Thank you for all the continued positive feedback regarding Sports and Activities Directory. It never fails to put a smile on my face and a spring to my step when I am stopped at my local grocery store, at a school or elsewhere in the community and thanked for providing residents with a wealth of information. One of my favorite things to do is to showcase the successes and achievements made by community members. We have some pretty amazing people doing some pretty amazing things right here in our own backyard; it is always a pleasure to give them some well-deserved recognition.

We all have different motivations for making the choice to begin our multisport lifestyle. Mine started after running a marathon years ago and just wanted something more. Others have been motivated by weight loss (some really extreme!). Yet, a few want to prove that Anything is Possible.
While toeing the start line of an endurance event might be the beginning of your individual race journey, training to get there doesn’t have to be a solo effort. With the support and camaraderie of a triathlon club, you can enhance the voyage to the finish and gain like-minded friends along the way.
Not sure a club environment is right for you? Read on, and doubt no more.
ALL AGES AND ABILITIES Whether you’re just starting out or consistently topping the podium, clubs have something for everyone. Newbies gain confidence and valuable tips of the trade, while speed demons have a group to challenge their fast-twitch muscles. And with clubs available for any age (kids through masters), membership can truly be a family affair.
NEVER FINISH ALONE While race day is about individual effort, sporting your team’s colors brings a flash of spirit and inspiration. Hearing the cheers of teammates on course provides a boost to carry you through the miles ahead, and after crossing the finish line, trading war stories makes victory feel even sweeter.
TRAINING PARTNERS GALORE Say goodbye to solitary sweat sessions and dive into group workouts. Triathlon clubs have no shortage of athletes looking to head out for a brick (bike and run sequence) workout or an open water swim. As an added bonus, organized workouts and scheduled partner training helps boost accountability to push beyond your limits.
GEAR GURUS Looking for a recommendation on a reliable GPS watch, fast wheels or energy gels? Don’t fret; just ask around. It’s no secret that triathletes love the latest gear. Belonging to a triathlon club means you’ll have access to real-life gear testers with firsthand product experience. You’ll never have to make a purchase again without consulting fellow racers.
EXPERIENCE ADVANTAGEAre you searching for a race with incredible scenery or one with no hills? A group of triathletes brings a variety of race experiences to the table. Picking the brains of peer racers means you’ll be able to make the best registration decision based on your strengths and preferences.
Ready to join a club, but not sure where to begin? Florida, with its ideal weather, is a mecca for triathletes and there are many fun and thriving clubs in the state. One of the most recent is the newly formed Fort Lauderdale Triathletes. With successful clubs to the north and south, FLT was formed to perpetuate a healthy lifestyle, through the collaboration of Multi-Sport athletes. It is based on a culture of inclusion, support, and fellowship, through training, racing, and social interaction.
In only one season, it has grown to 75 athletes strong thanks to support of the membership and its generous sponsors. Fort Lauderdale Triathletes is an official USAT (USA Triathlon) and IRONMANTM TriClub team. Its members enjoy regular clinics/socials and “voluncheering” for each other and the tri-community at large. All members receive discounts from the sponsors and on select endurance races.

Happy New Year, Davie! As I reflect on 2015 and the great year we had at the Town of Davie,
it’s time to look forward to all of the great programs and events offered by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department in 2016!
This year, we are participating in the nation-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Project. We encourage you to join us for “a Day On, not a Day Off”
service project at Wolf Lake Park (5400 SW 76th Ave) on Sunday, January 17th from 9:00am – noon. We plan to perform trail maintenance, trash pick-up, and a painting
project. Please pre-register by calling (954) 797-1163.Following the MLK Day of Service Project, we will kick off our Annual Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Picnic Celebration from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at Potters Park (4300 SW 57th Terrace). The celebration will include youth entertainment, guest speakers, a children’s
poetry contest, a petting farm, children’s activities and more! Food and refreshments will also be available throughout this great event.
Can you believe that we are preparing for the 79th Annual Orange Blossom Festival? It feels like just yesterday that I began participating in the parade in 1974. I encourage everyone to join us as we celebrate the Town of Davie’s history and culture during the three day festival, scheduled for Friday, February 26th through Sunday, February 28th. Friday night will kick off the weekend with a concert at the Old Davie School House at 6:30pm. Saturday we will begin the festival at 10:00am as the community parade travels south down Davie Road from SW 39th Street to Orange Drive. This year’s parade theme is “Oldie Goldies Blossom in Cowboy Town.” Following the parade, stay for a full day of musical performances, community performances, exhibits, vendors, food, and fun! At 7:30pm on Saturday and 2:00pm on Sunday the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo takes place at the Bergeron Arena where cowboys and cowgirls compete in competitions that include bull riding, bareback riding, cattle wrestling, barrel racing, and team cattle roping. Join us in Cowboy Town for a great weekend full of fun and great entertainment!
If you love Cultural Arts, then you don’t want to miss the Actors Community Theatre (ACT) rendition of “Death Trap” by Ira Levin, which will be held February 12th – 21st
at the Pine Island Multi Purpose Facility. Our Spring Egg Hunt will be hopping over to its new location at the
Bamford Sports Complex at Pine Island Park on Saturday, March 26th. Activities will begin at 9:00am with Egg Hunts beginning at 10:00am. We will have hunts for children ages 1–8 years old. Children can also participate in activities such as a petting farm, hay ride, bounce houses, a climbing wall and more! For event information please call (954) 797-1076.

