David and Goliath

Commentary

by

Ron Thomas

Text: 1 Samuel 17:1-58 1. Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Socoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Socoh and Azekah. 2. Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3. The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them. 4. A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall. 5. He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; 6. on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. 7. His spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield bearer went ahead of him. 8. Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me.

9. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us." 10. Then the Philistine said, "This day I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other." 11. On hearing the Philistine's words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified. 12. Now David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul's time he was old and well advanced in years. 13. Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab; the second, Abinadab; and the third, Shammah. 14. David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, 15. but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 16. For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand. 17. Now Jesse said to his son David, "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18. Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them. 19. They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines." 20. Early in the morning David left the flock with a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21. Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22. David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and greeted his brothers. 23. As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it.

24. When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great fear. 25. Now the Israelites had been saying, "Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his father's family from taxes in Israel." 26. David asked the men standing near him, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?" 27. They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, "This is what will be done for the man who kills him." 28. When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, "Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle." 29. "Now what have I done?" said David. "Can't I even speak?" 30. He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. 31. What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. 32. David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him." 33. Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth." 34. But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35. I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this

uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you." 38. Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul, "because I am not used to them." So he took them off. 40. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. 41. Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42. He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. 43. He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44. "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" 45. David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands." 48. As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.

49. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. 50. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. 51. David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52. Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron. 53. When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp. 54. David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem, and he put the Philistine's weapons in his own tent. 55. As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is that young man?" Abner replied, "As surely as you live, O king, I don't know." 56. The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is." 57. As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine's head. 58. "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him. David said, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem." (NIV) Introduction: I. The account of David and Goliath is one of the better known stories in all of Scripture.

A. Many people know the story of the young man David defeating the experienced giant warrior Goliath.

1. David overcame great odds to achieve this victory.

B. The reason David won is often overlooked.

1. He won because of his belief (faith) and devotion to God. 2. God gave him the victory!

Note: It has been asserted by some that the LXX is shorter than the Masoretic Hebrew Text (MT) and this abbreviation of the LXX must mean that the MT is the compilation of more than one story strand. However, Youngblood dismisses this. Commentary: 1 Samuel 17:1-16, Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Socoh in Judah. A. The armies in battle array (17:1-3).

1. 1 Samuel 17:1-3, Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Socoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Socoh and Azekah. Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them. (NIV) 2. It is estimated (Coffman) that some 27 years later, the Philistines prepared for a major battle with Saul and his forces. 3. The area in which the battle took place was the Valley of Elah.

a. McGarvey (Lands of the Bible, p. 260) identified this place as being just north of Socoh.

4. The location where the battle could have taken place is a small area because the mountain had hills much too steep for military engagement.

B. The Philistine champion Goliath (17:4-7).

1. 1 Samuel 17:4-7, A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall. He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield bearer went ahead of him. (NIV) 2. The world’s tallest man (as of May 2004) was from Ukraine, Leonid Stadnyk, who stood 8 feet, 4 inches, and weighed 450 pounds.

a. Walking and “just getting around” appeared to be very difficult for him. b. He was not very old, approximately thirty years of age. c. The tallest person in recent history was Robert Wadlow from Alton, IL who was 8 feet 11 inches tall and weighed about 500 pounds. d. He died at 22 years of age in 1940.

3. Goliath was approximately 9 inches taller than Mr. Wadlow.

a. Goliath was six cubits and a span. b. A cubit is about 18 inches; a span is about the width of a spread out hand, or 8 inches. c. Because the measurements are approximations, the estimations of Goliath’s height places him around 9 feet, 2 inches to about 9 feet, 9 inches. d. However, it must be noted that some traditions have him as “short” as 6 feet, 6 inches and as tall as 9 feet, 9 inches. e. In any case, by the standards of the time, this man would have been huge! f. It has been estimated that all his hardware, used for defensive purposes, would have weighed approximately 175 to 220 pounds (NET)!

4. With Goliath’s stature and his calling out the repre-sentative Israelite to battle, imagine what the army thought of Saul, their king.

a. Saul was presumably still the tallest man in the army (10:23); and had shown himself to be a competent warrior – how did Saul’s army preceive him at this time?

i. 1 Samuel 10:23, They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others. (NIV)

b. Would Saul have been the best match for Goliath?

