Audley Dean Nicols was a native of Pittsburgh, PA but his love of the desert landscape even-tually drew him to settle later in El Paso, TX. Nicols studied at the Art Students League ofNew York and at the school of the Metropolitan Museum of Art under Edwin Howland Blash-field, Kenyon Cox and Henry Siddons Mowbray. He first traveled to the El Paso desert aftersuffering health problems. From there he painted the deserts of Texas, New Mexico and Ari-zona. After these visits, he returned to El Paso as a permanent resident.
The following writing is from a piece written by the Guyens Printing Company of El Paso, TX:
“From his El Paso base, Nicols launched a prolific production of desert landscapes whichbrought him world fame and fortune, which he never really sought.
He came particularly well-known for the exact portrayal of the strong clear light peculiar to thedesert southwest. Experts insist that no other artist has even approached him in this category. At the height of his career when his work was in great demand, he made a practice of working onthree paintings at once in a given locale in order to catch the exact lighting he wanted for each.He claimed that the illumination he wanted for each of his paintings existed for perhaps no morethan 15 minutes during the day. Therefore, he would work on an early morning scene, a mid-dayscene and evening scene simultaneously.
And he captured the myriad and detailed colors of the desert as no other artist has been able to,probably because his love made them more visible. Nicols once wrote: ‘The so-called gray of thedesert is a mistake. The desert is everything but gray. There are clean fresh blues in the skies, pinks and yellows in the sunset, opalescent purple, rose and lavender in the distant mountains, dull greens of every shade in the vegetation, and reds and yellows in the rocks and earth… butnever gray. And there is no flower more vivid in color than the gaudy, waxen blossom of the cactus… pale lemon, pink, bright yellow, violent magentas.’”
This painting is an excellent example of Nicols great attention to the atmosphere, light andcolor of the natural earth, flora and the bright blue desert sky.

Bastrop, TX native Porfirio Salinas is one of Texas’ most prolific and renowned early Texas impressionist painters. He lived in San Antonio and painted the surrounding Texas hill countrythroughout his lifetime.
This particular painting is an excellent example of his early work, painted circa 1940. In thebook The Life of Porfirio Salinas, written by: Mrs. Porfirio Salinas she states: “Porfirio wasconsidered unconventional because he painted landscapes in their natural form and color, justas he saw and felt them.” Salinas does just that in this painting. The bluebonnets are paintedin different blue and violet tones due to the dappled sunlight breaking through the trees andundulating hill shadows. There are also varying shades of green in the tree leaves from thenatural light shining through. This painting shows Salinas’ early hand through the delicatebrushwork.
Salinas was an acclaimed artist in his lifetime and many collectors including: CongressmanSam Rayburn, J. Frank Dobie, President Lyndon Johnson and Governor John Connally ownedhis landscape paintings.

Brownlow started creating art at the age of fivein Fort Worth, TX. He studied art under Mar-garet Littlejohn and Patti East. He experi-mented with knives and wire as painting toolswhich lead to his thick textured and exactinglines. Henry B. Caldwell, former directorof the Fort Worth Art Center commented:“Brownlow’s painting has vigor and a pre-cious of touch that separates it sharply fromthe contemporary happenchance school. Hiswork has strength with an underlying appealfor order; his concern with space and colorholds fascination to both the traditional aswell as abstract painting.”
Jerry Bywaters, the director of the Dallas Mu-seum of Art, had the following to say aboutBrownlow’s work: “Colors, however subtle, play a greater part; the cool and calculateddesigns of the past give way to greater free-dom in the act of execution and a direct formof expressionism is in command….”
Brownlow’s work has been collected by: BobHope, Winthrop Rockefeller, Edward Marcus,Charles Tandy, Angus Wynn and Ralph Bellamy. His paintings can be found in thefollowing permanent collections: SmithsonianInstitute, Dallas Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Beaumont Art Museum and The Worchester Museum,Massachusetts.

This painting depicts the landscape Lea most notably painted: “In westernmost Texas the RioGrand cuts its way between Mount Franklin and the Juarez mountains, becomes an internationalboundary, and starts its way to the sea. This is a land of harsh, wild beauty, of arching skies, abrasive winds, sand and searing sun, of cottonweeds, cactus and mesquite. Here the grittyplains and stony peaks of Texas and New Mexico meet the wide deserts and high sierras ofChihuahua.” – William Weber Johnson

Schumann was born near Leipzig, Saxony, in the German Empire and immigrated with his family to theUnited States about 1879. After a brief stay in Indianola, which had been rebuilt on a smaller scale afterits destruction in an 1875 hurricane, the family settled in Galveston in 1881. There he received instruc-tion from Julius Stockfleth. According to a contemporary newspaper article, Schumann spent time inNew York and the East studying and painting, a report corroborated by numerous surviving sketches ofNew York scenes. His Galveston studio was destroyed in the 1900 hurricane. On the same site, Schumannrebuilt a studio in which he afterward taught privately and became a very productive painter, sometimesexecuting three paintings in one day amid his collection of ship models and statuary. He also worked inthe open air, once sketching a storm-driven sea until forced to retire by flying spray. Schumann is bestknown for marine and harbor scenes done in Galveston. He also produced a number of plein-air worksin Louisiana, the Texas Hill Country, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and the East Coast on occasionalexcursions. He worked in crayon, pencil, and pen and ink as well as oils. In his oils he made extensiveuse of the palette knife with singular effect. Schumann died in Galveston.
Had [Schumann] been an artist along the East Coast instead of the Gulf of Mexico, he would have beenknown all over the world. He is doing for the Gulf Coast what Winslow Homer did for Maine. [Young]

“Harvey Johnson came to Houston from Port Arthur to study art at Texas Southern University under world-renownedartist, sculptor and teacher John Biggers who founded the schools’ program in 1949… Johnson recalled, “As soon asJohn and I met each other – our eyes met – immediately we started reading each other’s mind.” – Debbie A. Harwell. This is an excerpt from the article written by Debbie A. Harwell in her article titled: Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder:Third World Art Treasure but a Memory, published April 18, 2011 in the Houston History Magazine.
Johnson is known for his narrative paintings, depicting the human condition. He is a poet and his paintings revealemotions and the strength of the human spirit. This painting depicts African American women which “function assolid and graceful allegories of creativity, life, hope and the survival of a community and culture.”

Teel was born in Clarksville and reared in El Paso, where his family moved in 1899. He started his businesscareer as an engineer in Mexico and was afterward superintendent of the mechanical department for a De-troit manufacturer. During this time, he received training in commercial art. After his return to El Paso, heentered the automobile business and in 1927 began to paint full time. He painted in and around El Paso,Santa Fe, Arizona and the Trans-Pecos region of Texas including the Big Bend area. He was a resident ofSan Antonio in 1934 and returned to El Paso in 1937. William Hogg, a wealthy Houston oilman, once pur-chased Teel’s entire collection of seventeen paintings, Teel specialized in desert landscapes and pastel por-traits. A columnist for the El Paso Times called him a “master in his presentation of far distances, especiallynoticeable in the scene of lovely quietude, far away blue shadows on the mountain, and a soft light in theforeground.” Teel died in a Long Beach, California, hospital following a short illness. Survivors include hisson Lewis Woods Teel, Jr.
