HumourHumourProfessor Ernest Brennecke of Columbia is credited with inventing a sentence that can be made to have eight different meanings by placing ONE WORD in all possible positions in the sentence:
“I hit him in the eye yesterday."
The Message:1. ONLY I hit him in the eye yesterday. (No one else did.)2. I ONLY hit him in the eye yesterday. (Did not slap him.)3. I hit ONLY him in the eye yesterday. (I did not hit others.)4. I hit him ONLY in the eye yesterday. (I did not hit outside the eye.)5. I hit him in ONLY the eye yesterday. (Not other organs.)6. I hit him in the ONLY eye yesterday. (He doesn't have another eye..)7. I hit him in the eye ONLY yesterday. (Not today.)8. I hit him in the eye yesterday ONLY. (Did not wait for today.)This is the beauty and complexity of the English language.

A business tycoon, who had grown pretty old, decided to appoint to
appoint a successor as chief executive officer, everyone expected he would
choose one of the directors of his company. He surprised people by
handpicking employees at various levels of his company to join the
directors for a selection test.
At the board room, he handed each one a seed saying “ To each of you I
give this seed that you may let me know how best you have nurtured it
for a year from Now”.
Their brains ticked as they took the seeds home.
An employee named Robert planted it in a large pot of mud & compost,
watered it daily, anxiously looking at the pot every day. Exactly year later,
everyone came in with their pots for the meeting.
Robert was so scared & uneasy that he took the last row as he saw the
many pots with well grown flowery plants; each seeming to outdo each
other in beauty .Robert’s pot had no plant at all.
As the business tycoon surveyed the pots, he found Robert huddled in a
corner of the room holding his pot in fear & anxiety “Robert will you please
come up here & tell us why you have no plant in that pot? “ Robert
trembled as he walked towards the chief saying “Sir, I am deeply sorry, my
wife, children & I took at most care to grow the seed all through the year but
there was not a sprout till now”.
The chief congratulated Robert saying, I appoint this man the chief
executive officer & successor to all my fortunes for his integrity, honest
& humility.
The seeds I gave each of you were boiled & dried, they were dead seeds.
All of you replaced the seeds when they did not grow, just to impress me
with your plants.
At some point in time before in life, we have to be accountable before
the lord.
It’s better to stand before the lord in rags & a heart full of honesty than
dressed in ill-gotten embroidery and a heart full of deceit.
An honest person is a delight to the lord, worthy of every blessing.
- Suresh Babu.V CMD
‘Rags with Honesty or embroidery with deceit’
An uninterruptible power supply, is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source, typically mains power, fails.
A UPS differs from an auxiliary or emergency power system or standby generator.
It provides near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions, by supplying energy stored in Batteries. So the role of the UPS is to provide short term power when the input power source fails.
Every UPS converts incoming AC to DC through a rectifier, and converts it back with an inverter. Batteries or flywheels store energy to use in a utility failure. A bypass circuit routes power around the rectifier and inverter, running the IT or similar load on incoming utility or generator power
UPS is typically used to protect equipment like Computers, Data Centres, Telecommunication equipment , Medical Equipment or other equipment where an unexpected power disruption would cause injuries, fatalities, disruption of work schedule or Data Loss
TYPES OF UPSØ Online UPSØ Line Interactive UPSØ Offline Or Standby UPS
l In an online UPS, the batteries are always connected to the UPS, and there no power transfer. When power fails, the rectifier is out of the circuit and the batteries keep the power steady and unchanged.
l When power is restored, the rectifier resumes carrying most of the load and begins charging the batteries, though the charging current may be limited to prevent the high-power rectifier from overheating the batteries and boiling off the electrolyte.
l The main advantage of an on-line UPS is its ability to provide an "electrical firewall" between the incoming utility power and sensitive electronic equipment
l The online UPS is ideal for environments where electrical isolation is necessary or for equipment that is very sensitive to power fluctuations.
N+1
In large business environments where reliability is of great importance, a single huge UPS can also be a single point of failure that can disrupt many other systems. To provide greater reliability, multiple smaller UPS modules and batteries can be integrated together to provide Redundant power protection equivalent to one very large UPS. "N+1" means that if the load can be supplied by N modules, the installation will contain N+1 modules. In this way, failure of one module will not impact system operation.
Multiple Redundancy
Many Computer Servers offer the option of Redundant Power Supplies, so that in the event of one Power Supply failing, one or .more other power supplies are able to power the load. This is a critical point – each power supply must be able to power the entire Server by itself.
§ Redundancy is further enhanced by plugging each power supply into a different circuit (i.e. to a different Circuit Breakers)
§ Redundant protection can be extended further yet by connecting each power supply to its own UPS. This provides double protection from both a power supply failure and a UPS failure, so that continued operation is assured. This configuration is also referred to as 1+1 or 2N redundancy. If the budget does not allow for two identical UPS units then it is common practice to plug one power supply into Mains Power and the other into the UPS.
Online UPS
UPS – Uninterputable Power Supply
Knowledge Grid
Doing the right thing is more important than doing the thing right - Peter Drucker
ADVANTAGES
4 It provides isolation between main supply and load.
4 Since inverter is always ON, the quality of load voltage is free from distortion.
4 All the disturbances of supply such as blackout, brownouts, spikes etc. are absent in the output.
4 Voltage regulation is better
4 Transfer time is practically zero since inverter is always ON.
DISADVANTAGES
8 Overall efficiency of UPS is reduced since inverter is always ON.
8 The wattage of the rectifier is increased since it has to supply power to inverter as well as charge battery.
8 Online UPS is costlier than Line Interactive / Offline UPS
APPLICATION OF ONLINE UPS
+ Induction motor drives and similar other motor control applications.
+ Intensive care units, medical equipments.
+ Data Centers
+ Highly sensitive equipments
l True Line Interactive UPS has a controlled Output Voltage, but the same frequency as the Input Voltage
l Utility Power feeds directly to the output equipment and the rectifier keeps the batteries charged. The inverter is paralleled with the output, compensating for voltage dips and acting as an active filter for voltage spikes and harmonics. Rectifier and inverter losses only occur when incoming power fluctuates.
l When incoming power fails, or the voltage goes out of range, the bypass quickly disconnects from the input and the battery drives the inverter. When input power is restored, the bypass re-engages the input, re-charges the batteries, and keeps output voltage constant. UPS vendors who use paralleled power sources claim no loss of reliability. The result is around 98% energy efficiency.
l Offline or Standby UPS, is operationally similar to Line Interactive UPS and is sometimes mistakenly called line interactive. In conventional Offline UPS systems the inverter is turned off, so it can take as long as 10 to 12 milliseconds (ms) to start creating power. That break can crash servers, making legacy Offline or Standby UPS is not suitable for Data Centres
l New Offline or Standby concepts have the inverter producing power within 2 ms after being activated. The bypass is normally engaged, just as with Line Interactive UPS, so equipment operates directly from the utility or generator. Since the inverter isn't working until power fails, there is no voltage control or power consumed, enabling efficiencies as high as 99%. Power failure or voltage outside of range opens the bypass switch, disengaging input from output; the inverter starts operating from the batteries. The rectifier is only large enough to keep the batteries charged
BATTERY
Different types of Batteries are used for UPS depending on the application:
Automotive Battery Nickel Cadmium Battery
Tubular Battery Lithium Battery
Sealed Maintenance Battery (SMF)
Line Interactive UPS
Offline / Standby UPS
The World's Largest UPS, the 46-megawatt Battery Electric Storage System (BESS), in Fairbanks, Alaska, Powers the entire City and nearby rural communities during outages
