THOSE PESKY AMALEKITESThe Amalekites were a consistent bane to the Hebrew people. • First launched an unprovoked attack on the Jews in the wilderness after

having left Egypt under Moses- This angered The Lord who, in effect, cursed them

• Repelled the Jews’ first attempt to occupy the Promised Land• Attacked Israel two different times during the period of the Judges• Along with the Midianites and others, they pillaged Israel just before the

rise of Gideon• Saul commanded to utterly destroy them (he didn’t)• David chases them down and retrieves the spoils taken by the

Amalekites after they attacked Ziklag

THE DEATH OF SAUL AND HIS SONSI Samuel 31

Saul’s army beaten by the Philistines.

“The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically”.

• Anticipating his demise and wishing to spare himself abuse, the already injured King fell upon his own sword unto his death.

• A brave band of soldiers retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons • David was not there but he would hear about it later (2 Samuel 1)

WHERE DID ALL THIS LEAVE DAVID?• There was no handoff of the kingdom• There was no proper reconciliation between Saul and

David• Jonathan would not be there to see David crowned• Samuel had long before passed away and would not

witness the fulfillment of his prophecies about David• The Hebrew army had just been defeated by the

Philistines – David would be rebuilding from that point• David would have to contend for the kingdom with the

entitled descendants of Saul

OBSERVATIONS1. The way you choose to engage your life really does affect

others.

2. Saul became totally focused on his fears. This set him up to become consumed by them. There is a lesson there for us.

3. Like Abraham, David believed God’s plans would ultimately shape his destiny. Do you believe God in regards to His plans for you?