On behalf of the Cooper City Commission and its employees, I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy 2016! The time has come again for me to provide you with updates on various projects
and activities happening within Cooper City. I am happy to share news that the Mayor’s Chess Challenge has been a huge
success. Educators and community leaders have made a commitment to expand chess as a means of improving educational outcomes for the children of Broward County.
The National Scholastic Chess Foundation is working with local partners to establish sustainable in school and after school chess programs. Mayors throughout Broward County
have elected to conduct chess challenges to help develop student’s self-esteem and critical thinking skills. Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome to attend these events.
Cooper City’s next “complimentary” Chess Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th, from 9:00am – 11:00am at the Pool & Tennis Center, 11600 Stonebridge Parkway.
The second Senior Expo has been scheduled for Saturday, January 16th at the Cooper City Community Center, 9090 SW 50th Place, from 9:30am until 1:30pm. This event is a complimentary showcase of activity programs, resources, products and services that will
be beneficial to the senior lifestyle. Everyone is encouraged to stop by to meet the program instructors, learn about City services, and gather information from vendors on medical services. Retirement opportunities and wellness information will also be provided.
On Friday, January 22nd, the Annual Father-Son Adventure Night will be held. This event is open to K-5th grade Cooper City children and will be held at the Community Center, 9000 SW 50th Place, beginning at 6:30pm. The cost is $12 per person/$10 per additional son. As your Mayor, I am proud to officiate the Say “I Do Again” Marriage Vow Renewal Ceremony on Thursday, February 11th. This romantic ceremony will begin at 6:30pm at a cost of $5 per couple. Cooper City residents are encouraged to invite their friends and neighbors to participate in this renewal of vows. Tickets are available at the Community Center and at the Pool & Tennis Center beginning Monday, January 4th.
Cooper City residents are invited to “show off your talent” by participating in Cooper City’s Got Talent on February 19th! Singers, dancers and musicians are encouraged to participate in this fun-filled evening. Be the first to pick up an audition form from the Community Center. Tickets will be available beginning on Wednesday, February 3rd at a cost of $4 in advance/$5 at the door. Seating is limited so purchase your tickets early.
March events begin with the Cooper City Spring Community Garage Sale to be held at the Sports Complex, on Saturday, March 5th from 7am until Noon. Cooper City households are allowed one space, at a cost of $21.20. Registration begins on Tuesday, February 2nd at 6:30pm at the Community Center, 9000 SW 50th Place.
The Community Book Swap will take place on March 11th, at the Community Center, from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. (Kid’s only time begins at 5:30pm) Drop off all your slightly used books during the week of March 7th – 10th at the Community Center and/or Pool & Tennis Center. At that time, you’ll receive a ticket for the number of books donated to exchange for books on March 11th.
The Cooper City Richardson 5K Run/Walk & one-mile fun run/walk will be held on Sunday, March 13th at the Cooper City Sports Complex. Registration for this event begins February 1st at a cost of $25 for 5K Pre-Registration/$30 Race Day. The cost for the 5K Pre-Registration 14 & under is $15, on Race Day it will be $20. The 1-Mile Run/Walk is a $10 charge.
On Thursday, March 24th at the Pool & Tennis Center, the Twilight Teen Egg Hunt will be held from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. All Cooper City students in grades 6, 7 & 8 are welcome to participate in the complimentary event. Don’t forget to bring along your flashlight. Reservations must be made beginning on March 23rd, 4pm.
The Annual Egg-Citing Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 26th beginning at 10:00am Sharp. The egg hunt will be held at the Cooper City Sports Complex and is open to Cooper City children in the 5th Grade and under.
Lastly Cooper City’s 57th Founder’s Day Parade & Festivities will be conducted on Saturday, April 30th. For information pertaining to this event, please call the Recreation Department at (954) 434-4300 Extension #233.

I have written articles before about the use and abuse of cell phones. This article will cover a related, but different view. The definition of self-esteem is a feeling of satisfaction that someone has in himself or herself and his or her own abilities (Merriam-webster.com). It is something that we all strive for in our children. We provide them with dance lessons, sports leagues, musical instruction and academic opportunities to help them reach a higher potential. Something has changed the rules of the parenting game. Technology.
Technology is advancing at an astonishing rate. Many of us remember a time when cell phones, home computers, emails and…. social media did not exist. The “dark ages.” The advances have changed our lives in beneficial ways. We can find information in seconds, connect with family and friends and the business applications appear endless.
The area that concerns me centers on social media. While it serves as a great method to connect, it comes at cost. Both children and adults alike focus on the events that they are NOT invited to. The party they did not know about, the friend that did something without them. When a relationship ends (break ups, loss of friendships) individuals preoccupy themselves with the page of their lost relation. The pain that comes from
these and similar behaviors is unnecessary and has been intensified by ease of technology.
Cell-f esteem however is the use of social media to present an image of who and what we are. This includes frequent postings, sharing of pictures, taking selfies and constant updates of where one is, what they are doing and who they are with. Individually, each of these events are positive ways of sharing one’s life. But what happens when it becomes the main way that a child or young adult sees their life? Can it become the focus of an individual’s socialization to the exclusion of finding genuine enjoyable experiences?
Research will help to answer these questions, but if it is an area that is already causing concern, there is a way to improve our children’s use of and dependency on their electronic devices. Simply put, use yourself as a role model. Take one week and remain aware of how often you answer your texts, calls and notifications while around your children. Then, reduce your behaviors while sharing with your family why you are making the change. In the upcoming weeks you will be more aware and be able to have them do the same.

