Welcome to the third lecture as part of the 2020-2021 New Albany Lecture Series Season. Tonight’s program is presented through theNew Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate and features two well-known American political figures in David Alexrod andChris Christie.
I’d like to acknowledge the Derrow family, whose vision and original investment helped launch the center. We’re also grateful to the other sponsors of tonight’s program, who are listed in the program. In addition to presenting programs as part of the lecture series, the New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate worked with New Albany Schools to establish debate teams in the high school and middle school. And earlier today, thousands of high school students from across the region had the unique opportunity to interact with Axelrod and Christie.
As you know, the political discourse in our country has become increasingly vitriolic and divisive. At the same time, many believe that debating has become somewhat of a lost art. The Foundation and Derrow family endeavored to help rebuild the passion and skills to discuss and debate the issues of the day in a thoughtful way without attacking those with whom we disagree. And in doing so, we want to present different perspectives and views to the community and allow everyone to arrive at their own conclusions.
I want to thank Colleen Marshall for moderating tonight’s discussion. Colleen is an Emmy Award–winning journalist with NBC4. She anchors the 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. news and is the host of the weekly political program, “NBC4’s The Spectrum.” Earlier this Fall, NBC4 served as the Foundation’s media sponsor for our “Conversations on Social Justice” and we’re appreciative to General Manager Ken Freedman and his entire team, as a valued partner.
I hope you enjoy tonight’s program. Thank you for participating!
Sincerely,
Craig Mohre, PresidentThe New Albany Community Foundation

CHRIS CHRISTIE was inaugurated as the 55th Governor of the State of New Jersey on January 19, 2010. He was re-elected with 60% of the vote in November of 2013 and served two terms as Governor. He left office in January of 2018. During his time in office, Governor Christie emphasized
the issues of fiscal responsibility, pension and health benefit reform, education reform and the opioid crisis gripping his state and the nation. His March 2017 law restricting opioid prescriptions led to a 26% reduction in those prescriptions in its first year. He also devised the state’s groundbreaking response to Superstorm Sandy, leading the rebuilding of the state’s housing, infrastructure and public schools and setting a bi-partisan example for storm recovery.
Governor Christie was a leader among his colleagues as Governor. He was elected Chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2014, leading the organization to a record fundraising effort and the election of 31 Republican Governors. This was after he served as Vice-Chairman of the RGA in
2012. He also was elected to the Executive Committee of the National Governors Association and served from 2010-2013.
On March 29, 2017, President Donald J. Trump appointed Governor Christie as Chairman of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. Governor Christie led the Commission on a seven-month investigation of this issue, holding hearings around the country. The Commission issued an interim report on July 31, 2017 and a final report on November 1, 2017. The reports contained more than 65 substantive recommendations, all of which were adopted by President Trump.
CHRIS CHRISTIE 55th Governor of the State of New Jersey
Prior to his service as Governor, he served as the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey from January 2002 to December 2008. He was nominated by President George W. Bush on December 7, 2001 and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on December 20, 2001. As the chief federal law enforcement officer in New Jersey for seven years, he led the fight on terrorism in the post-9/11 period, increased resources to fight gang violence, gun crimes and political corruption. His office brought 130 cases prosecuting political corruption at all levels of New Jersey government and never lost a case. He served as one of seventeen U.S. Attorneys on the Attorney Generals Advisory Council in Washington, DC.
He was in the private practice of law from 1987-2001 specializing in corporate law, securities matters and appellate advocacy. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.A. in Political Science in 1984. He was awarded a Juris Doctor degree by Seton Hall University School of Law in 1987. He is admitted to the Bar of the State of New Jersey, theU.S. District Court of New Jersey and the United States Supreme Court. He is now a Senior Legal and Political Commentator for ABC News and the Managing Member of the Christie Law Firm and Christie 55 Solutions, LLC in Morristown, NJ.

