or pasta producers; cheese makers; biscuit bakers and chocolatiers.

Meet them at farmers markets, and enjoy the fruits of their labour in providores, cafés and restaurants in our towns and villages.

A GOURMAND’S CALENDAR

› Spring brings options to celebrate wine with Sunbury Wine Festival in October, and Budburst in November.

› Try hands-on workshops run by farmers, producers and chefs at the Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Week Festival, during autumn.

› Enjoy market stalls and music when potatoes burst from underground seclusion into the limelight for Trentham’s Spudfest, in May.

› Be tickled pink at the springtime Strawberries and Cherries Weekend; or pick apples and stomp grapes at the autumnal Harvest Festival – both in Bacchus Marsh.

Try not to spend all day in the spa, or eating and drinking. Save time for energising activities, uplifting scenery, and

fascinating history.

Can you resist crying ‘Miranda!’ as you slip between the ancient, volcanic outcrops of iconic Hanging Rock? The famous film about Miranda and her fellow picnickers screens here annually.

Plunging 32 metres over basalt columns — also formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago — Trentham Falls are spectacular, especially after rain. Nearby, the Domino Trail follows the disused railway line for 6km from Trentham to Lyonville. It’s an all-weather path for walkers, pushbikes and horse riders.

Serious mountain bikers tackle the Goldfields Track, the Wombat Track near Woodend, or the Creswick Trails. There are interesting routes for bushwalkers too.

Meanwhile, at Malmsbury Botanic Gardens, it’s a short stroll past the ornamental lake to the astonishing viaduct over the Coliban River. 100m long and 25 metres high, this railway bridge, with five arches, was engineered from bluestone between 1858 and 1861.

Discover more local history at Kyneton Museum – the largest in the region. Daylesford and the surrounding villages also have lovingly curated heritage collections, telling the stories of Aboriginal tribes, European settlers, and goldrush migrants.

OUR REGION WILL ENRICH YOUR LIFE

Page 17: DAYLESFORD & THE MACEDON RANGES 2013-14 Official Visitors Guide

The creative urge is irresistible to the true artist, and nowhere more than in the inspiring landscapes and vibrant communities of the Macedon Ranges

and Daylesford region.

Scores of productive studios nestle in the bush, among the paddocks, or close to coffee shops. The annual Open Studios program allows access to artists at work, for discussion of motivations and techniques.

Myriad regional galleries cycle their displays of paintings, sculpture, jewellery, prints, ceramics, textiles, photographs and other expressions of the human experience. Simple, beautiful works fill craft markets at Hanging Rock, Daylesford, Trentham, Creswick and Malmsbury.

Musicians are also drawn to this environment. Gifted instrumental students and dancers train with experienced, resident teachers. Concerts range from grand and stirring – a choral performance by the Gisborne Singers, with orchestral accompaniment – to intimate and alluring – an evening cabaret at Lowland Farm.

The best of Australian touring theatre appears at Kyneton Town Hall – from children’s shows to bohemian burlesque. Amateur thespians take to the stage in the Mountview Theatre, or the Boilerhouse in Sunbury.

Meanwhile, reading clubs and writing groups abound, and independent bookshops host local authors for signings and seminars. So whatever your cultural passion, our stimulating region will enrich your inner life.

Shopaholics, be warned: the tantalising wares of our region’s retailers will ensnare even those with the strongest willpower.

Historic Piper Street in Kyneton is a well-paved road to temptation. Leather bags, Belgian linen, baskets, ceramics and glass, sleepwear, fragrances and candles – locally made and imported – entice from one side of the street. Antique and modern Persian and oriental rugs call you from the other side.

Irresistible items fill the seductive shops of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs too. Step into the magical Portal 108 for jewellery and other accessories by local artists. Browse the distinctive delights for family and friends at Greenmantle Gifts. Succumb to the softness of the garments at Alpaca Passion. Give in to the dark allure of handmade chocolates at Sweet Decadence.

If antiques and collectibles are your vice, you’ll find satisfaction in emporia throughout our region. Forget eBay or expensive city dealers – you’ve come to the source. Comb the laneways, attics, basements and courtyards of Lancefield, Romsey, Clunes or Creswick for classic and quirky pieces of the past.

Perhaps you like getting your hands dirty? Gardeners wander like souls in paradise through the lush nurseries of Gisborne, Macedon, Woodend, Tylden, Trentham and Blackwood.

SUNBURY & SURROUNDS

A HUMOROUS START TO A HALLOWED TRADITION

When the Australian cricket team had their first Test win on English soil in 1882, English cricket was mockingly declared ‘dead’. On Christmas Eve, Sir William Clarke hosted the English team at elegant Rupertswood Mansion and proposed a social match against a local side.