Support our local Irish Community while enjoying a fun filled day celebrating the legendary life of Saint Patrick!
Born in the fifth century, Saint Patrick was kidnapped from Britain at the young age of sixteen and brought to Ireland as a slave. He is best known for bringing Christianity to Ireland and for explaining the Holy Trinity using a Shamrock or a “Three Leaf Clover” as we refer to it in the United States. He is also credited for driving the snakes from Ireland, which is believed by most to mean that he put an end to the pagan practice of worshipping serpents. Saint Patrick became known as the Patron Saint and National Apostle of Ireland.
Around the ninth or tenth century the Irish began celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17th, the day of Saint Patrick’s death. Surprisingly, the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place, not in Ireland, but in the United States on March 17, 1762 when a group of Irish soldiers enlisted in the English military, marched through New York City honoring the life of Saint Patrick. As a result, Saint Patrick’s Day was born and now more than 100 Saint Patrick’s Day parades occur across the United States annually. One of those parades will be held in Hollywood, Florida.
For the 18th year, Downtown Hollywood will be transformed into a sea of green to celebrate. This year, the festivities will take place on Sunday, March 13th from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. The event features a traditional float parade beginning at 1:00pm. A vast assortment of floats, pipe bands, marching bands and local businesses participate in the parade along with the famous New York Police Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums. Follow the excitement as the parade makes its way through historic downtown Hollywood beginning at Harrison Street and returning to 21st Avenue. Plan to arrive early for best viewing locations along the parade route.
But don’t worry – the fun doesn’t end there! After the parade, check out two award-winning bands. The headliner will be Emish, a high-powered rock band with Irish Heart. UV, the U2 Tribute Band will also be on hand to liven things up with your favorite U2 songs, old and new. Both performances will take place on the stage at 19th Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.
If you’re looking for something to keeps the kids entertained, they’ll love Emerald Isle Fantasy Land located inside Anniversary Park. There will be a variety of games and crafts for the little ones, which means plenty of photo ops for parents!
The event is sponsored by the Hibernians, a 501c3 Community Organization that was re-established in 2010 for the purpose of raising funds for downtown Hollywood’s annual cultural event and Irish Festival. COOPER CITY RIDERS A small informal group of local cyclists that meets at 7:00am on Saturday mornings in the parking lot of the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center behind the Tuesday Morning Store. They ride to Hollywood Beach, stop for coffee on the boardwalk for about 10-15 minutes and then ride back to the shopping center. The route is approximately 32 miles, which is usually done at a speed of 18-21 mph. The group also participates in local charity rides in the area, which support various causes. There are few places that the women from the Broward Women’s Sports Program Recreational Soccer League would rather be on a Sunday morning than playing soccer. The women are passionate about their league. For many, it is the only hour in their week when they take time for themselves. They join the league to get in shape and make new friends, as well as to acquire and/or refine their soccer skills.
Gayle Smitter and Patsy Gibbs co-founded the league 1995. It is open to all recreational-level players age 30 and over and includes players as old as 70. Some played soccer competitively in high school or college, while others are beginners. They are teachers, businesswomen, lawyers and housewives and more, all from a variety of countries, such as the United States, Columbia, Mexico and many others.
“Some of these women are single moms, work two jobs, have special needs children, work or take care of their families,” said Kelly-Anne Cozzati, league commissioner. “The league gives them a chance to spend time with other women and get exercise, while playing a sport they love. It is their ‘me’ time.”
There are currently six teams full of “soccer moms” with 15 players on each. Games are played on Sunday afternoons at Chapel Trail Park, located at 19531 Taft St. The league plays from September to December and from January to April, with the annual family picnic in May. There are no games during the summer months. Players join the league as individuals and are assigned to a team. They are rated and each team is balanced to include a range of experience levels. Players are re-assigned to different teams each season, so that they can meet more people and make new friends. Their teammate one season might be their opponent during the next one.
Some of the more traditional soccer rules have been altered to make the league more beginner-friendly. For example, there is no “off sides” rule, no restrictions on throw-ins, and the on-the-fly substitution rule applies so that players can enter and exit the game more easily. In addition, a goalie “safety area” in front of the net protects the goalies by prohibiting the attacking team from touching the ball while in the safety area. The games are family friendly, offering husbands and children a chance to cheer for their favorite players.
The season ends with a Soccer Bowl, which includes all teams in the league. It follows a single elimination format, with a slight twist. The teams in last place are given the advantage, so the best teams are usually eliminated in the beginning. Losing a game in the Soccer Bowl is not such a bad thing, since each eliminated team gets pizza.
Every year, the league forms a Goodwill traveling team with a double mission of creating goodwill and promoting women’s soccer throughout the world. Team members work at the BB&T Center concession stand during Florida Panther hockey games to raise money and build camaraderie before the trip. The team has already been to places like Venezuela, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Argentina, Scotland, France, Sweden, Peru and Spain and more. They have brought shirts, soccer balls, cleats and shin guards to some of the poorer countries.