5. Goliath’s shield-bearer went before him.

C. Goliath’s defiant challenge to Israel (17:8-11).

1. 1 Samuel 17:8-11, Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us." Then the Philistine said, "This day I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other." On hearing the Philistine's words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified. (NIV) 2. It was somewhat common for armies in battle array to send out representatives to do the fighting in order for the larger armies to be spared the bloodshed (2 Samuel 2:12-32).

a. 2 Samuel 2:12-32, Abner son of Ner, together with the men of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, left Mahanaim and went to Gibeon. Joab son of Zeruiah and David's men went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. One group sat down on one side of the pool and one group on the other side. Then Abner said to Joab, "Let's have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us." "All right, let them do it," Joab said. So they stood up and were counted off—twelve men for Benjamin and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David. Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his dagger into his opponent's side, and they fell down together. So that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim. The battle that day was

very fierce, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by David's men. The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was as fleet-footed as a wild gazelle. He chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he pursued him. Abner looked behind him and asked, "Is that you, Asahel?" "It is," he answered. Then Abner said to him, "Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons." But Asahel would not stop chasing him. Again Abner warned Asahel, "Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?" But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel's stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died. But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and as the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, near Giah on the way to the wasteland of Gibeon. Then the men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They formed themselves into a group and took their stand on top of a hill. Abner called out to Joab, "Must the sword devour forever? Don't you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their brothers?" Joab answered, "As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued the pursuit of their brothers until morning." So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the men came to a halt; they no longer pursued Israel, nor did they fight anymore. All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, continued through the whole

Bithron and came to Mahanaim. Then Joab returned from pursuing Abner and assembled all his men. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David's men were found missing. But David's men had killed three hundred and sixty Benjamites who were with Abner. They took Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak. (NIV) b. Goliath taunted and challenged the Israelites.

3. “In cases of single combat, a warrior used to go out in front of his party, and advancing towards the opposite ranks, challenge someone to fight with him. If his formidable appearance, or great reputation for physical strength and heroism, deterred any from accepting the challenge, he used to parade himself within hearing of the enemy’s lines, specify in a loud, boastful, bravado style, defying them, and pouring out torrents of abuse and insolence to provoke their resentment” (JFB, E-Sword). 4. Whether Israel was familiar with such tactics or not (some think they might not have been), they delayed their response because of fear (17:11).

a. 1 Samuel 17:11, On hearing the Philistine's words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified. (NIV)

D. David, the son of Jesse (17:12-16).

For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand. (NIV) 2. Jesse had eight (8) sons. Who were Jesse’s sons?

a. Four (4) of them are named in this chapter: Eliab (oldest), Abinadab, Shammah (also spelled Shimea), and David (youngest). b. The three (3) other named sons are: Nethanel, Raddai, and Ozem. c. In 1 Chronicles 2:13-15, David is listed as the seventh (7) son.

i. 1 Chronicles 2:13-15, Jesse was the father of Eliab his firstborn; the second son was Abinadab, the third Shimea, the fourth Nethanel, the fifth Raddai, the sixth Ozem and the seventh David. (NIV) ii. Perhaps one of the sons of Jesse had died.

d. “All things considered, it may be best to assume that one of David’s seven (7) older brothers died without offspring and is therefore omitted from the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 2:13-15” (Youngblood, p. 684).

second son was Abinadab, the third Shimea, the fourth Nethanel, the fifth Raddai, the sixth Ozem and the seventh David. (NIV)

3. In this simple introductory paragraph to the scene, David is presented.

a. He was a servant of the king and one who had responsibilities at home. b. But, as one might interpret activities at home to be mundane, in truth, the young man David was a warrior for the Lord God.

1 Samuel 17:17-30, Now Jesse said to his son David, "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them. They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines." A. David checked on his brothers as Jesse commanded (17:17-19).

1. 1 Samuel 17:17-19, Now Jesse said to his son David, "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them. They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines." (NIV) 2. The task assigned by Jesse to David to take provisions to his brothers is interesting to note.

a. Did the king demand his army to be supported by each family or a charitable person?