The English triumphed and their captain was presented with a small urn, reputedly containing the ashes of a burnt bail. This was a light-hearted gesture to commemorate England’s win. The rival national teams have battled for the Ashes ever since.

Today, Rupertswood Mansion offers guided tours and boutique accommodation.

Encircled by scenic countryside and historic sites, Sunbury is Melbourne’s closest wine region: 30 minutes from the

city centre. Savour cool climate vintages at cellar doors – such as Goona Warra Vineyard’s – or while dining at a local café or restaurant.

North of town, Emu Bottom is the oldest homestead in Victoria, built by squatter George Evans in 1836. Throughout the area, 19th century bridges, viaducts and churches constructed from distinctive local bluestone increase the sense of heritage. Sunbury is also the birthplace of the Ashes (see left).

A nearby destination for sports fans is Living Legends in Woodlands Historic Park – home to some of Australia’s finest retired racehorses, including Melbourne Cup winners.

If this sporting legacy inspires you to get active, tennis courts, golf courses and walking or cycling trails are handy. To further boost your health, visit Just Planet Café, where the menu features organic produce, grown in the backyard. Or sample award-winning olive oil from the groves of Pitruzzello Estate.

With Melbourne Airport only 20 minutes away, Sunbury’s abundant natural beauty may surprise. Numerous reserves and waterways are home to kangaroos, echidnas, platypus, native birds, frogs and wildflowers; so pack a picnic, take a stroll, and find natural peace.

Fire and water — mineral-rich lava and rivers carrying organic silt — created fertile Moorabool Shire, only 45

minutes from Melbourne’s CBD.

Festivities herald spring and autumn harvests, and fresh produce is proudly sold by growers, at stalls along the striking Avenue of Honour in Bacchus Marsh. Farm gate signs invite you to pick your own juicy berries or crisp apples.

In the mountaintop village of Blackwood, the heavenly Garden of St Erth surrounds its sandstone homestead – a serene remnant of a once bustling gold-rush town. The well-stocked Blackwood Merchant and Providore and a reputedly haunted pub add character to this forest hamlet.

At Ballan, trees from the ‘old country’ shade historic cottages and the meandering Werribee River inspires relaxation on its banks. A thriving artistic community fills local galleries and cafés with diverse creations. There’s sculpture on rooftops too – watch out for eccentric weathervanes.

Country attitudes create quirky shopping experiences at Gordon. The Shambles bursts with antiques and collectables, while the Gordon Hat Shoppe, in the restored colonial church, offers dashing headwear.

When you’ve found the right hat, go for a drive or a walk, or go fishing: scenic roads, verdant forests, ancient gorges and deep lakes are all at hand.

The vibrant City of Melton blends urban and rural lifestyles, creating wide-ranging recreational options. ‘Hot to trot’ harness racing, shows and music enliven Tabcorp Park. Golfers find paradise at the Eynesbury and Melton Valley Clubs. Families keep cool at Melton Waves. Wine-lovers relish tastings at Galli and Witchmount Estates.

Meanwhile, passionate local groups nurture nearby wonders for natural enjoyment. Pinkerton Forest is a precious remnant of the grassy eucalypt woodlands that once covered much of Victoria. White-bellied Sea Eagles nest here, amongst other rare species. Dramatic Werribee River Volcanic Gorge also provides habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including shy platypus.

TRAVEL SAFE THIS SUMMER

Remember to always check more than one source of fire information. Visit cfa.vic.gov.au, call 1800 240 667, check the FireReady app, listen to local radio, talk to your host and visit an accredited Visitor Information Centre.

Summer is the perfect time to discover regional Victoria. Wind down and enjoy

Victoria’s breathtaking scenery and diverse natural environments knowing you’ve taken a few simple steps to stay bushfire safe.

› Know which weather district you are visiting so you can check the Fire Danger Rating for that district and if there are any fire restrictions.

› On hot, dry, windy days, check Fire Danger Ratings and warnings. Fires can start and spread quickly on these days and parks and forests may be closed.

› Check if a Total Fire Ban has been declared for the area you are visiting.

› Check the weather, and listen to local radio for advice and warnings.

› Download the FireReady app.

› Save the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (1800 240 667) to your mobile phone.

› Don’t rely on electronic mapping devices. Mobile phones and GPS may be affected by smoke and local conditions. Make sure you carry hard copy local maps and listen to the radio.

› Visit an accredited Visitor Information Centre. Staff may be able to suggest alternative holiday activities on high risk days and provide local fire and park information.

› Never travel into a high risk bushfire area where a Code Red Fire Danger Rating has been declared or where fires are burning.

WHAT IS A TOTAL FIRE BAN?

A Total Fire Ban sets legal restrictions on activities that may start a fire, including restrictions on barbecues and campfires.

WHAT ARE FIRE DANGER RATINGS?

Fire Danger Ratings tell you how dangerous a fire would be if one started.