The statistics are startling – nearly 10,000 people are killed by drunk drivers and another 350,000 are injured in alcohol-related crashes every year. Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking. It offers programs for students, parents, victims and more.
Heather Geronemus understands the effects of drunk driving first hand, as well as how MADD can help. In 2009, her father, Robert Greronemus, was hit and killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street in South Florida. “Nancy, a victim’s advocate for MADD, reached out to me and took care of me when nobody else could,” said Geronemus. “Here was a total stranger who walked into my life to help me and support me through an impossibly difficult time. I wanted more than anything to give back to MADD, but more importantly, I wanted to be part of a world where nobody would need that call from a stranger ever again.”
In 2010, Geronemus was offered the opportunity to chair Walk Like MADD and raise community awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. This will be her 6th year chairing the Ft. Lauderdale event, which has become the largest and fastest growing MADD 5K in the country. In 2015, approximately 2,000 people attended. They raised $187,000 to provide victim services to those affected by this violent crime, as well as prevention programs for underage drinking throughout Broward County. The 2016 walk will be held on April 24th at 7:30am at Huizenga Plaza.
“Every one of us has the power to stop drunk driving,” said Geronemus. “It’s as simple as deciding to make a choice to always include a safe ride home when your plans include drinking and to have the hard discussions with your children, colleagues, and friends. Every year I have the privilege to see the parents, kids, teachers, businesses, government leaders and law enforcement professionals line up at the start line for Walk Like MADD. Each and every person at that starting line makes a choice to be there – a choice to support and protect their community. And in that moment, it is a choice to save a life. I can’t think of anything more important.”
One of the ways that MADD educates teens on the dangers of underage drinking is through the Power of Youth program offered at public/private schools, as well as churches, synagogues, and community events. Students are often shocked at the statistics and surprised to hear the stories of other families who have been affected by a drunk-driving incident.
“This program educates young teens about making poor decisions that could impact their lives or someone else’s permanently,” said David Pinsker, Florida State Executive Director. “Everyone in middle school and high school needs to hear this life saving message. Everyone thinks it can’t happen to them, but the fact is it can and it does.”
Through Power of Parents, MADD educates parents on how to start a discussion with their teen about the dangers of underage drinking and making good choices. The program is presented at schools, PTA meetings, churches, synagogues, and community events. Typically, parents want to know how kids get access to alcohol, if they should let them drink at home, and what the kids can say when pressured by their peers.
“This program helps to start dialogue between parent and child on a very difficult subject to discuss,” said Pinsker. “Parents tend to think this is just the way it is these days. The reality is that most people don’t have these discussions with their kids until something has already happened and caused damage to someone’s life.”
MADD also provides supportive services to drunk or drugged driving victims to help them cope with the devastating impact of substance impaired driving crashes. It offers court accompaniment, supportive literature, advocating for victims’ rights, the opportunity to meet other victims and more. Victims can meet a MADD advocate in a courtroom or any other place a victim or family member feels comfortable meeting.
“This is the heart of what MADD does as an organization,” said Pinsker. “No one expects to be in this position in their lives and we are there to help guide them through the difficult pieces. We help them legally, as well as through the healing process.”

In a recent survey, about 30 percent of students in the United States are involved in bullying on a regular basis either as a victim, bully or both. These school bullying statistics show what a problem bullying of all kinds in the United States has become. Out of the 77 percent of those bullied, 14 percent have had a bad or even severe reaction to the abuse, according to recent school bullying statistics. These numbers make up the students that experience poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety about going to school and even suicidal thoughts (bullycide) as a result of being bullied by their peers. As a result of this fear and anxiety of being bullied, many students will make excuses or find ways around going to school.
Here’s how one local student, Rachel Jagendorf from Cooper City, turned things around and went from being a bully victim to a successful entrepreneur.
As a high school student, Rachel was an overweight victim of constant bullying for four years. As you can imagine, this took a huge toll on her, leaving her to feel unsure, hurt and unworthy. Now, looking back on those years, she can honestly say that if it wasn’t for those mean girls she would not be where she is today. Yes, she is saying thank you to her tormentors for giving her the push to fight back, the confidence to overcome and the desire to transform herself into a strong, positive, sensitive adult. Upon graduation, Rachel decided to leave her high school torment behind and make a positive life change. This led to a personal mission starting with food and nutrition research, ultimately realizing that making everything from scratch was the way to go.
Rachel’s quest for eating healthy began with the desire to reach certain goals through a “lifestyle” change, all while staying within food allergy boundaries and avoiding crazy fad diets. Starting with the elimination of artificially processed foods, Rachel felt inspired to begin her new journey. “With a love for eating healthy, food was never the problem; it was always that stubborn sweet tooth!” she said. “After trying protein bars and other so-called clean treats on the market, I found myself disappointed. It was time to make a move.” Determined to satisfy those sweet cravings in a healthy way, Rachel embarked on her quest to create a healthy alternative.
After a year of working very hard in the kitchen, tons of taste
testing, as well as ingredient combination research to find the perfect macronutrient ratio, Rachel perfected Raw by Rae Energy Bites. Not only were they heavenly, they were also healthy, 100% raw, natural, real food that everyone’s body can benefit from.
Creating a recipe and making a delicious product was only the first step in creating a real business. When she completed 10 different flavors last fall she thought it was all ready and set to go. Little did she know it was only the very beginning on a road filled with early mornings, late nights and absolutely no social life! So many details to turn her homemade recipes into a store ready product. Friends and family loved the taste and couldn’t believe her desserts were actually healthy and micronutrient balanced. She laughed it off when she was told she should apply to be on Shark Tank. At this point there was no turning back, Rachel knew this product was a winner.
Since then, Rachel has created a logo and the packaging design, rented a commercial kitchen, hired two employees, sourced the best ingredients at the best prices, promoted her social media channels, networked with some very successful business mentors, started working on her cold-pressed coffee line and most importantly, sales. She is out knocking on doors every single day, introducing her product and trying to get some shelf space in the local stores and restaurants. She spends her evenings emailing potential customers and networking on LinkedIn. “There are never enough hours in the day and I am loving it!” says Rachel. “I am so blessed to have the opportunity to share my knowledge about healthy living and good nutrition while offering the public a product that will improve their lives and put a little happiness their day.”
Although Rachel wishes that no one had to endure the emotional trauma of bullying, she is grateful that she was able to channel her frustrations and turn a negative experience into a progressive career as a successful entrepreneur. Keeping our children safe needs to be a priority in our lives. As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure we provide children with the skills to act smart, think responsibly and problem solve effectively. By teaching them these skills, we provide our children with the necessary tools that
create independent and safe thinkers. These “essentials” are a gift parents can give their children and it is a gift that
will keep giving throughout a lifetime. We cannot be with our children every second through their lives. There comes a
time when they need to leave the protection of “the nest.” We are neurotic the first time we leave them with a babysitter. The first time they go to a friend’s house without us we’re a little hesitant. The first time they ride their bike alone to a friend’s, we stretch our necks around the corner to watch them as they go and ask them to call when they get there. It continues as they grow, get their licenses and start to drive, attend parties and proms and go off to college. It doesn’t end there, as they buy their first homes, travel, have children of their own and the cycle continues. A parent’s work is never done and the worrying never ends.
How do we teach the skills that are necessary to keep our children safe so that we aren’t in a constant state of anxiety? It begins with understanding that just
as parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual; children are limited in the skills they are born with that enable them to protect themselves. We don’t wait for children to burn themselves to learn that the stove is hot. We don’t allow them to be hit by a car before teaching them they must look both ways before crossing the street. We are given the responsibility as parents to teach our children the skills to keep them safe. Taking it for granted that children “just know” means not following through on our responsibility as parents.
There are several ways to teach your children these critical skills. Instead of telling your child “No, because I said so,” give them an explanation as to why something is a “no!” Tell them why you need them to check in when they get to their friend’s house. Tell them why they can’t run across the street to get the ball. Explain to them why they need to go with a “buddy” to use the bathroom when they are at the park. When children have the “why” it makes sense to them and they accept the “no” much easier.
Role playing, giving “what if” scenarios and having your children provide the solution, and reading stories together, are additional ways to teach kids how to keep themselves safe. Whatever method your family chooses, it is imperative to follow through on this responsibility. We aren’t given many chances, if any at all. Accidents happen and so we need to improve the chances of our children staying safe by being proactive. Enable your children, so that even though you cannot be there protecting them every second, you can breath a sigh of relief because you know what you have taught them.