3. Perhaps all we have here is Jesse’s wanting David to check on his brothers and, in the process, to take provisions as a courtesy to his sons.

4. “In those times campaigns seldom lasted more than a few days at a time. The soldiers were volunteers or militia, who were supplied with provisions from time to time by their friends at home” (JFB, E-Sword).

B. David heard Goliath’s defiant challenge (17:20-27).

1. 1 Samuel 17:20-27, Early in the morning David left the flock with a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and greeted his brothers. As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great fear. Now the Israelites had been saying, "Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his father's family from taxes in Israel." David asked the men standing near him, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?" They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, "This is what will be done for the man who kills him." (NIV) 2. David arrived and checked on his brothers, leaving his goods with the supply keeper.

wonder, if the Israelites did this with much conviction because the challenge of Goliath was something that had been occurring for a while and they feared his challenge.

3. David, having caught up with his brothers, heard Goliath cry out his defiant challenge again (17:23).

a. 1 Samuel 17:23, As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. (NIV) b. This challenge must have caught David by surprise, then excitement, and finally disgust when he saw that no one went out to challenge the person defying God’s army.

4. David inquired about the challenge and was told that the king would honor the one who went out.

a. In three (3) areas, the king would honor the one who went out to meet Goliath and, no doubt, came back victorious. b. He would receive great riches. c. The king would give his daughter in marriage to the conqueror. d. The victor’s family would be exempt from taxes (17:25).

i. 1 Samuel 17:25, Now the Israelites had been saying, "Do you see how this man keeps

coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his father's family from taxes in Israel." (NIV)

5. David, probably disgusted that no Israelite warrior had gone out to defend God’s honor, “drops” word that he might be willing to do so (17:26-27).

a. 1 Samuel 17:26, 27, David asked the men standing near him, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?" They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, "This is what will be done for the man who kills him." (NIV)

C. “Even his brother did not believe in him” (17:28-30).

1. 1 Samuel 17:28-30, When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, "Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle." "Now what have I done?" said David. "Can't I even speak?" He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. (NIV) 2. It is not necessarily unnatural to expect an older brother, who had gone off to war to defend Israel’s homeland, dignity, and liberty not to regard a younger brother’s response as David gave it.

3. Eliab knew the meaning of the expression David gave; thus his rebuke of David.

a. Why would he be upset?. . . for a number of reasons.

i. First, the younger brother was “showing up” the older brother by being willing to go out and fight, when the older brother was not. ii. Second, Eliab did not understand David’s motive like he thought he did. iii. This is where many problems and failures to communicate exist – thinking we know more than we actually know. iv. Third, David was a shepherd boy, not an experienced warrior. Perhaps Eliab feared for his younger brother’s life. v. Fourth, perhaps Eliab saw David’s being anointed by Samuel and was jealous.

4. Keil and Delitzsch said the following, which aptly describes the situation: “i.e., thou art not contented with thy lowly calling, but aspirest to lofty things; it giveth thee pleasure to look upon bloodshed. Eliab sought for the splinter in his brother’s eye, and was not aware of the beam in his own. The very things with which he charged his brother – presumption and wickedness of heart – were most apparent in his scornful reproof” (E-Sword). 5. David politely rejects such criticism.

1 Samuel 17:31-58, What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him." Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth." But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you." Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul, "because I am not used to them." So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands." As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron. When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp. David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem, and he put the Philistine's weapons in his own tent. As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is that young man?" Abner replied, "As surely as you live, O king, I don't know." The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is." As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine's head. "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him. David said, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem." (NIV) I. David accepted the Philistine challenge (17:31-58).

A. Saul called for David (17:31-58).

Saul heard of David’s bravado and called for him (17:31).

a. 1 Samuel 17:31, What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. (NIV) b. David’s bravado was very real. c. Often times when one speaks in such a fashion, the bravado quickly turns to something of a whimper when actions must meet words.

d. No so with David!

3. David assured the king of his willingness and of the upcoming victory he was going to gain (17:32-37).

a. 1 Samuel 17:32-37, David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him." Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth." Because of David’s youth Saul, of course, was not convinced of his ability as a warrior. c. David, however, had been misjudged.

i. He had struggled with God’s creation (a lion and a bear) and had overcome them, not to mention “lesser” animals and he felt he was more than capable of attending to Goliath.

