Happy 2017!The thrill about turning over a new calendar page each January is looking
forward to all the positive and hopeful things the new year promises. Are you
someone who makes resolutions each year? Lots of folks do, many with the best
of intent and determination. Others will go even further and make definite plans,
complete with dates, details and other specifics needed to turn those plans into
reality. Some of us even bring friends or family into the picture and get them to
share our commitments for the coming year. I know that whenever I set a goal, it
has a much better chance of happening if it’s specific and public than if I simply
keep it to myself. The idea is that there’s strength in numbers. Help others, and let
others help you! Working together with the support and experience of our building
service providers for a common goal and to help one another achieve them really
works. This year, we have set our goals to survey the building exterior window
glazing seals (Honolulu Glass) and repair a major drain line located beneath
Alakea Street (Commercial Plumbing). We have additional building projects
currently in the planning stages and we look forward to sharing the exciting news
with you soon.
We hope that you find our newsletter helpful and we encourage your
comments and suggestions, so please feel free to email me at
[email protected] or stop by the management office located on
the ground floor in Suite 117.

02 | TAX SERVICES OF HAWAII
It’s your money. You worked hard for it, and you earned it. But, how do you know you’re keeping as much of it as you can? That’s where Tax Services Hawaii comes in. This Kamaaina owned and operated tax and accounting firm specializes in maximizing your income and minimizing your tax liabilities. They provide expert advice to both individuals and businesses. Their services include tax preparation, estate planning, small business accounting, payroll, new business formation, and much more. Tax Services of Hawaii is led by Gorden Gates, a local boy from Molokai. Gorden's team is experienced, hands-on, and driven to provide you with the best service possible. If you’re unhappy with your present tax preparer, or maybe you just want a second opinion, give them a call. After all, it’s your money.
Here’s a short Q&A with the folks from Tax Services Hawaii.
Tax season is upon us. What advice do you have for those of us scrambling to get our returns done?
Find someone you can trust, someone who has your best interest in mind. A lot of “seasonal” tax preparers will take the information you give them, then simply enter it into a tax preparation software program. The program will then spit out the return, and they’re done. It looks professional, but did
you maximize your deductions? Could you have done something differently beforehand to minimize your tax liabilities? A software program is designed with the average person in mind. We look at your entire financial picture, then find ways to use the tax laws to your advantage. More importantly, we’re always here for you, providing guidance throughout the year, not just at tax time.
What advice do you have for us after tax season is done?
It’s important to remember that there are tax implications throughout the year, not just during tax season or year-end, which is when most people think of taxes. Preparation is key. We’ll help you anticipate and plan for tax implications throughout the year, so that when tax season rolls around, you’re what we call, “tax-ready.”
How’d you decide to open your office in the Davies Pacific Center?
We originally had our office in the See Dai Doo Society Building, near Pali Longs. As our business grew, we needed more space, so we looked at various office buildings in the downtown area. We chose Davies as it was easily accessible to our clients, parking is excellent, and the building management and security are great.
We’ve also enjoyed meeting many of our fellow tenants. Everyone has been so friendly and supportive.
Speaking of fellow tenants, is there anything else you’d like to mention to them?
Yes. First of all, thank you for welcoming us to Davies! And, secondly, if you or your business is in need of an experienced tax preparer, or if you have any questions regarding your tax returns, please stop by and see us for a FREE consultation. Just call or email to make an appointment. We can meet in person or discuss your situation over the phone. No obligation. If we can help, great! If not, we’ll point you in the right direction.

This is not your standard taco restaurant. BIC Tacos is the real deal! It’s hard to pick a favorite item off the menu, they’re all fantastic! Their menu includes burritos, tacos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, nachos, and more. Their specialty though, is the Mission Style burritos, the ones that became famous during the 1960s in the Mission District of San Francisco. Try one of these and you’ll see why New York-based writer Calvin Trillin described them as, “….refined and embellished in much the same way that the pizza has been refined and embellished in Chicago.” This you have to try. Another crowd favorite is the Super Nachos. A huge plate heaped high with fresh chips, your choice of meat, plus rice, beans, Pico de Gallo, grilled onions & peppers, sour cream, cilantro, and salsa. All this, for just $8.99! The Davies location is the third BIC Tacos restaurant, the other two located in the Kapolei Commons and Hickam Airfield. Check them out on the ground floor facing Merchant Street, between Domino’s and Long’s Drugs.
Here’s a short Q&A with Michael Weinstein, owner of BIC Tacos.
What would you recommend to a first-time customer?
Our most popular item is our burrito bowls, but for a first-timer, I’d recommend our Slow-Roasted Pork
Shoulder Burrito. We roast the meat overnight for 12 hours, so it’s tender and flavorful. And, for just $8.99, it’s a great deal. We’ve also recently introduced a breakfast burrito for $4.77, which has been really popular as well.
Tell us about some of your specials.?
We have a “Happy Hour” special every day from 4pm to 6pm. Order a burrito or three tacos, and you’ll receive FREE chips and salsa. Then, there’s $10 Tuesdays, where you’ll get FREE Haagen-Dazs ice cream with any purchase of $10 or more.
Do you deliver to Davies tenants?
Yes, we do party platters and catering, and will deliver to our fellow Davies tenants at no charge. Just call a day in advance. We’ve had a number of Davies tenants order platters for their client meetings. It’s something different, and everyone loves a great taco.
How did you come to choose the Davies building for your third BIC Taco location?
We were looking for a downtown location, and Davies was perfect. It’s a well-known building, and geographically well-positioned. We like that it’s in downtown, but also near the growing Kakaako area.
Is there anything else you’d like to mention to your fellow Davies tenants?
Thank you to all who have stopped by to try our food, and we look forward to serving those of you who haven’t. We’d also like to extend our “Five Dollar Friday” deal to all Davies tenants. You can get two Street Tacos and a fountain drink for just $5! Just clip out the coupon in this newsletter and bring it in. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Over the Edge Hawaii 2016
On November 5, 2016, our team supported local Special
Olympics Hawaii athletes by rappelling 40 stories down
the side of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort &
Spa for the annual Over the Edge fundraising event. We
experienced what it felt like to be on the rooftop of the
Hyatt Regency…look 400 feet down…and then go Over
the Edge!
Special Olympics athletes overcome challenges on a daily
basis so we decided to challenge ourselves and make a
commitment to raise as much as we could for the 3,000
children and adults with intellectual disabilities who
participate in Special Olympics sports and competitions.
The more we can raise, the more we can help with
ensuring that people with intellectual disabilities have
opportunities to improve their lives on and off the playing
field — through sports, health, wellness and leadership
programs — at no cost to them or their families.
Project Focus Hawaii
Davies Pacific Center is proud to support ProjectFocus
Hawaii, Inc., a non-profit organization giving at-risk children
and others with challenges a healing voice through the
medium of photography. We hope you enjoyed ProjectFocus
Hawaii’s most recent exhibit, Crossing Bridges, on our
Mezzanine level this past January.