Florida Medical Center’s Imaging Center of West Broward is now open on the second floor of the hospital’s freestanding Emergency Center in Davie. The Imaging Center provides services such as CAT scans, outpatient lab work, ultrasounds and X-rays in a setting designed to provide a more efficient patient experience. “We are excited to be able to offer high quality emergency care and advanced imaging capabilities in one convenient location,” said Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, CEO of Florida Medical Center. “Our new Imaging Center allows patients to quickly access the services and diagnostic testing they need as close to home as possible.”
The center also offers cardiac calcium scores, a test used to detect calcium deposits found in the coronary arteries. This preventive procedure has the potential to predict future heart problems and is performed in about five minutes without the use of injections or intravenous iodine.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates Superintendent Robert W. Runcie for being selected as Florida’s 2016 Superintendent of the Year by the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS). Superintendent Runcie received the honor Wednesday, December 2, 2015, during a joint meeting of FADSS and the Florida School Boards Association in Tampa.
Runcie was appointed BCPS Superintendent in October 2011, and is now entering his fifth year leading the sixth largest public school system in the nation and the second largest in the state of Florida.
During his tenure as BCPS Superintendent, Runcie was instrumental in spearheading community support for an $800 million General Obligation Bond in November 2014, which passed with 74 percent voter approval. This additional revenue source provides BCPS with needed funding for safety and modernization of schools, as well as updated technology, as part of its SMART (Safety, Music & Art, Athletics, Renovation and Technology) initiative.
Additional BCPS education initiatives under Runcie’s leadership include:• Becoming a national model for rethinking school discipline
through its intervention strategy called PROMISE, which is creating positive outcomes for BCPS students and the community.
• Implementing innovative programs and engaging learning opportunities for all students including scholastic chess for all 2nd and 3rd grade students; the largest debate program in the
nation – in all high schools and expanding in middles schools; computer science courses in all high schools; and expanding dual language programs and investing in music and the arts.
• Continuously improving management of BCPS business operations to deliver significant savings for reinvestment in BCPS students, teachers and schools.“Bob Runcie is an outstanding superintendent with a single
focus and commitment to student success,” states FADSS President and Orange County Superintendent Barbara Jenkins. “His instructional and operational expertise provide purposeful direction to one of the nation’s largest urban school districts. The process for electing Florida’s Superintendent of the Year was established by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), a national organization of school superintendents and other educational leaders. In February 2016, Runcie will represent all Florida superintendents at the AASA’s National Education Conference in Phoenix, Arizona where he will be recognized and honored for his public education service in Florida.

