Davis, California is an active and vibrant cityknown for its progressiveness, conservationprograms and quality educational institutions.Home to the University of California, Davisand in convenient proximity to both the
Sacramento and Bay Area regions, Davis has a vast amountof amenities and resources, yet has a definite small-townstyle. Nearly all of California is within a one-daydriving distance from Davis. Located inYolo County, in the Central Valley ofnorthern California, Davis is situated 11miles west of Sacramento, 385 miles
north of Los Angeles and 72 miles northeast of SanFrancisco. Davis is just 15 minutes from the state capital,museums and other metropolitan attractions. To the eastof the city lie the Sacramento and American rivers alongwith historic gold country, Lake Tahoe and the SierraNevada Mountain range. The San Francisco Bay area,the redwood forests and the Pacific Ocean are to thewest. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region lies tothe south.

The first city (2005) to receive the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle FriendlyCommunities Award at the Platinum level,Davis has become a national model for theintegration of bicycling into the
infrastructure of the community. In the 1960s, citizenslobbied for lanes to make bike travel safer. Ever since1967, bike transportation in Davis has been oriented tobicycling with approximately 33 percent of residentsusing bikes as their primary mode of transportation.

In 2010, the Davis Farmers’ Market iscelebrating its 34th year. In 2009, it was voted as America’sFavorite Farmers’ market by more than 10 percent of nationalvoters and was bestowed the award by the AmericanFarmland Trust. The market has a permanent location andstructure located in Central Park with hours on Wednesdayafternoons and Saturday mornings.
Davis is known for its innovation in the fields ofbiotechnology, medicine and other life sciences. Two
examples include: Marrone Bio Innovations, whichdiscovers, develops and markets effective andenvironmentally responsible natural products that focuson unmet needs for weed, pest and plant diseasemanagement, and Schilling Robotics, a leadingproducer of high technology systems for subseaexploration and production.
Especially connected with the University of California, Davis,the community’s contributions to agriculture and animalhusbandry are many.
As of 2008, more than 67 percent of the citizens of Davispossessed a college degree of a Bachelor of Arts or higher.
The community is known for its liberal politics and a uniquepolitical style that has evolved over time. Davis has a politicaltradition that combines progressive politics with a strong urgeto preserve inherited small-town values.

Davis Sights To See
Farmers’ MarketT
he Davis Farmers’ Market wasstarted in 1975 by a small group oflocal organic farmers andcommunity members. It wascreated with the objective to
support local farmers while providingconsumers with fresh, locally grown produce.The creation of the DFM was closelyconnected with the establishment of the DavisFood Co-Op, and in 1976, the City of Davispassed an ordinance to create an officialframework for the DFM to operate within thecity. After the California Department of Foodand Agriculture established statewideregulations for direct marketing and certification of farmers’markets in 1977, it became one of the first four certifiedfarmers’ markets in the state.
The Davis Farmers’ Market is now among the largest farmers’markets in California, with an average of 85 vendors everySaturday. Over the course of the year, 180 different vendorsattend the market. Operating year-round, the Saturdaymarket attracts 5,000 to 7,000 people each week, and up to10,000 during special events.
The market still operates in its original Central Park location,but many improvements have been made to the park. For
instance, in 1984, a covered structurewas built by the city of Davis, whichnow houses a large portion of themarket’s vendors and makes year-round operation more viable.
The market has become such animportant part of the Daviscommunity that today it is difficultfor many people to imagine thecommunity without the market. An area of the market open tocommunity groups and politicalorganizations and candidates has
given a strong voice to local politics and community issues.
Weekly events at the market, such as cooking demonstrationswith food tasting and free recipes, provide education for thecommunity about nutrition, diet, health and agriculture.

History
The city of Davis, founded in 1868, wasoriginally named Davisville after prominentlocal farmer Jerome C. Davis. At that time,Davisville was a little village centered ongrain crops and a train depot. According to
the Woodland Democrat newspaper, Davisville wasconsidered “the liveliest station on the California PacificRailroad.”
When a shift began from dry crops to irrigatedagriculture, Davisville began exporting apples, peachesand lettuce, and with the aid of refrigerated train cars,Davisville farmers were able to meet the need of growingpopulations. After the addition of a new farming college,Davisville began to thrive.
The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is closelytied to the city’s history. In the early 1900s, California’surban areas were growing and demands were placed notonly on agriculture, but on the dairy industry for large-scale butter production. With a need to improve thescience of butter-making and other farming methods, acampaign began to establish a new school for agriculturalinstruction and research. In 1908, the University FarmSchool was established. From those beginnings, UC Davisis now recognized internationally for its contributions tolife sciences, agriculture, veterinary medicine,
biotechnology, medicaltechnology and engineering.
The university’s inception was a major turning point forDavisville. The Davisville Post Office shortened the city’sname to Davis, and the revision became official when thecity was incorporated in March 1917. Soon urbanamenities such as a water and sewage system, streetlighting and street paving were installed. Many localimprovements began, including the construction of amunicipal building and the first city park. In the mid-1900s, the population grew rapidly, with UC Davis beinga major generator of growth. Unlike many other cities,Davis resisted pressure to build expansive shoppingcenters, instead adopting policies to preserve its small-town feel. In the late 20th century, Davis began to focuson environmental conservation and the future shape ofthe city.
With a current populace of approximately 71,000, Davishas evolved into a community internationally known forits commitment to environmental awareness and theemployment of progressive and socially innovativeprograms. What was once a small farming village is now aremarkable city, proud of its past and looking forward to abright future.

avis residents have achieved the highest level ofcollective education in the state of California. Morethan 80 percent of the adult population hascompleted a minimum of one year of college, morethan 60 percent have achieved at least a four-year
degree and more than 30 percent have earned a post-graduatedegree. It’s no wonder that superior educational opportunities area priority in Davis.
With quality teachers and parents playing an integral role in theeducational process, Davis has one of the best public schoolsystems in the area. Education from kindergarten through grade12 is offered by the Davis Joint Unified School District. Its strongcore educational program is complemented by the inclusion ofdramatic arts, music, library programs, advanced placementclasses, lifestyle issues, athletics and computer education.
The Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE) offers a wide rangeof services including operating schools for severely disabledchildren. Whether assisting a child working to overcome a speechdisability or providing support to the visually or hearing impaired,
YCOE uses anumber ofresources toaid andenhance thelearning process for those with specialneeds. The community also promotes conservation efforts throughsolar-powered traffic signals and electric vehicles with chargingstations. Additionally, Davis has tree-lined streets that are notonly beautiful, but provide shade in the summer and retain heatduring the winter. The historic Avenue of Trees, lining RussellBoulevard for more than a mile west of Highway 113, includesmajestic black walnut trees planted before 1880.
Numerous streets in Davis are quaint with older homes full ofcharacter and history. Many of Davis’ homes were built in the1950s and 1960s, and with conservation and preservation inmind, new development has been carefully planned. One ofthese new developments is Mace Ranch on the east side of thecity, with approximately 5,800 newer homes. Wildhorse, amaster-planned community, has a golf course, parks and is hostto many executive-style homes with four bedrooms or more.Lake Alhambra offers gorgeous custom homes encompassing aman-made lake.
Additionally, programs for affordable housing and workforcehousing are available. Housing prices in Davis are generallyhigher than the rest of the Greater Sacramento Area. This canbe attributed to many reasons, including an excellent quality oflife, a low crime rate, a premier local school system, thepresence of UC Davis and a convenient location on the I-80corridor between Sacramento and the Bay Area.
