Setting 1 Samuel 17:1-3

•Philistines gathered in battle at Socoh

• Saul and men of Israel at Valley of Elah

•Philistines and Israelites on mountains with valley between



Goliath of Gath v4-7

•Champion

•Height 6 cubits and a span• Cubit: 17-20 inches Span: ½ cubit• 9’ 9” tall

•Coat of mail →5000 shekels of bronze• Shekel ¼ - ½ ounce → 75-150 pounds

•Bronze helmet – likely a skull cap

•Bronze armor of his legs



Goliath of Gath v4-7

• Javelin of bronze• Shaft of spear “like a weavers beam”

• Staff estimated between 12-15 feet in length

• Typical staff = 1 inch diameter• Goliath’s at least double ~ 2 – 2 ½ inch

diameter

• Spear head of 600 shekels → 10-15 pounds• Total spear weight around 30 pounds

Goliath’s Challenge v8-11, v16

•He challenges a man of Israel to come fight

•One who wins will take loser’s people as slaves

•People of God were afraid

•Challenged every day for 40 days

•Remember Numbers 13 and the 12 spies?



David

• v12-18 – David is the youngest of 8 sons of Jesse• 3 oldest brothers with the army of Saul• Jesse sends him with food and wants a

report of what has been happening

• v23-25 – David hears Goliath’s challenge• Men say the one who kills him will have

great riches

• v26 – we see David’s first stand for God• “who is this uncircumcised Philistine…”



David and his brothers v28-30

•Brothers are angry with him for leaving his duties• Come to see the battle

• Was there a battle???

• “Is there not a cause?”• Jesse sent me• Should I not be angry at Goliath?!?!



Saul calls for David v31-33

•David tells Saul he will fight

• “You’re a youth, and he a man of war from his youth!”

•How old was David?• Approx. 15-18• Maybe 13?



David’s defense for Saul v34-37

• Fought off a bear and a lion to protect his flock

• Goliath will be no different

• “God will deliver me from this Philistine”

• David already knew he would win!



David prepares to fight v38-43

•Refused Saul’s armor• “…have not tested them”• Likely it was too big for him

•Goliath disdained him• Ruddy – having healthy color, usually a

person’s face• Good looking

• David didn’t look like a warrior

•Goliath cursed him by his gods



Their Final Words v44-47

•Goliath was confident in his strength, armor, and weapons

•David knows his power came from God

• “I will defeat you, and your army will be defeated also”

•God is mightier than sword and spear



David defeats Goliath v48-53

•David hurried towards Goliath

•David’s confidence gave the rest of the men of Israel confidence in God to fight