R iaz T jon -A - Joe launched off his starting
block to compete in the 50 meter Freestyle for the Class 1A state championship, while his Westlake Preparatory School team and supporters held their breath, hoping he would bring home the first championship in the school’s 22-year history. Westlake Preparatory was not only an underdog as a first year swim program, but they went completely under the radar until States. Once senior Tjon-A-Joe beat the state record in the Breast Stroke preliminaries (54.64 seconds), heads started turning and Westlake Prep, along with Tjon-A-Joe, were on the map. Westlake Administrator Dr.Rolin, who was poolside at the 50 meter Free State Finals said, “Riaz was swimming so fast and was so focused, I never saw him take a breath!” That’s because, just like his onlookers, he didn’t. He swam those 50 meters and won the State Championship with his head down the whole way. Fearless and driven, Tjon-A-Joe will do whatever it takes to beat his own times...it just so happens that this time, his time (20.26 seconds) won the title! Oh, let us not forget, he also won a silver medal in 100-meter Breast Stroke and was the only athlete to compete in two state finals in the same day.
Was it a fluke? Anyone who knows Tjon-A-Joe knows that nothing about him
is a fluke. He is fiercely driven and has a work ethic beyond reproach. When asking about Tjon-A-Joe’s motivation, there is a story that would crumble most teens but instead, he found his strength. He grew up in the Republic of Suriname, the smallest country in South America located just north of Brazil. His parents worked very hard and overcame adversity through hard work, determination and making the most of opportunities.
At age 11, Tjon-A-Joe was placed on a swimming team and found success quickly. He knew, by example, that in order to succeed he must do more than what was asked of him. With a few wins under his belt, he went to train with his uncle a little further away from where he lived. His Uncle was an Olympic swimmer and became what Tjon-A-Joe touts as, “my toughest and greatest coach.” By 12 years old, Tjon-A-Joe was swimming every day in the early mornings and afternoons while competing in meets on weekends. “I had no time for a social life outside of swimming due to the extensive training regimen and commitment required,” he said.
As Tjon-A-Joe was excell ing in swimming in his country, his father was also excelling, rapidly climbing the corporate ladder. He became a very influential and successful commodity trader at a bank and then, eventually, a Chief Executive Officer. As successful as he was in Suriname, he knew that
there were opportunities that he could not provide for his son. At age 15, Tjon-A-Joe was sent to the United States on a foreign exchange program in hopes that this would prepare him for college and bigger opportunity in America. He landed in Atlanta, alone, and tried to assimilate into swimming and school in Georgia. As one could imagine, it wasn’t easy, and within a year Tjon-A-Joe’s mom had found a better situation for him in South Florida.
Tjon-A-Joe moved to Davie for his junior year. He now lives with a host family, after school he trains with Azura Aquatics at the David Posnack JCC and attends Westlake Preparatory School in Cooper City. Does he think this has been a tough road? “Maybe, but it has all made me who I am now,” replied Tjon-A-Joe. And who is that you may wonder? Riaz Tjon-A-Joe is a smart, well-spoken young man who finds strength from within, overcomes adversity, and has laser focus, patience and perseverance. He is someone who has set his sights on the Olympics.
Tjon-A-Joe’s intensity comes across in his interview, his schoolwork, his hobbies (stocks & business website development), as well as his swimming. He researches everything to make himself perform at his body’s highest capacity and in all other aspects of his life. “Wisdom is power. A coach will take you just so far and then it’s up to you,” he said. “I research techniques, physics, physiological dynamics, nutrition, stretching and more to better my times,”

he added emphatically, as that is his only objective. By the way, in his research, he learned that if you hold your breath in a 50-meter swim, your body will build up an overabundance of lactic acid. He also put his research into stocks, which resulted in Tjon-A-Joe earning 1st place in the state for a stock competition he entered.
Westlake Preparatory School is now on the map in swimming, led by Tjon-A-Joe. They brought home a State Championship gold medal, a silver medal, fi nished the season 10th in the boy’s team standings, and broke a state record. Is the Westlake Prep pool deep for seasons to come? Junior Adon Diaz

Tjon-A-Joe is ready to pass the torch to his up and coming teammates; he is preparing and researching his next step. “The phone has been ringing. Many colleges are fi ghting for Riaz,” said Rolin. “Our job now at Westlake is to help him narrow the choices to fi nd the best opportunity. We work a 20-10-5 rule in helping our students select colleges, with any of the fi nal 5 being the ideal fi t,” he added. Tjon-A-Joe would like to fi nd a way, through education,
business, volunteering or swimming, to give back to the people of Suriname, as well as the United States. “I want to do something for this country for giving me this opportunity that I have,” he said.
Maybe we shouldn’t hold our breath, as Tjon-A-Joe knows the road to the Olympics will take patience and many years of training. But, we should all take note of Riaz Tjon-A-Joe’s unique name, his unique country of origin (Republic of Suriname) and the previously little-known, unique private school, Westlake Preparatory, that put him on the starting block at states. From the smallest opportunities come some of the biggest successes.

