David Belcher began playing the guitar at age seventeen, classical at age twenty. He did his formal studies in classical guitar with Norman Ruiz in Chicago, performing the first ever student guitar recitals at his undergraduate university. For three years straight he was selected to perform in the annual Commencement Concert of the same institution, where student soloists perform with the university orchestra—playing the second movement from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s first guitar concerto in D, Antonio Vivaldi’s mandolin concerto in G, and the second movement with cadenza from Heitor Villa-Lobos’s guitar concerto, respectively. David has participated in masterclasses with world-renowned guitarists such as Antonio López-Palacios, Costas Cotsiolis, Leo Brouwer, and Manuel Barrueco. At the 2002 Córdoba guitar festival in Córdoba, Spain, he was selected to perform Leo Brouwer’s “Tres Apuntes” in the student concert. When David does not have a guitar in his hands, he enjoys birding, photography, and philosophy and theology—and he will be moving with his family to Manhattan, New York City, in the fall to continue doctoral-level theological studies.