The Conway Charitable Lead Annuity Trust is proud to support The New Albany Lecture Series as a season sponsor for the fifth consecutive year.
The Conway family and the Conway Center for Family Business they helped establish is dedicated to the success of family owned businesses, which includes providing enriching educational opportunities.
The mission of the lecture series is to promote lifelong learning and to provide a platform for civil discourse and community dialogue on timely issues. As such, the trust and lecture series are aligned in promoting learning opportunities made available to everyone in the community, including area students. This past year the series reached a milestone, with more than 15,000 students representing central Ohio schools participating in The New Albany Lecture Series student lecture program.
“We absolutely love this impactful program,” said Steve Conway. “The caliber of speakers, the virtual format that makes the lectures accessible, and the opportunity for central Ohioans to interact with the influential thought leaders all make this one of the best lecture series in America.”
Conway noted that they appreciate that the lecture series provides access to currently serving military and military veterans, senior citizens and disadvantaged youth. And the virtual programs this season allow even more people to participate. He added that the series addresses issues of importance to the central Ohio community, such as the mental health and well-being of students, civil discourse and national security.
“Now more than ever, we need access to sound information and we need to hear different perspectives so everyone can arrive at their own conclusions,” said Bea Wolper, Trustee for the Conway Charitable Lead Annuity Trust.”
“The Conways live in New Albany, so they appreciate the quality of the lectures, schools and overall community,” said Wolper. “We look forward to another season of outstanding lectures!”

We’re particularly grateful that the lectures are made available to senior citizens,
veterans, currently serving military and disadvantaged youth.
Over the past months, our country has experienced growing division and political fracture characterized by rancor and vitriol. Given this current environment, opportunities for civil discourse and debate within the community is critical as we strive to be informed citizens. Our company too, has provided our employees with programs that educate and provide opportunities to discuss similar issues. We applaud the Foundation and the New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate – a national model for civil conversation.
Turner is particularly proud to support the Foundation’s student lecture series, through which more than 15,000 students representing 30 schools across central Ohio, have participated in interactive discussions with influential thought leaders. The Foundation provides access, furnishes books authored by the speakers to the students and often provides transportation to the various school districts so they can participate.
Congratulations to the New Albany Community Foundation, the New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate, all the schools and students that participate and the other sponsors who support this impactful programming. Turner is proud to join you in strengthening our community!

Little did we know just how prescient were those words 200+ years ago and then over the course of the past 12 months. The events of the past year bring to mind another famous quote:
“May you live in interesting times...”
A global pandemic has challenged the free world with threats to life and health and restrictions of individual liberty unprecedented during peacetime, and our leaders have struggled to justify the continuation of those restrictions as necessary for the common good.
During the summer, and in the midst of the pandemic, we saw hundreds of protests in support of important social justice causes, particularly the Black Lives Matter movement, with some turning violent.
An unconventional President lost his reelection bid, and then failed to actively promote the single most important test of our republic — acceptance of electoral defeat and the peaceful transition of power — ultimately leading to a violent uprising at the United States Capitol building.
New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate
A Republic... If you can keep it. ~Benjamin Franklin, 1787
War is the mere continuation of policy with other means.
~Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831)
Despite those challenges, power has been peacefully transitioned to a new administration, one that takes office with a commitment to uniting our country. With a Congress as bitterly divided as The People they represent, our new President will need all of the wisdom, diplomacy, and compromise he can muster to bring us together.
Interesting times indeed.
Tonight’s program marks the third season for the New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate. Our family is grateful for the opportunity to continue this programming in concert with The New Albany Community Foundation as part of this lecture series. We are also into our second year of competition for the renewed debate club and team at the New Albany High and Middle schools, where they have already had notable successes.
Joining us for tonight’s discussion is David Axelrod and Governor Chris Christie, moderated by long-time central Ohio journalist Colleen Marshall. It is sure to be an interesting evening.
It is in these most interesting of times that our ability to come together to discuss and debate the issues is more important than ever.

