Why have you decided to make a planned gift to Lawrence Academy? The idea of a planned gift came to me when I was considering whether to join a planned gift committee. I realized that if I was willing to work on a committee, then I should be willing to put my money where my mouth is. In my case, my retirement had freed up a 401(k), so it was easy to change the beneficiary to Lawrence Academy. A spur-of-the-moment feeling told me that it was the right thing to be doing with the money, but at the same time I understood that there were tax advantages to doing so. Why did you choose this kind of planned gift? While I am too young yet to do what I really want to do in total for Lawrence, I certainly could at least get the ball rolling by naming the school as the beneficiary of a 401(k). No one really knows in today’s world what we do and do not have, but Robin and I agreed that this amount of money should go to the school. How does your planned gift make you feel? Frankly, it’s not the most satisfying gift because all I am doing is saying, “Change the beneficiary, with my spouse’s consent.” Any kind of planned giving misses that immediate satisfaction —at least for me. It’s not as much fun as writing a check to the school or, as I have done in the past, giving stock. The reason I enjoy giving to the annual fund is that it feels good to know that my contribution makes an immediate impact—like writing a check to the endowment. Yes, I earned the IRA money and it is mine, but it feels more like Monopoly money. That said, this gift to the endowment counts as much as any gift I could make to the school that provided me with the two best years in all my education. I made friends at Lawrence I still have; I grew up and matured at Lawrence—it was just a wonderful experience for me. I have become “re-involved” because now that my family is raised and my businesses are sold, I have the time and freedom to follow things that are more passions than obligations. Making a provision for Lawrence Academy in your will ensures that you honor the work done by the teachers who influenced you in unforgettable ways—and it helps to ensure that students at LA continue to benefit from such teachers. Why have you decided to make a planned gift toLawrence Academy?

The idea of a planned gift came to me when I was consideringwhether to join a planned gift committee. I realized that if Iwas willing to work on a committee, then I should be willingto put my money where my mouth is. In my case, my retirement had freed up a 401(k), so it was easy to change the beneficiary to Lawrence Academy. A spur-of-the-momentfeeling told me that it was the right thing to be doing with themoney, but at the same time I understood that there were taxadvantages to doing so.

Why did you choose this kind of planned gift?

While I am too young yet to do what I really want to do intotal for Lawrence, I certainly could at least get the ball rollingby naming the school as the beneficiary of a 401(k). No onereally knows in today’s world what we do and do not have, but Robin and I agreed that this amount of money should goto the school.

How does your planned gift make you feel?

Frankly, it’s not the most satisfying gift because all I am doingis saying, “Change the beneficiary, with my spouse’s consent.”Any kind of planned giving misses that immediate satisfaction—at least for me. It’s not as much fun as writing a check tothe school or, as I have done in the past, giving stock. The reason I enjoy giving to the annual fund is that it feels good toknow that my contribution makes an immediate impact—likewriting a check to the endowment. Yes, I earned the IRAmoney and it is mine, but it feels more like Monopoly money.

That said, this gift to the endowment counts as much as anygift I could make to the school that provided me with the twobest years in all my education. I made friends at Lawrence Istill have; I grew up and matured at Lawrence—it was just awonderful experience for me. I have become “re-involved”because now that my family is raised and my businesses aresold, I have the time and freedom to follow things that aremore passions than obligations.

Making a provision for Lawrence Academy in your will ensures that you honor the work done by the teachers who influenced you in unforgettable ways—and it helps to ensure that students at LA continue to benefit from such teachers.

Report from the Alumni and Development Office 2008-2009

ANNUAL REPORT/ FALL 2009

56

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends:

With heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of so many, I am pleased to report thatLawrence Academy experienced another banner year in fundraising and friendraising. The enthusiasm of our donor and volunteer bases was awe-inspiring throughout the year.Participation rates finished high, and the school attained its extremely ambitious AnnualFund goal.

The 2008–2009 Annual Fund started off strong, with substantial leadership gifts early inthe school year and a strong Reunion Giving program, which was instituted to replace themany trees that were lost in the December ice storm. As a result, the fund maintainedmonthly benchmarks that were consistently ahead of last year’s totals by approximately20%, keeping our goal of $1.1 million well within reach. Ultimately, we finished the yearwith a total $1,113,000 raised—a new record for annual giving at Lawrence Academy anda new record for Reunion Giving, which came in at $124,000.

The Annual Fund has been growing annuallyover the last seven years at a pace of 10%,and we are so pleased by the spirit andenthusiasm of all who support it. Thesefunds go directly into the operating budgetand provide tremendous relief. With a budget of around $17 million, we are proudthat over a million dollars comes from annualgiving. I thank all of the alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends whose generosityand commitment have helped to take theschool to new heights.

Parent participation rates were impressive this year. Our sincere thanks to Parents’ Fundchairs Jo-Ann and Monty Lovejoy, and their dedicated committee. Overall, 69% of ourparent population contributed to the Annual Fund, with the parents of the Class of 2009setting the pace at 100% participation in the Senior Parent Capital Gift. That drive raised$233,000, which helped to provide some wonderful gifts to the school, including$100,000 for much-needed improvements to the Student Lounge in the Schoolhouse. On behalf of Lawrence Academy, I thank our Senior Parent Capital Gift Committee, co-chaired by Mike and Lamia Taylor and Chris and Nancy Stone, and all of the parentsand grandparents who participated in this exciting effort for their generous commitmentand support.

As reported on page 34, another exciting development this year is the reengineering ofMurbach Field. Spearheaded by head football coach and LA parent Mike Taylor and hiswife, Lamia, the extensive improvements began in late May and were completed by the endof July. Our most sincere thanks again to the Taylors for their generosity.

A final highlight to the year was the development of our new Web site, which launched inAugust. The main source of information about Lawrence Academy, it is very user friendly, interactive, exciting, and functional. Please be sure to visit us often at www.lacademy.edu.

On behalf of everyone at LA, I send out a heartfelt thank-you to all those who support theAcademy and make it the extraordinary institution that it is. As my wife, Laura, and I arenow the parents of three LA graduates, and we begin our 27th year at Lawrence, we continue to be totally inspired by what a phenomenal school this 217-year-old institutionhas become and by all the people whose generosity makes it so.

With warm regards,

Robinson C. MooreAssistant Head of School, External Affairs

Alumni represent the largest donor group uponwhich LA relies, contributing 38% of Annual Funddollars in 2008–2009. Attempting to reach each alumnus and alumna personally to keep them connected and informed about LA is a huge effortundertaken by trustees, Alumni Council members, class agents, and phonathon volunteers to whomwe are grateful.

Parents’ Association Scholarship

Auction –Derby NightOn May 2, 2009, the Parents‘ Association raised over$110,000, in net proceeds, for student scholarships atLawrence Academy. This year‘s scholarship auctiongenerated incredible interest, as 250 parents andfriends of LA came out on a gorgeous spring eveningto enjoy the festivities, which included a silent and liveauction, as well as theme-based menu and beverageofferings. There were beautiful derby hats, radiantsmiles, an ice sculpture of a race horse, dazzling decorations, and hundreds of auction items to add tothe festivities. The incredibly hard-working committeesolicited over 250 items for the auction, prepared artwork for publicity, coordinated mailings, chosemenu and beverage items, created beautiful decorations to transform the Williams Arts Center, and acted as hosts of the evening. Many thanks toALL who contributed to the success of this event!
