If you want to know where the “place to be seen” isthese days, just walk into the David Posnack JewishCommunity Center. Whether you want to work out, attend cultural arts programs, utilize the preschoolor senior areas — there is something here for you. But, what's really abuzz is happening in the heart ofour center’s development office.

Our new Senior Development Director BeverlyBachrach brings many successful years of experienceto the DPJCC. She, along with Michael Orlove andAmy Rosenberg, fundraising co-chairpersons of the2015 JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest®, has raised almost $2 million of a$3 million goal.

During the Games and ArtsFest® from August 9-14, teenagers, ages 12-17,from Israel, Canada, Great Britain, Panama, Poland and throughout theUnited States, will come together to either compete in sporting events orattend arts-related activities. Mark your calendars for Opening Ceremonieson Sunday, August 9 at the BB&T Center, when we welcome 1,500 teens,300 being local, their coaches and delegation leaders.

In addition to sponsorships, an event like this requires manpower. We areactively recruiting 1,000 volunteers for a variety of positions— fromadministrative to hospitality, to serving meals, to working at the venues. Thelist is vast. Whether you have one hour, one day or the week, we ask thatyou register on our website at www.fortlauderdalejccmaccabi.com.

To help us reach our $3 million goal, please call 954-434-0499, ext. 321.

As we continue preparing for the 2015 JCCMaccabi Games® and ArtsFest®, when 1,500 teenathletes and artists from around the world will visitBroward County, we are seeing a tremendousoutpouring of donations in the form of both timeand money to help make this event a success.

One of my friends wanted to be a host family, butthen realized that the date was the first week thatshe, a teacher, must be back at school to work. Shestarted to back out of hosting, but then read a bookcalled My Mother’s Secret: A Novel Based on a True Holocaust Story.

After discussing the story with her book club, she realized that manynon-Jewish families risked their lives to shelter the Jews. The least shecould do was find the time to house a couple of kids for a week. Sheimmediately signed up as a host family.

Many individuals and corporations are stepping up to the plate withmuch needed dollars and donations of products and services—all verynecessary to host an event of this magnitude. The funds that we receivewill go not only toward supporting the games, but also toward ensuringthe future of our JCC.

Moreover, the funds will help support the JCC’s special needs programwhich provides camp scholarships to families with children and youngadults who have autism, learning disabilities, developmental delays, emotional and physical handicaps.

There is no better time than now to “make a life.” Your gift of time and/or dollars in support of the Games, ArtsFest ® or the JCC will provide life-changing experiences and services to so many in our community.

Coaches & delegation heads volunteer their time

Memorable Moments from2014 JCC Maccabi Games®In 2014 the David Posnack JCC sent its largest delegation since webegan participating in 1991 to Boca Raton and Cherry Hill, NJ tocompete in a multitude of sports and competitive dance. The teens will never forget that experience and neither will the adults whovolunteered their time and effort to mentor, coach, chaperone andcheer on our young athletes.

We must harness the unique energy and passion ofour youth and make sure they know not only are they

part of the history, but of the future as well. THe LeGACy OF THe JCC MACCABI GAMeS® & ARTSFeST®

Beverly S. BachrachJoins Staff as Senior DevelopmentDirector

Beverly S. Bachrach has joined the DavidPosnack JCC staff as seniordevelopment director. Beverly willcoordinate the JCC’s major fundraisingefforts with individuals, corporationsand organizations and build acomprehensive database.

“I am delighted to be a part of the J,especially for the exciting times ahead,”Beverly said. “Raising the dollars neededto host the 2015 JCC Maccabi Games® &ArtsFest® is one of my highest priorities.”

Prior to coming to the JCC, Beverly wasvice president for universityadvancement and marketing andcommunications at St. ThomasUniversity in Miami Gardens. Whilethere she led the first capital campaignthat raised $53 million. Before that shewas the southeast regional director forAmerican Friends of The HebrewUniversity in Boca Raton and led thecampaign that raised $10 million withinthree years.

In 1986 she was hired to plan, develop, implement and lead a capital campaignto raise funds to build the first majorperforming arts center in BrowardCounty, which would later become theBroward Center for the Performing Arts. That campaign raised over $25 millionfrom the private sector to receive publicmatching funds. At the time that wasthe largest single fundraising programin Broward County.

“We are thrilled to have an individual ofthis caliber at the JCC. Beverly hassuccessfully led some of the largestcapital campaigns in South Florida andhas closed several million dollar plusgifts,” said Scott ehrlich, Posnack JCCchief executive officer. “We are lookingforward to her building strongfundraising teams between our staff, volunteers and the community.”

In various issues of Chai-Ways, we will feature an article by a guest contributor with information about legacy gifts and charitable giving. The following was written by Barry Shacter, C.P.A.

The Tax Advantages of DonatingAppreciated Stock to the JCC

Did you know that one of the best ways to make a donation to a public charityis to donate publicly traded appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds (whichyou have owned for more than one year)? The difference in giving theseappreciated assets to a charity versus giving a check to a charity may save youthousands of dollars in taxes. By taking advantage of this, you may alsosignificantly increase the amount you give to the charity.

Let me give you an example:Let’s say you have a stock worth $30,000 that you want to sell and give theproceeds to the JCC. This example assumes you have a cost basis “purchaseprice” of $6,000 and you have owned the stock for more than one year. What

would the difference be in gifting this stock to the JCC versus selling this stock and then giving the netcash proceeds? (In the example let’s assume you are at a tax bracket of 40% for ordinary income and20% for capital gains.)

Since the securities are donated to the charity and not sold, capital gains taxes from selling the stock willnot apply. The difference to you as the donor would be a tax savings of $6,720 ($12,000 - $5,280) bydonating this stock to the JCC (vs. selling the stock and giving the net cash proceeds). In addition, the JCCgets an extra $4,800 (the J gets the full $30,000 vs. the net cash of $25,200) and since the JCC is a 501(C)(3)charity, the JCC doesn’t pay capital gains taxes when it sells the stock.

There are other advantages to donating the stock vs. selling the stock. By not picking up the gain on thesale of the stock, you are able to keep your taxable income (and your Adjusted Gross Income) lower, therebypossibly reducing the new 2013 Net Investment Income Tax (of 3.8%) and also keeping the possible phaseout of your itemized deductions lower. you should consult with your tax advisor on how this could affectyour personal income tax situation.

This would be a great way to donate to the 2015 JCC Maccabi Games® & ArtsFest® or to one of your otherfavorite JCC funds or activities. Most investment and brokerage firms do this all of the time. We would beglad to discuss this with you and your financial consultant.