4. For David, it was a matter of two things: God and tactics.

a. David’s confidence convinced Saul; it is also worth mentioning that at this juncture Saul was in a predicament that begged for someone. . . anyone to come forward. b. David did and though Saul had reservations about sending a youth to meet his doom, he did.

5. Saul gave David his armor so the young man could at least be protected in the battle, but David tried them and saw that he was unable to conduct himself properly with all the extra weight on him (17:38-40).

a. 1 Samuel 17:38-40, Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. (NIV) b. Youngblood mentioned it was a belief in the ancient world that if one took the armor of a warrior, the one who lent the material would also receive glory and praise in any victory gained (Youngblood, p. 700). c. Whether David believed this or not is uncertain, but in any case he refused Saul’s attempt – if he even believed the notion – of glory.

6. David’s armor was to go on the attack with his weapon, a sling and five smooth stones.

a. But he does not just go on the attack; he goes on the attack in the name of the Lord of Host. b. It is often asked, if David had so much confidence in the Lord, why five (5) stones? c. David’s confidence in the Lord was no less apparent when he fought with God’s creation and had to exert the amount of effort he did to save his flock. d. Going to battle Goliath, his confidence was strong and he was fully prepared with an arsenal. e. If he had not had confidence, perhaps David would have gathered twenty (20) stones!

B. David’s willingness to accept Goliath’s challenge (17:41-47).

1. 1 Samuel 17:41-47, Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 2. As soon as Goliath saw David coming he mocked David’s appearance in that Israel had sent out a youth to defeat a champion (17:41).

a. 1 Samuel 17:41, Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. (NIV) b. Did Israel have no more “respect” or “regard” for a vicious warrior than to send a youth out?

3. Goliath was going to “show” Israel that this mockery was not going to stand (17:42-44).

a. 1 Samuel 17:42-44, He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" (NIV) b. Once again, the situation and the single participant are misjudged. c. Goliath expressed his bravado, and while he had been able to “back it up,” he was about to speak empty words.

d. David attacked and Goliath cursed him by his idol gods.

i. Once again, empty words.

4. David answered Goliath with all the confidence that he needed (17:45-47).

a. 1 Samuel 17:45-47, David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. As Goliath came with armor, David came in the Lord’s name and Goliath was as good as dead! c. There are several points worth mentioning:

i. David came in the Lord’s name, that is, by His authority. ii. To disgrace the Lord’s name and His people is to stand against the Lord.

iii. Many people believe in the material; that is, the tangible is where reality actually is, but David did not hold this view. iv. All the earth will know that Israel has the true God. v. The Lord does not need military weaponry to gain victory.

C. The battle (17:48-54).

1. 1 Samuel 17:48-54, As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. a. That’s confidence! b. Though David had five (5) stone, he took out only one.

3. The stone went right to its mark.

a. This would be the result of two (2) things:

i. First and foremost it was God who saw to it that the stone hit its mark. ii. Second, the skill of David in using the sling was not to be minimized (Judges 20:16). iii. Judges 20:16, Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. (NIV) iv. David’s “single stone found its way through the Philistines defense systems to his one vulnerable spot” (Klein, p. 180).

4. Goliath fell to the earth.

a. Remember, two men came toward David, Goliath and his shield bearer.

i. What happened to the shield bearer?

b. In any case, David came upon Goliath, took his sword, and decapitated him. c. Goliath and the Philistines were defeated!

5. The Philistines were dumbfounded by what had just occurred; the Israelites were given a boost of energy and they chased the Philistines, wounding, killing, and plundering their supplies (17:51-54).

a. 1 Samuel 17:51-54, David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. D. Saul inquired into David’s identity.

1. 1 Samuel 17:55-58, As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is that young man?" Abner replied, "As surely as you live, O king, I don't know." The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is." As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine's head. "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him. 2. As David went out to do battle with Goliath, Saul asked Abner, the commander of the Israelite army, “. . . whose son is that young man?” 3. Abner did not know the answer to Saul’s question. 4.