Nova High School Athletics are back on the grid again. This past 2015 fall season has brought a great deal of excitement and wins for the Nova football, cross country, golf, volleyball and swim teams.
Beginning the school year with a fresh slate in a new district and with a mixed sense of emotions, the Nova Titan Football team was set straight by new Head Coach Kevin Huntley. Previously playing for the University of Wisconsin Badgers and in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, Huntley brought his courage, dedication and focus to the team. “Coaching the Titans this year posed a number of challenges, but the kids found a way to have trust in me and my plan to accomplish things that have not been done here in a long time,” said Huntley. “It meant a lot to see the seniors accomplish these things because they have had to endure some of the more trying times in the program. They are a special group of kids and taught the younger players a lot. The future is bright for the program and that brings me a great deal of joy,” he said. Putting the past behind them, the Titans were determined to make a name for themselves this year. Middle linebacker and punter Spencer Weems said, “I didn’t really care about the mixed reputation because that was from last year and we were creating a new one. It was my last year playing and I wanted to be a part of getting a banner hung in our gymnasium.”
Nova went in as the underdog in many games, like the District Championship game against McArthur High School. The Titans prevailed 34-17, winning the District Title for the first time in 50 years! A key player in that game was running back Anthony Sims. “It’s always been one of my goals as a principal to have a winning football team,” said a
happy Principal Dr. John LaCasse as the team headed into regional quarterfinals against Mater Academy. The Titans lost in overtime with a score of 35-34.
Regardless, spirits at the school were high. “Nova Football is back on the map!” exclaimed Dr. LaCasse while addressing the student body during school announcements.
Humble was a word that defined Nova’s remaining fall sports. The Golf team completed the season with a record of 5-6 and had an opportunity to compete in district play. “I am proud of every single person who participated in golf this season because they all showed that a little practice can make a big difference,” said Coach Brian Luebkert.
The Cross Country team had 10 of its members advance to regionals. “We had a great year with a surprising ending for the boys’ team winning second place in Districts as well as our individual runner, Sandy Benito, taking 5th place. It was definitely a season to remember,” said Cross Country Coach Shawn McQuaid.
The Girls’ Volleyball team had an even record of 9 wins and 9 losses this season. Through constant practices and hard work, the team persisted with positive attitudes. “I chose to only keep eleven girls because I feel that the girls can have a stronger connection, which makes them play more efficiently,” said Coach Angela McBee.
Titan Swimming and Diving teams made it to state with members Adriana Cortes-Urbina, Francisco Cantu and Robert Blake Shreves performing to the best of their abilities. “I’m a competitive person and it’s a privilege to demonstrate my competitiveness while representing my school statewide,” said Cantu.
Ready! Set! Go! Students are always working enthusiastically on activities at Fox Trail, both in and out of the classroom. This fall was no exception. The entire school participated in the annual Boosterthon Fun Run. Many fourth and fifth graders also participate in the music program at Fox Trail, and some fourth graders are hard at work on STEM activities.
The Boosterthon Fun Run incorporates character traits with a “mini marathon” while raising funds for the school. Students learn good character, get lots of exercise, and even earn prizes for pledges. The money earned goes to buy items for the school. This year the Boosterthon theme was Big World Recess. Each day, students met with the Boosterthon coaches in a team huddle. They taught the students the importance of good character. On the last day, the entire school participated in the Boosterthon Fun Run. Even the unseasonably warm temperatures could not stop the enthusiasm of the crowd. Each eager runner completed 35 laps around the track. After the Run, exhausted students focused on collecting well-earned pledges!
Many fourth and fifth graders are part of the amazing music program at Fox Trail. Music students enjoy learning about music under the direction of Fox Trail’s music teacher, Mrs. Stewart. This year, Fox Trail Elementary chorus was privileged to perform at Bailey Hall at Broward College. They prepared a diverse collection of holiday songs. The students were excited, and a bit nervous, to perform at an authentic concert hall. Their family and friends eagerly awaited their performance, and they were not disappointed! Performing takes hard work and dedication, but all of Fox Trail’s students think it’s worth it.
STEM is becoming part of a typical day at Fox Trail, and the students in both Mrs. Alberico and Mrs. Stoloff’s fourth grade classes are buzzing with excitement! Both classes meet regularly to complete challenging STEM activities. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Each week, groups of students collaborate to solve “a real world problem.” The students learn to work with time and material constraints to build a prototype, and then attempt to improve their designs. In the spring, the classes hope to present a showcase highlighting their STEM centers.
The first STEM challenge was to build a twelve-inch bridge, which could hold 25 pennies. Materials were limited to ten Popsicle sticks, four straws, two cups, string, and tape. Teams got frustrated, but they collaborated and tried many different designs until they succeeded.
The latest STEM challenge was for students to make a boat in thirty minutes using only 10 straws and a ten inch piece of tape. The boat needed to float and hold 25 pennies. The students were anxious to build the boat, but they learned that careful planning, teamwork, and perseverance would be required. The students now have a new appreciation for engineering!
This year at Fox Trail has been chock-full of thrilling events and hands-on learning. Exciting opportunities are keeping students engaged in learning every day!

As the Art Specialist at Flamingo Elementary School in Davie for the past three years, Mrs. Librach was very honored to be awarded the Broward County Visual Arts Teacher of The Year for 2014. Being recognized for her efforts in making Flamingo’s art program a vibrant, innovative and exciting learning program was one of the most satisfying experiences she has ever had. Mrs. Librach looks forward to coming to “work” every day and sharing her passion for the arts with her students.
In addition to the work she does inside the classroom, Mrs. Librach takes great pride in her “outdoor classroom” as well. She has established a garden, a mini-farm that her students look forward to visiting and learning about. She was awarded several grants over the past few years to get the mini-farm started. These include grants from the Broward Farm Bureau and the Whole Foods Market “Whole Kids Foundation” grants. With the funds they provided, she has added a ten unit hydroponic garden, which allows our students to experience 21st century gardening. The garden is a place where our students can observe, create art, enjoy the beauty of nature, as well as get some quality outdoor time. We are currently growing organic carrots, spinach, gourmet lettuce varieties, artichokes, eggplants, tomatoes, mint, basil, and melons. In addition to the vegetable garden, we are also maintaining a butterfly garden and have been certified through Mrs. Librach’s efforts as a National Wildlife Foundation Habitat.
Working with students in the arts is rewarding in itself. Being able to teach a student how to open up their minds to let the creativity flow is sometimes a challenge, but always worth the effort. Mrs. Librach has been fortunate in receiving multiple donations through
the Donors Choose organization as well. These donations have helped to supply her with wonderful art tools that are above and beyond what our budget could have funded. Through the donations of corporate sponsors, as well as individual anonymous donors, she has received hundreds of dollars worth of art supplies to supplement her program.
Children in her class learn to connect their art studies with other subjects in a fun, interactive setting. The administration of Flamingo Elementary has been incredibly supportive of Mrs. Librach’s efforts to expand her arts program and integrate the core curriculum with the arts. Our school is a close-knit community and everyone takes pride in the goals we have set to educate our students. Mrs. Librach is an integral part of the school family. Her motivation is to teach her students to tap their inner creativity and how to be environmentally aware.
The Student Council at Embassy Creek Elementary is off to a great start this year! The Student Council representatives are compiled of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade elected students from each class. Each year the representatives are very philanthropic and work to raise money for a myriad of charities. One of the major events they raise funds for is Relay for Life. This year’s Relay for Life is held at Cooper City High School on April 2nd and 3rd.
The first fundraiser that the students held was Hats off for Autism on September 18th. The event was held at the school and students brought in $1 to wear a hat that day. We raised over $1,000, which was combined with the event last year and a check was written for over $2,000 and donated to Autism Speaks this September. The students will have another Hats off day in April of this year, in preparation for next year.
In October, the students at Embassy participated in Kicks for Kids, sponsored by the Orange Bowl. The students brought in gently used sneakers and cleats for under privileged kids. We were able to donate 16 large bags to the program. The students also earned a special treat from the company!
In November, Student Council sponsored the Harvest Drive. Each grade level brought in different items and gift cards. All together we donated 36 boxes of food to the Harvest Drive
Food Bank, which assists many less fortunate families during the Thanksgiving Season.In addition to this already packed year of fundraisers, Student Council also sold Spook-o-
Grams and Winter Grams, consisting of candy, bracelets, and necklaces that they can send to their friends or keep for themselves. This year we will also sell Spring Grams in March. All money will be donated to Relay for Life in April.
Student Council has several other activities planned for the year. In January they will sponsor Change for a Cure. Each day of the week students will bring in different coins to be donated to Relay for Life.
Our biggest fundraiser of the year is our Movie Night, which will be held at the end of March. Students and their families can purchase a ticket and bring blankets and chairs to set up and watch a movie in the schools cafeteria. In addition to the movie, there are always yummy treats to purchase or make and other fun activities to participate in. The students at Embassy look forward to this night all year, as it is a fun time and great way to raise money for Relay for Life.
As you can see, Embassy Creek Student Council kids work all year to pay it forward! They learn that giving back is an important, worthwhile life skill.