Each year, the Foundation recognizes members of our community who have demonstrated significant civic leadership that strengthens the community. In a year that perhaps more than any other presented unforeseen challenges, Angela exemplifies leadership that makes a difference.
Reflecting on the selection of Angela as the 2020 McCoy Award honoree, Foundation Board Chair Lynne Smith said, “By her example, Angela inspires people to come together in service to the community. She has a heart of service that brightly shines in everything she does.”
Angela was appointed Executive Director of Healthy New Albany earlier this summer, succeeding Dr. Phil Heit who founded and led the organization since 2005. Prior to that, Angela served as Healthy New Albany’s Director of Operations.
Assuming leadership of Healthy New Albany during the pandemic allowed Angela to apply her entrepreneurial skills and she quickly adapted programs to the changing environment. Healthy New Albany presented 12 New Albany Farmers Markets in a new, safer way because of COVID-19. It also introduced drive-up markets and added new programs including SeniorConnections and Integrative Health Classes.
Angela’s work in the community dates back to 2013 when she became involved with the Village Coalition Against Hunger, eventually becoming the director of the small nonprofit that helped support the needs of community members experiencing food insecurity.

Her remarkable passion andcommitment to make sure no one experienced hunger drove her toward an expanded role. Amazingly, she even operated the pantry from her home for a year while searching for a permanent, suitable location. In its early days, volunteers picked up food from Angela’s garage to then deliver to the families.
“I feel like my purpose on the planet is to do good, and to do good work and to serve others in whatever capacity I can,” Angela shared with Healthy New Albany Magazine in a 2017 interview. “I don’t know if I intended to run a food pantry, but you know, you do what’s in front of you. When a need presents itself, you take that.”
Through collaboration and support from the New Albany School district, community volunteers and Foundation donors, the pantry relocated to the annex building at 79 N. High Street on the school campus. And eventually, the food pantry became part of Healthy New Albany. It was renamed the New Albany Food Pantry and Angela served as its Executive Director for six years. Today, the Pantry provides clients living in the New Albany-Plain Local School District with food and personal care items and operates a number of programs including Summer Meals, Community Kitchen classes, cooking demonstrations and more.
Despite unprecedented demand, the New Albany Food Pantry has been able to support families and individuals experiencing food insecurity. During the months of January through September of 2020, more than 126,300 meals were provided to our neighbors in need. Additionally, volunteers devoted 3,200 hours in support of the Pantry.
“The Foundation and the entire community are grateful to Angela not just for what she does, but the way in which she does it,” said Craig Mohre, President of the Foundation. “She’s compassionate, cares deeply about the clients and her enthusiasm inspires others. She’s always quick to recognize the pantry’s team of volunteers. She embodies what the award is all about and therefore, is most deserving.”
New Albany Community Foundation donors responded to the Foundation’s COVID-19 Call to Action that resulted in a $55,000 grant contributed to the New Albany Food Pantry to support neighbors in need.

While we entered the year with a carefully constructed plan, a global pandemic and a movement to advance social justice put those plans on hold. So we shifted our focus and asked you to join us. And you responded with an outpouring of support. Because of your generosity, we made grants totaling nearly $200,000 toward the safe reopening of our schools, to the New Albany Food Pantry and in support of local mental health initiatives. We also introduced our Conversations on Social Justice with a virtual event featuring Eddie S. Glaude Jr., who chairs the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University. We all came away from the conversation with a greater understanding of how to care for each other. Looking back, that’s what this year was all about.
When you donate through the Foundation, gifts of any size, large and small, generate impact in so many ways. Grants have been made in support of worthy efforts that touch lives throughout our community. Including the Charleen & Charles Hinson Amphitheater, which will provide a gathering place for community events, enabling us to build and strengthen community bonds. The Foundation has been at the center of efforts like this that bring us together. And it’s all made possible by your support. If you’ve given, we thank you. And if you are yet to make a gift, we invite you to join us.
In 2020, two fundamental priorities emerged.
Our health. And our humanity.

This year, due to the unique circumstances facing our community and country, the Foundation adjusted the format of our lecture series. Through the new format, the 2020-21 programs are virtual and free to all. It is our hope to extend programming of The New Albany Lecture Series far beyond surrounding communities and central Ohio schools. Through the generosity of our donors and the new virtual format, the Foundation has been able to more than double the number of viewers during the first two programs. Below are a few snapshots of viewers and participants from the Conversations on Social Justice programs. We invite you to join us virtually for the remainder of the season.
“ This was an incredible, thought provoking and ‘real talk’ conversation! Thank you New Albany Community Foundation for bringing this to New Albany.”
– Dee Kim
