Flies & The Law Australian Legal Requirements

• Food Hygiene Regulations require that food is wholesome & safe & has not been contaminated by flying insect pests. All food preparation and retail premises should be protected against flies.

• Australian Food Standards Code is administered by Food Standards Australia NZ

• Standard 3 of the Commonwealth Food Standard Codes deals with the processing of food, the condition of premises and equipment and food handling.

Flies & The Law Australian Legal Requirements• Standard 3.1.1, Division 2, section (4) (d) holds that• “food is not suitable if it….contains a biological…agent…that is foreign

to the nature of food”. In addition to requiring that no pests find their way into food, this standard is often interpreted to encourage the use of glue board – not electronic – UV Fly Units.

• The preference for glue board units is derived from concerns that fly parts will be “exploded” on impact with the electronic grid.

• It is strongly advised, and a requirement of many health inspectors, that glue board units be used in all food preparation and handling areas.

What is HACCP?

• HACCAP – Hazard, Analysis, Critical Control Point

• A Food Safety Program

• To help eliminate hazards at critical stages of production EG: Implementing a Pest Control Policy or a Personal Hygiene Policy

• Outside of the UK and EU, whilst HACCP is not regulatory, it is still the accepted standard for business involved in the food market.

How do Light Traps fit in with HACCP ?• (Relative to Pest Control)

• Flying Insects in Food Safety• Flying Insects can be carriers of Bacteria & Viruses that can introduce

disease at all points of the food chain.• An effective flying insect control strategy is essential• Key tool for this is a HACCP approved Insect Light Trap

Some facts about Flies

• Lay eggs on rotting waste, animal excrement and garbage• Can lay up to 150 eggs in a day• Can fly for several miles from breeding place• Carry bacteria which is proven to cause contamination• Vectors of disease causing Salmonella, Listeria, Ecoli • Don’t see Insect Light Traps 30 meters away• Respond to Insect Light Traps within 3-4 meters• Fly within 2 meters of the floor• Use UV rays to navigate

Insect Light Placement

• Survey Area – size of location, number of doors and windows• Competing light source• Talk to staff re their experiences• Easy access for maintenance• Intercept fly before it gets to food source• Be the Fly• External factors – breeding sites• No Air blowing Outlets – A/C or Heaters

Maintenance

• Replace Tubes every months• Replace Glue Boards every 4-6 weeks subject to season • Wipe down inside & Outside of Insect Light Trap• UV Tubes ineffective when below 50%
