Time of Confession Invitation to Confession Prayer of Confession

God of Pentecost, we confess that we have not been good vessels for the work of your Spirit. We have not waited for the Spirit’s inspira-tion in our prayers. We have not relied on the Spirit’s direction in our actions. We have not listened for the Spirit’s still small voice in our conversations. Forgive us, Lord, for denying the power of Pentecost. Pour out your Spirit upon us, and fill us with your life sustaining breath. Lord, hear our confession and those we offer in the silence…(a silence is kept). In the name of the risen Lord we pray, Amen.

A Note From Rev. Dr. Paul J. KirbasDear Congregation,

Today is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost was the birth of the church. On that day, God poured out his Spirit upon the disciples who were huddled together in a locked room. The outpouring of the Spirit caused them to run out of their doors and out into the wider community to share the Good News of the Gospel. The Church was born!

I think Pentecost Sunday is a very fitting day for what is planned for our church this year. After two years of discernment, prayer, study, and testing the waters, the time has come for us to make a decision concerning the assimilation of the Connecting Point Campus and therefore becoming a two-campus church. In many ways, our decision is about going out our doors into the wider community of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. In many ways, we are being asked to birth a new church, as Westminster would become something new. We would become an entity, not a facility. Westminster would no longer be defined as a building on 44th and Shartel. It would be defined as a congregation that performs its ministry on both a central and a northwest campus.

So, like the early disciples, we too are being sent out our doors. Like the early disciples, we too are invited to experience the birth of the church. This year, Pentecost Sunday is our Pentecost Sunday!

The session has called a congregational meeting to be held immediately following the 10:30 AM service today. The motion that will be presented will be that the session recommends to the congregation that the Plan of Assimilation be approved and that the

congregation recommends approval of the Plan of Assimilation to Indian Nations Presbytery at its June 2, 2018 presbytery meeting. The congregation of Connecting Point Presbyterian Church will hold a congregational meeting on the same day, almost the same time, and with the exact same motion.

The Committee on Ministry of Indian Nations Presbytery has already approved the assimilation plan and is ready to recommend approval at the next Presbytery meeting provided that both congregations approve the motion. If that occurs, then the Presbytery will be asked to approve the assimilation at the June 2 meeting. Once this occurs, the assimilation is put in motion. Legal and real estate processes will be put in place to close the Connecting Point Church as a legal identity and transfer all buildings, property, and other assets to Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Connecting Point property will then be re-opened under its new identity, which will be “Connecting Point, the Northwest Campus of Westminster Presbyterian Church.”

All of this will be put in motion by the congregational meetings to be held today. On this special Sunday, let us celebrate the Pentecost moment of the early church, and to help decide on the Pentecost moment in our church.

Welcome to Pentecost Sunday!

In God’s Love,

Dr. Paul J KirbasPastor / Head of Staff

For Women – Summer Book Read – You are invited to Girls of Grace to read and reflect on Kate Bowler’s NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER book, Everything Happens For A Reason –And Other Lies I Have Loved. Kate Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School. She specialized in the study of the prosperity gospel until her life and theology are turned upside-down and inside-out by the diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer. Her book is an honest journey of both the destruction and rebuilding of her faith. Join us on Wednesdays, June 13 -27 to discuss the book at 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. You can register and find more information in the Garden Court.
