This Week’s News

Year 12 Government and Politics Trip to the Houses of Parliament

Last week the Year 12 Government and Politics students went to the Houses of Parliament for a guided tour and workshop activity about 'Rights & Representation'. The hour long tour included some time in the visitors gallery as MP's debated issues of the day. The students were also interested to learn that, during the Queen's annual visit to the palace of Westminster to open Parliament, one MP stays at Buckingham Palace as a 'hostage' to ensure the monarch's safe return. A reminder of the days when King Charles I disrupted the House of Commons, no monarch has been inside the Commons since.

The students enjoyed the day immensely, a valuable experience that will enhance their studies.

‘Writepath' - Tuesday 11 October

For the second year running, students

took part in this event where published

authors write the first paragraph of a

story for young people all over the

world to continue and complete. Our

students worked on stories by famous

authors such as Tamsyn Murray and

Malcolm Rose. They had 1 hour to put

together a continuation on each of the

stories. Students in Years 8

and 10 took part. The stories will be

published into a book.

Year 10 Leaders leading our prospective new Year 7 Sports Leaders!

122 students took part in a huge PE lesson on Friday 14 October as part of the Year

10’s (X band) Level 1 Sports Leader Award. Sixty-nine prospective Year 7 Sports

Leaders, who have had their interviews this week, came out to participate in the well

planned sessions, by our level 1 Leaders.

Along with this, our Year 10s (Y band) and our Year 11 X & Y bands have been to

Westfield and Thomas Coram, respectively this week.

There has been a huge amount of Leadership going on this half-term, with three

primary schools being visited, numerous competitions and lessons being led by our

Year 10s and 11s, along with 99 interviews for prospective Year 7 & 8 Sports Leaders.

Our brand new Level 3 Sports Leaders award also commences after half-term for our

Year 12 Leaders! The Sports Leaders Programme for this year is definitely in full flow

again.

Visit to see author Tanya Landman Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 attended an author event last Friday (14 October) at The Hemel Hempstead School. Tanya Landman's book Buffalo Soldier won the prestigious Carnegie Medal in 2015.

ASA News Ashlyns Craft Fair: The Ashlyns Craft Fair takes place on Sunday 20 November from 11am to 4pm. We are running a café which will be open all day selling hot food, drinks and homemade cakes, plus we have a chocolate tombola and craft activity (run by Berkhamsted Arts and Crafts) for younger children. If anyone is happy to help for an hour then do email us with your preferred time at: [email protected]. Thank you!

Ashlyns Quiz Night: Tickets are selling fast for the annual Quiz Night on Friday 11 November. For information about tickets for this ever popular event please see the attached Quiz Night flyer or download it from the ASA page of the school website.

Student Eleanor Littler, from Year 8 said ‘Meeting Tanya Landman was really exciting as she is an amazing and talented author. My favourite book of hers is Buffalo Soldier and Tanya actually spoke about this book and said that the character she relates to the most is Charlie (Charlotte) - Charlie is also my fa-vourite character! I’ve only just started reading Tanya’s books and this is brilliant as there are loads for me to choose from as she’s written so many. I can’t wait to read them all’.

Year 7 Parent Support and Information Evening

Thanks you to all those

Year 7 Parents who attended the Feedback and

Information Evening on Wednesday night; if you

weren’t available to attend, copies of the slides and

information will be available on the portal.

Maths Question of the Week

Tom asked his Granny how old she was. Rather than giving him a straight answer, she

replied: "I have 6 children, and there

are 4 years between each one and the next. I had my first

child (your Uncle Peter) when I was 19. Now the youngest one

(Your Auntie Jane) is 19 herself. That's all I'm telling

you!" How old is Tom's Granny?

Submit your solution to the

LRC for house points.

Ashlyns Boys Present at the First Give Awards

On Monday evening a group of five boys, Sam Cadeau, Fraser Camp, Sam

Emberson, Jonny Farrow and Jasper Foskett presented at the annual First Give

Awards. Their presentation was chosen out of over a hundred schools and thousands

of students to show the best of what the First Give program has to offer. Here is an

account of their day:

‘17 October 2016. A mild Monday afternoon. On our way to London for possibly one of

the biggest presentations of our lives. The trip from Berkhamsted to London Euston

was long and nerve wracking. Finally after weeks and even months of preparation the

day was here.

When we got out of the London Bridge tube station and on to the busy streets of

London, towering above us was The Shard. Standing there in all of it’s glory! A five

minute walk later and we had arrived at our destination….London City Hall. The

excitement had started to kick in. We stood there in awe for a couple of minutes. With

a perfect view of The Shard, London City Hall, London Bridge and almost all of the

Skyscrapers in London.

When we entered London City Hall, went up the lift, saw where we were performing

our presentation, we finally realised it was here. The weeks of preparation, of learning

our lines, of learning how to present out lines. It was finally happening. Then we went

outside and saw the view. The most incredible view of London I have ever seen. A

look over most of London. It's even better at night!

The hours passed and the people started to gather and so did the nerves. We were

about to go on stage in front of a couple of hundred people in City Hall. It was the

best we have ever performed it. We got a round of applause, many congratulations

and handshakes. It was an incredible experience and an extraordinary moment of my

life. This year’s school finals will be on Thursday 23rd February. Thank you everyone

for making it possible.’

Uniform – shoes and piercings As we move into the half-term period, we would like to remind students and their parents that this is the ideal time to ensure that shoes are the correct school shoes – guidance is below. Any piercings other than a single plain metallic stud in the lower ear lobe must be removed prior to arriving back at school on Monday 31

October. Thank you. Shoes Trainers or any kind of canvas shoes are not permitted as uniform shoes; this includes black trainers. School shoes must be plain black with no motifs, coloured stitching or reflective areas. Boots are not permitted as uniform shoes for boys or girls. Examples of suitable school shoes are shown below. If students are seen wearing non-uniform shoes to school they will be asked to go to Student Reception, where they will be given a pair of school plimsolls to wear until the end of the day and receive a signature on their Standards Card.