The bass is so loud you can barely hear the crowd that is singing out the song. It’s a joyous event. People greeting one another with a smile and inviting them to dance. Volunteers are handing out pizza ,and while some eat, others dance. Lights strobe in a rainbow of colors making you want to stay there forever. Believe it or not this is Pioneer’s Sixth Grade “Get-To-Know-You-Dance”. Here, sixth graders had the chance to hang out with old friends and make new ones. Here, the phobias of middle school disappeared in a sea of joy and friendship.
Before the dance occurred posters were put up, messages were announced, and forms were signed. A lot of work was put into the making of this dance and this year more work than ever! Mrs.Schindler, a sixth grade math teacher, said that this year’s dance had the best turnout yet. “It has been years since this many kids came,” she said, “and the best part is that these kids really like each other. They have… personality, they get along very well.”
Sixth-grader, Cooper Proul, said he has already made new friends from other schools and even kept some of his old friends. Another sixth grader who went to the dance, Justeen Thompson, went to Cooper City Elementary and she has also made a new friend. “I met a boy named Chase from Griffin and we’re already really good friends.” Like Cooper, she also kept some of her old friends, including Alexis Nicole Linares, and Eva Suarez. The trio agreed that Middle School was better than elementary school in many
ways. “More classes, more teachers, more bathrooms, phones, and awesome things like this!” They shouted in unison when asked what they liked better about middle school.
The excitement doesn’t end there though. Mr.Consaul, Pioneer’s principal, said he thought the dance should help kids make new friends. “Kids from three separate schools coming together in an informal atmosphere… It should help them get to know each other.” It seems the dance has done its job because many said that Mr.Consaul’s hopes were exactly what happened.
A group of three girls, Kasandra Castro, Emily Cooke, and Marie Harlan each had something they are enjoying about middle school. Both Kasandra and Marie were excited about switching classes, while Emily was overjoyed about Bible club. They all agreed on one thing though; the dance was helping them meet new people and make more friends. Danielle Rothschild and Lindsay Mutzman both went to Embassy Creek Elementary and already, they have made new friends from other schools and are expecting to make more at the dance.
Just walking into the dance and hearing “Sugar” playing while the large crowd of sixth graders sing the tune together… Well, there is nothing happier to see. Now just think, this spectacular dance took place half of the school year ago, the friendships that have been formed since then are unimaginable.

“CHASE AWAY CANCER”A Hairy Fundraiser at Archbishop McCarthy High SchoolOn Tuesday, November 24, 2015, twelve teachers from Archbishop McCarthy High School
had their hair dyed colors ranging from teal to orange. Eight of their teachers had their heads shaved during the 30-minute Student Assembly which included: A Hairy Parade, featuring No Shave November bearded students and the Faculty Hair Color Revealed, all supporting the “Chase Away Cancer” event that took place at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School, 5451 South Flamingo Road.
The culmination of No Shave November cancer fundraising events, “Chase away Cancer” was a challenge to the entire student body. “If the students raised the designated amount set by the teachers, then we would follow through during Thanksgiving week,” said Michell Llovet, Health Teacher and Student Activities Coordinator for Archbishop McCarthy. Llovet was one of the participating teachers who sat down to Thanksgiving with teal hair rather than her lovely blonde locks.
The teacher transformations ended when the last lock was dyed at approximately 1:00 p.m. “We had professionals come in to help us, thankfully!” added Llovet. The teachers revealed their new looks to the student body that afternoon and the fun began again when eight teachers had their heads shaved. to grow facial hair. The Chase Away Cancer event was a show of support of an Archbishop McCarthy student who has cancer. Funds were raised to benefit Childhood Cancer Research for Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Center.
